Went to Learned Lumber and was told Dave was at lunch. Came back an hour and fifteen minutes later and was told he couldn't meet with us because he won't meet with individuals any longer. Learned put all the doors in our home. The original owner lived two doors down from us. Very bad customer service. BTW, when trying to reach Dave I had to call, even though I was in the store and the gals would transfer me to him. Very poor system. read more

The images show them leaning side by side against a wall with a top and bottom view that shows the poorly done cuts (gaps at top, leaning in bottom view). Haven't written a review in forever, but this place deserves it. The staff is so incredibly helpful and friendly. Not only did they help me pick out the right materials, but they also gave me free, clean, mahogany pallets! Craig is amazing. Everyone really. Some of the guys working in the lumber yard area were laughing at me cause I've been there about 4 times this week. And of course important, they're all wearing masks, and CONSTANTLY wiping down the checkout area and credit/debit card machine. Between each patron they make sure to fully wipe it down. I've ordered a few thousand dollars of materials (mostly siding) from these guys. Generally, they are helpful and friendly. Sometimes, however, their computer system and order management system is very frustrating. For example, I've called up a few times wanting to reorder siding that i'd ordered previously. I guess the computer system they use doesn't have a good customer lookup function because whomever is working always asks me for my old invoice number (no, i never have an invoice from 1 year ago handy). It then takes them a long time to look me up by name. Seems like this should be a simple process. read more

This place is pretty good. I've purchased a few thing from here. Don't think it is a normal 'hardware' store. The Hardware store products inside are going to be more expensive than a Home Depot etc... But by the name of the place this is a Lumber Yard, you go here for lumber because they have a pretty good selection and it's not all the same stuff you could get at a Home Depot type place. The hours aren't convenient for me, but to a contractor they might be. I'll go back but if I just need a screwdriver, saw, or a pair of pliers, I'll probably go to a place closer to home. read more

Shady and dishonest. Overcharged without approval. I ordered some Cedar lumber over the phone to be delivered to my house. The guy I spoke with quoted me a price and I placed the order. During this he agreed that if the price was higher than the quote, he would call me back to confirm. No call-back ever occurred. When I looked at the price they charged to my account after receiving the lumber, it was 11% higher than quoted. They obviously just padded the charge to my card without approval. I could do a charge-back on my card and return the lumber, but I'll just eat the cost and chock it up to the cost of learning not to do business with them again. The wood was delivered as specified and on time, and they get a star for that. Will not do business with them again. After relating this story to some of the older generation in the South Bay, they laughed and said they already knew not to deal with these ass-hats. Guess I should have asked around first. read more

The advantage of this facility is the proximity to the Beach Cities. However, it ends there. I have come to this place to order parts for my Integrity brand windows/doors. They are a distributor for them. This has been my 3rd visit. Although you don't see much traffic, the windows/door staff always appears too busy to help you. The first visit, I brought in my screen door to purchase a replacement. They told that they did not recognize the set up and send me on my way. I later validated that it was a Integrity brand and downloaded the catalog. I came by a second time and showed them the catalog. Mike indicated that he was busy that day but would place the order. He asked me to followup with and email with pictures. I did that and also made specific list of the parts I needed. He told me it would be 3 weeks ETA. I followed up 3 weeks later and Mike told me that he had not done anything yet. That it had not been his priority.....What? What kind of a business is this. Could have used the 3 weeks buying from another supplier had I known they don't place any priority to non contractors. Mike did not offer any sort of resolution and said he would try to get to it. I'm selling my house and need to get the sliding screens replaced. Therefore, I said I would follow-up again at the end of the week. Mind you, that department is closed on Fridays..... Not happy thus far with my experience at this store. Would not recommend it. read more

Update: November 3, 2012 I went back to this place again today (undercover) to give them a second chance. I really do prefer going here to Home Depot so I thought I shouldn't give up after one bad experience. Everybody was super friendly and helpful and I didn't experience any of the problems in my original review. I'm changing my review to three stars but leaving the old one just in case others have problems with that same employee. Update: September 29, 2012 I received a call from the manager at the store who assured me that this kind of behavior from employees was not acceptable. He said they were having a store-wide meeting and the employee who did this would be held responsible for their actions. He sounded pretty serious, jumped right on getting a bad review here, and assured me my experience would be a one-time thing. Original Review: I would never go here again! I was told to go here by a local hardware store who apparently didn't know any better. The prices on plywood here are insane. I bought some for a shelving unit of mine and ended up paying about $12 a shelf, not a price you'd expect for such a cheap product. When I went outside to get the wood cut, I had to track down an employee who was subsequently furious that the guy who normally does cut-to-size orders had walked off the premises and I get the impression this wasn't a one-time issue. As I sat for around twenty minutes watching my wood get cut, the employee doing the work kept spouting off at the other employees yelling about how his co-worker who abandoned him was a "fucking faggot". Most of my experiences with local businesses have been excellent and I went out of my way to find a place aside from Home Depot where I could get lumber. I would have reported this incident to the store but given that all the employees didn't seem to care, I guess this kind of bigoted language is commonplace there. Maybe that guy will get fired, but I'm certainly never going back. read more

I asked for a 1/2 piece of plywood 60" x 36" and I got a 1/2 piece of plywood 57" x 36". What else do I have to say. I guess he knew what I wanted better than I did. Look for the lot about a block before the sign for the store if you're coming from the south, heading north. Turn right before the Standard Brand paint store, and then find the lot on your right. **JOAQUIN (salesman) -WINDOW SHOWROOM** review only, not Learned Lumber in general. My wife and I are replacing all windows and doors in our home and will spend ~20k. Our contractor sent us there to look at options and ask questions. From the moment we walked in Joaquin let us know that he usually works directly with contractors and treated us with borderline hostility. When spending this kind of money, I like to do my research. I suppose it was SILLY of me to think I could learn about a product with a customer service rep in the SHOWROOM. So, I killed him with kindness because we where there and needed information. Finally we where able to learn more about the windows and doors and left. My wife and I chalked it up to Joaquin having a bad day... My wife went in a week later to finalize what we wanted and Joaquin was a complete JERK to her. He told her that she couldn't get black exterior and black interior windows (like its SO rare). Said that if she wanted that it would cost double. His best line was "the type of window you want you basically cant have". OH, and he couldn't get her a quote for another WEEK, on anything. We went to 2 other showrooms (One Stop and Cooks) and they were both great. I walked in, they took me right to the windows we were trying to find, super nice people at both places, and I had a quote THAT day from One Stop and the next day from Cooks. OH, and the windows that Joaquin said would be double the price, were in our budget. FUNNY THING....Joaquin heard that we went somewhere else for quotes and got us a quote on windows that he said didn't exist and would cost double. They weren't double but his quote WAS more than the other two. Even if he' been less expensive, I didn't want to order from this guy that treated us like garbage. STAY AWAY FROM JOAQUIN. Not a nice guy. I cant say anything about Learned Lumber but Joaquin turned me off completely. read more

Repeat customer. Great place with a great staff. Good selection. It has an old school vibe, but it's not archaic. They take credit cards with no minimums, which is a huge plus. The only thing that could be a small drawback is that it's an open lumber yard, so the wood is subject to the elements. But the staff will take the time to help you select the wood you want, if you need really straight boards, for example. Nonetheless, still 5 stars. read more

Came home today to find my front window broken. Took a quick look prepared to pull a piece of glass out of the garage to fix it. A broken window pane is no unusual thing as my windows date back to 1900. This time however I find a muntin is also broken (also known as that wooden thing that actually holds the glass panes in a wood window.) by some impact. I quickly googled lumber yard knowing that this is not a chain store part and was pleased to see one nearby. I called Learned lumber and was transferred to "lumber". The first person I spoke to had no idea what I was talking about even after I described it several ways. He put me on hold. Then someone else picked up. I had to repeat the whole conversation but he finally said that they had some of a limited variety but was not sure they would match mine. I said I would be over to check if they matched mine. I asked him if they were open to 5 pm and he assured me they were. I was already in the car by then and on my way. It took me almost 30 minutes to get across town and rolled into their parking lot at 4:55. Normally I would not go into a store that close to closing but 1) I know what I want, 2) someone knows they have them, 3) will grab what I need and pay cash. As I crossed the parking lot I passed a group of about six people sitting in the lot drinking beer. It struck me an odd place to drink but I kept moving. Entered store through open gate and passed through open door. I waited for a minute for the person at the desk to stop their personal conversation but that didn't happen so in the interest of speed I went looking for someone else. I finally found someone towards the back of the store who immediately informed me that they were closed. I said, yes closing soon but I called about this and I just need pointed to them. He said, yes those, that aisle is closed. So he knew what I was talking about. He then proceeded to walk me back to the front of the store telling me that they were closed and I could come back in the morning. At this point I pulled out my phone just in time to see 4:59 become 5 pm. I showed him this as he led me out the door. He said, come back tomorrow. I said "Yes sure, I will drive back a half hour to the other side of town to turn around and do it tomorrow for what may or may not be the part I need." He replied "OOsh" and then proceeded to join the beer drinking group. Which is when I realized that these were the employees! So I wasted an hour of my time and my gas to be treated quite rudely by the store. Honestly, if this store is the last place in town to carry these, I will wittle my own part before buying from them. Simple answer that could have avoided bad reviews and a customer who will never again consider you for business? "Are you open until 5?" "Yes, normally, but today we are closing a little early so if you are going to be here in just a few minutes we could wait for you, otherwise try us in the morning." I would have respected the honesty and gone over in the morning if I had not found something else first. I would have remembered that honesty and tried them the next time I needed something. Instead I wasted a whole bunch of time and they are getting a WHOLE LOT of negative reviews. read more

Guys! I have lived in the South Bay for all of my 35 years. I have never stepped foot inside Learned Lumber until today. A few months ago I started my own small business. I make awesome things out of wood. But this isn't about me. I've always taken my business to Lowe's, simply because I didn't feel intimidated by Lowe's. A lumber yard just seemed a little intimidating to me. Out of desperation, I went to Learned today. I was treated SO WELL and the guys were SO down to earth, that I will probably never step foot in Lowe's again! Not to mention the quality of wood far surpassed anything I've ever purchased from Lowe's. I'm currently working on a custom hanging shelf for a client and I'm so motivated to finish this project, simply because I feel like I'm working with a more quality product. I'm currently wishing I had a time machine, so I could travel back in time to my first wood purchase, and go to Learned vs Lowe's! read more

Learned lumber is awesome. I have been coming here for years. I mainly come here for my windows and doors but I also come here for lumber as well. These guys are fast, reasonable and friendly. I don't get the same treatment when going to other lumber yards. I have to point out one employee that works with the doors and windows. that's Joaquin. He is so knowledgeable about windows and doors, its as if he memorized the books. I specifically deal with Joaquin only when it comes to windows and doors. Every order I place with him, he ensures that the order is correct, its exactly what I need, keeps me posted on delivery dates and times and calls me the moment my product has arrived. walks with me and makes sure the product is not damaged and is exactly what I ordered. the quality of the products they sell are amazing. the prices are totally reasonable. for the quality of the products that they sell, its worth every penny. thank you learned lumber for having such an awesome employee Joaquin to help me with my orders. see you soon. read more
