Great little coffee shop in a nice downtown area. We easily got metered street parking outside. The seating is small but cozy, about six 2-person tables and a bar to sit at. I got the matcha latte with almond milk and my husband got one of their specialty drinks, the funktado. The funktado was a double espresso shot with some spices like cayenne. We had no idea about putting spices like cayenne in a coffee drink but it's not like you taste the hot spice. It must do something good because he loved it! I should note that they had several other specialty coffee drinks written on a welcoming little chalk board as well. We got the hibiscus donut to share. The barista recommended the hibiscus donut over the the blood orange donut. But I should note these things were HUGE. The spot seemed like one of those little hubs that only locals know about. As we sipped on our amazingess drinks, we saw small groups of adults come in and gather around little tables to catch up on a friendly Saturday. The cool local artwork up also added a warm welcoming vibe to the place. Highly recommend this place if you're in the Montclair area. read more

Awesome, family run business in Watchung Plaza. Super friendly husband & wife and they know coffee. First time in, my wife got a matcha latte. She loved it. I got the Nelly Cortado with oat milk. What can I say about a nice local coffee shop like Local Coffee? Such a nice spot to go to! The woman who helped me when I came in was super helpful and friendly. I was a little nervous walking into the shop because there weren't many options but I also knew that there would be options in terms of kinds of milk, kinds of sweeteners, etc., and she walked me through their options! I ended up ordering a hot chocolate with almond milk (my first time trying almond milk in a hot chocolate) and it tasted amazing. You can tell that they really take pride in the products that they use in their foods. I loved the feel of the place and will be back. read more

The 2 good coffee places in Montclair are this and Red Eye, and this is slightly better. I can only speak about the espresso drinks, but they're all good and made the right way. The owners are really friendly, but never in an overbearing way. Local is a really nice place to spend 20 minutes. My only complaint is that most of the baked goods are gluten-free bullshit. Open just 2 days but well run. Good service. Latte was good, best in Watchung Plaza I'd say. They use Irving Coffee as their roaster which from my days in Manhattan remember it as excellent coffee and it is here (they filter the water to maximize that result). Six cozy tables and free wifi - suspect this place will become busy. They offer sweets like high-end donuts (from Balthazar bakery they say) but no savory breakfast items like instant oatmeal or quiche. That would make this place even better but for now, very happy to finally have good coffee and a good coffee shop in Watchung Plaza. read more

Short version: best coffee in the area. Long version: The location is great. Just on the corner, where there is adequate parking in the area. Outdoor seating which is always nice. The view may not be anything spectacular but it isn't gross. It's a very nice neighborhood to just sit and people watch. You walk in and are usually warmly welcomed by the baristas. The owner is usually always working the few times I've stopped by. He's super nice and willing to work with you to ensure you have a great experience. They have really good pastries. Doughnuts by Dough which are my absolute favorite. Now the coffee is where it's actually at. It's simply amazing. I've had espresso beverages here and I've had the cold brew. I've yet to be disappointed. This is a third-wave coffee shop for sure. Their care for coffee is next level. They're building up artisans here. The coffee is simply breathtaking. The sweet yet sour and bitterness of the espresso is met with a warm comforting velvety texture of creamy milk to just lift the espresso to new heights. "Upper Bloomfield" and "Middle Montclair" are two wonderful locations to live, but not if you wanted a decent cup of coffee on the way to the train. I almost had to take a sedative to contain my excitement over Local opening. Being the coffee snot that I am (I have a Breville BES870XL Barista Espresso machine at home), I don't like it when so called coffee shops show up with a barista who clearly has no formal training and use that bloody stupid spoon dollop wads of nasty bubbly foam onto what is essentially a vat of hot milk with a few drops of coffee flavor. Local gets it right. Their roast is a rich medium roast, how espresso is supposed to be, with a velvety crema and very little bitterness. Their baristas know how to make a proper microfoam and pour the drink correctly. Been here twice already, will be back again soon! read more
