If you remember this restaurant from a decade or so ago, don't disappoint yourself by coming for a meal. The outside ambiance is still great for a glass of wine or late night snack, but the service is terrible now and the quality of the food has gone way downhill. We lived in Paris near here for a year, and came here often. We were never disappointed. But on visits last year and this - worst of all this year, I felt like someone who had to be told to stop hitting my head with a brick. On my visit earlier this week, the sour old waiter outside seemed to take pleasure in telling me that there was no more "plat du jour," "soupe du jour," or "poisson du jour." (and it was only about 8:15 pm). Then, rather than inquire about my drink order or leave me some time to consider alternatives from the menu, he stood right on top of me as if to hurry me into a decision. Now, that is really bad form, even at a tourist cafe. I told him I would like some time to "reflechir" and he bugged off, but I was really annoyed. Finally had a small pichet of Sancerre and a quiche. The quiche was ok, but a bit greasy. The mixed salad that came with it was very nice (with endive and a light dressing). So ok, poor service but ok food and a nice respite near the heat lamp. Tonight I went back with my 20 year old daughter. We went around 7:00 to be sure they would still have one of the dinner specials. We were seated inside, which is a bit noisy but very atmospheric. The writing on the chalkboard was tiny and illegible, so we asked the waiter about the specials. Apparently there was only one: a veal with mushroom sauce and potatoes, which we both ordered, again feeling a bit rushed about making a selection. I started with a bowl of vegetable soup, which was enormous, but fairly tasteless - like unsalted carrots mainly. Only about a minute after taking away my soup bowl, the waiter plunked down our main courses, which sure looked like boeuf bourgignon, rather than a veal special. I did not want to question it, so we started eating, and it was definitely beef - not all that well made, rather dry and some pieces too chewy. Mainly tasteless, and served with some pathetic dry pasta on the side that must have been pulled out of the trash at a local Italian restaurant. I was really disappointed that the dish was so bad and that the waiter chose to make this substitution without saying anything, figuring that because we were dumb Americans, we would not know the difference (we were only charged for the special, and not the boeuf bourgignon, but big deal, I would rather have had something edible). The waiter did not say anything when he came to clear our plates and my food was only half eaten and my daughter's only a third eaten. I guess he was happy to give some to his dog, because he should have known it was not fit for humans. We had been planning to stay awhile and enjoy dessert, but this was all so off putting, we just asked for the check and left. Beware!! read more
