Stopped by here back in July to pick up dinner. This place has been here as long as I can remember. Located just outside the entrance to the Pearl Harbor commissary. One can't miss this vendor because you can just smell the BBQ aromas from the parking lot - just follow that smell. There is a huge parking lot, which on weekends can get quite full. This business is also open to the public. We ate here years ago because that BBQ aroma was what lured us. But when we ordered then, although it smelled ono, the taste of the BBQ did not meet up to the expectation of good BBQ. The flavors just weren't there - just tasted so-so. We added this to the list of not worth a repeat places to eat. Flash forward several years later, decided to try them again. Got there late afternoon before 4:30PM. They closed at 5pm. I was greeted by a friendly man - maybe the owner?!? He informed me of the items that were out of stock - BBQ beef & the mix plate would be no beef but just chicken & pork. I wanted to get a BBQ pork stick but it was also not available. I ordered a chicken plate & a pork plate. The plates came with white rice & a choice of mac or green salad, & a drink - either bottled water or can soda. hubby got the chicken plate with double mac & I had the pork plate with white rice & salad. I thought the plates were very reasonably priced which includes a drink. Not too many places do that. Only $11 for the pork plate & $12.25 for the chicken plate. Pork plate - toss salad was good - crisp lettuce with shredded carrots, no brown lettuce. Rice was your typical white, sticky kind. Pork was thinly sliced. a good portion about 8 oz. I wanted to like the pork but it was burnt, dry, & tough. The flavor of the BBQ was good but lacked flavor, like it needed more salt. The pork tasted like it sat in the bottom of the warming pan for hrs & because it was close to pau hana time, I probably got just that. Chicken plate - mac salad - wasn't too bad but his chicken was also burnt. dry, & tough. He ended up only eating half of it & had to toss the rest out. Sad to say, no improvement from the last visit. They still got a 2-star rating because I still got friendly & quick service & the price point was good to include a drink with your plate. It will probably be awhile before I return & maybe next time go earlier in the day for fresher food, to see if it makes a difference vs before closing & getting the scraps. read more

I always smell this place and see people eating it outside of the NEX, I was intrigued. I decided to stop for lunch one day while I was running errands anyway. I got the 3 meat plate so I could try everything and I got it with Mac Salad. Service was fast, he packed my plate in no time. Everything had great flavor and tasted pretty good. I tried to go there 3 times already and they were closed. The second time I decided to check their hours on Yelp since nothing is posted there. According to Yelp they close at 5. Tried it out since they were producing lots of smoke and it smelt really good but the food was not great. Thin pieces of meat that were a bit on the dry side with some simple flavoring honestly you can really only taste the soy sauce. I'm a very picky eater when it comes to chicken, and let me tell you, this was hands-down the best BBQ chicken I've had on the island. Perfectly grilled, juicy, packed with flavor--it was cooked to absolute perfection. The mac salad? It slapped. Creamy, well-seasoned, and the perfect sidekick to that incredible chicken. The service was just as impressive. It's a one-man operation, and he was taking orders and pumping out plates like a pro. It's a fair afternoon, bandit is hungry and NEX foodcourt is close coz of the Red Hill water contamination issue. But hope came in when we found out that the food stalls outside Commissary are open. Went straight to Liz's and scanned their menu. It was straight forward so we decided to grab small kine here. FOOD: Chicken BBQ (6oz) $11.25 - comes with a choice of green salad/mac salad (we opt for the latter), scoop of rice and can soda. Meat ain't dry but not that juicy. It was seasoned well and is really tasty. My tastebud was satisfied with the taste but not my tummy. For $11.25 justice for the combo plate ain't satisfying at all and kinda not worth on your money (serving is only for a kid that's 10-years old). The dish might be tasty but I can go elsewhere for my BBQ cravings where I can have more with the same taste, more juicier and more serving with not so boring mac salad or green salad for an additional penny. Customer service is friendly and the woman who took our order is so kind and patience. Overall experience is okay. Hope next time they'll make their combo plates more worth it for their patrons. The food is just as amazing as it smells when you walk by. This is truly my favorite BBQ place in the area and the first meal we have every time we go to Oahu. I would have this every day if I could! The meat is juicy and very flavorful. Not too salty or overly seasoned. It pairs well with white rice and Mac salad. We usually ask for more sauce on the side and that enhances the flavor even more. There was also a steady stream of customers lined up before and after us enjoying Liz's BBQ as well, so it can't be that bad. Simple menu: bbq beef, chicken, bbq pork or combo with salad and rice. We tried the chicken and pork. Both were cooked well and were super flavorful. Hard to go wrong with mac salad and rice on the side. Located outside the NEX/commissary. My wife and I (local's) seen this place when we go to the NEX, she was always asking if we could try the place out, so today 08142021 we tried it, we both had the Combo Plate with Mac and a drink. We headed up to the NEX food court seats. We both were excited to dig in. When we open the plate we could not believe our eyes and the fact that it cost us 12.95 each. The Mac salad tasted like it was mix with potpourri, the meat was like jerky, and the chicken was the size of a portion you would give a child at the age of 4. Plate with 1 scoop rice and that is the 14 dollar plate rice was dry and the Mac salad was dry not very much mayo somebody really TIGHT with the mayonnaise. Meat Not On A Stick When I was stationed in Pearl Harbor years ago and my fellow service members from all over the states wanted to know where to eat, they always looked to me since I was born here in Hawaii. The ones from Texas, Tennessee, and Missouri ALWAYS wanted to eat BBQ. In Hawaii, bbq is slightly different in its marinade and sweetness in flavor versus the more traditional dry rub cuts they were expecting from back home. This place is located just outside the Pearl Harbor-Hickam AFB, outside the Navy Exhange, so Im sure this could very well be the first place service members get exposed to BBQ in Hawaii. The places we use to go to are long gone but he cooks were in full stride grilling and the engulfing aromas and hissing sounds was enough to "pull my aggro." Came around the height of lunch at 1130 am, no one in line when I ordered. I asked for 3 bbq sticks, one of each meat (chicken, beef, and pork) so I can sample them all. But to my surprise they said those 3 words...there's no sticks...Confused as how can the sticks not be ready at this time of the day, I end up getting 2 plates which comes with 2 sides. Honestly, I just wanted MEAT ON A STICK and I didnt really care for the sides which was choice of rice (meh) salad (boring) or mac salad (just tasted like roni slathered in old mayo) So I open my plate and sigh. The pork had a lot of fat on it, beef tasted like jerky, and chicken look like a chicken that was cut in 3 slices to make it look like there was a lot more than it was. On top of that all the meats was cold. Now wait just a darn minute...werent these guys grilling up all that meat and how is it there are NO sticks? These pieces looked like they coulda easily skewered onto a stick straight from the what? Yes, Watson, the piping hot grill...Instead I think it goes from the grill into a "cold waiting room lobby" tray thats probably been opened and closed dozens of times..., before it finally touches down into the all important customers plate. Give it a shot, at least it was still edible and Ive had worst, you may disagree, but I would kinda be shy if I brought bbq fans and friends here for their first BBQ experience in Hawaii. read more

Small little BBQ spot right outside of the NEX. It might not look like much but this place has what I consider one of if not the best steak plate lunches around. I always go for the mix plate which includes steak, pork, and chicken all with some rice. It's very good. Pro tip: ask them for the BBQ sauce to add to the meat. It's a shoyu based sauce but not too salty and very tasty. The portions are also great for the price and I am always full when I leave. I go here at least once a week. read more

The chicken is the star of this show. Flavorful, moist chicken. My husband and my BIL both ordered the mix plate, which featured chicken, pork, and beef. I tried some pork and oooh it was overdone! I would not get that. No experience with the beef myself, but both men said it was good. Each plate comes with 6 oz of meat, with the exception of the mix plate, which is 8 oz. Plates also come with white rice and salad. Just to let you know, the salad is an iceberg mix with shredded carrots - nothing too fancy, although there is a selection of dressings on offer. All seating is outside, tho I imagine you could take your plate up to the food court and no one would say anything. Of course, parking is free. I will say that the food hear is nice and fresh - you can totally see them grilling it up outside - and that delicious aroma was what drew is to Liz's in the first place. Service is speedy and food is pretty good - except for the chicken, which is awesome! So try it out here at Liz's! You won't be disappointment - unless you get the pork, maybe. read more

Don't walk, run to super gyros a few stands down, they're much better than the dried out over cooked meat at Liz's BBQ. we ordered two beef combos and a chicken combo and it was not worth the price. If you're craving bbq go anywhere else and save your money. Walking by it smells amazing and my boyfriend and I always wanted to stop by but would always get gyros because the service is quick and it's delicious and worth the price. Today we decided to try something new and we're very disappointed. I'm not sure if the person on the grill was new or what but I do not recommend this place unless you like dry, hard and overcooked meat. Hubby and I followed our noses to this place as we were bringing his mom to the NEX. Since we had just eaten earlier, we ended up getting a pork bbq stick each for $3.45 each to try. The service was prompt and we both enjoyed our bbq sticks as well. We both wished we had waited to eat lunch later in the day otherwise we would have eaten at this place.
