We decided to go to Little Bird for drinks and dinner. The ambiance is amazing. They have an outdoor area, a killer bar, and upscale restaurant inside. Truly top notch. We order some wine, and a couple of apps, Corn Fritters and Mini Tuna Tacos. They were delicious. I was torn about ordering the Filet, but the people at the bar ordered one, and it smelled amazing. When I asked them how it was, he told me that he had to send the first one back, and he was not impressed with the second order. Little Bird has a clean, modern design and ambience that feels like a house. The outdoor dining area has a garden-like feel that is covered and nearly enclosed with a dozen or more rapid overhead fans that keep the air moving and offset the humidity but without feeling blustery or annoying. The food was very good overall with the exception of my gulf catch, which had a strong tarragon seasoning in the couscous paired with the grouper. If you don't like licorice, you won't like this flavor and will be scrambling like I was to hide it with the pesto and cherry tomatoes. Other than that, the food was outstanding including corn fritters containing fish and served with jalapeño tartar sauce, roasted shishito peppers with aioli sauce, and my wife's scallops entree with pistachio crumbles served with pureed cauliflower which were seared to a nice crusty outside texture yet very moist on the inside. Overall, maybe a little overpriced although this is Fairhope, but very nice environment, pleasant service, and nice flavor combinations prepared to near perfection. read more

The Hope Farm was closed for a wedding so a friend recommended Little Bird. I didn't realize that the time of my reservation was at the end of their lunch service and they were switching to a limited menu to prepare for dinner. Our server was so helpful and let the kitchen staff know that we would be placing orders and bought us a bit of time. I LOVED the space. We ate outside. It was cozy and quiet. I ordered the Birds of a Feather first. It was delicious. I also had a Scenic 98 with tequila instead of vodka. I loved that drink too. The Steak Sandwich was a little flat in flavor but it was hot and fresh so I still enjoyed it with the fries. Not pictured are the Roasted Oysters. They were the star of the meal. I would go back purely for the ambiance and a table full of oysters. They also gave me a birthday cake ice cream scoop since it was a birthday lunch. It was really good and a great portion size. We ended up staying so long that dinner was being served. We moved to the inside bar area and placed a dinner order to go. We toured the restaurant and found more areas to love. I love hope farms and came here as it is a sister restaurant and I wanted to check it out. The place is amazing and pays homage to the chef's mother- every room is themed to an aspect of her life. Decor is lovely and ambience is great. The bar is very pretty as well. We ordered crab claws, octopus, the fish (red snapper) oysters beet salad and then the chocolate dessert. Everything was delicious, but the stand outs were definitely the cornbread, red snapper and the dessert. We also ordered the Lady Adams (a tequila based drink) that was also delicious. The food here is very good, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. Waiter did not know their bourbon selection, in fact told us they only had 4 types. We got the seafood tower and server and manager had non idea which oysters were on the tower. They charge $18 for mineral water, which they didn't bother to let us know. The tuna dip is amazing, I asked for more of the crackers they serve with it and our waiter instead brought me a couple of plain saltine crackers. If I am spending $400 I expect much better service. Our party of 5 had a wonderful experience, first came the roasted oysters and the seafood tower. Also the corn fritters. Every single thing was delicious. Next two had yellowfin tuna, two had the special (black grouper) and I had the shrimp and grits. The grit cake (which I've had at one other place) is a twist on the traditional shrimp and grits but let me tell you. It was perfect. Flavor, size and balance. All on point. This is the coolest place! I had no idea it was even here. Our office had our Christmas party here, and it was perfect. They have billiards tables and lots of seating areas with games and playing cards on their tables for people to play. their outdoor space is perfect in nice weather with games and seating groupings and heaters for cooler weather. Our first visit and it was amazing! The whole staff was friendly. Our server AMY made us feel like we were family. She was very knowledgeable of the menu and even talked us to a lunch date for the fried chicken. I had already set my sites on a dinner date. We had the Smoked Gulf Fish Dip as an appetizer with Fire Crackers and it is the perfect combination. Don't pass it up. The Oysters on the Oyster Benedict were fried to perfection! (Perfectly Crunchy). My friend also said that most places over compensate with the Hollandaise but not here, the perfect amount. The biscuits are to die for and the homemade blueberry preserves are out of this world. Just remember ladies, put your elastic pants on or wear your dresses. My husband and I went late in the evening around 20:00 for a snack and sat at the bar. We both enjoyed an order of fried oysters with slaw and two delicious libations. The tartar sauce was made with jalapeños and way spicier than I could ever enjoy. The owners have built a beautiful restaurant and the staff is not shy in telling you about the family heritage supposedly embodied in the rooms. We were a party of 7 and one couple had already dined here for lunch and warned us that the wine was overpriced and that was indeed confirmed. The food was disappointing. The "gulf fish" was amberjack, a disappointment to start with and the remaining choices swordfish and tuna. The swordfish and tuna proved to be adequate. No one else ordered an entree as nothing really appealed to us. We ordered salads and starters with the intent of having the starter as our entree. As it turned out, some of us got all our dishes before some were served at all. When questioned, our server almost became surly. The fried oyster salad was good and not great. The gumbo is very dark and even I did not care for that All in all, a very disappointing evening. As one diner said " if you want pretty, you have it. If you want good food and service at a fair price, think again". It is probably not fair to base an overall rating on one meal but at least for now, Little Bird is lacking. read more

I'm honestly conflicted about giving this relatively new restaurant a three-star review because it's clear the owners have put real effort into creating something special. Unfortunately, our experience just didn't live up to those good intentions. We came in for dinner and chose to sit at the bar. The first thing we noticed was how loud it was -- the acoustics in the bar are pretty rough, and it seems we're not the only ones who've noticed that, based on other reviews. It didn't help that a nearby table was especially loud (one guest in particular), and it would've gone a long way if someone from management had stepped in to politely ask them to keep it down. Still, we wanted to give the place a fair chance, so we ordered the filet mignon. Unfortunately, the first one was almost inedible -- very chewy and just not what you expect for that cut. When the bartender checked in, we told him honestly, and to his credit, he immediately offered to have the kitchen remake it. The second steak was definitely better, but still not great -- just okay. I understand the restaurant features some unique dishes, which is great, but if you're going to have filet mignon on the menu, it needs to be consistently high quality. Either the sourcing or the preparation needs attention, because something was clearly off. Between the difficult acoustics and the uneven food, I'm not sure we'll return on our next trip to Fairhope -- which is a shame, because we usually stay at the charming cottages right next door. Nice spot. It's not been open long so I expected some kinks. We Went for a quick meal on a Tuesday evening. The place was packed. The hostess was very accommodating in arranging a seat for us in the bar. I had special catch of the day which was Grouper. My wife had Shrimp and Grits. We started with the beet salad. All dishes were very good. The shrimp was a variation on the classic dish. Almost like a Gumbo. So we didn't experience any kinks. From service, atmosphere to food, this is a nice addition to downtown Fairhope. Only issue will be parking. I look forward to returning. read more

I eat a VERY limited diet and the chefs, kitchen staff, hostesses and servers have been nothing but accommodating and welcoming. I call ahead of time, the hostess relays my restrictions to the chef, and the back of the house prepares the most perfect entrees for me. Not only do they create these meals, one chef came out to talk to me, and another sent the message via the server, "We look forward to the next time you come." I cannot express my gratitude enough. We had a wonderful experience at Little Bird and our server Matt was amazing! We started with Murder Point oysters, this sweet cornbread and the little tuna tacos. We each got an entrée. I had the Boudin stuffed quail, (which was fabulous), with jalapeño greens. I've got to figure out how to try the recipe myself. My better half had the red snapper special, which was excellent, my dad had the swordfish, and my stepmom had shrimp and grits, and it was actually a little grit cake, which was really cool and quite tasty. We did not have room for dessert, but between the service, the atmosphere, and the food we will be back! Just a quick note - it is a bit loud but we can handle it. I am conflicted writing this review. It is obvious that the owner of Little Bird and his management team care deeply about the restaurant, the facility and its story. However, They have missed their mark. I have been a diner at Little Bird twice. Once for dinner with my party of four. Once for Sunday brunch with my wife. My intention was to experience Little Bird in a broader context. Dinner was fine, not special. The food was fine, the service was fine, the ambiance was fine, the acoustics were challenging, the hospitality was sadly lacking. Our waiter, clearly well versed on the menu, made us endure his monologue describing each item From the left side of the menu to the right side, ingredient by ingredient. I appreciate his knowledge but we would have been better served if he used that knowledge to answer our questions instead of listening to his dissertation. I simply asked the market price for the oysters. I spent $500 for our dinner for four. One of the apps we chose for the table was a smoked fish dip with "fire crackers". I requested additional crackers to finish our smoked fish. I was charged $3.00 for extra crackers. It's certainly not about the three bucks, it's the message it sends. The lack of appreciation for our business. The missing hospitality. For brunch we chose the bar. It was disappointing. The grits in the shrimp and grits was a dry grit cake that detracted from an otherwise tasty dish. I ordered the Southern Eggs Benedict . The fried oysters were very good, however the poached eggs were severely overcooked. Both had the consistency of hard boiled eggs. The service was inattentive at first as the bartender also manned the service bar and was fully engaged with other staff. At an otherwise empty bar we waited for many awkward minutes to be acknowledged. Gratefully a female staff member jumped behind the bar and made things better. The missing element at Little Bird is hospitality. Making customers feel acknowledged, appreciated and special. Food mistakes are easily overlooked, but the lack of hospitality is not. "Danny Meyer, the renowned restaurateur, distinguishes between service and hospitality by defining service as the technical delivery of a product, while hospitality encompasses the emotional experience and how a guest feels during their interaction. We ordered crab claw and Brussels sprouts and they were both delicious. I got the scallops and they were so tender and melted in my mouth. The food was delicious! I had the golden beet salad and the shrimp and grits - both were gluten free. The golden beet salad was only a few bites but very flavorful and the shrimp and grits were a little different - served with a grit cake, small smoky pieces of ham, shiitake mushrooms and other vegetables . . But SO SO good. Cornbread isn't gf but was a big hit for the table and they have a kids menu of either shrimp or chicken (grilled or fried) served with fries.
