An absolute must when you stop by Hudson. The fried whole fish is the crown jewel of this spot. The menu changes a lot, the food is sourced locally and ethically-- interesting and yummy. Staff are always knowledgeable and friendly. The restaurant itself is whimsical, with a flashy design inside and clear about where it stands. What a cool place!!! Upon walking in, you're immediately struck with vibrant colors, unique decorations, and art work all around! The dishes are all tapas style which we loved because we were able to try so many items on the menu! Each dish came out individually which allowed us to enjoy and appreciate each dish before moving onto the next. Everything was so fresh from the kitchen and piping hot! There were 6 of us and we ordered 10 plates which was a perfect amount! Everything we had was sooo good but some of my favorites were the llapingacho, shrimp aguachile which was a special, arancini, and empanada! The winter wedge salad was also delicious and the dressing that came with it was soo tasty! The scallop skewer only came out with 3 scallops so we could've used another one but we were able to split them to get a taste. The chicken dish which was also a special came out at the same time as the Plato tropical which was perfect because they complimented each other very well. Drink wise, we ordered a pitcher of the unknown legend cocktail which was good. My friend got the garden orgy cocktail which was essentially a spicy margarita. I personally liked that better than the garden orgy cocktail but enjoyed both. Awesomeeeee experience overall!! I love I love I loveee this place! I'd come here every single time I'm in the Hudson area. The menu is small (which honestly works in my favor cuz I can never decide what I want lol), so I was thrilled to basically order everything on the menu. We sat at the bar, and our gorgeous bartender was incredible! We were given a rundown of every single drink on the menu, and each one was next-level delicious. Seriously! So creative, so flavorful, so well-balanced. I wish I could've tried them all! And the food? Just mmmm--mouthwatering doesn't even begin to cover it. I'd eat everything there twice, no hesitation. My absolute favorites were the fried fish and the tamales! They switch up their menu, so they might not always be available. I'm just so glad I got to try them. Every single dish we tasted had its own unique flavor, and it was clear how much thought and love went into each one. And the vibe? SO fun. The whole place was colorful, vibrant, and full of energy. Even the bathroom was a whole vibe, super playful and creative in the best way. Another highlight was that we tried the "Love Advice" that's on the dessert menu, and the person gave my friend such thoughtful, heartfelt advice, it was so sweet and meaningful. A fun spot run by genuine people that serve great food. Had the pleasure of visiting this spot with a large group so we could really take advantage of the tapas-style menu. The menu seems to change often enough that it might be useless to list what I enjoyed most but whatever, the stand out dishes for me was the spicy scallop tartare on shrimp chips, the gnocchi, the yuca frita and honestly just all the vegetable dishes. I love when a restaurant can make something simple really sing through just being perfectly cooked and seasoned enough to make the natural flavor come out to its best possible conclusion. Deb's menu is full of stuff like that - be adventurous but don't sleep on the simple comfort options! Please note, their wine list is extensive and about as pleasantly funky as the decor. Would absolutely come back here next time I'm in town if for nothing else than to explore more of the wine menu! read more

The hype is real! Li'l Deb's is the crown jewel of Hudson, written up by all of the blogs, raved about by locals, charming everyone in its path. Now that I've finally dined here after visiting Hudson for years and hearing about it constantly, I can attest to its endearing eccentricity. It is unlike any restaurant I've been to -- in a category all its own. I think it does this purposely: it is loud, it is wild, it is fun, it is flirty, it is not making apologies for just being a funky kid who doesn't fit neatly into any traditional box. The vibes are immaculate, as the kids say. And the food is pretty immaculate, too. Came here at around 8pm on Friday. Li'l Deb's recently began taking reservations, but only for parties of four and up. We checked in with the folks working here beforehand to see how we could best time our arrival in hopes of getting a table, which worked out well for us. We sat indoors, and as you can see from my photos, the lighting is part of the appeal. All of the decor is colorful and quirky -- it all feels quite celebratory. We started with cocktails, which were so-so (the only thing not exceptional about the night). I got the Cel-Ray (forthave gin, celery, chartreuse, pineapple) which was like a celery gimlet and pretty good. My fiancé got the Sexual Healing (cachaça, passionfruit, coconut, lemon), which is more notable in name than it is in flavor. It's apparently a crowd favorite, but we didn't love it. The wines are really where Li'l Deb's stands out, as far as alcohol options go. They actually have a somm on site there, which is surprising given how casual the place is. I think of somms as being more highbrow but that's clearly a misguided assumption on my part. I first tried a rosé that was not to my liking, so our waitress brought us the other featured rosé on the menu which was fantastic (and she comped it, which we greatly appreciated). My fiancé and I then split a glass of the one orange wine on the menu (Lapor Belo, Vina Krapez, Slovenia), which was fantastic. Then, a woman who we had not seen the whole night appeared and asked if I wanted a glass of something off menu, mysterious and intriguing, and of course I said yes. This one was even better -- another skin contact bottle. We later found out that this was the somm, a buried lede but still an exciting one. Because Li'l Deb's is more of a shared plates vibe with relatively smaller portions, we got to sample a good chunk of the menu. Really unlike any other meal we've had. I'd love to know the inspiration behind the menu here, because it is creative, eclectic, whimsical and inspired in such a way that makes the whole meal exciting start to finish. We didn't have a bad bite all night. Eats, below: Silk Road Salad w/ tomato, fried eggplant, feta, coriander-chile vin): A++ This may have been our favorite dish of the night, and this is coming from two people who don't tend to go for tomato. We agreed this was the best tomato salad we had ever eaten. Impossibly fresh, super flavorful. Crispy Potatoes w/ lime pickle aioli, curry leaf, pickled chiles: A Always love a good crispy potatoes dish and the curry leaf and aioli were great ways to spice it up (quite literally). Great if you need your carb fix. Fermented Lentil Dosa w/ wild shiitake + oyster mushrooms, radish, herbs: A Another fun/fresh/flavorful preparation. Loved the mushrooms, lent themselves to the overall earthy flavor profile of the dish. Steamed Cockles w/ tamarind, peanuts, cilantro: A+ I haven't had cockles in ages -- they are like cute little baby clams and I love them. Beautifully seasoned and the peanuts were a nice touch. Beef Skewers w/ garden salsa verde, corn, tomato: A- The beef skewers themselves were solid but not outstanding, but the salsa verde and corn were fantastic. Still a dish worth considering it just didn't blow us away in full the way most of the others did. Finally, just want to reiterate how great the service is here. I'm vaguely embarrassed that I'm only now writing a review of Li'l Deb's, when I've been a giant fan for several years and it's truly in my top 5 happiness-inducing restaurants in the world. Li'l Deb's is not just a restaurant: it's a mood, it's an aesthetic, it's a sanctuary. The food is also excellent, and the wine menu is the most delightful one I've ever seen, but I love coming here because of how the place makes me feel. The staff here all seem to be like family members to one another, and there's so much palpable enthusiasm radiating from them. The décor, too, is an eclectic, colorful mix of tropicalia and modern art and kitschy frou and it's just perfect (check out the bathrooms!). The clientele leans more toward the artsy crowd (imagine: art history professors spending the weekend at their upstate house, cool moms in clogs and overalls, and people who've just spent the day at Dia:Beacon), but there are lots of Hudson residents who seem to love this place, too. So, what to order? I like to get the day's specials: the ceviche, a salad, and a fish entrée. You can't really go wrong with anything; the food is generally Latinx-inflected, nicely acidic, often with the sear of the grill, and both refreshing and savory. Also, the presentation is usually quite colorful (check out their recent feature in Bon Appetit magazine!!). I've never left here disappointed, and in fact, I've been to Hudson a few times JUST to come to Li'l Deb's Oasis - and always try to hit up their NYC popups when they happen. Don't miss out on the [mostly natural] wine list: the descriptors are the best you've ever seen and I won't spoil them for you. Li'l Deb's Oasis is that review, that place. * I had exactly two dinners in Hudson, NY, both of them eaten at Li'l Deb's. When you've so obviously found the best spot in town, why look elsewhere? * "It's the best restaurant I've ever been to": Actual words from the friend I dined with both nights. From its decor to its servers to the ridiculously-inspired-perfectly-executed-100%-delicious plates of food the only comparison I could come up with was San Francisco's original Hamburger Mary's circa 1980's. If you were never at Mary's during this time period you missed it; there's no equivalent today though Li'l Deb's operates in a similar realm: * The coolest, friendliest mix of servers who span the alphabet of descriptors (LGBTQIA++). These folks prepare for work by donning (for instance) a safety vest in neon orange. My life would improve twentyfold if I did the same. * A menu that I can't even follow but I wanted to try EVERYTHING. The Ensalada Del Dia ($13) and Ceviche Del Dia ($16) were the same both nights, raining unbridled joy upon us. The salad contained no lettuce, was held together by a slather of Romeso Sauce, and it wouldn't be finished until we'd wiped the bowl clean. About the ceviche I proclaimed "they don't even need fish in this" (there were scallops) as the sauce was so soupy, limey, and delicious. * They told us that whole fried fish was their specialty but we were never able to get there. On night #2 we'd planned to have the fish but got sidelined by the Salchipapas. And the Sweet Plantains in Yogurt-Cilantro sauce. And the beans. And again that Elote. And also the cocktails (Nipslip, Garden Orgy, Golden Hour). * I don't even know what Salchipapas are but if I were a betting person I'd wager that word translates into "best tasting plateful of food ever, if consumed at Li'l Deb's". The restaurant had a really nice vibe and the service was great and the people were friendly. We were a little disappointed with the food. The portions were pretty small for the price. The plantains were a tad salty and not as sweet as we would like. The octopus was so sour. The surf and turf was decent. The passionfruit flavor was good and the mussels were nice and plump. However we did not really see much pork belly in the dish. For the price we expect at least chucks of pork belly. The shrimp was our favorite dish. They were cooked perfectly. After several disappointing meals on our week-long stay in Hudson, we had low expectations coming here tonight and almost cancelled our reservation when we saw what was on the menu (we are heavy meat eaters and only one dish on the menu had meat). But I'm so glad we didn't because the food here is a revelation, the service leaves you feeling cared for, and the ambiance is so unique and fun. With a baby in tow, we were 20 minutes late for our reservation but when we called to let them know we'd be late, they were gracious about letting us keep the reservation even though when we got there we saw people waiting for a table. Thank you, Lil Deb's! We sat in the backyard, which was a good space for the baby. The food! All the flavors were ON POINT. We ordered what seemed like a random and risky assortment of food but everything we ate surprised us in a good way. Now I want to try everything on the menu! I loved the music and the chill vibe, my drink and the lentil dosa. I think it's cool that they add the living wage onto the bill. I only had about four bites of the big salad I really didn't like it, and it was just sitting on the bar for about 20 minutes-that was very clear-I didn't like it, I said wow this is really bitter, and then the bartender/server asked me if I wanted it to go and I said no thank you I really didn't like it it was overly bitter-and the reaction was "well it IS a bitter green salad." in a kind of mean tone . It wasn't like I ate half of it and complained. Look, I like radicchio and endive as much as the next person but it's nice if it's balanced out with some milder lettuce and flavors. The dressing was good but not enough to drown out bitterness. One other person mentioned that in their review I'm still glad I went because overall it was a good experience but I was left with the impression that the server didn't really care that I was unhappy with the salad-and kind of gave me attitude, so I felt not taken care of and like my experience didn't matter. Most restaurants of that level would offer to either take that off the bill or offer you a substitute. I wanted to send it back but I was too uncomfortable. For context, I rarely send food back probably last time I did it was five years ago. I don't know why someone would offer me a box to take something home when I clearly didn't like it. If I had liked it I would've said "wow this is so good I can't eat it all and I would love to take it home." I work in the service industry and I try to be really kind and polite to folx. having said that if I were back in town I might give it another try because I liked the vibe, but I would not get the salad and would hope for better service. Let me start off with, I hate writing a bad review during a pandemic because we appreciate and support small businesses. WE ALWAYS TIP HANDSOMELY WHEN IT IS DESERVED! We ordered items from the menu *for takeout* and upon checking out, she stated, are you tipping 20%, 25%, or 30%? I noted there were signs that all indicate, "you bust your own table." Knowing we were taking the food away, we did not tip. She said rather loudly, "WHAT, NO TIP?!" Firstly, people do not have to tip if they are taking something to go. Secondly, you do not state that a customer must tip over 20% as if you've served us to some amazing standard. Thirdly, if you instruct people to bust their own tables, WHY DO YOU DESERVE A TIP? I'll even give the benefit of the doubt and say, okay, the staff needs to wipe down the table for COVID measures, fine- YOU DON'T ORDER EACH CUSTOMER TO TOP YOU OFF AT 20%! Unique hipsterized diner with nice staff. Food was very good elevated versions of mostly Latin comfort dishes. Only big downside for me was small portions and quite high prices. If money is not an object for you (or your parents) and you like a hipster vibe don't miss this place. Another unique thing is they have an excellent list of amari and a few meads. However like many American establishments, one shot of amaro costs nearly half the price of the bottle. Not sure why the few places specializing in amari rarely serve small pour flights at a more reasonable price. It was very good but was market priced and came out to $45 (significantly more than the rest of the menu) so ask about it before ordering. I split the meal with my wife who ordered the mussels which were good. She got a oat drink which I did not like. The desserts looked interesting but we didn't order them. They had a fried banana, dunce de leche and ice cream combo that sounded good. Overall, good food and fun atmosphere but expensive and cash only at that which is annoying especially with higher bills than expected. There is no atm on site so you have to walk one block to a gas station with charges a service charge. This place is so unique and eccentric, nothing like what you'd expect to find in a small town like Hudson! Everything from the interior decor and menu was an experience. Their menu isn't very large, but that works out for us because we're pretty indecisive people. Also, I think it helps ensure that the food they serve is quality. Everything in their menu was something I had never heard or tried before, but I loved everything I got and was pleasantly surprised by the combination of flavors. Their wine menu is also very interesting, things are described by how you'll feel while drinking them. Yucca Fries - covered in pesto-like sauce, which made these good I think. Apparently yucca is a taro-like root. Plantains - these were soo good! They're fried and sweet, and we loved the yogurt cilantro dip. The plantains tasted good by themselves and also with the dip. Brazino fried fish - I think this fish is one of the big sells here, so make sure to get it! The fish itself is very tender and cooked just right, whereas the skin is very flavorful and fried. I also like the slightly buttery spicy dip it comes with. Mojo Chicken - if you get the half pound, they'll give you breast and thigh so you get to try both white and dark meat. It's really well cooked and the dip was slightly spicy, but also very good. I'm not really sure how to describe it, but just try it! The interior is pretty crazy and decorated. There are neon signs, abstract art on the walls, and colors and patterns everywhere. He only downside is that the a/c isn't very strong and it was feeling pretty hot and humid. We came here after it was highly rated from many different sources. We had the larb, octopus tostada, kale, patattas with hotdogs. Sadly the first three dishes disappointed us. The chorizo larb was cold. I'm not sure how cold minced pork sits with others but the coagulated fat doesn't give one a good mouth feel. The octopus tostada was very chewy and not cooked long enough. The tostada was also stale. We've eaten at many establishments low and high and have had Peruvian food so we were confused with the quality of what was happening here. This past weekend I was in the Hudson Valley with another young family to take in the beautiful foliage and pumpkin patches. We made a reservation at Li'l Deb's Oasis to check out the hype. Let me say that the vibe and friendliness did not live up to the hype. The service also was extremely poor, I had to wait ~20 minutes for my beer as the waitress even said twice "let me check on it". I am also grateful that my child is too young to fully absorb some of the pictures on the wall or the rhetoric being displayed. THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR FAMILIES, which I take responsibility for as a little more diligence on the place (e.g., their Instagram) would clearly reveal this. The food came out slowly and was overly salty. Stay away from the tamale, I couldn't even finish it. Feel free to order the whole fried fish if you enjoy paying for mostly fish skeleton. Really cute place in the town of Hudson. Visited during the long weekend and were happy with the quality of food. Definitely a unique restaurant in comparison to some of the other food options around. The vibe is welcoming, bright and generally carefree! The staff is friendly and helpful. We had the plantains and the fried yuca for starters: both were good but I loved the salsa verde on the yuca. For mains we had the shrimp and the veggie platter. They give you a generous amount of shrimp in the order but the sauce was flavorful but a bit too rich for me, some more acid would have been good. The side of bread was delish. This was not my first time at Lil Deb's but it was my first time eating food there. All I can say is that I was not disappointed. They offer a diverse menu with a number of dishes to suit your level of hunger and that include flavors you won't find elsewhere. I went with my partner for an anniversary dinner and some fun and we were really impressed. We ordered the crispy potatoes with a beautiful salsa brava and mustard Mayo, the Plato tropical and chorizo larb. As someone who eats larb almost weekly at this point I was skeptical of the chorizo but it worked really well with their fish sauce caramel and house pickles. Portion sizes were beyond what I was expecting for the price point and I was glad to see that a portion of the bill goes towards racial justice and mutual aid organizations. We came on a busy Saturday night and the staff was great. Our server Julia knew exactly when to stop by and seemed to know exactly what we needed before we could articulate it. Although I didn't try the natural wine this time, the Barbie dream house cocktail was perfectly balanced. I also really enjoyed the pacing of the dishes as they were timed perfectly and allowed us to enjoy all of the flavors without being overwhelmed. We had Li'l Deb's Oasis cater our rehearsal dinner and they did an absolutely incredible job. The food was so, so good, and they worked with us to come up with an amazing menu. Everything was to die for -- super well prepared and beautifully arranged dishes. On top of that, the staff there are so incredibly generous, kind, fun, and engaging. I had the chicken soup with just the broth and vegetables (without the added chicken) and it is very difficult to explain exactly how delicious this soup was. It popped! As soon as I have the first bite I was completely blown away and shocked. So many flavors that all paired so well, and a ton of fresh vegetables. This place looks like a very cute little hippie diner inside and to be honest, I did not expect much from the food. Usually activist food spaces like this don't deliver in taste what they do in ambiance. Not the case for a Little Debs. I really like the people who work there, I love the ambiance, I feel good about their politics, AND the food is out of this world. Tasty! Tasty! Tasty! Quality ingredients. Ummmm HOLY WOW!!! Lil Deb's was highly recommended by several friends, and they absolutely weren't wrong. Funky and chill vibe and great food- what else could you want? We sat at the bar, grabbed a couple cocktails, and were planning to just get a bunch of small plates, but the bartender let us know that they were known for the whole fish, so we got that. It was OUTRAGEOUS! We also got the crispy potatoes and seaweed rice and finished with hibiscus tiramisu. Would go back again ASAP - thanks for an amazing night! read more

I literally have no words about how awful this place is. Tiniest portions on earth. Insanely overpriced. What is a living wage fee? I understand that food industry workers are seriously underpaid so I appreciate the thought, but when you are giving your customers the tiniest plates of typically cheap dishes for a lot of money and they don't taste that good, it feels a bit ridiculous. It felt like the restaurant was pandering to a specific population of upper class, white, queer gentrifiers in our beautiful Hudson Valley. If you really care about people of color, communities of color, and redistributing wealth like you so brand yourself, don't make the menu completely inaccessible to those populations lol. read more
