We went for lunch during the week. They were very busy so we had to wait to be seated but the staff was very friendly and had a positive attitude even though they were running around. I ordered the vegan buffalo cauliflower tacos. They were small portion, but delicious! My meat-eating husband even loved them saying it was the best cauliflower he had ever had! My husband ordered the scrambled tofu/egg mix huevos rancheros. He stated they were delicious! For drinks, I got the kombucha on tap, which was a hibiscus flavor. Note: My overall rating is 4.5 stars. The delicious food was 5 stars. I had the special Spaghetti Squash Pesto entre and was not disappointed. The Jamaican Jerk Tempeh was also excellent. High quality and healthy. Beautifully prepared. The waitress and all help were 5 stars. Great service and recommendations. The atmosphere was also 5 stars. We also really enjoyed sitting in a nice booth. My only recommendation would be to not charge a kitchen/farm worker Surcharge fee and instead include that in the price of the food. Keep the bill more simple. Out of state people like me should also be aware you are also paying a sales tax. (My state does not have one). You also have a tip to pay of course. Which we very generously paid due to the great experience. And a 4th non-food charge may be to pay for parking outside. ( Unless you park after 7pm.) In a time where Bolder has left diners high and dry in terms of options of food, price, and happy hour, this place delivers time and time again. This has been one of the few very inviting restaurants in the county for solo diners and families alike. It's a family run business, and you're treated as such from the very beginning. The wait staff, bar staff, and overall environment is warm and friendly. The ingredients they use are all fresh and local which drive the desire to keep coming back for more. We've been on multiple occasions, brunch and happy hour, and would do dinner in a heartbeat. We visited during happy hour and decided to try pretty much everything! We went with the tofu fries, Buffalo cauliflower taco, mushroom slider, crab cake slider, harissa tofu, calamari oyster muchroom, gyoza, and some fries. The tofu fries themselves were a bit bland and not our favorite, but the sauce was really good. I'd recommend holding onto the sauce for the calamari oyster mushrooms, although we unfortunately didn't get to try these together as our server cleared the sauce away before we were done with it. The Buffalo cauliflower was good and spicier than expected! The sliders were fine, but I would maybe skip these next time. We added on the regular and sweet potato fries to these, and they were great. The harissa tofu was interesting - I'm not sure I'd had much harissa before this! Fun flavor profile to try; I might get this again. The oyster mushroom calamari style were great! I've never actually had calamari, so can't compare, but I loved the crispy breading and texture. Save the sauce from the tofu fries for this! And the gyoza. Nicely fried, decent sauce. Not the most memorable part of the meal, but I would probably get these again. Overall really fun experience and we enjoyed trying so many different things. The outdoor seating was great for enjoying the day and the people watching. We noticed other tables were offered complimentary focaccia (we weren't) - maybe this is just for if you order an entree? Portions were decent sized generally for tapas. read more

It's always a goal of mine to try to visit vegan/vegetarian restaurants when in particular cities so Leaf drew my eye when in Boulder. I arrived with a couple friends on a Monday for lunch so it was a fairly relaxing environment. Our server was pretty chill and enjoyable which seems indicative of an entire state that has legalized marijuana and a liberal bubble like Boulder that no doubt embraces that. We ordered an oyster mushroom calamari as an appetizer for the table. I also had the crab cake sandwich with a side of tortilla soup. It was delicious all around. Having allergies, I miss calamari and so this fraudulent feeling of calamari via oyster mushrooms was particularly enjoyable. The crab cake sandwich was on par with many such vegetarian/vegan crab cakes that I've had. My friends who joined me also were happy with their food decisions. The only things that prevent me from a 5-star rating may be price as well as that our host was strangely taking our plates out of the way well before we may have been finished with them. Not a huge issue but it was just a little bizarre with the nature of how relaxed the vibe was in the place. In conclusion, Boulder is very white and liberal and so going to a vegetarian restaurant is probably the whitest, most liberal place you could select in the town. I mean someone else at the restaurant was wearing a "Make America Gay Again" red hat which I am happy to believe in except for the fact that it's based off a concept from the mind of your supposed enemy and spread by his dumb, insane followers. We were in Boulder for a circus performance at Dairy Arts Center. Just over a mile away is Pearl street and while walking about after the show we found Leaf. I am a 30+ year vegetarian with a veg heavy omnivore family. It was delightful. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to accommodate us. Service was great and the food was fantastic. It isn't easy to find higher end veg dining and they do it beautifully. We were a party of four who love to try everything so we had two small plates and ended up with three entrees and we were stuffed! The jerk tempeh, avocado mushroom tartare and spaghetti squash puttanesca were the favorites. Fresh juice and a full bar round this restaurant out nicely. I am headed out for a 6 month work stint in rural Wyoming cattle country so an evening of divine food made just for my palette and lifestyle while absorbing the beautiful Boulder energy was just the fix I needed. We have lived in the area for over a decade, and wanted to do something special for my milestone birthday ( 60). My husband specifically mentioned this in the reservation. We showed up on time, and mentioned it to the hostess, who said she would let the kitchen know. Nothing happened, however, from either the hostess or the waitress ( who wished me after I mentioned it). After we paid, just before leaving, I asked the hostess what I should have expected ( since nothing special happened). She said they were really busy, and said she was sorry. I asked what would have happened normally, and she said they would have brought my food out with a candle. Very odd to have a candle with my sandwich. She also said she would have to check with the kitchen to see what they might have done. Generally unclear on the concept of birthday celebrations at the restaurant. I called to ask the manager what their policy is, and he said they do try to make the guest feel special and bring out a candle. That they used to do desserts, and don't any more. And that he was sorry it fell through for me, and would talk to staff about getting it " right" next time. No next time for us. That's for sure. Waitress was pleasant, food was adequate, but overall, not something that blew us away or made me feel celebrated. read more

We showed up around 8 without reservations on a Friday and we're surprised to immediately be given a table for our party 4. The ambiance was great, upscale, comfortable, plants everywhere, the restaurant was fully open to the street. We ordered the soup of the day, the seaweed salad, the tempeh, the rooibos tea and the hard kombucha as only 2 of us were eating. The bowl of curried cauliflower soup was delicious, the small seaweed salad as well. The tempeh dish was unexpectedly tiny and homogenized into the rice, but still very tasty. The rooibos tea was stand out, the kombucha not so much, but easy to drink and enjoy. Our waiter was amazing. We escaped at $54 so not bad at all. This is a vegetarian restaurant that offers vegan options. Just a heads up -- they are moving down the street in the near future (and thus are not serving alcohol until the move because their liquor license at this property had expired after the move was delayed). Unfortunately, my overall experience here was a bit lackluster. FOOD: For the most part, really tasty. The crab cake slider, the mushroom burger slider, and the sweet potato gnocchi were fantastic. It took a really long time for anyone to come over and offer the check (our plates sat empty for a while). After we received the bill, another long period passed until someone came to pick it up. My water wasn't refilled even though my glass was empty for a while. It wasn't busy or anything (late afternoon on a Saturday). There were maybe three other tables with customers. I also counted the number of staff at the time -- there were six women working. Six. There is no excuse for lack of attention. MENU: The happy hour menu had great options and excellent prices. However, we were told that it was the only thing they were serving (on a Saturday afternoon). We decided to stay anyway but I'm not sure why the main menu was not accessible. I was excited to try this place, but the food here was just OK, if not a bit disappointing across the board. The mushroom burger (which has a patty made from quinoa and other ingredients) had a weird artificial butter flavor. Maybe they had sprayed a butter substitute on the brioche bun? Not sure... But in general, the burger was oddly sweet. It also completely fell apart when I attempted to eat it like a burger, so I had to eat it with a fork. The Greek salad was also disappointing--just greens, green olives, and the tiniest bit of feta cheese, with a simple vinaigrette. No red onion or anything to give it more flavor. We ate here once when we were feeling rather aspirational-- like, "we should become vegetarians, but let's give this place a try first." Unfortunately, I was not converted. In fact, I remember thinking that I would have to order three meals to leave the restaurant satiated. This was a long time ago, and although we still eat all kinds of meat, the good news is that I do remember that we had one thing here that was really, really good. I think it was a dessert-- the vegetarian cheesecake was it? Have you ever had one of those days where you eat a big hamburger for lunch and you can't even imagine eating dinner? As a vegetarian I usually only have 3-6 choices on any given menu, so I was pleasantly overwhelmed at my options at Leaf. Luckily for me, you can't go wrong here. Everything I ate was awesome. My family has been vegan since 1997, and it was tough back then, eating out. Every restaurant that was vegan was also extremely health conscious and was usually raw, bland, and overpriced. Unfortunately the meal my husband and I got felt like a flashback to the 90s. I got the smothered burrito and my husband got the scramble, both vegan. Let's start with the tofu. Very bland and overly watery (which happens when it's either not pressed properly and or not cooked long enough.) I can make really delicious tofu scramble at my house for a fifth of the cost, so it's disappointing when I go out and spend a lot for such poor quality. Veganism is not an excuse for underflavored, badly cooked food. Everything I make should make my eyes roll to the back of my head or I'm not satisfied. Add nutritional yeast, pepper, salt, and whatever other spices you want. But at the moment it's unacceptable. The potatoes in my breakfast burrito were undercooked and underflavored. When I got a big bite of the burrito, the yummiest thing in there were the black beans, and that's basically all I could taste. The 'smother' was basically a flavorless slosh with some capsaicin in it. The biscuits tasted like cardboard, and the gravy just tasted like watery mushrooms. I'm being harsh because this is 2020, and there's no excuse for bland, low quality vegan food anymore, especially in a place like Boulder. I wish I could pop in and give advice on all the dishes and help you guys out, because you need a cook who's been vegan for a long time and doesn't just substitute a for b and leaves it at that, but makes the vegan version as delicious, albeit different, as the non vegan equivalent. I imagine their non vegan, vegetarian dishes must be much tastier as it's easier for cooks to rely heavily on things like butter and cheese and eggs to make things yummy. I highly recommend getting a good, vegan chef who knows what they're doing, because the cooks you have right now aren't up to snuff with competing vegan restaurants/dishes. Play around with your vegan recipes, they should all be orgasmic. Those of us who've been vegan for a long time won't settle for anything that reminds us of the 90s vegan lifestyle or before. Gravy: Sauté 1/3rd an onion and 4 cloves of garlic in half a cup of EVOO until the onion is translucent. Then add half a cup of flour, 1/4 cup of soy sauce (or liquid aminos,) 4 tsp of nutritional yeast, and stir until the paste thickens (don't let it burn, browning is fine.) Then add in 2 cups of vegetable broth, 1/4 tsp white pepper (black is fine,) 1/2 tsp Sage, and whisk frequently/constantly until it's the desired texture. Sprinkle of salt if needed, though I seldom do. That recipe right there will help get you 5 star reviews alone, it's SO yummy. Been using it for years. Make all your recipes phenomenal! I took my dad here for his birthday and we had a great meal! I ordered the sushi salad and the mushroom pate and had a blackberry mint lemonade to drink. I like that they have a variety of teas and juices to choose from! For dessert, we ordered the rhubarb crisp and the peanut butter cheesecake. Both were incredible! 5 stars isn't enough to express how amazing this place is. I appreciate that whole food items stand in for meat substitutes (rather than boring store bought replacements which are good, but I can make at home for free am and left wondering why the heck I paid $15 for the same beyond burger I have in my fridge *shrug*) thus Leaf offers a unique blend of flavors that aren't trying to be like 'yo I'm calamari but like not really' and instead are authentic and classy. As far as the staff go, everyone was really friendly and offered a great wine pairing suggestion for the cauliflower taco's. And when I left my favorite sweater there, the staff really went out of their way to re-unite me. This place is totally worth checking out whether your in Denver, Boulder, heck... Amazing food and great staff! We came by for my birthday the other night (lucky for me, my friends are not opposed to going vegetarian when it's my night). Everyone had an awesome time and even the meat-eater was talking about it for days. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower tacos and the watermelon gouda salad to start, followed by the zucchini pad Thai and the pasta special. The parking, well it's pearl street so best of luck finding a meter lol. The decor is nice, modern-contemporary with plant aspects in respect to their name. Ample seating, and a cool outdoor patio area for a nice summer or sunset dinner. I've had their Jamaican Jerk Tempeh, (not sure if they serve anymore) there menu might be seasonal and change according to local ingredients (don't quote me or hold me to that lol).
