A heaping bowl of broth with meat and vegetables and noodles and a plate of fresh basil/cilantro and sprouts - as well as a half banh mi (about 6") - for under $10. My kids didn't love the beef broth, although I did, particularly with the chili sauce that comes on the table. But my kids adored the banh mi. French bread that is as light as a feather, crunchy vegetables, good meat, the tangy mayonnaise - plus a slice of hot jalapeno in the bottom of the basket. Delicious. Holy shiiii. This place is amazing. I will forever compare other banh mis to Lee's. Ah, the beautiful banh mi. A friend was on her way over and asked if I would like for her to bring over a couple extra banh mis they had picked up from Lees. Sure! She brought them over and we left them sitting on the kitchen counter while we caught up for a few hours on a lazy Sunday. She left, and dinnertime rolled around. My husband and I didn't reheat them. We didn't do anything but unwrap them, plate them and then happily stuff them into our pie holes. Look, if a sandwich can taste THIS GOOD after sitting around for a few hours it was absolutely worth checking out the establishment itself. I was impressed with the crusty bread alone - soft, with just enough give and a slight crunch. I mean, I can sit here and try to describe it but it won't do any justice. Just know that their bread is the bread they serve in heaven. Legit. The flavors were mesmerizing. I, for one, hate carrots. They have to be cooked a certain way or I can't stomach the smell. Weirdo, I know. But! I barely noticed the pickled carrots on the sandwich and not because they weren't worthy but because the flavor melded so nicely with the other pickled veggies, the bread and the chicken, that it wasn't until I was halfway through that I realized I'd been eating all those carrots. We were hooked. A week later, on a Saturday afternoon, we made the trek to the restaurant. It was fairly busy for the middle of the day. We got two combos: full banh mis, one chicken and one pork, and one beef pho and one seafood pho. No complaints! The flavors, the textures, the crunch and the soft bread... it really is a party for your mouth. We shamelessly stuffed those sandwiches down before they barely saw the light of day. The pork banh mi was incredible. The pork was like nothing I've had before, full of flavor, tender and a little crispy all at once. And the combo pho could be a single meal in itself. It's a pretty decent size! It was delicious and I enjoyed my leftovers later that night. I also had a Thai tea with boba and I loved their boba. Soft, sweet. My new favorite place to get them. I wish they didn't serve it with ice, though. It makes it hard to get the boba up through your straw when you near the end and I don't know about you but I'm not about to let any of those puppies go to waste. Next time I'll request no ice. It took a long while to be acknowledged, the waiter forgot my Thai tea order and we had to finally ask about it, and the sandwiches came out waaay before the soup did so we sat there for a little bit sadly gazing at our empty tabletops. FOOD & DRINK Word on the (Yelp) streetz is that Lee's has the best Vietnamese baguettes (Viet's use rice flour) in the city and they supply them to other restaurants in the area. Thus, I visited and ordered two days worth of this deliciousness because I don't want to cook this week. My banh mi harvest comprised of three thit nuong (Vietnamese grilled pork) and three gio thu (Vietnamese head cheese). I also had their café sua da (Vietnamese coffee) and sipped on it while I waited. Note: If you're reading this review and can tell me how many times I dropped the word "Vietnamese," I may give you a prize. Note #2: All of their to-go banh mis have the pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, cucumber, and jalapeños in separate bags. One must order a minimum of three banh mis, too. (Maybe because of a credit card minimum of $10?) *Banh Mi Thit Nuong: Good God! That is some ridiculously tasty marinade they got, and the mayo and pate were perfect. However, I think their pickled and julienned daikon and carrot slices could've been a bit more tangy, and the bread -- although pillow-y -- could have been more crunchy. SERVICE I went during lunch hour, so I did expect a wait; however, I didn't expect a 15+ minute wait. Even people that put in orders ahead of time and got there late had to wait, but it was definitely worth it. I wouldn't come here if you're in a rush. III. ATMOSPHERE/ DÉCOR Well, it's definitely not like a first-date kind of place. It's more like if-you've-been-dating-for-a-hot-minute-come-here-to-see-if-she's-down kind of place. That's coded for "it needs a few updates." But hey, it doesn't really matter all too much to me. This isn't a high-end steakhouse, there's no putrid smell, and it looks clean enough. Personally I'm more than willing to sit on a plastic chair in some dank alley, for a good meal. I've done it many times, too. IV. PRICES $3 for a banh mi. It's not the cheapest, but it's of considerably higher quality than others I've had. Worthy of the price, PHO SHO. V. OVERALL I'm not sure how their non-banh mi foods taste, but if I ate them they would not factor into my overall rating. A person eats at or gets takeout from Lee's for banh mi. It's like if you checked out El Farolito in San Francisco -- one of the most famous burrito places in the US -- and ordered tamales. WHY?! Ya just don't do it. Pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, fresh jalapenos, pork, and paté. All served on a crispy baguette that sheds shards of crust like leaves in fall. The bread is what makes it and however these folks go about creating such loaves is beyond my comprehension. It's pure magic. The pho was pretty darn good, too. My wife had the veggie pho and it was great. I love that you can buy the baguette at the front, too. Can't remember the price per loaf, but I remember it being really, really cheap. Maybe $0.75 per? Three bites into my pho, I noticed the bug floating in the broth. Need I say more? Now you're probably thinking...oh, it's probably one of those bugs from a side of veggies that comes with the pho. I literally put no more than 6 bean sprouts in my bowl so while that is a possibility, I highly doubt it. I dined here with a group of 8 for a quick Sunday lunch. This place was too packed for its own good. There was no organization to the layout, customers were coming in and standing there, waiting and confused. When I arrived, there were too many empty tables strewn with dirty dishes. Clearly this place does not believe in pre-bussing. Customer service is pretty poor even for an Asian restaurant. Some of our friends arrived later and sat there with no menus and even after flagging down someone to bring a couple of menus, we waited forever again to order. At the end of the meal, paying the bill and asking for a couple of takeout boxes was also a feat. Someone at our table ordered an additional banh mi and it never came. The food is not that great here. I noticed all these people ordering pho and I kept wondering to myself why they don't just drive across the street to go to Pho Dai Loi or something. Had to revise my review due to the extremely unfriendly manner in which I was just spoken to. It appears a sign has been placed at the register now stating a $10 minimum on credit card purchases. I informed her this was my 3rd trip here & I ordered the pho/sandwich combo all 3 times that totals around $8. Was never told there was a minimum purchase requirement. The manager/owner, I'm assuming, points this sign and says "$10 minimum." I don't have cash on me and I have paid with my debit card each time for the same meal under $10 here. This place has so many positive reviews that I am wondering if something went terribly wrong with our order. We ordered the Vegetable Egg Rolls, Lemongrass Tofu Vermicelli, and an XL Pho. The Egg Rolls are served with Hoisin sauce which I find really weird and not good. Thankfully we had a more traditional dipping sauce at our house that we were able to use. The Tofu Vermicelli was okay but the tofu was overcooked and chewy and even when all mixed together it was pretty bland and underwhelming. What was most shocking was the Pho! It had absolutely NO flavor! Even after adding multiple different sauces there was no way to fix this terrible mistake. I have visited in the past to try out their banh mi. I've done both chicken and pork and I can't say I have a favorite. I think they are both pretty solid. On this most recent visit, I tried the fried rice and beef. I don't know if you can get it with white rice (which I would have preferred). I didn't to ask until I had already ordered. I also ordered the veggie (since this was recommended by the waiter over the pork) egg rolls. The food was served up in a reasonable manner. The egg rolls were meh- I shoulda tried the pork. The fried rice and beef was pretty decent. Pretty much it is shaking beef - comes with the same salt, pepper, and lime. I have had better elsewhere, but the meat was very juicy. So that was great. The portion size was very fair. Service was horrible. We were pretty much ignored after we got our food. Had to ask for refill after our glasses had been sitting empty for a while. He looked disappointed as soon as they put the plates down. It would have been slightly better if they cut the bread for you when it's "assemble yourself" or at least bring a knife.. The meat just looks like pho meat basically but that's no biggie! He was totally weirded out by the whole experience.. The #5 combo came with pho and it was decent. I wasn't a fan of the meat whatsoever and it had a bit of a gamey flavor. Not the best. The seating area wasn't kept clean and the condiment bottles had gunk on them and looked as if they'd never been changed...Kind of a turn off... My favorite spot in Atlanta for Vietnamese sandwiches (granted that I only know of Lee's and Quoc Huong). The bread is nice and soft and they provide a generous amount of meat and veggies in their sandwiches. My favorite is the grilled pork followed (not very closely) by the grilled chicken. They will put the veggies on the side for you when you order to go. This is a good idea if you're not eating the sandwich right away because it prevents it from getting soggy. Its a Yelp favorite, and now I'm upset with myself that I didn't attend the UYE that was held here a few months ago. I've been missing out. I went in around 3:30pm on a Tuesday and the place was a ghost town. The shrimp spring rolls had wilted lettuce in them, but were good just the same. Im not a big fan of lettuce either way, so I pulled out the brown parts and ate it with the sauce that comes with. There are some people in my office that eat here like 3 times a week. Yes, its cheap and filling, but IMO, its nothing I want 3 times a week. I also went with the chicken Banh-Mi, that bread could prove to be addictive. Again, a reason not to eat here three times a week. The jalapeno peppers on the Banh-Mi were a great touch of spicy. There's a small ladling of sauce, and you eat it all up after mixing it. Things I ate were: -combination egg noodle, dry with pho soup on the side -ngoi cuon (spring rolls) --------- Spring rolls PROS -fills you up CONS -mostly noodle and lettuce. This is definitely a filler roll. I'd have to say that Pho Dai Loi has the best rolls ever. --------- Combination egg noodle with pho soup on the side PROS -good quantity: Lee's may be slightly more expensive but you get full and satisfied. Shareable if you get an appetizer. -good flavors: egg noodles soak up the sauce really well. It isn't too sweet or too salty. that quail egg is a nice touch. It's like a little hidden gem -healthy: lots of vegetables but lots of meat as well -well balanced: I'd say between the starch (noodles), the meat, the variety, and the vegetables, this combination is why this is my favorite thing to order on the menu -soup on the side: it's perfect even for a cold day because of that side of soup! Having heard nothing but praise for Lee's, my expectations were pretty high. We visited on a whim on a Saturday afternoon and while there were plenty of people in the restaurant (and making to-go orders), we sat down and placed our orders within 10 minutes of arriving. I decided to go for the half banh mi and pho combo, choosing to ignore the fact that it was almost 90 degrees outside, because pho is just perfect any day of the year. The banh mi came first - a balanced combination of sweet/savory pork, fresh herbs, pickled crunchy vegetables, and the much lauded baguette. Was it delicious? Yes. Was it life-changing like it's been described to me by every Buford Hwy foodie in Atlanta? Hard to say. Don't get me wrong, it was an excellent banh mi - nothing in it was wrong, the baguette stood out for being crunchy without being hard enough to almost break a tooth (which has been a problem in some other restaurants). The pork wasn't overly sweet, the veggies were fresh and not limp from bad pickling, and the herbs weren't overpowering. The price of course, can't be argued with. I don't remember the last time I had something that good for less that $4. The pho was unexpectedly delicious. I'd never heard much about it at Lee's, but the broth was perfect enough by itself without the addition of any sauce and I appreciate that they offer it as a combo option and don't make me pick banh mi over pho. Just discovered this little gem a few weeks ago. Yes, it is a hole in the wall. If you have many leather-bound books and your apartment smells of rich mahogany, then this place might not be for you. We decided to dine in. Our window seat offered a breathtaking view of the Chevron next door. Service rivaled that of the Four Season's Park 75. Just kidding, we all know how the service is at most Asian places. This was no different. Sis and I needed a place to eat and chill after a nationwide road trip while waiting to check into our hotel and found this spot by chance after reading a review mentioning that Lee's Bakery was highly regarded by a reputable news source. Chicken banh mi -- Immediately after finishing half the sandwich I contemplated taking advantage of their buy 5 get 1 free deal to-go. The bread was baked to perfection, tasting fresh with an excellent blend of warmth, crispiness, and softness. The shredded chicken was moist and seemed to melt with each bite. I was going to take the second half to-go because I was also eating bun bo hue, but the sandwich was so fantastic I ate it all. Bun bo hue -- The broth was mindblastingly flavorful.
