Stopped by on a packed Friday night and was told it would be 15 minutes until we'd get seated. We wandered out to the back patio and got drinks and were really surprised the hostess sifted through the whole crowd to seat us when ready! As the city gets bigger and you lose your favorite folks leaving your favorite haunts, you realize the city isn't as big as you first thought. Walking into Licha's brought back that reminder to me. I realized when we walked in, this was Dan's place. Our first encounter with Dan was a Vespaio. He was incredibly well versed in Wine and a very affable gent. Before he left Vespaio he mentioned he was doing something new and hoped we would see him again. Low and behold, here he was, smiling give us a hug and welcoming us. There were 6 of us and originally were sat outside however that didn't bode well since the sun was brutal. The hostess arranged a quick move to a table inside. When the waitress came over with Dan in tow, I asked if he would mind just bringing out food to us, his choice. Like a chef's table, albeit one small request, no shellfish since Ms. Suz is allergic. Holy Crap, what an excellent idea that was. I just wish I could remember the dishes which were shared. The largest main was a dish of pork, bone in, which was in an awesome savory tomato based stock. Perfect spice and texture. We had a quinoa stuffed relleno, fresh tortillas, salsa's and rita's. All in all great stuff. To top it off when we finished stuffing ourselves, we left and again got to meet Dan's mom and grandmum whom the restaurant was named after. Dan's a whiz in the kitchen and it is obvious his front of the house skills shine with the service which we received was excellent. We look forward to seeing Dan again real soon. read more

The air-conditioning didn't work and it was drippy hot, the service was poor and slow and the only information given on any food or drink was that it was all "amazingly delicious and top-notch, top-shelf", no descriptors, no help in understanding the menu or food. Almost everything came on a cake, which I thought might be a nice been or rice baee but instead it was like one week old inedible hard, compressed bread. $130 later the four of us left unsatisfied and still hungry. read more

What a dump. I don't know what people see in this place. The food is bland and overpriced, and the service is a notch lower than terrible.

Part of the reason I like this restaurant so much is that I worked so hard to find it. I was visiting Austin for the first time with six other people and was looking at the NY Times article about what to do in Austin over 36 hours. The article was a little old...okay a couple years old, but I had high hopes. There was a Mexican restaurant on the list called Papi Tino's. So, after telling everyone how great this place was supposed to be I dragged everyone from Brazos to the other side of the highway on East 6th, and we walked and walked, looked and looked. Papi Tino's was nowhere to be found. The area felt a little sketchy, and a man on a bicycle yelled at us. (However, the area is now up and coming). We found where the restaurant was supposed to be on GoogleMaps and it was called Licha's. We walked around to the back and there was a little opening, where we poked our heads in. There, we saw a raked sand backyard with industrial spools and painted metal chairs and tables. We explained our confusion and inquired about the status of the restaurant; the chef informed us that Licha's was the new restaurant there, serving Mexican street food. That sounded delicious to us, but it wasn't going to open for another couple of hours. So, we walked back towards where we came from, and a couple blocks towards the highway was a food truck called Pueblo Viejo. IT WAS SO GOOD! I had chicken fajitas and my friend had beef fajitas. The beef fajitas were the best. The limeade was also delicious. Oh, back to Licha's. We went back there a couple weeks later and it was very good! It is fun to sit outside in the backyard. I had a "cazuelita" which is a hot clay pot with food inside. My cazuelita was carne deshebrada con chile cascabel, which is shredded brisket, onion, guacamole, and crema de escabeche. For dessert I had a Mexican chocolate mousse. I also wanted an after dinner drink, something with kahlua, so asked what they could make. The waitress suggested kahlua with mezcal and a cocoa-chili pepper rimmed glass. Sounded good...but it was way too strong! I could only take a couple sips, but the margaritas on the rocks were good and much tamer. I went another time with my parents and we sat at the same table in the backyard. Although pleasant, BEWARE of the fire ants! They bit my dad (which left his legs itching for weeks) and subsequently he didn't want to go back the next time he was in town. I went twice during SXSW. They had a special menu to accommodate the large numbers of people passing through, so you could order either tortas or quesadillas. I ordered the carne deshebrada quesadillas, basically brisket and cheese. They were delicious and my new favorite! I got them both times and will try to order them the next time I go even though it might not be on the menu. There was also a special drink menu, and I tried the "lemonacha" which was lemonade, hibiscus tea, and vodka. It was awesome, and Knox also liked it. read more

I just moved to Austin so my friend suggested we go to Lichas! The house margaritas and guac are amazing! Service was okay.. There was an hour wait (granted it was Friday night) & we had to ask like 2 servers multiple times for chip refills. I decided to order the pork and bacon quesadillas and they were good, I wouldn't say great. I'm really not big on corn tortillas so I'm a little biased. My friend had the delicious Al Pastor tacos and I wish I would have ordered that. It comes out looking more like fajitas and I loved the added pineapple! read more

Went there for a birthday dinner a couple of weeks ago and waited over an hour (on a Wednesday) for a table. They don't split checks, so with a group of 7 unrelated women that was kind of annoying, but I get it. We have celebrated birthdays at various restaurants around Austin with this group of friends over the years and this was the first place where the server didn't notice the balloons and cake that was brought with, or just chose not to say anything or acknowledge the obvious (for comparison, we've gone other places and had the server ask whose birthday it was and say HP or offer a free dessert, or offer to keep the cake in their fridge, etc.) Often had to remind them more than once that we ordered a drink refill, and our server would disappear for 15-20 minutes at a time. The chips were stale and nothing special about them, but the main courses and drinks were delicious. I will go back with a smaller group to see if the service is better. I think the food and drinks are worth it. read more

My friend and I were looking for a new place to try out that had outdoor seating and though this would be the perfect place. It was really busy and we were prepaid to wait but things started looking iffy when it took about 10 minutes before anyone even greeted us. It was a really nice server who was obviously busy but he told us that he would get the hostess for us right away. The host immediately told us that it was an hour long way for both inside and outside. At that time my friend and I noticed 2 open seats at the bar. We asked if we could sit there and the host said yes. We felt pretty lucky to not have to wait. I put our menus on the bar and told the bar tender we were going to sit there and he said ok. We went to wash our hands and when we came back, a couple was sitting in our seats. I wasn't going to say anything but the host was walking by so I told her those 2 just sat in our seats. Without slowing down or even a glance she said flatly, "Sorry." and walked off. I have heard they have good food and I loved the colorful interior decor. I completely understand when restaurants get hectic and busy but the fact that the hostess was blatantly rude to us and basically ignored us merits this place an unfortunate 1 star for me. Delicious Mexican food, a bit on the fancy side. Super cute restaurant, good margaritas. The ceviche is fantastic. The guac is meh. The tacos are served in 4s, in cast iron skillets- the pork one crispy and flavourful. The duck salad is divine and huge! The service was great. I would come again, for sure. read more

I visited this building for the first time ever, and I was pleasantly surprised. Many businesses have tried and failed in this particular setting however Licha's seems to work really well. I must disclose that I did drop by consciously during happy hour because of the great prices. The food and drink were excellent, and it's a great place to take some of your friends who think that all Mexican food is just enchiladas and tons of orange queso. The only weird thing that happened during my visit, was the server picked up our chips and salsa right after we stopped ordering food, even though the chips were still full and we were still eating them. He just casually walked over and pick them up without asking or missing a beat. After that we felt sort of awkward, and didn't stay for another drink. Which is sad because, half the place was still empty, and it's not like there was a need to turnover seats. SPEAKING OF SEATS, what is up with that sliver of a bench? Beware! Sat at the bar and had a phenomenal meal with great service. We had excellent horchatas to drink - one with a shot of espresso the other plain. The bartender said they make it fresh there. Recommend the ceviche and queso with grilled mushrooms. Everything was homemade and fresh. read more

Went here with a group of 8 for a birthday dinner on Saturday Night. We enjoyed the margaritas while we waited for a table to open up and were finally seated after about an hour and a half. We were in agreement that the service was pretty slow, especially when it came time to pay the bill or get a drink from the inside bar. With other guests waiting to be seated, you would expect the staff to move a little more quickly but they were friendly, nonetheless. We enjoyed our food and the server was helpful in explaining what the different menu items were, but the whole dining experience lasted much longer than it should have. read more

Pros: Salsa, margaritas I emailed the manager almost 3 weeks in advance for a Suprise Bday dinner, which I confirmed again a week before. The day of a girl calls saying she would "try her best" to seat me at my time. Irritated I wanted to see if it was just a misunderstanding. Nope! Almost, an hour after my reservation time we had not sat down, so we decided to seat ourselves. At this point the "Suprise" was ruined." We ordered, but it took forever between drinks, chip refills, and once we got food (fajitas), had to wait until the food was cold for more tortillas. After the bill came it was not able to be split. We each wrote down painfully what we all had, cash and card, only for the waitress to ignore and apply all cash and use one card. WHAT A MESS! When we were leaving the waiters asked if they could eat the rest of our cake??? Seriously?? I emailed the manager if for nothing else to express my dismay for the lack of reservation. Instead of a reply with apology, I got "With all do respect it was an accommodation, not a reservation." If you plan on a big party do NOT come here. I usually don't write these reviews, but this just bothered me considering I worked with the manager weeks before. read more

Great service, great food, and great drinks. Really great selection of drinks to start the evening with. I had the La Madrina and it was really refreshing. Champiqueso (Queso with mushrooms) was devoured as was their guac. For dinner we had the lamb shank special, the Barbacoa de Chivo, the Alambre (skirt steak taco), and the Swiss Chard salad - all were incredibly flavorful. As if that wasn't enough we topped off dinner with the lime sorbet, tres leches cake and the chocolate cake - all were perfectly executed. The owner/chef stopped by the table and wanted to make sure everything was good - you could see that he really cared. So we have a new local favorite. We'll be back!! read more

We came here the day after it opened and at least once every two weeks since then. INCREDIBLE food. One plate will fill you up and it isn't overpriced, especially considering the high quality and care that seems to go into it. The service is always spectacular, everyone there is extremely eager to make you feel welcome. Homemade corn tortillas on everything, homemade chips and salsa, etc. Only disappointment so far has been that it's closed on Sunday and Monday. Keep doing what you're doing Lichas Cantina. I went with high expectations on the recommendation of an acquaintance, but alas Licha's did not live up to my expectation, supposedly "food from the interior of Mexico." My food (chips & salsa, tacos al pastor & Mexican chocolate cake with cajeta) was okay, but I don't need to return. The environment was too dark to see my food, which I need to enjoy it! The two salsas were sweet and oily. The HH margarita was a bit bitter. The music was too loud, and I'm pretty sure that the place is not ADA compliant. The price was high for Mexican food, but probably because of the large portion sizes. The corn tortillas were very good and the service was nice. Don't waste your time, if you're interested in real interior food from Mexico . . . but give it a try if you're interested in another hipster experience in hipster Austin. read more

Holy heck this place is unique in their food preparation, taste and combinations of flavor. It's an old house turned into bar and restaurant. Their bar drinks are amazing and they don't pour short! Our waiter took his time explaining and recommending dishes to us even though they were swamped. Amazing food. So good. It's too bad we don't live here because I would defiantly go back.
