I had a child's chair covered that I found at Salvation Army. It was really ugly when I bought it with velour material and a skirt on it. I called Alvarez Upholstery for a qoute and Shirley responded very quickly with a very reasonable price. I took the chair in and they did an amazing job. He not only recovered it but stripped it down to the bones and replaced the springs and padding. To my suprise I learned the chair had been previously covered four times. The cushions for this 20 year old glider were no longer available from the manufacturer. I've fell asleep in this chair many times over the years and wouldn't have even thought about throwing it out. Alvarez Upholstery not only did a stellar job with re-upholstering a pair of mid-century modern chairs and their ottomans, they tightened the joints of the chair and refurbished the seat and ottoman padding. They look beautiful! They also showed me how I could removed the legs without harming the new upholstery, so that the wooden legs can be sanded and refinished. They finished the job much faster than I expected, and they were wonderful to work with. Worth every penny. read more

Their quote was more than fair and lower than several other upholsterers in town and they did even more than I expected by adding extra padding (at no extra charge, unlike other shops that quoted extra charges for every single thing). OMG! They Alvarez's are terrific, both personally and professionally. Husband/wife business working out of their home in far north Austin. Multi-generations of Alvarez upholsterers who are very proud of their superior workmanship, as they well should be! I wanted to recover a very tired, beloved 10 year old kitchen 3 piece sectional sofa. All other estimates were 2-3 times what I originally paid for the sofa, excluding fabric, and whatever extra batting was needed for cushions. Mr. Alvarez assured me he'd do an exceptional job and I'd love my new sofa! His quote was 900. which was amazing! And on pick up, he'd added extra batting in the back and seats and made me 3 lg pillows from the extra fabric and batting, at NO CHARGE! They manage their schedule so you know when they'll actually do your piece; they pick up and deliver, even my giant couch, as part of the estimate; their fabric estimate, made from photos and dimensions, was just right, leaving me enough leftover to make a cushion cover. Mr. Alvarez repaired some broken wood in the back of my leather couch a few years ago and it is still going strong. He picked up the couch from our house and returned it the next day. More recently, a large rip appeared in the leather of the same couch (kids?) and Mr. Alvarez repaired that as well. You would never know it had been fixed. His ad in Yelp says he does "some repair work", but I personally will give him a chance to fix something if he says he can do it. read more
