This place is alright. Granted, I haven't tried their plate lunches. I've only had their BBQ sticks which are pretty good, but not the best. Some people may be a fan of the fatty pieces on a BBQ stick, but I'm definitely not one of them! It's not cool to pay for a stick of fat! Small shack outside of the commissary. Smelled the BBQ and figured why not give it a try. I ordered the number 2 combo meal and it was nearly 12, pretty standard if you ask me. What surprised me was how little of a portion size they gave me. The food was good but for $12 I expect more than 4 small pieces of chicken (chicken nugget size). Each time I've been, I've gotten the chicken plate. Each time, it's delicious and well worth the money and the visit. I recently tried a side of pork and it was good too. The food is always hot and fresh. The staff is always friendly and courteous. If you're craving some good chicken from the grill, this is definitely the place to go. So I don't know what these negative reviews are talking about don't waste your money. Even during the pandemic this place has managed to keep good prices and you get a free drink. The food is AMAZING, way better than any Hawaiian BBQ place I have tried even L&L BBQ. My husband and I would pass by Liz's BBQ all the time while coming in and out of the NEX or commissary. One day we just decided to try them out, and we've been going back ever since! I've had the opportunity to try everything on the menu but the pork sticks, and I've yet to be disappointed, but my favorite is definitely the chicken -- so tender, juicy, and delicious, especially when you add more of the BBQ sauce (located on the side counter next to the utensils and napkins) on top of it and the rice. Yum!! Every time we've gone in the past couple of months, they've been nothing but friendly to us -- maybe because we smile so much in their vicinity in our excitement to get some BBQ! My only complaints are that the plates can be a bit pricey (although not terrible compared to similar style plates on the island) and that every now and then it seems like we'll get an extra fatty piece of meat, which isn't too great. The smell of the bbq cooking is so divine I had to finally give them a try. I ordered a mixed plate with beef and chicken. It can with a salad, dressing of your choice, rice & a drink.. All for $10.75. The staff was friendly and nice. Maybe I caught them on an off day or I was eating left over rice from the day before because my rice was very dry and some parts were even crunchy. Salad was drowning in dressing but I didn't mind because I like the extra ranch. The beef was very tough.. I swear I chewed a million times before swallowing. The flavor was good though. The chicken was better. I really enjoyed that. The food wasn't terrible (except rice) but it also wasn't the greatest. I will likely try them again, hoping the rice ordeal was a fluke. read more

I remember when I first moved to Hawaii I was really confused by the love of macaroni salad. However shortly after my arrival, I found myself in love with plate lunches, and rating places on their macaroni salad... Needless to say if I find a place lunch place barren of macaroni salad, it makes me a sad panda. That's what happened when we wandered up to Liz's BBQ.... Sad macaroni saladless panda.... Liz's offers chicken, beef, pork and a mixed plate all of which include rice and a green salad and a can of soda. The prices are reasonable, and the meat is pretty tasty, but it was missing a tiny bit of oomph. The rice was nice and sticky, and the salad was fresh. The soda being included in the price was a nice touch. I had the chicken plate which had about five pieces of chicken in it for $8.75 which was a great price. My husband had the mixed plate which had chicken, pork and steak. He said that the steak tasted a bit like beef jerky, which I'm not sure was good or bad. The food wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. Wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but as the Yelp gods say it was a-ok. read more

There's nothing inherently amiss with Liz's BBQ, but to rate this place anything higher than 3 stars basically tells the world you've never had a plate lunch in Hawaii prior to your review. Liz's is completely average. It's fine for if you're too lazy to take the 10 minutes at home to throw it together, but other than that, if you believe the Yelp consensus that you're going to get a 4-Star plate, forget it. Compared to others, Liz's serves a small portion of meat and has a very limited salad dressing / sauce selection. Typically it takes less than 2-3 minutes to finish the meal. In fact, you'll spend more time waiting in line than you will eating the food. read more

Was craving BBQ chicken after getting groceries and didn't feel like cooking, I ordered the chicken plate no rice with green salad (no big deal right?).. until I was handed my Togo order and I proceed to put sauce on my chicken did I notice my green salad (lettuce) was brown and slimy, I said something to the employee he took my container proceeded to remove the carrots off the salad place them back into the serving container and then scrap my lettuce into the trash! Went here on Sunday and ordered a mixed plate. We got one scoop of rice, some lettuce with salad dressing and a small handful of bbq meat (chicken, pork and beef). I think it cost around $12 which also includes a can of soda. The taste of the food was average and the meat was dry. When we asked for ranch on the 'salad' the guys serving us just laughed in our faces and repeated what we said. I don't know what was so funny about ranch dressing but okay whatever floats your boat. A little pricey compared to some of the other vendors and food trucks that you can find by the NEX or on Hickam but I do love the flavor of their meats when grilled. I usually get the combo plate, which comes with Pork, Chicken, and Beef, rice, tossed salad and a drink. That watery BBQ sauce is on point. I'm pretty sure that is what they marinade their meat in. This awesome little bbq kiosk is right outside the Nex shopping mall. I have always smelled the meats grilling and hoped one day my honey and I would have time to stop by. Well that happened last night. We both ordered the mixed bbq plate platter which came with chicken, beef and pork. The sauce itself was lovely and tasty. It was sweet and tangy. The flavorings from the meats being grilled gave it that nice charcoal seasoning. The platter came with a scoop of rice, salad and a can of soda. On the other side of the kiosk station there held a variety of sauces from hot, soy and vinegar. Once we got home I excitedly opened my container and cut a piece of beef to eat. Oh how delicious and tasty it was. The pork and chicken was tender. My favorite would be the pork and beef. The meats were not at all dry except there were pieces of fat stuck to a few which I had to pull and discard. After I had devoured my meal, I sat back on my couch satisfied with a smile on my face. I then wished I had perhaps a pound of these to eat for the following day. I will be back these people know what they are doing!! read more

Husband brought me here since I had yet to try it after all this time of being on the island. Him continuing to tell me how great the food is doesn't help the desire of wanting some. Nor does it help that one can smell the food from the parking lot every time I was either going to the NEX or the Commissary. I was a tad worried in how long it would take to get our food with how long the line was. But to my surprise, the line was going extremely fast. A bit worrisome as I've had bad experience where the food wasn't cooked properly. I was thrilled that this wasn't the case. We got the combo platter. It might not seem like a whole lot to share between to people, but it does come with salad and rice. I tried the chicken first. A bit tough on the outside but soft and moist on the inside. Then I went for the pork. Not too fatty as it sometimes can be. And finally (when it comes to the meats) the beef which was just as delicious as the pork. Aside from the slide exterior dryness of the chicken, it was flavorful. It reminded me of how we make our BBQ back in the Philippines. It made me miss being in the Philippines. The rice was cooked all the way. No mushy nor uncooked rice. The salad was a bit small. Had it with Italian dressing. Overall was great. It was nice to see that food was constantly being made especially during busy hours where you can't slack. The lady packing all the food was moving quite fast. They all worked well together to get everyone's order out as fast as possible while still hot. No charred bits in the food which was great. Truly the combo plate was more than enough for the two of us. Next time I'll get my own so I can have it for 2 meals. read more
