TLDR: Small portions, very slow service, expensive, salty food, staff mixed up who ordered what leading to folks not getting their drinks and food. Went there on Saturday night with a big group, about 20 people and were seated promptly. I noticed that our group appeared to be the only folks in the restaurant which I thought strange for a Saturday evening. The server was nice and friendly. Unfortunately, that's where the positive things end. The first issue, it took the staff over an hour to bring out the drinks from the time we ordered them. It's not like they waited until all the drinks were done either, they brought them out one by one, some came out fast and some people were on their 2nd-3rd drink before others even had their first brought to them. In addition to taking a long time, when they brought my my drink it wasn't what I ordered. On the topic of them bringing out our orders, every time staff came to the table they never went right to who ordered it, they'd shout a name or the drink type etc and expect you to claim it. Instead of being able to talk to friends and have servers bring you what your ordered in timely fashion it's like you're on edge waiting to hear what item the staff is bringing out so you can finally get your drink only to double check it as being the wrong one. This restaurant has no idea how to operate properly and no care towards providing guests with a smooth, pleasurable dining experience. Next issue, the food portions were small, didn't taste good, weren't presented well, but high in cost. You'd think for expensive food with small portions, they'd learn to use more than a heavy dose of salt as seasoning. You don't get anything for your money here. I genuinely think you'd get better Thai food at almost any other entry level restaurant around the metro and in terms of fine dining, there isn't anything "fine" about this experience. Best meal I've had in a while. I went for lunch and it wasn't busy at all. Both the food and service were excellent. They also have an awesome mocktail menu. It's a very chill vibe. They validate the valet parking (only) which is always a plus in Buckhead. I will say, they don't have lunch menu prices, so keep that in mind if you're looking for something lower-priced for lunch. I came to Nan Thai for a date and I really loved all the dishes I tried!! For appetizers, we had the octopus lemongrass salad and toong tong, both of which I found super delicious. The toong tong are crispy dumplings, and they came paired with a sweet chili dipping sauce, and the octopus lemongrass salad was very refreshing, we chose a regular spicy level. I had the Khao Mok Ped duck leg dish, which I strongly recommend, it was very tasty, rich, and filling. The ambience was a nice, dark moody vibe, but with enough lighting to still read the menus. Came here with my husband a couple weeks ago. This is the old Chai Yo location - restaurant looks the same but menu is slightly different. Elegant atmosphere. I ordered the duck at the recommendation of the server, and it was perfection. I loved combining the duck meat with the fresh cucumber and rice - made for a super tasty and flavorful combination of different textures that I still think about weeks later. I'll definitely go back. My husband ordered a deconstructed green curry with sautéed veggies on the side and a papaya salad. He was very happy with the portions and the flavors. The broth was good but the dish was overall ok. It seemed like the lobster was just kind of put in there so the dish can seem more expensive. There were 2 options for the entrees. The braised short ribs and a seafood pasta. The braised short ribs were pretty good. The broth mimicked the soup dish. The seafood pasta was not seasoned at all.. it was very disappointing. Even done salt would have been nice. The dessert was probably my favorite dish. The decor was nice. The ambiance has its moments but the power was going out so there were these awkward moments of us waiting for it to come back on. The service was slow. This is not to speak for the whole restaurant. The ambiance was fine, but with so much space, I couldn't understand why everyone was seated directly next to the party table when there were available tables away from the birthday party. It said 6 pieces but it really meant 6 PIECES of one basil roll, rather than 6 basil rolls LOL. Tasted fine but it's pretty much just one (1) cut up Vietnamese spring roll for $10. The Chilean Seabass however was pretty good. The filet was very juicy and tender on a bed of fried rice. My family and I have dined at Nan Thai in midtown Atlanta a few years ago and were impressed with the food, atmosphere and respectfulness of the management and the staff. This branch in Buckhead is far from it. Nothing impressed me about this restaurant. The food presentation was what you'd get at a cheap Chinese restaurant, the behavior of the servers were too casual and the atmosphere was cheaply designed. None of that can justify the high prices they charge. I has scallops with Massaman curry sauce. It was 3 scallops with a thin watery sauce that was extremely sweet. Nothing like a curry sauce that I am used to at better Thai restaurant. My wife ordered chicken. She took two bites and said it tastes off. One of our guests had lamb and was totally unhappy. There are several nice restaurants with walking distance from this restaurants. This will be my last visit to Nan Thai of Buckhead. read more

In our most recent visit, we got the papaya salad. Quite simple--but tasty and fresh. Was great to start off with it. Also got the wagyu beef dish and the vegetarian golden triangle. I would recommend both. The golden triangle offers a variety of vegetables (and tofu) in a savory sauce that makes it quite appealing. Is it the fanciest dish ever? No. But I enjoyed it. I had a terrible experience at Nan Thai restaurant last weekend and I will never go back. I call these types of restaurants disposable restaurants, you try them once and you will never go back. Here is why, Quality of food: -The spring rolls were tasting off. They tasted like some chemicals, bleach or something similar. -The chicken dish was like what you would get at Panda express for 1/4 of the price. - The mediocre Massaman sauce with the seafood was nothing like what I had experienced at Tamarind or Nan of Spring Street which were supposedly owned by the parents of the present owner . The Scallops and Massaman sauce at Tamarind was absolutely one of the best foods I had ever had in a restaurant. Service: -The service was too casual . the server didn't even bother to tell us the specials. We found out there were specials when he was explaining them to another table. - our server presented the check while our dishes were still not cleared. Overcharging: -The chicken dish was at $26 on the menu but we were charged $28 on the bill. -The server said we could have any protein with Massaman sauce. I ordered shrimp and scallops with Massaman sauce and we were charged $58 for 2 shrimps and 3 scallops! I know the times have changed and with younger generation taking over we can never go back to the time that Tamarind and Nan of Spring St. treated the guests like kings and queens. But this much mediocrity with greedy prices is not acceptable. I thought it would be fair to make the management of the restaurant aware of these problems directly instead of using Yelp and other platforms. So I sent an email on their website. Beautiful restaurant with a delightfully relaxed upscale atmosphere. The bar is gorgeous and meticulously maintained. The lunch menu is a manageable size with many vegan options. The lobster coconut soup is a silky smooth broth presented in an oversized bowl. It is filled with succulent lobster and mushrooms, so be sure to dip your spoon to the bottom to enjoy all of the flavors. The shrimp and chicken dumplings are wonderful. They are not tricky to pick up with metal chopsticks for a novice, but a lot of fun to try. The dipping sauce that accompanies the dumplings is addicting and a bit of a spicy zing. The basil rolls are fresh and perfectly bite sized. The peanut sauce that accompanies the rolls is a bit thick and doesn't adhere to the rolls very well; however, although probably frowned upon, the rolls are fantastic in the dipping sauce from the dumplings. For the entrees, the Neau Panang beef tips were melt in your mouth tender and the flavors were deep, yet delicate. The Khew Wan Kai is spicy and wonderful. The chicken pieces were so tender. Another amazing meal at Chai Yo! We decided on Chai Yo for Christmas dinner because it is one place all three generations love. The wine list is a hit - the Pinot gris is my mom's fave and the Thai tea makes my daughter's heart sing! Here's Chai Yo Modern Thai in a nutshell: Really good Thai food, outstanding service, posh ambiance, expensive (it's in Buckhead, what do you expect?). This isn't your typical casual Thai restaurant or hole-in-the-wall, but one of the more upscale Thai restaurants you're going to find in the Southeast, with a modern take on traditional dishes. Chai Yo opened in January 2018. It's part of what's now known as "The Tamarind Group" of Atlanta Thai restaurants, owned and operated by the Niyomkul family. Charlie Niyomkul is the head of the family. I remember when the family only had one restaurant, Tamarind Thai Cuisine, on 14th Street in Midtown. When 14th Street expanded, Tamarind was forced to close/move. It relocated to Colony Square and reopened as Tamarind Seed. Subsequently, Charlie's wife, Nan, opened Nan Thai Fine Dining on 17th Street near Atlantic Station. After that, their daughter, Deedee, opened Tuk Tuk Thai Food Loft in south Buckhead and most recently, Chai Yo. I've eaten at all of the family's restaurants and they are consistent in terms of good food and elevated, swanky atmosphere. Sophisticated Thai is their style. Chai Yo is hidden from street view. It's in the same development as King + Duke, Seasons 52, and Umi/Himitsu. They all use the same valet service. It costs $2 plus tip, so bring cash. Use the valet and get your valet ticket stamped by Chai Yo. Don't self-park unless you want to pay more. Chai Yo is on OpenTable so book your reservation on there for free and earn dining points you can use towards discounts at other restaurants or an Amazon gift card. For parties sizes greater than four, you'll have to call and submit your credit card info. If there are no-shows, the restaurant may charge you $30 for each no-show. That's what I was told by the hostess on the phone. If you're booking for a large group and still want your OpenTable points, just book for four on OpenTable first, then call the restaurant and they can add people to your reservation. The restaurant is gorgeous. They did a fantastic job with the interior design, from floor to ceiling. Open kitchen, beautiful bar, indoor-outdoor seating, banquettes, cozy U-shaped booths, enclosed patios. This is a great date spot. They have an eye for detail, down to the unique silverware and fancy, tri-fold menus. Unlike most Thai restaurants, Chai Yo has a relatively abbreviated menu. During our visit, there were only about 20 dishes to choose from at dinnertime. Small plates were priced at $9-16 each, soups $10 and $14, main dishes $21-34, and chef selections $29-36 (market price for the snapper basil). They also have a sizable drink menu. We saw a dozen cocktails ($11-15) along with bottled beer, cider, sake, wine, and champagne. The best dishes were the octopus lemongrass salad, wonton ravioli, pork belly, and drunken noodles. They were phenomenal. I highly recommend all of them. The other dishes were okay to good. Terrific presentation overall. If you love mushrooms like me, you'll love the wonton ravioli. Strong mushroom flavor. The pork belly is so rich and delicious, it just melts in your mouth. On the pad Thai, I thought the fluffy crepe was a really neat touch. If you order the (bone-in) duck noodle curry, be sure to mix everything together like bibimbap. Dined here with a sizable group of coworkers on a Monday night, and we were seated in a semi-private area (almost its own room) of the restaurant. My first impression was the wow factor of the interior - classy, tasteful, very fitting of Buckhead. Chef DeeDee Niyomkul is award-winning and known by many for beating Bobby Flay. No surprise there, as everything was great (but I'll get to the food in a bit). Our server was Donovan and he was fantastic - friendly, quick, helpful, never missed a beat the whole night. We started off with drinks (I got the Chiang Mai Mind cocktail, which was refreshing and looked super pretty / instaworthy) and a bunch of appetizers for the table. I didn't get to try each appetizer, but the ones I had were all good and beautifully presented (octopus, crispy spring rolls, and steamed dumplings). For my entree, I chose the Chilean sea bass, which was served with crab fried rice and bok choy. Solid entree choice (but honestly not the best Chilean sea bass I've ever had). Of course we couldn't say no to dessert, and I opted for the coconut cake, which was a nice choice (maybe a tad too sweet). The Thai iced tea creme brûlée looked like an interesting option as well, although I had a taste and it tasted more like pumpkin to me rather than Thai iced tea. Love that Donovan didn't hesitate to bring us seconds of our cocktails when he noticed us running low. All in all, a beautiful, posh, tasty choice for Thai cuisine in Atlanta.
