It's not often in this age of corporate America to find a small business that checks all the right boxes, but I've found Leather Menders to be in that rare category. I just had Paul and his crew re-spring the seat in my cherished '59 Jaguar, and as well they repaired two nickel-sized holes in the vinyl upholstery that had rubbed through. Honestly, I had assumed that entire panel would have to be replaced, but Paul assured me he could repair the existing holes. When I returned for the car, I was pleasantly astounded at the results.. I was told about Leather Menders by a staffer at my local auto body shop, Ellis & Salazar in Northwest Austin. I needed a shift boot (the leather cover on a stick shift on my car) replaced, and the bottom track fixed so it would stay in place. Not too many repair shops in town would take on such an odd job, but Leather Menders did, at a fair price with friendly service. Following a recommendation from Finish Line Car Wash in Westlake I took my Lexus SUV to Leather Menders for a quote to repair the interior leather. I wanted it rejuvenated, repair of stains and scratches my dog had left, and to remove a very large stain where tea or coffee had been spilled. The quote Paul gave me was reasonable yet I believed that it would be wishful thinking to hope that even 50% of my list could be achieved. When I picked up my car yesterday I was speechless. The leather looks just as it did when it left the showroom. My car is a 2010 and I plan to sell it. I assure you that the value will be increased by 1k easily. Very nIce people who probably do a great job on leather repairs.... not so much for upholstering my RV furniture. I have to look at it every day and regret spending that $7500. It was a nightmare from beginning to end and by the time they were finished, we already knew from the pics that it was an epic fail. They even admitted that it was and tried to make it look better but the stuff needs to be completely redone. We just picked it up with a sick feeling in our stomachs and decided to get it redone at some point. $7500 down the drain. About 2 years ago I had a detailer get overly aggressive on my Acura's leather perforated seats, leaving a huge gash in the passenger side. I'd brought the car to multiple leather upholsterers in Austin but each time felt like I was being treated as if I were stupid ($1000 for front seat panels only, it'd take a week, etc.). Not so with Paul and Tammy at Leather Menders. The previous owner of my Mercedes ML63 AMG had glued a device to the leather dash and left an ugly blemish on the otherwise perfect car. A moving company scratched my footboard and they took it to Leather Menders for repair. When they went to pick it up, they noticed a scratch that was still there (so they didn't even fix it all in the first place) and asked them to repair it. The owner called me when it was ready again and said he was going to "throw it in the back of the truck" and be at my place to deliver it in 15 mins. I thought that was just a figure of speech, but these scratches were on it when he dropped it off. He set it up against the edge of the bed, where I left it untouched until a few hours later when I went to attach it back to the rest of the bedframe. I stupidly assumed they did a quality job and didn't look it over when he was there because I was on a business call. I shouldn't have assumed that since they hadn't even fully repaired it when the woman from the moving company went to pick it up. They didn't even wrap the footboard part to protect from the back of his truck or anything else, they only wrapped the wooden feet. read more

This place is a total disaster. I would give it zero stars if I could. My experience with Leather Menders was bad in an epic way. Sorry for the long review... I have two leather chairs from my parents that are probably 30 years old and are really unique and special. I've never seen any other chairs like them. The leather was aniline (natural, treated with a simple clear coating) and great quality, but had stains and wear from age. I took them to Leather Menders to see if they could clean them up, remove some of the stains, but keep the natural look. Other places where I had inquired told me that they would just treat the leather with an opaque dye coating -- effectively losing the natural look. Paul at Leather Menders said he wouldn't be able to get them perfect, but that he would be able to clean and wax them while keeping the natural look. He said I would see a big improvement. A month later I called to check in and was told that Paul was working on them and to check back in a week. Same thing happened the following week and the week after. When I was told that they were ready and went to pick them up, I went in and they were awful! They looked like they had been sandpapered and left in the back of a truck for a few weeks. There were sandpaper marks, little grey spots that looked like the beginning of mildew, and strange red/orange marks that looked like something rusty had been sitting on top of them for a long time. There was no coating on them at all. I told Rafael (Paul's co-owner) that they looked much worse than when I brought them in and asked him to fix them. Rafael told me to call and talk to Paul. As a side note, their hours are M-F 9-5, so every time I needed to go to their shop, I had to take off time from work. I called and talked to Paul. He said that the work had not been acceptable and that he had not reviewed it yet when I was told to come pick it up. He said that they would get it fixed. Another month passes and I call again. Paul tells me that he's worked up some samples of the stains that they could apply. He says I should come in to take a look when he's there and we set up a time. I go to the shop and he's not there. Rafael and another guy in the shop show me some different stains that they've applied to one chair. One sample is white, one irridescent, one tan, etc. I pick the one that I like the best and tell them (a clear coat with a light beige tint). A few weeks later, I call to check in again. Paul tells me he's been working on the chairs and I should come by to take a look to see what I think on one of the chairs before they do the other one. I go to the shop yet again. The chair is irridescent -- NOT the color that I had selected. Also, there are suede-like patches where the leather has been over-sanded and is starting to get nubby. I tell Paul. Rather than accepting responsibility for another mistake, he tells me that they just went out and bought a whole tub of irridescent tint just for me -- as if I'm somehow making things difficult for them. Ultimately, he says that he'll fix it. Another few weeks go by. I call again. (At this point, every time I call the folks in the office are short with me on the phone although I've been nothing but polite.) Chairs aren't ready. I call the next week and I'm told that the chairs are ready. I go in the next day. Paul says that he still needs to "buff" them. So I sit and wait for 30 minutes while he buffs them. (So much for them being ready.) The chairs have been painted beige -- with the opaque dye coating that I wanted to avoid all along! I note that the color is ok but they're not the natural look that we had discussed. Paul says he'll knock off $25 from the price he had quoted me "for my time." Are you kidding me? I (calmly and respectully) explain to him that I think he should reduce the price by a lot more than that -- he's had my chairs for nearly five months, and the work he's done is not the work that we agreed upon or that I requested. Paul, Rafael, and the lady at the desk all keep telling me that they've done so much work on these chairs. Um, all of the work was to correct their own mistakes!! The chairs ended up with exactly the type of treatment that I did not want. Paul agrees to reduce the cost by $70 rather than $30 and leaves. I start to pay and the lady at the desk (who I think is his wife) just goes off at me -- ranting about how much work has been involved and how they should go strip the chairs down and give them back to me the way they they were before. I would happily do that if I thought it would be possible to get the chairs back in the condition that they were before -- but I'm convinced they would be destroyed if they tried to strip them. She was totally and completely unprofessional. She was downright nasty and hateful. I resisted the urge to respond likewise. My chairs ended up with exactly the generic, vinyl look I didn't want. It's May now and I'm getting an email from Leather Menders regarding the comment I posted back in Feb. I am more than happy to forward the entire email to anyone. Apparently my comments on yelp were not well received. Here's a bit of that email. "With small businesses closing daily, i feel your comment was unfair and unjust without even a simple follow up call on your part to see if we had received your email. Good luck to you, finding an upolsterer in Austin that will respond to your needs.-----[Leather Menders]" First I mean no harm to small business. Small local business are great. That's what adds charm to Austin. With that being said, Yelp is a forum to express your comments and experience about vendors, regardless of the size. I will not shy away from posting comments (good or bad) because of the size of a business. Secondly, I need to make a correction. On my original posting, I said it was over two weeks and they had yet to get back to me. Well they did contact me after sending a follow up email on Feb. 10th. (Again I can share this with anyone who is interested) As Leather Menders pointed out in the email they sent me this morning (5/4/09), it wasn't over two week. It was from Jan 30 to Feb 10th before I got a response from them. I stand corrected. It was 7 days not 10 before they got back to me.... Much better response time than I had originally put. Props to Christine A for the referral. I used these guys to repair a leather car seat with 200k miles on it. They gave me options and did a great job. I was VERY happy with their work. The only reason that I give these guys 4 stars instead of 5 is that they aren't very good (pretty bad actually ) at follow-up. They're great at repairing leather (or using vinyl if you need a less expensive alternative) but bad at being organized, follow-up calls, "hey your steering wheel wrap is in" calls, etc. read more

ATTENTION: this review is for customer service only. We DID NOT use leather menders to fix our sofa, but we did try and were displeased by the service. I have a leather couch that I received from my parents as a housewarming gift a few years ago. We noticed a small tear in it and asked the leather menders for a quote on fixing it. The good - they offer quotes via email and respond quickly, 4 stars for quick response. The bad - they can't fix our couch because of the type of leather it is - apparently not super high quality so they won't touch it. BUT, the thing that made our experience with leather menders unpleasant is the type of response we got. The company was very short with us and, after they said they couldn't fix it (in a less than pleasant tone) their response to us asking for a home remedy was "buy real leather next time." Lack of helpfulness and judgmental tone, 1 star. So yeah, not pleased with the customer service. This may not be a reflection of the quality of their work and I encourage everyone to try them out for yourselves, but even if they had said they could fix it the tone they took with us this early on would have sent us elsewhere. Hopefully others will have a better experience, but it seems worthy of a head's up. Still hoping to find a way to fix our beloved, apparently garbage, couch but it's back to square one for us! read more

Like Andrew G., I discovered Leather Menders via reference from a car dealership, in this case the local Lexus dealer. I'd just bought an eight-year-old coupe from a family friend that was in nearly perfect condition except for the driver's seat, which was worn to the point of the foam being exposed. Two days later, the seat emerged looking literally like new. I don't know what kind of mojo they use to produce these kinds of results, but they truly work wonders. This past week I had more of a challenge for them: I'd managed to ding the hell out of my mom's SUV's dashboard while carting an extra-long and extra-heavy set of bookcase shelves that required me to prop them on edge on the dash. Said shelves promptly embedded themselves in the dash's vinyl, and since Mom's in the process of selling the car (and I didn't even want to think about what it'd cost to order and install a new dash from the local dealership), I took it to Leather Menders to see if they could handle the task. After a hearty "Boy, how in the hell did you manage to do THAT?", they took it in and fixed it just about perfectly for $150. My only complaint is that they took quite a bit longer than they first estimated but it was a lot of work and they gave me an unrequested 10% discount in the end that made up for it. Christine A's recommendation comes through again! I have a leather executive desk chair that cost me a lot of money about 10 yrs ago. I wanted to bring it to my new job, but the arm rests were pretty ragged. I was a little apprehensive about taking it in that condition. I almost got one of those DIY kits to try and repair it myself, but everything I saw online (that was written by someone who knows what they're talking about) said to avoid DIY methods. That said, I didn't want to pay a ton of money to have the arm rests fixed. Luckily, there's Yelp! I started looking around and saw Christine had good luck w/ Leather Menders, and I saw they aren't too far from where I live. I got in touch w/ Paul (the owner) on a Saturday. BTW, they're open 9-5 Mon-Fri...I couldn't find that anywhere on their site, Yelp, or otherwise. Anyway, Paul the owner was doing some work on a Saturday. I happened to catch him while he was there and told me to bring by the arm rests. Once I brought them by, we agreed on a price to fix them (only 50 bucks!) and away I went. 3 days later the arm rests were repaired and are as good as new. I was completely naive on replacing the worn out upholstery in my vehicle. I asked three independent sources (2 full service car washes and a body shop) their recommendation. They all didn't hesitate in recommending Leather Menders. I stopped by to try and get a bid and an appointment, 90 minutes later I was leaving with my seat reupholstered and my console leather replaced. These folks are fast, fair, and competent. The black on the armrests of my 2006 350Z was almost gone on the driver's side and half gone on the passenger side. A really lousy job by Nissan. Anyway, I've decided that I still like the car and it drives well. So I'm keeping it. Terex Auto Body which is in my neighborhood said I should contact Leather Menders. I went to see Paul and while he was not sure how he would handle it he was sure he could do it. Eventually, I was able to get the car to him. It took longer than he thought but I was fine with that as I just wanted it looking better. Communication with Paul and Tammy was difficult as calls were not returned at all. I told them as much when I picked up my car. They seemed to acknowledge as much. Anyway, the work was perfect. Paul made the armrests look better than new. He also touched up sweat stains on the leather seats and scratches on the dash. Seriously, the interior of my car looks as it did when I bought it 12 years ago. I had a sun-baked dashboard with pieces of brown leather flaking away and spreading.
