Ahhh where do I begin? Letterman's was a staple for me in college and many other students at Kutztown University. It's been almost 10 years since my last visit so I had to see if it was as good as I remembered or if my drunken taste buds all those years ago got the best of me. We'll, let me say it's just a delicious as I remembered. I mean it's breakfast gem. I've been to many fancy brunches at Instagram worthy restaurants and most of them can't hold a candle to the quality of Letterman's. I ordered what was my favorite meal in college the Deluxe Cheesesteak Omelette (peppers, onions, bacon, steak, and cheddar cheese) and it comes with a side of hash browns and toast. It's still the top 3 omelettes I've had and it's not 3 or 2. Beyond the food being delicious the prices are standard for breakfast. believe nothing is really over $15 but the amount of food you get is massive. There's no way you can eat your entire meal in a single setting. Speaking of settings Letterman's is a VERY small diner. If you snag a table you're going to be a bit more comfy because at the main counter (bar stool seating) you will be elbow to elbow with whomever is next to you. !!!!IMPORTANT!!!! While the food is amazing upon looking at other reviews I decided to take a look at their Facebook page. I'm assuming the owner of the restaurant is in control of these page and is extremely out of touch with the current social and political climate that is affecting Black people in America. I'm not going to call him a racist because I only did a surface level dig but a lot of what he supports is anti Black. While there my experience wasn't bad with him or his staff but I expect that's a front. As much as I love the food I like to be fully transparent in my reviews and I will not be supporting his establishment in the future. I went to Letterman's for breakfast while I was in town for work. Let me start by saying the portions are HUGE! I ordered the combo #5 which. I thought it was going to be a standard, 2 eggs, a slice of toast, some hash with 2 slices of bacon. Boy was I wrong! Food was great, service was good--But beware, PPE and social distance isn't not a thing inside the diner. It's small with a few tables against the wall and bar seating directly across. I sat far away from other customers but the diner quickly filled up, customer came in and sat right next to me on both sides. No one was wearing a mask at the diner either except me so just keep that in mind. read more

Let me start by saying the food was EXCELLENT! However, the service and conditions could have been better. I asked my waitress twice for water. She never brought it. I then asked the person who served me my food, and she brought it. I should not have to ask three times for water. Also, the server put her thumb on the lip of the coffee pot. GROSS! Long story short, this place is incredibly cramped, not very clean, the food is extremely greasy, and my fiancé and myself got severe food poisoning. She even pointed out that the guy cooking the food wasn't wearing gloves, never washed his hands, and was directly touching the food after touching everything else in the restaurant including his sweaty face. We should have left immediately. Outside of this, I have no complaints against the staff, they were really nice and attentive, they just gotta work on the hygiene. read more

Not terrible. Definitely a hole in the wall kind of place. I saw their Facebook page with a heaping breakfast displayed and I was intrigued. On a Thursday morning, after a 35 minute drive, my buddy and I sat down for some grub. Personally, I think the guy has his grill just a bit too hot. The hash browns were excellent, but everything else was just cooked too hard, including the bacon. To be fair, it's a small grill and there's just no room. The portions are huge. Huge. While that may appeal to some, I'd rather have quality over quantity. This place is small. Don't go there with a group expecting to be seated like the Knights of the Round Table. Don't expect a hostess to greet you. When you sit at the counter you may be rubbing elbows with the next guy. Service was fine. Parking is on the street. Breakfast ends and lunch starts early here, like 10:45, so if you want breakfast get there early. I would certainly return. For me, it just didn't knock my socks off and it is too far a drive for what I experienced. If I was in Kutztown in the morning and someone wanted to go there I'd do it. read more

An institution in Kutztown. Portions are huge and totally worth the price. Food is what you would expect from an american diner. The quality isint amazing, but you get a huge portion. Downsides are that the dining area is very very cramped. Dont expect to find a seat easily unless you are by yourself. When we ordered takeout, it took 40 minutes for our relativly benign order, so fairly slow. Eggs in our order were overcooked. Kitchen is open for all to see, so it seems clean enough. Spaces between surfaces/appliances have some buildup though. Overall, its just fine, but I would rather frequent other local businesses due to higher food quality. read more

We knew from the "Don't Tread on Me" flag hanging in the front we would like it. People were friendly, food was great. While in town for the Kutztown Folk Festival, I knew I needed to reconnect with my childhood by eating as much scrapple as possible in a four day period. My mother had heard about a tiny diner in the center of town, open only for breakfast (which starts at 1am when the University is in session!) and known for generous portions and an "eclectic" menu. 23 seats, all filled at all times. One, maybe two servers, and a kitchen helper, depending on the day. One cook, managing one grill. More menu possibilities than one normally sees at a full service restaurant with a massive staff. We were lucky enough to make it there twice in four days. (And I look forward to a return trip!) For our first meal we played safe. Sausage and eggs for my boy, scrapple and eggs for me and my mother. I also ordered a short stack of waffles, but they were ignored completely when I saw my slice of scrapple. A four inch square of pork infused corn meal, perfectly fried and placed next to two scrambled eggs. All I could think when I took the first bite was "I can't wait to come back tomorrow!" The boy said the same thing when he bit into his sausage. Whew, because he had little choice! My mother was busy discussing politics with the stranger to her left, and did not want to leave in the first place, so coming back the next day made perfect sense. Breakfast the second day was all about discovery for my mother and myself. My boy ordered the sausage again, because that's just what he does. Turns out that if you don't grow up eating scrapple it seems a bit odd somehow. * My mother and I decided to split an omelet, because we'd seen their size and knew that we would never move again if we each tried to order our own. Then we took our time deciding what we wanted. The winner in every way, was crab, peppers, onions, tomatoes, and pepper jack cheese. Served with a mountain of hash browns. (And yes, a side of scrapple!) $13 for a breakfast that we split in half and had enough left over for a third person. The portions of each component were generous and well balanced, so each forkful had the perfect amount of everything. The cook was able to get our three plates out in a timely manner while also dealing with the 20 other people ordering from his astonishing menu. Everything was cooked perfectly, and though he certainly did not have time to stop and chat, he was able to spare a smile as he slid my plate in front of me. I thanked him kindly for the meal and the show, as watching him work on the single small grill was a sight to behold. If I had my way, I would live much closer to Letterman's Diner. I'd be able to make this tiny place a regular stop. I would sit, ask for some coffee, and then work my way through the menu, hoping to make it to the end of three pages of omelet choices before the menu changed. I'd be distracted by the daily specials, and I might even order from the lunch menu once or twice. Scrapple would be the only constant. *My boy would like me to mention that if Letterman's Diner would grill some Spam for him, they would be at the top of his list of favorite restaurants on the Mainland, so he understands my joy when I am near my preferred breakfast meat. read more

The food is okay if you like grease and food falling off of the plates. The diner is super small, and you're basically elbow to elbow with everyone there. The owner is EXTREMELY rude and racist. He likes to make it known. So if you're anything other than white, I would steer clear. You are better off going to The Quality Shop, Saucony Creek, or Airport Diner. This place is fantastic. Breakfast is my favorite meal at Letterman's but lunch is pretty darn good as well. They do middle of the night tacos as well, but I'm never up at 1am to be there. Haha. Letterman's is an old 23 seat diner car, so you may have to wait for seats. With just my husband and I, we usually find seat within 5 minutes on the weekend (if there isn't a line out the door), but I will say it is certainly harder to get seats (together) with a group of 4 or so. My favorite is the Mudflap (hashbrowns, onions, mushrooms, bacon, brown gravy and american cheese, w/ eggs) and my husband always gets the cheesesteak omelette, but the specials are always fantastic. The best special I've had so far is the Mama Mia (Omelette with meatballs, marinara, bell peppers, onions, and cheese w/ garlic bread) and I can't wait to try the Blueberry/Bacon Waffles the next time they are on special when I'm there. Went by here due to hearing how good the food is from others in the area the place is literally a dine in where it's big enough to seat maybe 20 people max in between there bar set up and the few tables they have. I sat a at a table for 2 since it's either a table for 2 or a bar seat which is very tight for there employees to move around to get to people on half of the small facility. The food was good a little pricy for being a cash only establishment. The service wasn't bad either only reason why it's a 3 star and not higher is because I was rushed it took a while to get the food and once I did It felt like they were rushing to have me pay and leave when I just got my food read more

I finally took up Doug Letterman on his breakfast invitation, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Special of the day was Irish Eggs Benedict. Two English Muffins, topped with house made corned beef hash, melted Swiss cheese and hollandaise sauce. Crispy hash browned potatoes smothered in house made SOS (creamed chipped dried beef) evened out the plate. The star of the show was, without question, the house made corned beef hash. Real brined brisket of beef. The taste of the brine and pickling spices really came through, all the while complimented tremendously by the creamy hollandaise and Swiss cheese. I savored every bite. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this meal. The SOS was also top of the line. Executed very well, making PA Dutch Grandma's smile ear to ear throughout Berks County. The only rival this SOS has is Wally's Deli in Allentown. The food here is easily now one of my top breakfast spots. My only complaint is it was 66 degrees outside and 79 degrees inside (based on the AC thermostat I looked at). I worked up a little lather, but worth it to have this tremendous meal. Letterman's has that classic diner feel with food that far exceeds the traditional diner faire. The selection at Letterman's is varied and they offer items that you wouldn't see at a normal diner. They have everything from a five meat omelet to the standard scrambled eggs and toast. The menu is large and there is sure to be something for everyone. On our most recent trip, I had a miner's breakfast (french toast, eggs, home fries, and bacon) and my girlfriend had an egg white veggie omelet (onions, mushrooms, hot peppers, tomatoes). The platters were huge, they were prepared well and everything was nice. This is a popular spot for KU students so on Saturday and Sunday mornings there are usually quite a few people enjoying a meal. I came here in thought of getting the worst possible food but instead the cook Doug came through in more ways then one. I first came to get a basic breakfast. Something simple. Scrambled eggs with cheese and toast with butter and French toast. I thought that was completely amazing. Then I tried the Poseidon. The crab meat left my mouth watering with joy and excitement. The brilliant combination of the hollandaise with the crab meat and with the mushroom had me at hello. I highly recommend this place. The downside.
