If you're into cookies in NYC, a commonly known tidbit is that Levain has some of the best chocolate chip cookies in the city. While they first opened as a regular bakery in 1995 on 74th Street in the UWS, their cookies really hit it big in the early 2010's--suddenly everyone was talking about the cookies that were not only delicious but massive, like the size of a small fist. Fast forward to now, they have numerous locations across 7 states, including NY, NJ, IL, DC, MD, MA, and PA, with new stores opening in CA. Walking into each store the look is consistent, deep blue subway tile, light-toned wood, mixed with white walls, a clean and welcoming aesthetic to showcase pastries. While they have a handful of other pastries, their main product aside from cookies are their freshly baked bread loaves--French bread and sourdough are good here. The cookies are the stars here--they're most well-known for their chocolate chip cookies, which are indeed delicious, and really you can or should only eat half a cookie at a time considering how buttery and chocolatey they are. Aside from quality chocolate and other ingredients, part of their draw is using brown butter and a well-balanced use of salt. However they aren't quite at the top of my list for three reasons: 1) I find them a little too gooey in the middle instead of chewy...my preferences are soft, chewy and more cooked, less oily. 2) If you set this cookie down on a napkin for 15 minutes and pick it up again you'll see what I mean. 3) There are a looooot of good chocolate chip cookie recipes out there and many a bakery makes a delicious version (I mean they are chocolate chip cookies after all)--though of course part of the draw is their consistency. This location was pretty busy compared to most locations I visited, I also think I have experienced better customer service at other locations as well. I think this location, maybe due to all the traffic it receives, the greetings were less warm. They didn't have the warm welcoming that the smaller locations seem to have, it was just like who's next? I did have a guy who helped me and was very polite, assisted me with a dilemma I was having. I was told that the carrot cake cookies would be ready in 8 minutes by a girl who I told that I would return for it. Came back and she was M.I.A., I tried to get another girl to assist me after she was helping someone but she just kind of ignored me. I didn't want to have to stand in now a long line after already making a visit and now a return for my cookie. I'm glad the guy assisted me otherwise I would have just left. He did explain to me the cookie had apricot and pecans, I appreciate that because what if I had a nut allergy. So glad I got to finally try Levain. I've of course tried all the copycat recipes at home, but there's something about actually coming here that can't be beat. First, the SMELL! Oh my goodness. You walk in and are hit by a wall of delicious smells. It's magical. The fresh, warm, gooey cookie right when you purchase is unmatched. However, I saved half of mine for a day (it is pretty large and rich) and it kept so well and was just as delicious 24hrs later. I got the chocolate peanut butter chip cookie and as a PB lover it really hit the spot. So incredible. We came on a weekday afternoon and there was a good line at the bakery already. Luckily the line moved at a decent speed. I found out their most popular cookie is the chocolate chip walnut cookie so that's the one I tried. I also bought the Two Chip Chocolate Chip cookie for someone else. The cookies were $5.25 each. The chocolate chip walnut cookie was large in size (very thick) and pretty good. I only ate half and was already sugared out. (But to be fair, I had an ice cream before coming here.) Levain Bakery's cookie are huge. You can watch the workers make the giant scoops of cookies in the back. They have a variety of chocolate cookie flavor as well as oatmeal raisin. They usually have a limited edition cookie flavor and when I went, it was lemon cookie. They also sell pastries and loaf slices - lemon and coffee cake. In case you are interested, they give out postcards that have a map of NYC. The staff provided good customer service and the shop was fairly clean. read more

Before traveling to NY I started to see mixed reviews on Levain's. Some said great and some said overhyped. I am SO glad that I didn't listen to the people saying it was overhyped. There was a line just to the door so the wait was not that bad. They run the store very efficiently and that is to no one's surprise when you have to make as many delicious cookies as this place does. I got a double chip Ala'mode and asked for two spoons just in case someone wanted to try it. I didn't have to force anyone but after my first bite of that cookie I insisted. A nice crunch on the outside with a softer center full of chocolate chips and somehow not overly chocolaty tastes. Which made me love it because I only like a little bit of chocolate.
