I'm giving 5 stars because I've been searching for a place that makes chow mien the traditional way I remember... with no noodles...bean sprouts, water chestnuts, celery, carrots, mushrooms and chicken (or pork). A friend invited me to lunch at this restaurant. We have both been to Chine and I and my wife also enjoy good American style Chinese food. The service was very slow and I think the server used to work in a prison cafeteria. The food was a bit bland and when my lunch partner asked for chop sticks they were never delivered. Lees is one of those places you don't find very often.... it seems more like a shady bar than a top notch Chinnese place, but trust me they deliver the goods. Probably 20 people from the office have gone to lees kitchen with me and to date I haven't had a single complaint. They server perfect lunch portions, the hot and sour soup is top 3 ive tasted and they have hands down one of the best Kung Pow chicken dishes in portland. Best customer service by owner I've ever experienced. Craving Chinese food I placed an order by phone. My husband went to pick up. It's 12:50am and our US Bank debit account is not approving any charges due to the system down for maintenance. How frustrating!! Without any cash on hand and only carrying the debit card he leaves disappointed and leaves the front desk staff frustrated too. He gets in the car and the owner Mr. Lee knocks on his window in the rain to give him the food for free. My husband thanks and hugs him and promises to return with payment tomorrow. This place is seriously a family staple. I left the nest, but I think my family still eats here at least once a week (and they live in Vancouver now!!!). That's dedication. I am a veggie now, but they have excellent sesame chicken (my dad and brother fight over any leftovers), and other than that, pretty much the usual greasy Chinese fare. We like lees kitchen and go there often but today The service was horrible. Our waitress never once came by to refill our water or asked how things were. When our food came she dropped our food off and ran before we could ask for anything else. We had dirty cups on her table. The place wasn't that busy. This is not your cookie cutter Chinese restaurant where everything tastes the same. I went to Lee's Kitchen while in Tualatin, and I really liked this place. It had good service, really tasty food, and the waitresses were really nice. I had the Luncheon Special for $6.00, and it came with one good sized entree, rice, two fried wontons, and egg flower soup. Everything was delicious and very inexpensive for it's quality and quantity. The waitress was always coming by, refilling our water, and asking how we were. I reccomend. read more

Like deep fried everything? Well, Lee's is the place for you. Its the magical combination of standard greasy Chinese and the Minnesota state fair. Three stars for the friendly waitstaff who had to put up with me, and a clean, well decorated interior. I would give it one star for the food, which was almost unpalatable. I suggest you ask specifically what items are deep fried-- the sweet and sour pork, chicken and duck are all deep fried, for example. The egg rolls are deep fried, even though there's clearly an already fried, crispy egg roll inside the dough. The pork fried rice was the laziest I've seen in my life-- overdone rice, and the pork pieces were literally dumped on the side, rather than mixed in. My friend and I had different amounts of soup in our appetizer bowls-- mine was served almost overflowing. Finally, the fry batter they love so much is the kind that tastes weirdly musty. I stopped in to pick up lunch. The soup has more cornstarch in it than I think I've ever seen in a soup, and I'm still trying to find the sour in the hot and sour. The lunch special is plentiful, so if you just want a lot of food, you'll be happy, but if you want it to taste good and not get an MSG buzz, then you're out of luck. The egg roll wrapper is as thick as a bad pie crust, and the filling lacked flavor. The chicken dish was appropriately spicy but didn't taste like anything in particular. Lots of fried rice--as in fried rice, no veggies in it. I won't be going back to this place. Update 5 minutes later: I don't know how much MSG they use, but my heart rate is racing. Be wary. If you want the best Americanized Chinese food in town, go here. Yes there are many like this place in the Metro area but Lee's kitchen does it best. I love REAL Chinese food too but this isn't that kind of place. In my mind there are two different classes of Chinese restaurant: One for Chinese people & the other for American people. Chinese American has become its own kind of cuisine and you must understand that when you go to a place like this. I have been eating here since I was a kid. I have rarely seen any actual Chinese people there, unless they were working there or I brought them with me. But I grew up loving this place and have even taken some of my Chinese friends there, and they can appreciate it too because they know what to expect. The sesame chicken is the best I've ever had. Since my childhood I have stopped eating meat but the sesame chicken is definitely one of my cheat foods. Yeah it's probably ALL loaded with MSG but so are American American restaurant foods.
