The surcharge was not a tip to our fine waiter, it is obviously just a way to scrape more money from customers. Our waiter said management was had been trying it out for the last couple of weeks to see if they could get away with it. Horrible business decision that should be reversed immediately. The atmosphere is elegant, familial, warm and inviting. We sat at the bar until our table was ready and enjoyed cocktails made by Aaron - he was phenomenal!! He made me one of the best espresso martinis I've ever had. Our server was Erschell and what a delight he was. He was so knowledgeable about the entire menu and gave outstanding recommendations. Now onto the best part. The food. There wasn't one bad item on the menu. But I have to place extra emphasis on the tuna tartare. MY WORD. The flavors of the avocado, tuna, cucumber and caviar all sitting in a bed of sweet yet savory chili sauce were immaculate. Literally fireworks in my mouth. A culinary masterpiece. I will come back for this one item very soon. For dinner we shared the branzino which sits on a bed of lettuce, served with pickled vegetables, lime and coconut sticky rice. The server recommended making miniature fish tacos with the lettuce wraps and I mean wow. Once again, the flavors were unmatched. Pretty middle of the road for me. Le Colonial, is without a doubt, a stunning restaurant: the mood lighting is set, the white tablecloths add to the elegant atmosphere, and it is in Buckhead Village after all. The food however, was good, but not necessarily great. (I should preface this by indicating that I am a huge southeast Asian food connoisseur.) While I understand that this establishment provides an elevated Vietnamese food experience-- as opposed to traditional fare-- I don't think that anything that I ate was very memorable. I dined here almost 3 weeks ago, we ordered three dishes to share (but I cannot remember one of them). The ceviche was nice, quite spicy for Vietnamese food. The fried snapper, which was $125 market price, wasn't my favorite. It literally just tasted like lightly fried fish. It would've been better if they were a little bit crispier and maybe sprinkled with tamarind salt or something to really boost the flavor. My favorite thing about my dinner experience was the tamarind cocktail that they had which was absolutely delicious. They have a side room which is blisteringly hot, and can squeeze in about 30 people, but the communication between the kitchen and wait staff meant that food was sent out before we were restart, then removed and brought back. I went to Le Colonial for the first time with friends on a Saturday evening. Service was excellent and the decor was beautiful. I ordered the duck with bao buns and pickled vegetables. The duck was tender and the sauce it came with was very good! The bao buns were also very good. I just wasn't a fan of the pickled vegetables which couldn't be substituted sadly. On a Friday, all tables were reserved for dinner but the restaurant has a nice lounge area with tables and the same dinner menu that is first come first serve. We were able to pick a table for 2 in the lounge area immediately, and an attentive server took our orders soon after. The drinks tasted great. When I think back on all the ways I've described food over the years, I'm not sure I've ever used the word unbelievable. But the food here truly is--unbelievable in the best way. It's some of the most flavorful, creative, and flawlessly executed cuisine I've ever had. Every dish was both unique and perfectly crafted. The pork ribs were incredibly tender and packed with rich flavor. We also ordered the spring rolls, and they were hands down the best I've ever tasted. The wrapper was crisp without being too hard, and subtly seasoned in a way that elevated the entire dish. The ingredients inside were perfectly minced, and the use of mint was the best I've ever seen--it complemented the flavors beautifully without overwhelming them. I can't recommend the spring rolls enough. I also tried the spicy beef salad, and it ended up being my favorite dish of the night. I don't think I've ever had a spicy salad before, but now I wish I had. The spice level was bold but balanced, adding depth without overpowering the other flavors. The beef was juicy and tender, and the sweet chili and agave dressing was unlike anything I've had before--definitely a new favorite. I only wish I could buy a bottle to take home! For my entrée, I chose the duck, and it was nothing short of exceptional. The portion was generous, the skin was crisp, and the meat was perfectly cooked. The tea rub on the outside was an inspired touch, pairing wonderfully with the duck's natural richness and adding a layer of complexity to the dish. Such a great fusion of Vietnamese and French food! This upscale dining restaurant has a patio, a restaurant, lounge, and even a separate party room that you can rent out. Definitely not a place that you can come just off the street as it does have adress code. We came in for lunch on a Saturday and it wasn't as busy as expected. The two of us ended up splitting three small plates and one large plate and it was just enough food! We even had room for dessert. For small plates, we did yellowfin tuna tartare, sesame beef ravioli, and beef carpaccio salad. The yellowfin tuna tartare was not very big but had delicious flavor! It even came with banana chips giving it that extra crunch! The sesame beef ravioli was definitely not what I thought in my head but delicious in my mouth. Imagine Asian flavors with ground beef rolled in rice paper and steamed. More like a burrito than a ravioli. Came with three raviolis and generous amounts of sauce. The beef carpaccio was huge! It came with a full salad on top of the thinly sliced beef. I loved the crispy onions that came on top of it giving that that great crunch and flavor. We split the banh mi sandwich and it was probably my favorite thing we had had all day! The meat was so well flavored and even half a sandwich was plenty for one person. It came with additional banana chips and a small side salad. For dessert we did decide to do the chocolate cake and the presentation was great with a Tableside flambé! I thought I had reviewed L Colonial, but apparently not. We were four for Saturday lunch. The main dining room is beautiful, Sophia our waiter was very helpful, and it was quiet enough that we could actually have a conversation without shouting. The restaurant claims to be French-Vietnamese. In fact it was kind of fusion Asian food (lots of Thai influences) modified for people who don't want to go to a Vietnamese restaurant in a strip mall. Think of it as entry-level Vietnamese food for people who have never eaten Vietnamese food. Two of the diners have various food allergies and were able to find selections that allowed them to eat without concern. My wife and I split tuna tartare which was lovely but overpriced, papaya salad (You can find better at dozens of store front restaurants all over the city), and some kind of eggplant that was the best thing we ate. We tried so many things on the menu, and even the worst dish (green beans) would still be a 4/5 stars. The beef ravioli was the absolute best dish; rice noodles with very flavored beef and it's so soft! The chicken curry was a close second - very flavorful and chicken is tender. Third was the pork and shrimp rolls which were crispy, delicious, and paired well with the sauce.
