Be Banh Mi is an eatery that serves various banh mis! The inside is a bit small but there are tables and chairs for people to sit and dine. It was quiet when I went so that made service quick. I got the Crispy Pork Belly Banh Mi, which is something I have been looking for in Atlanta. I really enjoyed it! The pork belly was actually crispy and filling, and paired well with the baguette. I wish I had more of the pickled carrots and tasted (more?) pate, but it was still a good sandwich! While it's not as cheap as our usual go to banh mi place, I'm glad that we stopped by and tried it out! Order at the counter & they make the sandwich on the spot for you. There's some seating available if you wanted to stay with some condiments at the front counter for you to use like sriracha. We got the grilled pork banh mi for ~$6 and it came pretty loaded with the pork which was nice. Their pate and butter were excellent, really enjoyed how buttery the sandwich was personally but I know some people would prefer just a hint of it. Yum... the day prior we got banh mi from somewhere forgot the name but it was seriously lacking. We did a google search of our area and came here in the morning around 9am. The bread was crisp and warm, vegetables fresh and flavor was very good. I decided to be a fatads and I got a 2 stick style sandwiches, one was combo, the other grilled pork. Grilled pork you can definitely taste the lemongrass on there and for combo, I was expecting only cold cuts but it came with pork floss too. The food here is just okay. I'm not a super big fan of the type of bread they use here. The salted coffee is fantastic though. Not a lot of Vietnamese places in the United States have salted iced coffee even though it's super popular in Vietnam. The service is sometimes good and sometimes bad. Each sandwich is about $7-8 without tip, and I would splurge occasionally to obtain a "fusion dish" between different cultures of this sandwich. There are other shops, though, that make a traditional banh mi better and are just as flavorful for a third of the price here. Service was subpar. The guy who took my order November 22 around 10:30 am seemed less than enthused to take my order. He also kept asking me if I was done ordering after each item I ordered. When I asked for the salted iced coffee, he coldly replied that there wasn't any. My cousin and I sat down while our sandwiches were being made and ate at the venue. It is a small sandwich shop with enough chairs and tables for a few small parties to fit in. I felt very unwelcomed and slightly unnerved as both of the employees loomed by our table and watched us eat. This unfortunately makes me reduce the quality of this review down a star. This isn't a place I would really sit down and eat. It's a small space. The food is amazing though. I've ordered take out here about 10 times already. The service is quick and the staff is communicative. I've tried every banh mi on the menu and I haven't been disappointed. My favorites are the classic and the tofu! I get everything on in. The number one question I get asked about Be Banh Mi is: "How does it compare to Quoc Huong and Lee's Bakery?" As of right now, my short answer is it's not as good, *but* it's still good and worth checking out. So come try this place and see for yourself. Be Banh Mi is still fairly new. It opened July 1, 2020. At the time of writing this review, their Facebook page still shows the business in soft open mode. During our visit, the menu was limited and said, "Temporary" and "More Coming Soon." Quoc Huong and Lee's Bakery have operated as well-oiled cash cows for many years now. Be Banh Mi is still trying to get on its feet and find its bearings. I am a fan of this place, but Atlanta has several good banh mi shops I'd currently put in front. In order, they'd be Huy's Sandwich in Norcross (my favorite), Lee's Bakery and Quoc Huong (these two are always jockeying for position in my book), and Viet Tofu. All of these places make a yummy banh mi and at the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference on certain subtleties. Compared to the aforementioned competition which are no-frills, Be Banh Mi breaks the mold by looking more updated and hip. It kind of looks like an American fast-casual chain restaurant, almost like Which Wich with its modern storefront sign, graphics, and branding. The color scheme is yellow, white, and black. The look is consistent, from the wall art to the furniture to the employee's uniforms (bright yellow T-shirts and black hats, both logoed) to the content on their Instagram page (@bebanhmi2020). It may look like a chain, but I don't believe it is, at least not yet. You can find Be Banh Mi in the same two-story strip as Tea House Formosa and Yen Jing Chinese Restaurant (it's sandwiched between, no pun intended) on Buford Highway. There's ample parking. Like other banh mi shops, this place is small and more of a takeout joint. Inside, there's bench seating along the wall with four small two-tops, each with a chair opposite (four chairs total) plus four stools next to the counter against the storefront windows. That works out to a comfortable seating capacity of 12 people though you can squeeze more folks in on the bench. There is no outdoor seating. During my visit around 1:30 PM over the weekend, it was a zoo. I ordered five sandwiches and was told there would be a 30-minute wait. I placed my order, left and came back, and numerous brown bags were packed with orders like mine ready for pickup. Business has been good for Be Banh Mi. My friends have experienced similar wait times, so keep that in mind. They had a small army working feverishly during my visit too. I tried four of the six sandwiches offered, all regular size: #1. The Classic (Dac Biet, $5.46) - Vietnamese pork sausage, jambon (ham), cured pork, char siu, pate, and pork floss #2. BE Grill Pork (Thit Nuong, $5.39) - house special marinade grill pork (same thing as char siu above) #4. Glazed Chicken (Ga Chien Nuoc Mam, $5.36) - fish sauce glazed chicken #5. Pork Meatball (Xiu Mai, $5.27) - pork meatball, roasted; peanut, Vietnamese coriander (rau ram) The two sandwiches I didn't try were the #3 Teriyaki Chicken and the #6 Black Bean Tofu (vegetarian option). All of Be Banh Mi's sandwiches come with egg butter, shredded pickled daikon and carrot, cucumber, cilantro, scallion, and "sauce." In addition to regular size, Be Banh Mi offers a smaller, cheaper "stick" size (about $4), and a big "challenger" size (not available yet). Overall, all of the sandwiches were delicious. We gobbled everything up. In general, the ingredients were fresh and good quality. That included the bread, meat, and veggies. The taste was more sweet than the savory I'm used to. While the sandwiches were filling and satisfying, they were lacking in meat. I did appreciate all the veggies, though. The staff could have been more careful when assembling the sandwiches (more on that below). I doubled up on the #1 Classic because Dac Biet is my favorite kind of banh mi. It's basically a "special combination" banh mi or a banh mi with "everything" and I recommend it. I prefer it over the simpler #2 BE Grill Pork because it comes with more meats. The pate in Be Banh Mi's Dac Biet wasn't evenly distributed in the sandwiches I ordered so there wasn't pate in every bite. While not a big deal, it's little things like that that can be improved upon. The #4 Glazed Chicken was surprisingly tasty. The way they served the chicken was not what I expected. The chicken was cut into small pieces and it tasted like it was fried with a batter on it. The meat was soft, tender, moist, and flavorful. I'd order it again. As for the #5 Pork Meatball, it was good too. The meatball was more like a smashed meatball. Like the chicken, it was soft, tender, and moist, but more mild in flavor. I visited early in the morning, around 10am, and although I wanted to try both chicken options, they did not have chicken available, so I was only down to two options: classic and grilled pork. I see that they've since updated their menu to include a fifth option, pork meatball. I decided to try both the regular and stick size banh mi, if only with two variations of sandwiches. The first thing you'll probably notice is the price of the sandwiches - around $4 for a stick and close to $5.50 for a regular banh mi. Down the Buford Highway corridor where the Kings of banh mi live, you can enjoy a regular sized banh mi for around half the price and most run specials where if you purchase 5 sandwiches, they'll give you a complimentary 6th sandwich. From a price standpoint, Be Banh Mi went in very ambitiously. Let's talk about the sandwiches themselves. They're very, very delicious! Ingredients were fresh, vegetables were crunchy, bread was tasty. Both variety of sandwich I've tried were packed with flavor from the meat and the additional sauces. We tried both the regular and stick size today. Stick size took us by surprise as it is literally a size of a fat cuban cigar. Surprisingly, the proportion of bread to the meat/filling actually works and was actually good but at the same time, the size can be debatable that i do think they should have the sizing on display. For filling, we tried both the classic and the teriyaki chicken. We definitely preferred the classic over the latter. Overall, will try again. Came from out of town to try this banh mi because my aunt's boss said it was really good. She wasn't wrong and I was not disappointed. Walking in we were greeted by the workers and got to looking around at the menu. They are known for having "stick" banh mi which is like a baguette that's skinner and more long. I think it's the perfect balance. We ordered the number 1 stick (the classic/ dac biet) number 2 (grilled pork/thit nuong) stick and regular and number 3 (teriyaki chicken/ ga sot nhat) stick. All veggies on the side because we were visiting from out of town and wanted to keep the bread as fresh as possible. I honestly enjoyed all of them. The meats were well seasoned and flavorful. Pickled veggies added nice acidity and fresh crunch. Mixed with the stick bread, it was a perfect match. It is smaller than your average bread so I could easily eat two if I am hungry. I finally got to try Be Banh Mi and glad I did. I will definitely be back. The interior is bright and inviting. We tried the stick teriyaki chicken and the regular pork bahnmi. So first, I need to give a big shoutout to the baguette they make here. It is so damn good. Seriously. I hope it's true that they make their own bread because it's legit. I'm super picky on my bread and I'm not normally a fan of sandwiches or subs but golly... Be Banhmi's bread is fresh, tasty, and just the perfect texture with each bite. All bahnmis are made to order so be patient. They give a generous protein filling in the regular bahnmi which I appreciated. I found the veggies and pickled veggies they use to be fresh and good. I wish I had more of the veggies. The stick bahnmi worked. There's not much protein filling in it but I guess that's understandable considering how small the baguette is for that one. I've never seen a baguette that thin/small. Sort of reminded me of a thick breadstick. I also tried their iced Vietnamese coffee and it was legit. It had a bit too much ice for me but it had a really good flavor. I would definitely order this drink again. I can't wait to go back for my next visit. Small banh mi restaurant loaded on Buford Hwy. It can be easy to miss since it is located in a 2 story shopping center amongst various other restaurants. When we went, the staff seemed in the middle of lunch so it felt like we caught them at a wrong time. Most of the staff is very young but one greeted us and 2 came to the counter to help. The menu is somewhat limited, at the time, it only allowed for takeout and you cannot enter without a mask but they will give you one at no charge. The place is also small but has a younger crowd modern feel in comparison to other sandwich shops I've been to. I feel bad not knowing the name but they have their normal size sandwiches and these small, slim baguette sandwiches which are great if you don't want a full size. I ordered the tofu and pork one and to be honest, the pork was not my favorite. It was hard and salty but the tofu one was heavenly. My friend was not a fan at all and felt the bread was too hard. My brother stated they were just ok and he preferred the OG's in banh mi's . I didn't hate it, I would definitely return for the tofu. read more
