    Tuna Tartare
    Jason M.

Good service I don't know if the majority of people who rate this place don't know what good service is. The service is an A Marion took care of us and was there anytime we needed something. My definition of good service is: not having to Crain your neck to look around and wait for someone to come over. If you have a dirty glass or something is wrong they will take care of it immediately. Their Tuna Tartare is prepared differently than most. Instead of lemon zest, they use ginger and put sauce inside which throws off the entire dish. I would recommend that the restaurant gives customers a heads up to the difference in preparation. Rating: B- I had the Beef Bourguignon which was pretty good. It came out medium well (I didn't see any pink inside). Rating B Overall rating B+ Service rating: A (no complaints of level of service) Food rating: B (average) Atmosphere: pleasant

Le Charlot is a french restaurant that is on the main drag in Southampton, and we decided to stop in for a light bite after doing some shopping in the area. The whole restaurant was open, and we had the choice to sit wherever we wanted, so we picked a spot in the back which was very comfortable and able to see the front door, felt safe eating here. We ended up getting The Quiche and some fries/salad, and I got the French Onion Soup. The waiter was okay, french accent, and was attentive to the ingredients in the quiche, since my gf can only eat organic eggs, which they were able to accommodate. The Soup was delicious. Hot, Onion'y, Cheesy, and they brought some bread chips as well for me to have with it. Expensive spot, but decent food, worth a try.

The short waiter with the ponnytail made us wait over 90 minutes for an order, and then proceeded to rudely tell us to leave.

To start off with the service was superb. The ambience was really lovely, cozy, quiet and just lovely I started off with the escargot which were exquisitely delicious. My husband and I came in around 6 pm on a Sunday evening for dinner (booked ahead of time) and the place was pretty empty. We were seated right away and our server was great, super friendly and helpful with what to order. There are a ton of specials off the menu which sounded amazing, so we both ordered two specials with Hake (~$46 each). Both were delicious, fresh and innovative takes on fish. I wish they had more of the specials listed because it was hard for us to keep them all straight. I started with the fondue for one which was tasty and fun but I would have preferred if it also came with cornichons and that the potatoes weren't fried (it was really heavy and oily with cheese and fried potatoes). Drinks were pretty weak for $26, and the bartender actually forgot to add champagne to one of our French 75s, lol. He did remedy it, though. We split the ice cream sandwich for dessert which was a little strange but tasty. All in all the food was very flavorful but at the price point I probably wouldn't come back. I guess you can get away with that in the Hamptons, even in the off season!

We were still greeted with kindness and a generous pour of complimentary Prosecco to start the celebration! We both decided on the Five-Course tasting menu and added the wine pairing. For $84/pp including a wine pairing...wow. And the portions were NOT skimpy at all. Complimentary WARM rolls with butter were presented. The brown seeded roll was very nice. I didn't care for the white roll--it was flavorless and really didn't have any distinct texture. First course, we both had the potato leek soup. OMG, it was delicious. Not overly creamy or goopy, but very nuanced and delicate. The hit of fresh-grated nutmeg was such a spot-on addition. We were both oohing and ahhing. Paired with a full-bodied Pinot Noir, which was great! Second course; husband had the beet salad and they replaced the goat cheese for him since he's not a fan. Beets were tasty, almost pickled? A nice dressing. He said he encountered one or two nuts that weren't great...but otherwise, loved it. Paired with a Rose. I do not like Rose, but I did taste it, and it was pleasant enough. Our fabulous server overheard me...and switched up my pairing for my main course without even me having to ask! I had the Escargot. WOW! First off, not in shells, so no fumbling at the table. The garlic/butter sauce was obscene. I really didn't want to eat more bread with such a big meal, but had to do one dunk-YUM! It was served in a crisped wonton wrapper (didn't see layered enough to be a pastry dough), squared off to create a cup--cute. Mine was paired with a Sauvignon Blanc for me. I tend to be fussy about my blancs...I only like them from Marlborough and have often found California's to be too sour. I'm not sure where this was from, but it was lovely! Then we both had the crab cake. SO good--hubby's favorite course. Packed with crab, barely any breading, just enough to hold its shape. Served with a basil oil and a basil aioli with a perfect hit of acid, and I think a pickled cabbage salad? SO good!!! This wine pairing was the only "miss" in our opinion. It was served with a Riesling. I get that the sweetness was meant to cut through the richness of the aoli, but for us, a Riesling is a better dessert wine...but it was a nice Riesling despite it not really working as a pairing in our opinion. Mains: I had the tuna medium rare. Cooked to PERFECTION and crusted with a hint of horseradish that really woke up the taste buds. As mentioned prior, our wonderful server swapped out the intended Rose and substituted a lovely Cab. PERFECT! Husband had the filet Mignon. I'm not a meat eater, so I didn't taste it, but he said it was cooked perfectly to his request of medium rare. I can't remember what wine was paired...but I think it was another Pinot Noir? Dessert...I was too full...and had a surprise planned afterwards, so I just opted for a dish of ice cream to have a spoonful. It was a bit icy. Not as luscious as I would expect at a French restaurant. He got the bread pudding served with vanilla ice cream. Oh. Dear. Lord. Well, I intended only a taste. It was SOOOO warm and chocolaty and decadent. We practically licked the plate clean! The service was incredible. The ambiance was quaint, cozy, and lovely. We both HIGHLY recommend. This is definitely added to our "must take friends" list. Fabulous!

When someone finally acknowledged us, we were just told to "wait." Ten minutes later, we checked in again, only to be told that our table was still occupied, with no real update or apology. Trying to make the best of it, we went to the bar to order a drink while we waited, but the bartender responded with an attitude and told us "the host will be with you soon" -- which had nothing to do with the fact that we were simply trying to get a drink while we stood there waiting. It was an unnecessary brush-off. We were finally seated over 30 minutes after our reservation, and placed our full order right away, hoping to make up for lost time. But then the cheese board took another 30 minutes to arrive. When we asked, we were told there was some kind of miscommunication -- again, no real ownership or urgency. Then came the main course. I ordered the bavette steak medium rare, but what I got was clearly rare and chewy, as the photo shows. When I mentioned it, the waitress did say it looked maybe on the rare side to her but also that Bavette can come out like that looking red - but Undercooked and poorly prepared is not a feature of the cut. We didn't want to wait longer so just ate some. To be fair, our waitress was kind and acknowledged the issues, but it was one of the most frustrating "high-end" dining experiences I've had. At these prices and with this reputation, you expect better service, better pacing, and food cooked properly. Instead, it felt like we were an afterthought the entire night.
