After using Long Upholstery for years and recommending to friends, I took an antique oak and rattan sofa with feather cushions that I've had for years to reupholster. The seat cushions were replaced with foam covered Dacron. I contacted John several times, telling him I knew they were feather and didn't want it changed. They were heavy and loose. Now they are light weight. He first told me they wrapped the feathers in Dacron. The second time he told him the same thing. When I opened the cushion to see what was inside, I sent him a photo of the foam core covered in Dacron. Now he is saying that the foam was what was inside when I brought it and they had just wrapped with Dacron to make the cushion fuller, and that I was confused. Pros: Walked out and greeted me, helpful with putting together bid. Cons: Overpriced (at least for my project) and OK with it. Went in for pricing of reupholstering outdoor seating cushions. Said he needed 30 yards and wanted $30/yard, plus labor. Would have cost more than purchasing brand new cushions. When stating concern, had a "special deal" on fabric at half price. Still more than I was comfortable paying. Went to another competitor (will provide a glowing review once their work is done) and they calculated needing 13 yards (they said that was more than enough to complete the work) and provided options for reasonable pricing towards Sunbrella fabric. Purchased high grade Sunbrella fabric for $23/yard due to their guidance. Grand total came in half price of what Long was wanting. I hope I'm wrong, but here's my assumption. It appears to me that Long Upholstery was attempting to double up on my fabric needs to profit from a future sale or project. Glad I went with my gut instinct that this seemed excessive. read more

Great Work - Great Turnaround -Was able to surprise wife We took a midcentury chair to Mr. Long to reupholster. We read all the reviews on yelp before taking it in. I will say that some of the concerns raised in the reviews seemed plausible after my visit (They are working on tons of pieces so you can see how something might get misplaced). We dropped off the chair with the fabric and told it would be 10 days. I got a phone call 5 days later telling me my chair was ready to pick up! This allowed me to grab the chair over the weekend so I could surprise my wife who thought it might not be done until the end of the next week. Here's to you Mr. Long and his crew. Laura responded to my request for a bid within an hour. Her initial contact was full of important information and questions (unlike the 4 other businesses that responded). She came out within a couple of days, did measurements, provided me with samples of fabrics (but I ended up buying my fabric elsewhere which was no problem for Laura). We took the seat cushions and bed from our Sailboat in to Long's. The old cushions not only needed new upholstery, they needed the memory foam and dense foam replaced.These were very large cushions and bedding. A difficult job indeed! John paid great attention to the details of what this job entailed. The bed cushions were composed of irregular shapes, the bench seating was like a small couch with snaps and tufts and buttons, and the job entailed velvet fabric and vinyl bottoms. A Long Story - Short. Had known Mr. Long for quite some time. Called his shop and asked for him. Someone said she was the wife. Drove there and found out that Mr. Long retired and sold the shop. Brought 4 pillows, which Mr. Long had actually done some 7 yrs ago. The woman shot a pic with her cell phone, and shortly thereafter this dude came on the phone and quoted some fantasy-land price. Simply said it was a "lot of labor" and "if you don't like it, do them yourself". Took my pillows, my memories of Mr. Long's customer care, and sent them to hell. Will not be back. Ever. read more

I will be the only voice of dissent on here, but here goes. I brought my four window seat cushions in to be covered with the gray canvas fabric that I provided. John seemed very put out that I did not have any covers for him to replicate, even though I explained we just built the window seat, I bought and cut the foam myself for the cushions, and they have never been covered before. But he kept complaining about it, and must have said about ten times that I didn't understand what he was telling me. We argued quite a bit and the staff kept looking at us. He wanted measurements. I asked why he couldn't measure the cushions and I offered to measure them myself. No no no I don't understand. He would not be responsible for the way they turned out if I didn't give him measurements. Ok, and will measure them and no no no the covers will be too loose. Well, John, I don't want them to be loose. Then he will have to take half an inch off of each measurement so they won't be loose. That's fine with me John, why don't we do that? We went around and around like this until he finally agrees to take my order. Cash only. No credit cards. No checks. If it wasn't for all of the glowing reviews on Yelp, I would have otherwise run out of a business like this, but Yelp, I trust you. I asked him if he has white piping? Of course he says with a scoff as if I have insulted him by suggesting that he might not. OK, so I would like white piping. Along the top and bottom? Yes. I also want the cushions to be wrapping in batting before they are covered. No problem. So finally he hands me his order form and has ME write up the order. I include all of the measurements. I include batting and white piping. He quotes me a reasonable price and I write that on his order form. He reads it over out loud to me, adds the tax and total, and hands me a carbon copy. He says they will be ready tomorrow. I look around the shop and think no way. I'm in no hurry and say how about next week? He says Monday. I leave feeling emotionally exhausted. I have never done business with such a defensive, combative, disagreeable person. Monday. The cushions have gray piping instead of white piping, and they are not finished. John is not there, and someone calls him and hands me the phone. John says when he told me he had white piping, he meant the cording INSIDE the piping was white. WHAT? John, you know I wanted the outside of the piping to be white, why would I care about the inside? We argue about this for a minute or two, then John wants to know if I can bring him white fabric for the piping. Nope, I'm not going to do that. He asks me what kind of fabric I want for the piping, but doesn't say he's fixing it or not. He tries to tell me when they will be ready and I say please don't tell me now, just call me when they are. Wednesday I get a call they are ready. I am really nervous, ready for the worst and more arguing. I get there and can see them there, PERFECT and beautiful. Added bonus - John is not there and I am able to do business with the rest of his staff who are very pleasant, personable and professional. Honestly, I would have rather paid double somewhere else and not have to deal with John. I would never recommend this place to a friend, and I will never go back, but had to give them 3 stars for the low price and quality work. In the end they made it right. read more

This was my second time to use Long Upholstery. The first project was a wingback chair that turned out okay, but had a few slight pattern matching issues. This time it was an ottoman, chair and pillows. The original quote seemed high, but after a little negotiating we agreed on a price. This time the pattern matching was much worse. Particularly on the ottoman. When I complained he agreed to fix it, but I had to purchase two more yards of fabric at my expense (over $100). The ottoman was corrected and looks fine now, but the consistently poor quality and lack of remorse or discount to cover the cost of the additional fabric will keep me from using Long in the future. They may be fine for basic jobs, but be very careful on more complex jobs. Especially if using expensive fabrics. read more

We are very happy with the work Long's did for us. We took them 8 VERY large cushions from a built-in sofa. They referred us to another shop (can't think of the name now) to buy our fabric. We had the fabric shipped straight to Long's and our cushions were recovered in a very timely fashion. In comparison to other shops, they were the most reasonably priced and worth the drive from South to North Austin. Be advised they do not accept credit cards and the shop is a bit hard to find. Here's the truth, this place was once very good, hence the positive reviews, likely when Mr Long was involved in the business. It is now a scary, filthy mess. When you step onto the property, listen to your gut when it says turn around and get back into your car. Trust your instincts and find someone else. I did not, and regret it. They reupholstered a small, modern recliner for me. They took weeks longer than promised, and the work is very sloppy, i.e., staples sticking out, pieces of fabric not tacked down, the wood trim that they refinished is now peeling off, and they overstuffed the foot piece so that it drags and gets stuck on the floor when retracting... read more

We had 4 kitchen chairs that needed to be upholstered (contemporary). The first place we went to told us that they could not do them because they would be very difficult to get the tight fit for the fabric to look good. They gave me 2 referrals. Went to visit the first referral and their price was like buying new chairs but instead of only buying 4 chairs it would have cost us the price of 8 chairs brand new. Mr. Long did a wonderful job. We left the one chair we had brought and then the next day we brought the other 3 chairs. He had the first chair almost completely done. They told us they would probably be ready to be picked up on Monday. They called us Friday and told us the chairs were ready if we wanted to pick them up. We picked them up that afternoon. I sent the owner the dimensions and pictures of the cushions I needed reupholestered. I received a quote for labor only of $320. I ordered the fabric as instructed. When he arrived to pick up the cushions the estimate almost doubled to $570. DO NOT TAKE YOUR FURNITURE HERE! I have been using Long's Upholstery for 2 years and he once was absolutely amazing. After he got in his accident and is no longer around to manage his shop, it has all gone to crap. On numerous occasions, he has lost our fabric and we had to purchase more and he has given away an antique french grainsack cushion for my sofa to another client! Don't expect to have your job done the way you want it. He once put nailheads on one chair, and didn't put nailheads on the matching one. He didn't follow pattern instructions (w/ a drawn out picture) and upholstered a beautiful set of French chairs in the wrong fabric! There has been numerous occasions when he says that projects will be done by a certain date, and then asks for more time. He sits on projects for FOREVER. He says he will return your call and then NEVER DOES. All in all, if you want your furniture upholstered in the wrong fabric, have your fabric LOST, have your pieces GIVEN AWAY, and wait a lifetime for projects to be completed, then Long's is the place for you. Take my advice and never use his upholstery services until he gets his act together. read more
