I'm not even vegan, but I love this place! A lot of times I'm just grabbing an oat milk ice cream (great flavors and has hemp protein) or a chickpea salad that is always very fresh and vibrant with local greens and veggies. There are many other menu items to explore --I just haven't gotten around to it. I also go for the ambience and vibe. There are banana trees and other plants all around and always good music in the background. And the owner Sarah is always great --cheerful and making sure that you have a good experience! So for both food and atmosphere it's a five out of five. read more

I was traveling for work and needed to stock the refrigerator with vegan friendly food. Most places near Allentown were closed and I happily landed on Hive cafe. It was a tad difficult to locate but once I found it, I was impressed with the space, service and food. The Reuben ended up being my favorite burger. And I also devoured the vegan mac and cheese. Wow. Let me start by saying I am not a vegetarian but I love locally sourced fresh food. I heard about hive cafe through their hot sauce business and decided to give them a try. Being not familiar with Kutztown I wasn't sure where to park but I parked on the Main Street and cut through to the alley. The building is well marked and is adorable inside. I decided to go with a burger since I really enjoy veggie burgers. I ordered the one with mushrooms and blue cheese (local of course!) and had it served over greens. The burger itself was wonderful - great flavor, texture and with a nice char on it. Probably the best veggie burger I have had. You can tell that it was made from scratch and a lot of thought went into the recipe. The blue cheese and mushrooms were the perfect pairing - adding richness and tang. And finally the greens were so fresh. I realized I ate them all before I had finished the burger because they were so good! The oat milk soft serve was a nice end to the meal. I love ice cream so wasn't sure what to expect from this non-dairy version but o was pleasantly surprised by how creamy and flavorful it was. I'm glad I tried it and would definitely have it again. My husband and I absolutely loved their buffalo "wings"! It's a must try for sure. This restaurant serves organic food and roots their practice in sustainability. It was great to see the wooden utensils and compost system they have going on there. This place has the best vibe and nicest staff. The menu could have used a few more vegan options but what I had was good and came out quickly. The salad that came with my lunch was good, but the must store the dressing in the fridge because the evoo was solid. No need to refrigerate balsamic and evoo friends! The salad was colorful and fresh. Delicious beets! The grilled cheese was tasty and the bread was very fresh tasting. Overall, I need to go back and try their vegan cheesesteak next time! Also they had vegan treats from Bethlehem and I got the PB brownie and wow. That was amazing. Dint park in the lot directly across the front door or you will come out to your car with a note warning you that they will tow your car if you park there again. Recently ate here for the first time while visiting a loved one at Kutztown U. Tried to go last time I was up, but it was randomly closed for the weekend. This restaurant has a very cool interior but boutique hours and prices. My pumpkin latte wasn't great, but the food was decent. In conclusion, I liked this restaurant, but trying to find a time when it's open was a challenge and the food was just alright. I probably won't come here again, but I'm glad I got in here this one time. If you're vegan or vegetarian, this place definitely has the most variety in Kutztown. read more

Tucked away on a side street, open only two days a week, this place is a fabulous find for vegans (and of course vegetarians.) The food was delicious and the owners are incredibly nice. The space is rough hewn and very appealing. We had the pulled portobello sandwich, the Korean burger, and a special couscous. All were great. And so was the homemade vegan soft serve! read more

We stopped here on our way to Bethlehem. We ordered salmon tacos, the mushroom panini, and scrambled tofu for our children. My fiance also ordered the green hemp smoothie. The portions are medium size, if you are ordering the tacos, you'll definitely want a side. The atmosphere was great. They had eco friendly utensils and straws. My only complaint is that the ordering system could be more organzied. We were asked three times while eating whether an entree or salad was ours. Perhaps give order numbers a try? Ive never had any specific problems with the food here, but I have had issues with their hours time and again. From incorrectly posted hours halfway through quarantine to just generally not being open for late lunch/dinner or week days some weeks, i hear they're now only open on Friday and Saturday? I am not a city person at all... had to be in the area for a few days. I was staying in Wyomissing, I had gone to a couple of places for meals and they were absolutely terrible!! My husband and I are also fairly new to being vegan. I have been a vegetarian since I was young but we made the change a couple of months back, so we are still learning. I was very frustrated with the lack of vegan options and also the lack of any healthy food options altogether! I saw this place and it seemed worth the 30ish min drive, especially since I was starving! Oh my gosh, was it ever worth it!! The two ladies working there were so great too! After a short time it was just one girl by herself, she said they didn't schedule anyone to help her- but she kept her cool and still gave great service and she was very helpful in making suggestions. You can see the entire kitchen and see all the fresh ingredients they use. I ended up ordering the Hive burger, vegan, some kombucha, a smoothie, and I got a smoothie and lentil soup to go so I could have a healthy dinner back at the hotel! read more

Yelp says 2 stars is "Meh. I've experienced better." and that's exactly how I feel about Hive Cafe. Been two times. First time got "vegan" cheese-steak. Vegans beware, I have a very severe and sensitive allergy to dairy (milk), and a few bites of this gave me a slight reaction. What does this usually indicate? Cross contamination. What causes cross contamination? Disorganized and dirty kitchens. Go in and take a look at the "kitchen" yourself, at least it is open for all to see. Otherwise it tasted O.K. Also got the Kombucha. Honestly, amateur. So fizzy you can't even take a sip without your cheeks puffing up, and had little flavor. Second time got a "green" smoothie or whatever. That's all I got, one other person in the place, took almost 15 minutes to make. When I got it, all I could taste was grass, and it wasn't really a "smoothie" as it was all liquid and melted. More of a juice... Espresso is made from some very cheap consumer grade countertop $40 pressure forced machine. Good luck getting anything palatable out of that thing. Hope they don't put Four Monkey's coffee in it, would be an insult. Local produce section is a joke, like one maybe two vegetables, shelves mostly empty, fridge mostly empty with mislabeled products. Messy back area open for all to see, junk and unsold product everywhere. Put up a curtain or clean it up. Unless you're a die hard vegan or animal lover or something, just avoid the place. They're the only ones giving good reviews because its the only place like it in the area. 2/5 read more

Nice options for those who have many an allergy, or live a vegan lifestyle. Friendly staff and love how it is opened up in the spring-fall to allow nice air to come into the place. The few things that I do not like is the vegan cheese-stake lacks the vegan cheese (it feels like their isn't much), there is literal trash in the back like broken light covers (that space should be used for more seating, or at least cleaned up to look nice) and they are pretty pricy. I know vegan food is usually on the higher end of the price points, but they do charge quite a bit compared to other places I've been to for pretty OK food. Definitely worth checking it out, but only if your in town. read more

Great little spot I found thanks to you Yelpers! I had a phenomenal vegan cheesesteak, and a delicious green smoothie. Kids had pb&j and sunbutter & j sandwiches on artisan bread. The bread was so good I bought a loaf to take home, along with some of the amazing soap they sell (and use in the restrooms). The inside is nothing fancy, but it's clean and everything seems made from scratch. I love the vibe and wish there was a similar spot near home. I was only in town for the apple festival, but will definitely seek this spot out when I'm back again! read more

Just went here with my wife and son and it was so good I'm leaving a review in the parking lot. The counter girl was friendly and helpful and the food was absolutely delicious. I got the vegan cheesesteak and it hit the spot and was savory, sometimes meat substitutes are questionable but I jumped in with this place and I'm glad I did. My wife had the avocado tempeh toast and I had a bite and the tempeh was to die for. The bread was fantastic as well. It also was kid friendly which is an added bonus. read more

This is my first yelp review and I have decided to review Hive after my second visit. This adorable vegan cafe has amazing food and extremely friend staff members. I drove almost an hour just to try their vegan Mac n' Cheese again and it did not disappoint. I also tried their portobello & seitan "pulled pork" sandwich and it was probably one of the best (if not the best) vegan pulled pork sandwiches that I have ever had. What makes Hive stand out, aside from their delicious food, is their impeccable service. The staff really seems to be proud of what they have created, as well as their mission. My daughter and I went in there to check it out. Hot spot talk of "kutztown" (Since one of our favorite spot are CLOSED on Sundays). Love the simple decor. Ordered the Vegan Steak sandwich and Queen Bee smoothie. Vegan Steak sandwich was excellent, great flavor and had a nice spicy kick. Queen Bee smoothie was very flavorful and can't wait to try another one. Menu has good varitey. Nice to find a place with gluten free items and milk free substitutes. Customer services was great and very friendly. It's off the beaten path of the main drag but I prefer that. 5 stars plus! read more

I wanted to like it but i just couldn't. I went last month and the atmosphere is really not suitable for winter. Not cozy at all, and chilly. I ordered a salad with salmon and the salmon was cold which I was not expecting. It had huge chunks of carrots in it that had not been peeled. Just overall not well executed. My friend ordered a sandwich which was absolutely tiny and not conducive to serve as a meal. Also they have no decaf coffee. read more

It's always hard going somewhere and having a level of expectation. Robin the owner has been extremely instrumental in the Farm to Table Berks County environment. No question she has chops on the farm. To be fair prior to writing this review I visited three times. All three of my visits the restaurant was empty. On one occasion another person walked in but they will never busy. There is only one person and they are behind the counter. The menu while creative is extremely bland. Food presentation is good but price is extremely high and portions are small. Avocado toast looks like avocado toast but tastes like nothing. The salads are fresh but limited. This place suffers from lack of restaurant knowledge and no restaurant experience. In the business you need a front of the house person and back of the house person to be successful. Some people pull off both but they need to be present. Conceptualizing designing and all the other stuff that goes on behind the scene does not translate at the point of sale. That's the problem with the hive, this is simply not a good restaurant. They may have great pedigree they may have great knowledge but they really can't execute. I am very generous with my review I honestly feel they should get zero Stars. Robin is legit, but the hive isn't. They need to hire real restaurant people or partner up with them which would be my first choice. Like I said I really wanted to like this place. Empty shelves are not appealing. read more

First time there and I left within 5 min. #1 they have an electrical extension cord right at the steps, where a railing should be, so my kid tried to grab it to walk up the stairs. #2 they have a limited menu, and there wasn't anything my kid would eat. #3 no one bothered to say hello or even offer to take an order. How long am I supposed to stand there with a menu at the register? So I left. And my kid fell down the steps on the way out, which are dangerous. My fiancé and I just discovered HIVE based on a recommendation from a friend who we were visiting in Kutztown. I wish this place had been around while I still attended KU because I definitely would visit frequently if I was still in town as often as I used to be. The people working there were all very friendly and I love that the food is organic and locally sourced. My fiancé and I have recently transitioned to a vegan diet and HIVE had a lot of good options for us to choose from. My fiancé went with their weekend brunch tofu scramble with home fries and I ordered the vegan cheese steak. The vegan cheese steak was great; I actually prefer it to regular cheese steaks I've had in the past. I definitely plan on coming back at some point just to have this again because it was so good. We also got smoothies which were super refreshing. It was a bit pricey, but worth it for the quality of the food. I would recommend HIVE to anyone looking for a healthy place to eat in Kutztown. read more
