This is a regular stop on my pilgrimage to the local Amish greenhouses for my vegetable and flower plants. Bowers is famous for its hot pepper fest, but the hotel remains true to local Pennsylvania Dutch fare. It's quaint, historic and has the best homemade desserts. After our first meal there my partner asked if I was interested in dessert. I said, I was craving something coconut. He laughed and said they won't have anything like that. Well they had 3, coconut pie, coconut cake and coconut pudding which was delicious and more like cake. That sealed the deal for me, so here we are back again. I started with a cocktail which is rare for me. The Brandy Daisy was delightfully refreshing. I had the special grilled cheese. A spectacular creation starting with brioche, spread with pesto, layered with ham, bacon, cheddar, lettuce and tomato. I declined the egg which would have been too much for me. The house made chips were thick and crisp and seasoned really well. Partner had the schnitzel (I got his salad). The mashed potatoes were oddly brown. But quite delicious as was the veal, I had to taste both. We were fat and happy so we had to take dessert to go. Coconut walnut cake was moist and delicious packed with all the goodies. Buttercream iced 3 layer chocolate reminded me of my Pop Pop's. It was late, there were only 2 other tables so we had all the attention we needed. Starting to notice a growing disparity between cost and quality. This was a fine meal for the price, nearly equal to the one the night before which cost twice as much. f I ordered bacon blue cheese crumble burger MW. It is very well done. Black char on half burger(I know it's from pressing the burger on grill to cook faster). and the French fries look great! golden color in fact! Yet as soon as I took a bite, not cooked/fried all way. I would even go as far to say raw by 3/4. Not just 1 fry, all the ones I tried(to give benefit of doubt). My roll and pickle were perfect!! What's going on there?! The salads were good. The new owners have made changes to the qualify of food, which are not good ones. Risotto tasted like it was made with minute rice. The chicken I had was tasty. The carrots and string beans were only partially cooked. Three pieces of each. My boyfriend ordered a roast beef sandwich. It came with what tasted like Heinz jarred gravy. The mashed potatoes were instant potatoes and very heavily salted. The clams, which was the first item ordered, were forgotten. So they put in a rush order. Clams were large, overcooked and rubbery. He left with an uneasy feeling in his gut. Woke with indigestion in the middle of the night and needed Mylanta to feel better. We will not be returning any time soon. This has been a favorite of my wife and I for years, sadly the quality of the food has diminished. Evidently it's under new ownership, I would suggest to the new owners to focus on quality. Best of luck in the future, the bowers hotel deserves better. read more

My wife and I were regulars at Bowers Hotel, as the food, value and service were outstanding. We have been back 3 times after the restaurant changed hands and will never return. After ordering a simple meal consisting of a Rueben sandwich, Chicken Chili, French Onion Soup and Wings, we had to ask the server if everything was ok since we were waiting over 40 minutes without any acknowledgment while tables who came in after us finished their appetizers and were completing their main course. The wings were good, and the gentleman who served them apologized for the wait and said the kitchen was slammed. We asked for Ranch but got Blue Cheese, asked the server for Ranch but it never came. Didn't make sense but I was there for a positive time with my family so I let it go, after all, sometimes things happen. Now onto the meal. My chili was a bowl of pulled chicken with less than a quarter cup of almost lukewarm, tasteless, watery liquid. I think there was a bit of chopped pepper with maybe five beans. It was supposed to be topped with cheese and onion, neither of which was included. I didn't eat it but the leftovers will be put to good use. The Ruben was so soggy my wife could not pick it up. The French Onion soup was good. Made our concerns known to no avail. I'm the type that doesn't complain, eats what I'm given with a smile on my face, and just doesn't return. Tonight, in a rare moment of candor, I explained that it was one of the worst meals I've been served. I don't know what happened, but it seems no one is monitoring the food before it is delivered. At any rate, I hope our meal was the exception and not the rule. I wish them well, but won't return. read more

Food was terrible. Nachos were wet on bottom,cheese wasn't melted,no flavor,I could've made better with a bag of Doritos and shredded cheese. Took about 20 mins to get a beer after ordering it. Great old atmosphere with good enough food, the Bowers Hotel is worth a stop if you're in the area. Residing in an 1820s old stone inn, you can tell the Bowers Hotel will be a fun experience if nothing else. Taking advantage of a wine tour gift card, this was the lunch spot for the tour. The tour guide called ahead of our order, and we arrived a little after 12 on a Sunday. The bar was actually decently crowded with people watching football but the dining room was all but empty. Despite the two hour call ahead, we had to wait 20-30 minutes for our food to arrive. I'll give them some break since there was, including myself and my fiancée, 15 people on the bus, but they got a two hour heads up and there was still an extended wait? It was only somewhat crowded in the bar and empty in the rest of the restaurant. The food itself was pretty average, more bar fare then a gourmet meal. My fiancée ordered the Grilled Portabella ($7.95), with a grilled portabella mushroom, spinach, provolone cheese, roasted red peppers, tomato & pesto mayo served on a brioche roll, and I got the Crab Cake Panini ($10.95) on toast with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and tartar sauce. The portabella was fine but a bit watery when you bit into it - not the best I've ever had. The crab cake panini was not a panini - it was a mashed crab cake between two pieces of dry Texas Toast. Very disappointing. Overall, if you're looking for okay bar food at low prices, Bowers Hotel will fit the bill. Our experience was underwhelming - don't go out of your way to come here. read more

Went to Bowers hotel last night for dinner. I had the chicken marsala, and it was bad. The chicken was cut too thick and it was tough. Chicken marsala should be pounded so it's thin and very tender. The marsala sauce was over thickened, and just stuck to the chicken. Marsala wine sauce should be smooth and creamy not thick and sticky! Traditionally, chicken marsala is served with a side of pasta which also has the marsala sauce on it. I got no pasta. I got their Bahama Blend vegetable medley, which was a combination of broccoli, beans, carrots, and roasted red peppers all over-cooked and mushy, and not not even hot! The dinner rolls were dry and cold. We couldn't even get a warm dinner roll?? On top of my entree not being good, the service was slow. It's obvious there is no attention to detail in the kitchen at Bowers Hotel. We won't be back. read more

We've been here a couple times and had better expectations of the place. Both times were on a Saturday afternoon and we ate and drank in the bar. The first time the bartender was excellent and we just had some appetizers. Reasonable beer selection, good appetizers, friendly service, so far, so good. The second time was a total waste of time and money. The 'paninis' we ordered were the worst I've ever had. They consisted of limp roasted vegetables between two pieces of thick, plain, dry toast with raw tomatoes, unmelted cheese, and no trace of the pesto as listed. The whole thing just thrown under the broiler for two seconds. Worse yet was the service. The waitress/bartender totally missed my request for a beer and we noticed that she mucked up the order at the table next to us as well (not to mention that they were seated before us and their food came out well past ours). She was friendly but quite honestly, rather clueless. She grabbed my wife's glass off the table and refilled it without even asking if she wanted another all the while ignoring my wife's request for a different beverage. I was trying to be fair in justifying less than good service as there were a couple large parties in there at the same time. However, there was plenty of staff and the whole party at the bar was ordering a minimal food and leisurely drinks. They weren't being 'slammed' with service orders. After observing other patrons around us having the same experience of mixed up orders, lousy food, and poor service....there really was no excuse. We had hoped for better but won't be back for a long, long, time. read more

This has been out favorite place to eat for years now. I can't decide if the steak night is the best or the Sunday brunch. The prices on special days are off the hook cheap! Sunday brunch buffet with made to order omelette sand eggs benefit and house made desserts is only ....(are you sitting down?) $12.95! Steak night Thursday is NY strip or ribeye with two sides is....(still sitting?) $10.95! The regular menu is awesome. The Bowers punch from the bar signature drink is awesome. Where do I start?! Took 20 mins for someone to acknowledge that we were there after being sat. When we got our drinks and ordered our food that was pretty much the last time we saw our waitress. Apps were good the entrees were eh. My steak was suppose to be medium well and it was so red. At that point I didn't send it back cause I was so hungry waiting over 1.5 hours for our food. And again I never saw the waitress. Our drinks were empty the whole time, my wife decided to go to bar since we didn't see any employee and after 5 mins of waiting for the bartender to fill up our drinks she came back to the table and said no one was there. I'm always here once a year after Pepper Fest and I'm always bewildered by how ineffective this business is run. The only weekend that Bowers, PA actually gets tourists (thousands literally) and this only bar in Bowers!!! seems to staff like it's any other weekend. Now in my 10th straight year coming here to watch Penn St after the awesome pepper fest and once again I waited for over 20 minutes just to be acknowledged by the bartender (while seated). I'm a patient guy but for God's sake can you add a few bartenders for this weekend next year? Hopefully friendly ones? Maybe then I'll tip for once. Dined here Saturday evening because James Supra band was playing...a must see blues/rock band...so so good! Second visit to Bowers Hotel to see them. Had delicious prime rib dinner both times. This past weekend we had an excellent server. My meal came with Caesar salad and a baked potato. The salad was fresh, crisp, and the dressing was perfect. Dinner rolls were fresh and soft. The baked potato was small but tasty. The prime rib was cooked perfectly medium rare, the way I like it. The only thing off was the burgundy sauce with mushrooms on top. The sauce was gelatinous, almost cold, tasted like strong sherry or red wine jelly if you can imagine that. The mushrooms did not appear grilled, maybe canned? We both scraped our sauce off the steak onto a bread plate. The au jus served with it was delicious. I would recommend grilled mushrooms/onions for on top of the prime rib. That sauce should not be repeated...chef should try a different sauce like a mushroom/shallot/sherry/cream reduction, or keep it simple...the au jus and horseradish were enough. Also, steak knives should arrive with the meal. Great meal with awesome entertainment. Will be back whenever a good band is playing. read more

My husband and I were at Bowers for dinner and it was not a very positive experience. Seafood combo was just nasty, the "fish" tasted of celery seasoning and old bay. Our server was not very attentive, while the other server was very attentive to her customers. In fact there was two gentlemen that came in long after us and were served their bread, appetizers, and main course and we were just being served our appetizers. Very disappointed. It might seem petty but when you go out to lunch on a day when my wife and I are both off and you pick a bar that's been a choice when near by you get ignored at sitting at the bar. Sat there, female bartender comes in, doesn't acknowledge us goes back in the dining room. Thinking she saw a buddy and wanted to say hi I figured she be back in a minute so we waited decided what we're going to drink I'm like what is going on I go walk into the doorway the dining room and she standing there leaning up against the chair Jaw jacking. This review is for the Thanksgiving buffet: My family and I came here last year and had a delicious meal. There was a wide variety of salads on the cold table, a lot of choices for vegetables and sides, and real turkey, dark and white meat. We came back this year and it was a huge disappointment. There were slices of processed turkey. The cold table consisted of one pasta salad and lettuce and dressings. When we went through the buffet there were 3 rolls in the bread basket and very small portions of vegetables in the chafing dishes; there was a long line of people behind us. The cranberry sauce was more like a glaze you'd put on ham. Compared to last year, the desserts were almost non-existent...and what was there wasn't very good. I heard that the restaurant has a new chef. They should try to get the old one back. We will not be returning. read more

Not sure if we were there on a bad night but it was not very good. There were four of us and none of us enjoyed our meal. My husband got the rib eye steak on the menu and he said it was the worst he had ever had. The vegetable- sugar snap peas- were overdone, very mushy! And last but not least, we thought the wine prices were good until we saw the size of the glasses. They were really small and so you got very little wine for the price. Decent little place . I was actually in the mood to Go to an " older" restaurant since I like old place atmosphere. The bartender was attentive and friendly. First time I've ever walked out of a restaurant. Went there today to try someplace different. Walked in. Sign said "seat yourself" which we did, in the front dining room. Waited 15 minutes. No one came to our table. I'm a smoker and have a cough so I'm not exactly a quiet person. I got up, gave a quick look around, saw no one. Sat down. Saw one man walk through the hallway. He never looked our way. No wonder we were the only people in the dining rooms. (People were at the bar across the hall). I'm sorry but I shouldn't have to chase down a waiter/waitress. Tried bowers hotel after a long hiatus- I am so glad I did. New owners made a lot of improvements to menu and food. I so enjoyed my burger and my husband loved his roast beef sandwich. The chipotle BBQ wings were very good ( we considered the Thai suicide wings, the waitress was kind enough to let us taste the sauce first.... Lip numbing hot).
