Around 3-3.5 stars This was our first meal in Paris after arriving by train. Our hotel front desk recommended this place. It was very clean inside and looked like a typical French brasserie. The server was friendly and spoke English. Our food arrived fairly quickly. Everything was fresh and hot just boring. I ordered steak with pepper sauce and it was just ok nothing too special. Overall you can tell that they are on cruise control. Are there better brasserie around, yes for sure. Are there worse ones? I'm sure that's also a yes. So that's where this lands somewhere around a 3-3.5. Positives are clean, English speaking staff, English menu, and reasonably fast service. If you are hungry and nearby I think it's fine. Anyone staying on Av. Victor Hugo will quickly find the circle where there are quite a few lovely places, along with the traditional FranPrix, Drug Store and Bakery. We came to the circle hungry in the late morning and came upon Le Victor Hugo - small welcoming from terrace - and yet the side of the building opens to reveal more indoor and outdoor accommodations. Very lovely and intimate for certain. We got right to business and were greeted with the most adorable staff, over several Petit déjeuners - we came to love the avocado toasts, the omelettes (bacon and cheese) and of course the incredible Cafe American. They also offer croissants, and pain au chocolate - along with other breads. It's not inexpensive - as many of the places around a circle would be expected - but for the breakfasts we have enjoyed there it's become popular with our small group. read more

I loved this bistro! Lots of locals (not touristy), outdoor eating, friendly waiters and delicious food! I started with the shaved artichoke and Parmesan that had a lemony vinaigrette and then the veal Milanese for my main. Sooooo good! I wish I had enough room for dessert! I chose this place thought it would be nice because of its French menu. It was the only one of the three restaurants on this circus serving snails. Unfortunately I had worst experience in my life, I had two stinky snail. With that doubt, my friend also had one and it was stinky too. It is out of expectation but I tried to tell the waiter. He certainly denied and said cook another three for us, but come on I only want the chef to know they are not serving fresh snails and there must be problem in my dish. With a disappointing heart I had my entrecôte. It is so tough to cut and I didn't have a steak knife. My friend ordered a deep friend crispy chicken filet. Too thick! I should have not expected a nice meal at busy traffic crossing. It is never wrong that this type of restaurant is only suitable for a drink, definitely not food. I should have learnt. read more

When I arrived in Paris , my friend forgot they had a dinner party for work so they could not pick me up from the train station. They had me get a cab and wait for them at Cafe Victor Hugo. So me and an American who speak little French is whisked away to Cafe Victor and I arrive with a big ass duffle bag that says USA on one side and MIAMI on the other. I take a seat on side and my bag is so big it takes up another chair. Needless to say I did not blend in with the upscale 16th district Parisians there. No matter - My waiter Yves spoke to me in French and I tried to order in a French like language ..lol even though the had English on the menu for all items. Hey I am in France - try and speak French. I had croque mamdam like Nicholas and beer american ( Bud ) followed by a few glasses of wine several by my new Parisian friends who obviously were regulars there and wanted to hear about my travels. ooooohhhh Le Victor Hugo! I like this place. I have been here twice as it seems like the least posh restaurant on place victor hugo. After a long day I was walking by and just had to stop by. Le Victor Hugo, is right on the place, its a small place and I have only seated outside. The inside looks like a cool cozy little bar, but might be a little to tight for me. Outside is great, they have a few different spots you can sit at, so there is a lot of room. I went with a croque madam (8.5€) + frites (5€) + Belgium beer (8€). Now, the only kicker was that I thought the Croque Madame came with fries, instead it was a 5€ side. The croque and frites were really good, I thought they were perfect. (for those that don't know - croque madame is a ham & cheese sandwich + a fried egg on top) A little pricy for what you get, but... its Paris right? Priceless. I will likely be back here at some point, probably when I crave another croque madame. read more

First breakfast place in Paris that I visited. I was tired, jetlagged, and sick from running a half marathon in Dublin, Ireland a few days before. I wanted FOOD! Good thing they have a few breakfast options. I ordered the option that costs 18 Euro. I think it had two beverages, a pastry, and a main breakfast dish. I ordered orange juice and hot chocolate, a chocolate croissant, and I think some sort of egg or sandwich with a salad and sausage. It was a lot of food, but worth it! The service was great. Our waiter spoke good English and was nice to us. Would I return? Heck yes! Note: I was hyper-sensitive to cigarette smoke, especially since I was sick, but beware because it is everywhere. We walked here every morning for a hot croissant, un cafe and chocolat chaud. The personnel were warm and welcoming. They were very patient with my limited French. The food was fantastic and the prices were on par with other restaurants in Paris. We came for dinner and found the same great service and food. My friends and I went to this place after finding it on yelp, nearby our apt in Paris. The food was absolutely amazing, the service as well. This place was chosen by a local friend who was driving as a quick spot to get a coffee where he could wait on the circle in the car. Unfortunately, my experience typifies the stereotypical critique of French cafés. We got our espresso with complimentary pretzels, popcorn & olives. And ordered a bottle of sparkling water. When it was served, the waiter brought out a glass with ice, which we didn't want. So he dumped the ice on his tray and ignored us the rest of our time. Since there were only 10-15 tables, his shunning of us was noticeable, ignoring my attempts to pay. Then, when I I finally got his attention, he overcharged me by $5 euro. When I brought it to his attention, he acted embarrassed and handed me a bill from his wallet. I think its a shame that the server ruined the experience. However, I did notice the sous chef chopping fresh potatoes when I passed the kitchen proving that even in a small, common cafe, they use fresh produce. read more
