A cautionary tale/rant: I'd been here a number of times and had fine enough experiences (charcuterie plate!) and thought it'd be a nice casual bday dinner place for my BF and his family. First mistake. I called to make a reservation for 5 on a Friday afternoon and was told they don't take reservations but they can put me on a list. Ok? Second mistake. So we arrive about 20 mins early b/c I have no idea if there'll be a table ready. Guy at the door asks us if we're on said list (am I at a club?) Why yes sir we are. Ok, let us know when the rest of your party arrives and I'll let you know how long the table is going to be. Uh, that's why we arrived early. Can you give us a time estimate now? No. Great service, you're totally not assuming people will stick around. Confused, we did just that and sauntered around the very crowded bar and find two seats open. Score! 10 minutes go by, the bartenders have seen us sit and have looked at us multiple times, and served the lady next to me without even acknowledging my existence. Just then a very harried, abrasive waitress comes over and asks if we were sat by the hostess, to which we explain no we're actually waiting for a table and would very much like a drink. What I got out of the 30 second lecture was "well, this is an area for dining only and the hostess needs to sit you here. it's waiter service." WHAT? Why would your customers be so counter-intuitive to think that seats at the bar are reserved for waiter service? And WHY would you want waiter service while sitting at a bar? And why are your servers so RUDE about explaining that? And for F***'s sake, why didn't the bartenders say anything?! Apparently, my (third) mistake was assuming this place is run in any sort of normal fashion. So we get up, annoyed, try unsuccessfully to get drink on the other side of the bar, then ask the host for an update on time (since its now the time we're on "the list" for), receive "When your party arrives (now two min away) it'll probably be another 30-45 minutes." No. Thankyou. Goodbye. And we left and haven't been back since. Sorry I ruined your bday dinner BF. That being said, it's shame b/c despite the drinks and ambiance being great, the food is extremely overrated and I'm honestly in no rush to give them my business again. Boo. read more

I REALLY wanted to like, no LOVE this place. Southie needs more upscale neighborhood spots to counteract the plethora of bars strewn throughout the neighborhood BUT sad to say....this place just ain't it! I had heard from a few friends that the beer selection was great but the food disappointing yet I wanted to keep an open mind so I decided to give Local a fair shake. Well, as the saying goes-"if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck-it's a duck!" They were right! We started with a couple bar snacks-love the concept of sharing a few small plates to taste their offerings. We had the Tuna Poke (ho, hum), The Fried Cheese Curds (pretty solid) and the fried pickles (would have been good if the roumalade didn't taste like sweaty feet (that is, what I imagine sweaty feet would taste like). I had a hard time choosing from the menu's offerings for a main dish. It's not that I don't like interesting /eclectic dishes but there was always a component that made me stay away. I WAS going to order the gazpacho but they were out (something i heard happens quite frequently there). So, against my better judgment (few can stack up to Linda Beans')....I ordered the Lobster Roll. I can probably say it was in the top three of worst I EVER had. Yes, there was a really good amount of lobster meat (for the modest $17 price tag) but what does it matter when it's inedible. It was served on a croissant (which fell apart at the first bite) but the worst part is the flavor was completely overpowered by huge chunks of green and yellow peppers with some terrible mystery seasoning in the mix. Just terrible! I literally took two bites. I voiced my displeasure by letting the server know gently that I wouldn't have ordered it if the description was accurate (which it wasn't) .Our server Erin was like "aw, I feel bad you don't like it, can I get you more chips". Well, it doesn't take a Mensa candidate to know the entree MUST be bad if the only thing I ate WAS the potato chips. I've worked in the food industry and I know one of the main rules is to make sure the customer is happy. She made no attempt whatsoever to do something/anything for me. I'm not sure I understand some of the middling to negative reviews of this place. It's a bar with undeniable ambiance, good microbrews, and pretty good cocktails...and it happens to have a really good food menu. Would sir/madam prefer worse food? I'm sorry, Local 149 gets knocked for "trying too hard" because the grilled cheese features artisanal cheese over Kraft singles? What message are we sending? Please, don't bother with locally-sourced ingredients meticulously produced by people who give a damn...I prefer processed, artificial, and deep fried everything. So that said I really hope Local 149 is a raging success. They appear to care about every aspect from the food to the cocktails (I thoroughly approve of their homemade infusions - the jalapeno-infused tequila in particular was great both on its own and in drinks). As to the food I recommend the prosciutto-wrapped scallops off the bar bites menu and the cheeseburger - one of the best I've had in Boston. I have been a regular customer to local 149 for two years now but last night left a bad taste in my mouth and I can't say I'll be back... Sunday nights in southie is almost as busy as a Friday night anywhere else in Boston and it looked like there was little to barely any staff working. It's important to properly staff up for a busy night especially when the patriots played that day. My roommates and I walk in and about 20 people lined up behind us. There was no host at the door for about 10 min and I saw a manager who looked at us all lined up but proceeded to play with the televisions in the bar. Priorities BRO! The host eventually came and looked immediately overwhelmed and told us it would be 15 min for a table. I gave him my name and he nodded and brushed us too the bar. After everyone got settled in who was waiting at the door I noticed that all of the parties who came in after We did were being sat at tables. I went to the host after we waited 30 min and I said how much longer? And he asked what my name was and our name wasn't on the list. He didn't even write our name down. We sat down and didn't see a server until 20 min later. Our server mumbled an apology and then took our order. We ordered a pepperoni pizza and a side of sweet potato fries. What came out of the kitchen was sweet potato fries and Mac and cheese balls. I love mac and cheese balls but didn't order them. They took the mac and cheese balls away and then another half hour later brought us our pizza. The same manager who ignored the line at the door came to our table and told us he would Comp the pizza and then we got it served to us in a to go container!!? Oh. Did you want us to leave?!? We couldn't eat the pizza there?!? The food here is great but service is everything. If you mess up that's ok mistakes happen. You failed to make up for Local 149. I went to Local 149 on its very first night open to the public -- so it might not be fair to judge too harshly at such at the earliest point in their life. Lucky for them, there wasn't much to judge harshly -- it was, overall, a great first experience. They've done a fabulous job reinventing the space once occupied by the Farragut House and all its knick-knacks. The selection of European, local and just downright awesome beers on tap beats anywhere else in Southie by a mile. I will agree with another poster and echo that I think the menu is just a tad "too far" in terms of palate and financial accessibility for character of the neighborhood. I try to keep an open mind with menus and don't mind spending a little money for a good meal, but every single dish had at least one ingredient that gave me pause and the price-point is just a little high to expect that I'll be ordering a full dinner on a regular basis. I have a feeling I will become a "regular" at the bar for apps and beers, but not for the sit-down dinner menu. I wouldn't mind seeing Local 149 redo its menu just a bit to ease into the 'hood. Keep some of the fun, original dishes, but add a few more straight-forward entrees closer to the low teens, rather than so many pushing $20. The night we were there, I had the burger and my husband had the chicken and waffles (which he absolutely loved). My burger suffered a bit, I think, from the opening night onslaught, but I'm definitely going to give it another try. All the ingredients seemed fine, the execution was just a bit off. But, really, Local 149 is such a welcome addition to the neighborhood. All of the staff on opening night were working hard, had a good attitude and were really eager to please (in a good way). If the crowd at the soft opening was any indication, this place will do okay. Special props to Ashley, who appeared to be the manager, for making the rounds to all the tables, greeting everyone and soliciting constructive feedback on how everything was - that's the right approach and I hope they'll continue to listen to their customers. Specifically asked for mains not to be brought out before we'd finished appetizers - everything came out together and subsequently was cold by the time we got to eat it. There was only one bottle of sparkling wine in their inventory. The whole time we were there, the waitress was moody and acted like we were making her life really difficult. The service at 149 is so offensive its hard to believe they are still in business. It's the only place on that side of southie and still no one wants to go there because of the service. I was there on Saturday night and the bartender working was possibly one of the most rude woman I have ever met. I wish I could post a picture of the bloody raw chicken I was served when I ordered the chicken and waffles here on a Saturday AM about a year ago. Maybe if they had more available/helpful service I could have found a waiter or waitress to complain to. I give this place 2 stars because it's good about half the time, and it's certainly better than the place that was there before. Finally was able to check out Local 149 after hearing and reading so many great things about it - nothing of which was overstated. The entire restaurant is built around a large bar with lots of seating. The "restaurant" side has good amount of comfy and inviting seating and the bar side lots if high top tables. But who cares about any of that when you have have the awesome beer/wine/cocktail menu this joint has.. I thought I might try a few different ones (hey - it was Saturday!) until I ordered the Moscow Mule made with a house made ginger beer. Spicy, refreshing and absolutely delicious. I may have had 3 (stop judging! I took a cab.) I was also washing them down with the Red Snapper Succotash Stew - sooooo good! The squid was PERFECTLY cooked, so tender and flavorful and the red snapper scrumptious in an addictive broth. After a slight snafu with my dinner (not a big deal) they comped a round of drinks which was a wonderful gesture. Great place for a date or a night out in Southie and a great departure from the fresh from college crowd on Broadway. I will definitely be back! read more

I wanted to love Local 149; it's got all the right ingredients...great atmosphere, great beer selection, interesting menu, but after two visits I'm just not feeling it and don't have much desire to ever go back. Everything on the menu sounds better than it actually tastes, especially with regards to the bar bites. Nothing is awful, but nothing is particularly "wow." The ham and cheese sandwich is the exception here. Fried green tomatoes in the tomato salad were missing green tomatoes. French fries were overcooked scraps of potato. It generally seems to be the case that anything fried will taste like batter and not much else. The service is, like the food, fine but not great. Particularly disturbing, however, (and I see another reviewer noticed this as well, so it's not an isolated incident) is that the guy behind the bar who makes the charcuterie and prepares the oysters--in plain view of people seated at the bar, mind you--prepares food with his bare hands, sticks his fingers in his mouth to sample cheese while doing so, touches various surfaces in the bar area, and goes back to preparing your raw meats and cheeses. I noticed he put gloves on after my husband gave him the stank eye, but they didn't stay on very long. I'm pretty sure that's a major health code violation. If that's the level of cleanliness they're working with at the bar in plain view of customers (the bar seating is designed in a way that you are made to see him) , I hate to think what's going on back in the kitchen. I'm all about bringing fresh culinary blood into Southie, but honestly, this place just makes me miss the Farragut House. read more

I used to come here 3 times a week, then all the best employees left and they were replaced by people who couldn't fill their shoes. Its still nice if you're in the area and don't have many options, but it used to be a place you wanted to show off to your friends. Current staff is looking to be there, do their job, and punch out. Are they bad? No. But the staff used to make every visit feel like there was a community and you wanted to go back. Now, there's no insentive to return over other places at the seaport or south end. read more

I really like this place! The food is good quality and there's is always some unique dishes on the menu. I'd go here for a few beers and bar snacks but also to sit down for dinner. Ive had a great experiences sitting at both the bar and at a table. Great selections of craft brews as well as some interesting mixed drinks. I would like to give this place 5 stars, but it really deserves a 4.5. The food here is GREAT. The chicken n waffles (though costs 17 dollars is very good.) is delicious. The chicken tastes as fresh as fried chicken can get. Nothing overwhelming about the waffles but, it's a good quality waffle. chicken and waffles is something i generally don't see myself paying 17 dollars for based on value and costs of the chicken and waffles but i've ordered it numerous times here because it's that good. You won't be sorry. The tuna tartare.... amazing. can't get enough. My friends have nothing bad to say about this place. Great selection with beers on tap, great atmosphere. the not so great Sometimes the stools at the shorter tables get a little awkward/uncomfortable. Another thing is that service may be a bit slow when they are busy. This is really a testament to how good the food is but at busy hours, you can expect attentive and friendly service from your servers, but it might take a bit to get food out. Open! Welcome! Packed with 20-40 min wait for a table at a soft opening. Bravo! Staff under stress and handling it. Great GM on hand to visit tables and smooth things out as necessary. Great staff....anxious to please. Have a great selection of interesting beers. BBC and Sweet Thing were tasty. Would bring us back to try others. Ordered tuna burger, taco salad, pepperoni pizza, hot dog, chicken soup and for dessert the cheesecake and the fried fluffernutter. This was enough food for 4 of us. Not huge potions...just right and such good ingredients that it satisfied. All well presented and delicious... except the fluff ... all batter. Lots of other great offerings on the menu that we're looking forward to trying. Will be hugely popular...glad we got in before we can't...imagine waits will be long for tables.....but if you have the time it's worth it. Or go early. Problem with the sound system...cranked too loud...ears still hurt. GM say it will be fixed. Got it under control somehow while we were there. Complements on the decor...could have actually tagged the stairway, it's a stretched canvas...looks good though. Ugh. What a loss. This place used to be one of the more interesting food options in Southie. Yes, it was a pub, but their menu was always creative, extensive, and built around interesting local, seasonal food. Not any more. There's a new chef and the menu is radically simplified. They're now serving more or less the same boring, overpriced gastropub food as every other place in the neighborhood: pork chops, pot roast, bacon wrapped scallops, hanger steak, chopped salad, pepperoni pizza, etc. I tried ordering the couple of interesting items on the menu, but was disappointed. The chickpea stew was an odd mix of chickpeas, sausage, and vegetables in a thin, over-salted bullion. The meat in the short rib carpaccio was delicious, but it was served with with ice-cold, rock hard balls of goat cheese all sitting in the middle of a puddle of ranch dressing that overwhelmed the rest of the dish. The lamb burger was solid, but not exceptional. The one saving grace is that Local 149 still has the best tap in Southie and continues to offer an interesting cocktail menu. Local 149 was consistently one of the most creative food options in the neighborhood. With the big crop of new restaurants coming in to Southie, it's hard to see how this place can thrive with such an uninspired, poorly-executed menu. read more

Nice renovation, but food portions are small and beer selection is not right for this place. Prices are double what they should be. The staff were not working well together. I actually enjoyed watching the "boss" micro managing the servers. Bar staff does not know how to fill a beer properly even though they use glasses that match the beer brand. Went in a week or so back with a few friends. The place was pretty lively for a weeknight so I was expecting good things. The beer and drink selection was pretty extensive. Our drinks arrived without trouble so we ordered a few snacks. I decided to go with the charcuterie board from the "specials", and what a mistake that was! I ordered the prosciutto, country ham, and the provolone(at $6 each!). When my food arrived I was immediately disappointed with the portions. There were 3 pieces of each meat, 3 pieces of cheese, 4 pieces of bread and a spoon drag of mustard. I began with a piece of the prosciutto, which tasted like it had been taken from a vacuum sealed bag in the kitchen. The slices were thick, very salty, and very dark in color. I tried a bite of the cheese, which was not much better. It was very mild, and borderline warm, like it had been sitting out all night. Little did I know the worst was yet to come. The "country ham" they served was completely inedible. In fact, it wasn't country ham at all! I broke off a piece of the ham, and before i ate it, noticed an off smell. I smelled the other pieces that were rolled up on my board and found they too had a very off scent. I opened up the "country ham" and it was very clear this was just deli ham that had gone very bad. The slices were square, and had the mealy look of boiled deli ham! I was almost a little insulted that they would try to pass this rotten deli ham off as country ham!! I'm not sure if they had run out of country ham or if they just don't know the difference, but I didn't eat a single bite. The ham they served me was an insult to true country ham. The only reason this restaurant is getting 2 stars is because of their Moscow Mule. Maybe it was my own fault for ordering a charcuterie board in Southie, but I would be hard-pressed to go back to Local 149 again. read more

Affordable, good food and a pretty relaxed atmosphere. I go here in between breaks from school (pretty close to Umass Boston) and I've been pretty satisfied every time. Didn't give a 5 star just because server was slightly inattentive, but it is a good place overall. I'd recommend it, and will definitely keep going back. read more

Local 149 is a good spot for drinks and apps, but not so much for full meals. I mean, it's okay, but nothing to write home about. I've been here for dinner a couple of times, and I've enjoyed it, but the fact that it's so crowded makes it difficult to enjoy yourself. If you like good beer and fun apps, come here! The fried pickles are amazing, and so are the fried mac and cheese balls. I also think it's cute they have "pigs in a blankie". The farmer's platter is good to share for the table if you're into meat and cheeses. I've had the Chicken Pattie sandwich which was good, and my date had the short ribs with mac and cheese. Both ok but not stellar. They change their menu up depending on the season to use local ingredients, and half the time I have no idea what anything is. If you're looking for a fun afterwork crowd on a Thursday or Friday for drinks and apps, make a stop here for a local spot in Southie that's a few steps up from Stats. Also- they will know you're not from here if you call it Local 1-4-9; it's 149. read more

I used to love Local 149, it was MY spot in Southie. The friends I would bring there would love it, and always talk about how 'my neighborhood spot' was the best around. I agreed, until my last several trips there. The food has gone down hill tremendously. The bartender informed me that they are trying to be 'more Southie' and got rid of all of their specialty beer glasses, and now serve everything in straight pint glasses. I thought this was pretty odd considering the usually stellar tap list. The tap list now seems like its on par with any other average 'craft beer' spot in the area- nothing too crazy, rare, or craft at all. I went and sat at the bar two weeks ago for some beers and small plates, and not one thing we had was good. The bartender also expressed displeasure with the changes that were happening, and the restaurants focus to be more 'Southie'. Fading fast, guys. Get it together! I am giving 3 stars because of your past, not because of your present, otherwise it would be 2 at best. read more

Very cool spot environment/date wise. Very average/hit or miss food. Hog wings are great. The tuna tartar sandwich is solid. Most of the appetizers are good. The last couple times I went I tried to go outside the box with one of their seasonal entree type dishes and this last time my God was it bad. It was the yellowtail and shrimp with johnny cakes (something like that). It was really really bad. Nothing in the dish worked. It was unseasoned fish on top of pancakes essentially. Which I was hoping had a twist that would pull it together (the menu made it seem like it was asian fusion inspired), but nope just fish and pancakes. Nothing to see here, two things that don't belong on a plate together. Stick to the menu mainstays and you'll get 4/5 stars. Go outside the box and you'll get one star at this joint. read more

I have been here twice for brunch- once on New Years Day and once last week on Easter. Both time have been with larger groups on holidays and the staff has been very accommodating and we were sat right at the time of our reservation. The service is great and so is the food! I had the Lobster Benny and it was delicious! The cocktails don't disappoint either. The "Pear Necessities" is a great one to try! They also have $5 brunch cocktails which is a great deal. WOW what a great place. I went for dinner last night with some work friends and we all loved everything about it. My Friend lives in Southie and raves about this place so when it came time for him to pick the place to meet he chose Local. I was not thrilled since it was in Southie and the only place I have ever been was beer works so I guess that was my impression going into this place. I was blown away at the decor, not what I had pictured in my head. It was very urban gastro with very cool art on the walls. I fist sat at the bar while I waited for a few friends and was impressed with how many craft beers they had it was hard for me to decide, but I went with Lagunitas. The bar staff was very nice and friendly and seemed to really know their stuff. After about 5 minutes my friends showed up and we sat at a nice booth that overlooked the whole restaurant and bar, great for people watching. Not a bad place to check out a game too since you can see a TV from any seat. Our server was very nice and friendly from start to finish and she was very honest regarding the food questions we had. Anything she couldn't answer she quickly asked the chef and was back very quickly. WE all decided to get a bunch of apps and each get an entree. Here is the list of items we all got, based on the servers recommendations of course. Apps Mac n Cheese fritters Short Rib Carpaccio Fried Smelts Chic Pea Stew Entrees Tuna tartar sandwich - A must have dish one that you will crave Pot Roast Salmon Pork Chop Prime Rib and a coconut creme pie to finish the meal Needless to say everything was outstanding, one of the best meals I have had in a while and I go out 3-4 times a week due to having to take clients out all the time.Really was just a solid dinning experience from the time we walked in to when we were sincerely greeted good night by the host. Local 149 used to be one of my favorite places, but I found it harder to go there because it was out of the way for me. Finally got to come in on Friday to get lunch. The menu is limited for lunch. Being too hungover, I could not drink .. sadly :(. So I went with a ginger beer. They have the BEST house-made ginger beer there is. It has a good kick to it without it being too overwhelming. We started with the mac and cheese balls. Little, cheesy shells fried in breaded-goodness. And it was topped on sriracha. Perfecto. I had the cheeseburger with bourbon bacon. MmM it was so delicious and juicy. The portion was large, with a size of waffle fries. I could eat less than half and had to take the rest to go. My best friend enjoyed the her pepperoni pizza. The bartender had a great personality, but I will have to say that service was slow. It looked like he was bartending and taking care of the tables at the same time. I love this place and will definitely be back. Need to try the new dinner menu because it's been so long! read more

I have been coming to Local 149 for many years and love it. The bartender tonight was not only rude but provided terrible service. My best friend and I came in sat at the bar and said hello to the bartender and she didn't even look or acknowledge us- which is initially fine because maybe she had a bad day. She never came back to take our drink or any order for that matter and we were there for over 15 minutes with out even noticing we were there - it wasn't busy which made it awkward. My friend wanted to leave so I wanted to share my experience. Hopefully she just had a bad day but either way don't bring it to work. read more

Overall unimpressive experience. 15 minutes to get a drink, 45 minutes to get appetizers. When our fried pickle appetizer arrived we found pieces of calamari in it. Truffle Brussel sprouts were nicely done. We decided to refrain from waiting another extended period to order entrees and left for another restaurant. read more

Went there last night with my wife. The food, drinks, and services were amazing. We started with some oysters, the mac 'n cheese fritters, and a couple drinks off the special tiki menu. All of them were perfect. I got the steak which was awesome but my wife's salmon was absolutely amazing. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and the service is something you'd expect from a high-end restaurant. About halfway through our dinner, the sun started reflecting off a window across the street right into my wife's eyes. I want to love this place so badly! But I just can't. It could be the gem of Southie if they pulled some things together, namely their staff. Great decor, awesome menu and the food is definitely delicious. Interesting cocktail list - if they could pull it off. I have been here twice, and twice someone from my party has sent their cocktail back because it wasn't drinkable. Maybe it's their citrus, the drinks were a Moscow Mule and a whiskey sour. But the biggest offense is the service. It's absolutely terrible. At the bar and seated at a table. If you're not neglected, you're greeted with an attitude and much of the staff seems to hate each other. When one of the drinks was sent back, the guy who made it came over and gave us shit for it. Really? The bartender that fixed it was maybe the only staff member that had a smile on his face and some personality. I could possibly bring myself to order takeout from Local 149 because I like the food so much, but I will still pass on even having a drink at the bar while I wait because it's simply not worth it. read more

Can't go wrong with the mac & cheese fritters, chicken & waffles and moscow mules. Daily specials haven't disappointed either. Not a huge fan of the carpaccio though read more
