Fantastic and filling meal. Everything was well prepared and was delivered to our table in a timely manner. The portions were large and reasonably priced, and tasted very fresh and flavorful. The menu provides multiple options and a nice variety of which will certainly make you want to come back to try something new and different. My one daughter loved the pizza which was made with care and consideration for her allergies. It was larger than she expected and she was able to take half home for another satisfying meal. My other daughter stated she semi-enjoyed the shepherds pie, which had large chunks of beef in it. She liked the texture but felt that the gravy was a bit too much/something was off. She did state she preferred the shepherds pie she got from Hershey Harvest better, but this was still good. I loved my crab cake, broccoli, and onion rings. I thought the food was excellently prepared and flavorful. My only complaint was I got too full and couldn't eat it all. I would certainly order it again. The atmosphere is casual and has an average noise level. I appreciate the spacious dining area which gives ample room for guests to not feel rushed or claustrophobic. It was clean and well maintained. The bathroom was also clean, well maintained, and well stocked. My plan is to certainly return in the future and try some other items on the menu. Came in really hungry and excited having not been here in a long time. I was waited on by Kaiti, she is super nice! I ordered the Burn Burger, medium rare. What I got was not even anywhere close to medium rare. It was very overcooked and very well done. The server was apologetic. I said it was "fine". Not her fault. We've dined here a number of times and have been happy every time. They do get busy so you may have to wait a little for a table but the food is always good. They also brew their own beer and I have enjoyed all that I've tried. It's a nice comfortable atmosphere and the staff is always nice and helpful. They do have some gluten free options. I'm not from the area, about an hour away. I wound up in Kutztown to grab something from facebook market. My boss pointed me to this place, his son goes to college out here. I really appreciate the lead! Shout out to Tim and Bart at the bar! Bart is a funny guy, has a clever sense of humor. First he told me I had to order drinks first before ordering food, said it with such a straight face I fell for it. I'm usually keen on the jokes. I ordered the cheese steak egg rolls but got tater tots instead, Bart was ready to correct that immediately upon arrival but I declined, I'm adventurous with food. The tater tots were BANGIN'. Tim overheard me gawking over the sauce and brought me out an extra cup without me asking. The guys at the bar have eyes behind their heads I swear! I got the flight of beers, I don't recall what I chose but for the price it's well worth it. They have a very well rounded selection. My wife order the peach sangria, that was another drink for the record. She swears it was the best sangria she ever head. I took a sip and I agree. Bart keeps up with what's going on around the world so it was refreshing to have an educated conversation with someone about the news. Usually the bar tenders are sucked into their job, seldom do I have conversations with them. I appreciate the hospitality. The food was AMAZING! It was so fresh! My wife ordered the spin dip with a grilled cheese, I ended up with the taters tots and Nashville chicken sandwich. The spin dip did not taste like it was just microwaved, definitely set the bar high for spin dip. Tater tots were exploding with flavor, the sauce is out of this world. The grilled cheese puts all the grilled cheeses I make to complete shame. The Nashville chicken sandwich was so good, I just left the pickles inside of it because they complemented the flavors very well (usually I take them out to eat them separately). The establishment is very unique, a "tavern" is an understatement. I was expecting to be shoulder to shoulder at the bar. I walked in, was quickly greeted and was able to find a seat at the bar. The place is huge, it's like the palace of taverns. Hats off to the owner! It's obvious he or she put a lot of work into this place, especially the menu. We were in the area but are not familiar with it. Did a quick Yelp search, called to confirm they were open and serving then headed over. We made the right decision! Ordered the buffalo chicken egg rolls to start and they were wonderful! They were also a larger portion then I anticipated. We would up both ordering a cup of chili and a tavern grilled cheese. Everything was so good!! The chili was great and you could pick exactly what you wanted on top....and even if you wanted beans and/or meat. Very nice option to have! The grilled cheese consists of four cheeses I believe and garlic on the bread which was a wonderful addition! My friend also got a flight of beer which he enjoyed and mentioned that it was a great price as well. If we ever find ourselves in the area again, we will definitely be stopping by! I haven't been here since I was in college at KU many years ago but it feels very much the same as then! Food is decent; probably some of the nicest food in Kutztown area. Unfortunately, this place is absolutely the bottom of the barrel. Overpriced food, absolutely horrendous service. The building is kept dark enough that you cannot see the cockroaches skittering across the floor. The Bain Maries have cockroaches in them. There is a massive mold build-up under the dishwasher in the kitchen. Hell, one time I saw the kitchen manager fish a roach out of the marinara sauce and tell the pizza cook to keep using the sauce. Pretzel app and mozzarella app were both good. Pretzel was huge, four of us shared it. Tater tot app got rave review from person that ordered it. Cuban panini was a little over done and as a result crispy outside overpowered the flavor. Cheeseburger was nice sized, and wings looked very good. Pumpkin ale was good with spices on the glass rim. We have to travel about 40+ minutes to get here, but my husband loves the Pork Shank, so we made the drive last Sunday. We were very hungry when we arrived and he was really looking forward to his meal which has always been excellent in the past. However this time when he cut it apart the inside was ice cold. We told the waitress and her response was that she didn't make it. Yes, we know that. Please take it back to the kitchen and tell them. She came back and said they were going to remake it. About 15 minutes later, after I had already finished eating my meal, she brought the original meal out again-not a new one- and to be honest it didn't look very appetizing now - no pool of gravy anymore, etc. My husband was in the bathroom and as I looked at it I thought it was odd that there was no steam coming up from it so I touched the meat left on the bone and it was still cold. I touched meat on the mashed potatoes and that was cool too. So I called the waitress over again and told her it was still cold and she took it back again. It's hard to believe a restaurant doesn't use a food thermometer to test the insides of big chunks of meat to make sure it's cooked. I believe this meal comes frozen from a vendor and they reheat it on demand. When my husband came back he couldn't believe it came out cold again and was done trying (besides getting hangry by now). So when she brought it out a 3rd time he didn't even let her put it down and just told her to take it back to the kitchen (I will admit he wasn't very nice about it this time). A short while later I presume it was the manager and the cook came to the table. The cook argued with me that it was warm when he sent it out. I told him I touched it in 2 places and it was cold. He said he touched it and it was warm. Hopefully he wears gloves in the kitchen when he's touching people's food! Maybe he was talking about the 3rd time, but it was definitely not warm when I touched it the 2nd time. So much for the adage "the customer's always right ":( Anyways the manager gave us a half-hearted apology and they walked away. They didn't charge us for the pork obviously, but did make him pay for his beer and obviously my meal since I ate it. You'd think they wouldn't have charged for the beer as a show of good will. On a previous visit over a year ago, I had a hair in my food and there was a big bug (cockroach??) crawling on the wall and then the table! That time they comped my meal, but not his. Friends of ours who run a restaurant were shocked they didn't comp the whole meal that time. So who knows if we'll go back. I don't know if Matt the owner reads these, but if no one tells you this stuff, you won't know what goes on in your restaurant. read more

I have been to the Kutztown Tavern more times than I care to count for my job at Kutztown University, and I have nothing but incredible things to say about it. The food is delicious. I absolutely love their sweet potato fries, a highlight of the menu, and I highly recommend dipping them in their Cajun Ranch or Spicy Ranch sauce. But it's the service that really sets them apart. The staff is so warm, flexible, and easy-going. Despite going with extremely large groups of students each time, they have never messed up an order, missed a dish, or made us wait for an extensive period of time. I ordered a bowl of the avalanche chili which came out cold and looked like a bowl of meat sauce with a tablespoon of sour cream on top. There were no onions, cheese or peppers on it. I asked for it loaded when I ordered it. When I addressed it with our waiter Darin (sp ? No name tag on) he told me I did not order it correctly!! Then he told me he was the general manager and I made a mistake. I should have got up and left at that point. The food that followed was mediocre and cold. My son and I went there at 4:30 for a mother and son meal. It was not crowded. Very disappointed! Being locals, we will not go back there anytime soon. And for 'Darin' the General manager/waiter, he needs to take a course in customer service and how to conduct himself as a manager for an establishment.
