La Vie En Rose - Food Review Le Rendez-vous Restaurant, Tucson
The award-winning restaurant Le Rendez-Vous has been Tucson's icon for French dining for nearly 40 years. But there is much more to this culinary destination than earning the title of Tucson's premier French restaurant and serving authentic French dishes. The fuchsia bougainvillea climbing the burgundy awning along the façade greets you in the parking area. Inside, the main room's romantic and relaxed formality celebrates the delicious menu, whether indulging alone or sharing the journey with your beloved or a group.
A special occasion is not required to visit France in Tucson. The aromas from the kitchen impersonate the rich and creamy voice of Edith Piaf, the little sparrow, and deliver La Vie En Rose, transporting you to France as the cordial staff points you to your table.
Simple things such as the breadbasket denote attention to detail. The warm slices of French baguette are blessed with the crunchy crust of freshly baked bread. The creamy butter spreads evenly. I appreciate this. Cold butter is as unappealing as finding a fly in the soup.
The Small Plate Menu, priced at 9 dollars per item, allows you to sample tapa-style delights. I ordered the Pan Seared Scallop with white bean fricassee. The scallop was perfectly seared and juicy on the inside, and the white bean fricassee delivered the taste and texture of a rich pottage, providing a playful contrast with the sweetness of the bivalve mollusk. The Brie En Croûte, a crispy and golden puff pastry filled with brie and served over pear butter with thin slices of pouched pear, is one of the finest treats my traveled tongue has experienced. It elevates baked brie to its highest octave. The escargots with garlic butter served in a small demitasse cup and accompanied by crostini present an exquisite alternative for escargot lovers who want a taste but do not want to order the appetizer size. The white cream herb broth mussels sprinkled with garlic were fresh, juicy, creamy, and utterly delicious. Kudos for cleaning them properly. I found no beards!
I will return to taste the additional items on the Small Plate Menu, including the Seared Salmon served with lemon, aioli, and dill crostini, the Mini Wellington Truffle Demi, the Roasted Beets Au Chevre, and the House Pâté.
The Small Plate Menu is perfect for a Libra who balances romancing the butter and watching the cholesterol intake, worships quality and flavor, and cares less about quantity. Paired with Blanc the Blancs sparkling wine, a glass of France, or a Blonde Cosmopolitan, you will find yourself smiling with your entire body after each bite. Larger than hors devours, these small plates offer a culinary feast to your palate and can be shared, although I wouldn't.
After appetizers, enjoy the classic French entrée menu featuring all the favorites, Soupe À L'oignon Gratinée, the classical baked French Onion Soup topped with cheese medley, Châteaubriand with Béarnaise Sauce, Saumon Le Rendez-Vous, pan-seared Scottish salmon with an orange basil cream sauce, Boeuf Wellington, Canard Montmorency, roasted duck with bourbon-soaked cherries and many other charms. You will be under a spell and may even moan or cry out of joy.
Know that you will regret leaving without tasting a fabulous dessert. Although not flambeed at the table side, the Crêpes Suzette transports you to the Mystery Room at Antoine's Restaurant in New Orleans. One bite of that delicate thin crêpe immersed in beurre Suzette (butter and sugar, tangerine or orange juice, zest, and Grand Marnier) sauce will invigorate your taste buds and enrich your soul. The same can be said about the Crème Brûlée, Pithivier (almond pastry creme, puff pastry), the syrup-soaked, soggy, and boozy delight, Baba Au Rhum, or the spellbinding Grand Marnier Souffle.
I guarantee you will leave Le Rendez-Vous as a better person. For an upscale restaurant, prices are comparable and even more reasonable than other fine dining destinations in Tucson.
Bon Appétit!
