Fun and interesting park full of geological formations and features. The visitor center has some interesting artifacts and information about the land and people. It's $3 to shuttle to the top of the butte and back. You can bike from Sunriver and skip paying the parking fee. Bring a water bottle and change for the penny machine. Enjoy the volcanic scenery and don't forget the tree walk near the bike trails, has some great information and plenty of wildlife to spot.

Highly recommend this as a first stop after entering the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. There's tons of useful information and rangers available for questions or suggestions. There are restrooms available (clean with flush toilets) as well as a gift shop and passport stamps. We enjoyed the informational placards and movies available. Their topographical maps are always interesting to look at. There's are hikes starting from the visitors center as well, including the Trail of the Whispering Pines.

Nice visitor center with clean bathrooms and water refill. This was also the pick-up and disembark zone for the shutter service to the summit of Lava Butte. The cost was $3 per person. There was a nice area for the presentation regarding the park. Gift shop was nice. There were plenty of picnic tables and breaches for lunch.

This is the home of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. We waited at the gate, Well given a flyer and a time admission to the Butte and pointed in the direction of the lava fields. Behind the Lava Field was a spectacular view of the snow capped Cascades. This is one of the nation's newest national monuments, this 55,500 acre area seeks to preserve unique accessible volcanic features. Very knowledgeable park rangers small gift shop and clean bathrooms. A few displays a small lava field to work on and great views

If you're in the Bend area, don't miss out on this awesome volcanic park! Try to budget at least an hour if you want to just check out the visitor center and walk the short trail on the lava bed towards a picturesque lookout of the miles and miles of lava flow. Check the website to see if any ranger talks or guided tours are of interest, and of course if you have a bit more time, also check out the huge lava cave/tube across the highway (you'll want at least 1-2 hours for that part alone).

We learned all about volcanos! Interesting, informative, plus got to enjoy the views from the Top of Lava Butte. Worth a stop if you're in the area. Hiking trails around the rim at the top and also around the bottom. A shuttle takes you to the top for $2 each.

Never been to a lava museum/monument before and this place was really cool. Stopped here before trying our luck at the Lava River Mines / Caves and glad we did. The museum is small but full of information of what transpired over the last 7K years to create all these lava rocks. You can also walk through the lava as there are multiple trails of various length (mileage) where you can see up close the remnants of the volcano. Very cool for young and old!

Wow! Don't miss this gem if you are interested in visiting any of the lava attractions on the area. We stopped here by mistake because the lava caves parking lot (2 miles) down the street wasn't marked. They charge only $5 per car for the day and you get a map of all the different locations you can visit while everyone in the car is admitted for only that $5 parking cost. The visitors center have guided tours, exhibits, a store, and restrooms. What more can you ask for? The lava caves, just go right down the road for those.

what does it feel like walking amongst lava fields that was formed 7000 years ago???? this is where you find out. The park is amazing with beautiful trails and they offer trips to the edge of the volcano with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Where ever you turn your faced with incredible rock formations and bits and pieces of twisted tree trunks. Fun seeing chipmunks peeking out at the visitors. The museum and staff have stories to share and gifts to purchase. The park has plenty of parking and very well laid out.. highly recommend a visit when in the area.

We've lived in Bend for 14 years and Lava Butte is only about 15 miles east of us. Yet we had not visited there until this week when a friend from Arizona suggested we all go. Smart friend. Great place to explore. Spectacular volcanic outcroppings and mountain views and also trails of varying access and ease with lava caves in the mix too. OVERVIEW: The new Lava Lands visitor center, opened this year, is a good start point to gather info about the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, of which Lava Lands, Lava Butte, Lava River Cave are all a part. Those are the sites that are in the immediate area of the visitor center. Other points of interest in the Newberry National Monument area are roughly 25 miles south / southeast of the Lava Lands visitor center. They include Paulina Falls, Peak and Lake and also the Big Obsidian flow. If you're planning to visit those too, you'll want to make a full day of the exploration. We had a few hours to spare, so we limited our exploration to the visitor center and the sights immediately adjacent; Lava Butte and the Molten Lava Trail. The Lava River Cave is also in this same area and would have been an easy inclusion, but not a place the claustrophobic members of our merry band were inclined to want to visit. (Here's are tips if you do want to the lava cave; the surrounding area is warm, the cave is cold, take a warm jacket, wear study shoes, and you'll be required to carry two light sources with you.) VISITOR CENTER: Great facility with exhibits, information on the Newberry National Monument area, a spectacular view of the Cascade mountains looking across the lava flow from the patio at the back, and jumping off point to a couple of paved trails; Whispering Pines and Molten Lava. More good news, the new visitor center has added large bathrooms with flush toilets and running water. Rangers working at the visitor center were most helpful in providing additional information on the area.More good news is the entire facility, from parking lot through all elements are equally accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities. There is a $5 fee (as alternative National Park passes are honored) to enter the Visitor Center area which is the jump off point to access the Lava Butte cinder cone. LAVA BUTTE: . A short drive up an 8% grade cinder road, during busy times you'll be assigned a 30 minute visit interval so that the limited parking and space at the top of the Butte can accommodate the visitors there. (As example, we arrived at the visitor center gate at 10:45 a and were assigned a start time of 11:15 a for the drive up and a return time of no later than 11:45a.) There is a paved parking lot (with one accessible parking stall) at the top and a steep paved trail to the very top of the Butte and the old fire lookout there. Folks with small children in tow may find it helpful to know that there are NOT railings all the way around the top. Also accessible from the parking lot is a roughly mile, steep cinder topped trail that loops around the Butte. Even if you decide not to brave either trail, the views from the parking level are amazing. MOLTEN LANDS TRAIL: Trails immediately adjacent to visitor include Whispering Pines and Molten Lands. Both are paved, with the former being more level and in better repair and the latter being more steep and with some divots in the asphalt. (People who push strollers or use wheelchairs, as I do on trails, will know why that latter bit of info is important. ;-) ) We had time for only one trail and selected Molten Lands, which takes anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes to complete based on how much one wants to speed walk or saunter and gawk. OTHER TIPS: a) Right outside the entrance to the Lava Lands Visitor Center you'll find a drivable access road that is about 4 miles long and takes you to Benham Falls. Another beautiful place to visit. b) Road changes off of Highway 97 that are intended to make entry in and access out of the Lava Lands area easier were supposed to be completed by July 2011 but were still a work in progress as of last week. As a result, you can expect to have to make a significant detour if you're trying to access Lava Lands coming from the south or if you are trying to exit to the north after leaving Lava Butte.

This is one of two visitor centers for the Newberry National Volcanic Monument (the other is the Paulina center over by Newberry caldera - open seasonally). Lava Lands Visitor Center has a good museum with a lot of information on volcanoes. Helpful folks here. The volcanic monument itself has a separate Yelp page: https://www.yelp.com/biz/newberry-national-volcanic-monument-bend

This is an incredible area to walk trails and then drive 5 minutes down the road to the lava cave. The park rangers were incredibly friendly and helpful. Make sure to schedule a time to drive to the top of the crater, as it is a steep dirt road up to the top and not the most "hiking" friendly as there is no side path or sidewalk. It was a great visit and it was included under our "America the Beautiful" pass, so there was no entry fee.

On Memorial Day weekend Steve and I made a journey to Bend, OR to take in some sites and of course hit up at the local craft breweries. We realized pretty quick that multiple return trips are going to be required before we get the sense that we have seen everything that there is to see here. One place that we did manage to go to was the Newberry National Monument which is relatively close to Bend. We did some hiking along the Deschutes river and then went back to the actual visitor center and hiked around on a paved path in the lava field which was really cool! the hike through the lava field is quite manageable for most people. There is also a cave which is a lava tube but I did not go down in that because I hiked around in lava tubes before with the Ape Caves in Washington state and they are often quite cold to go through and it isn't always easy going with a flash light and a bunch of rock to step over all over the floor. I inquired if this cave was the same thing as a lava tube with someone that worked at the visitor center and she confirmed that it was. She also said that it is a type of thing where if you have been to one then it's more or less the same as any other. There is also the Lava Butte. At first I was confused if you could drive your own car up the butte or not. It turns out you need to take a shuttle up the butte in order to see it. You can also walk up the butte but on a hot day the lava rock gets very hot which in turn gets you very hot so if you choose to do this you should bring lots of water with you. The entrance fee into the park is $5 and if you want to go up in the shuttle it is $2 for round trip. For a National monument I think these are very reasonable rates and well worth your money.

I had a visited a bunch of breweries, but not all in any one region. For my most recent trip, I purposely tried to complete what I could. The Bend Ale Trail is a sponsored by the Bend tourism authority where you get stamps for each brewery visited either digitally or in a free passport book. I read there were prizes and artwork associated with each, so it made sense all of this was done out of the Visit Bend Oregon visitors center right downtown. It's easy to find, just a few blocks away from the river. They have mostly daily hours, making it convenient to drop in. If you're a first timer to the area, I recommend coming here on your first days, as they have a ton of free literature about the area including maps, activities, coupons, etc. They also have areas to sit, have pictures taken, plus advice and planning from the people who work here. I had mixed interactions with the people working here, but none were negative. Back to the Ale Trail - it's free to do, and worth your time if you're already visiting all the excellent breweries in the area. As you complete each of the seven regions, you bring in your passport and show it to receive a tasting glass and matching sticker with the key art. Once you complete all seven glasses, you get a matching wooden flight paddle! Even better, if you have a designated driver they can complete it too; but they'll earn a free branded Hydro Flask, another famous company headquartered in Bend. If you're visiting, it's worth stopping here to help plan your trip!

You can either grab a map at any of the participating breweries or download their app. I recommend you do both. The map as a souvenir and use the app to redeem for your rewards. The app is also very helpful in navigating the area and figuring out a course of action as you move from brewery to brewery. We of course started with the best beer in Bend at Boneyard. The Deschutes tour is another must. Crux makes some damn fine beer as well. I noticed for the most part, all the breweries in Bend are also restaurants as well. I prefer to keep my restaurants and taprooms separate so there's several breweries that I would have skipped if it weren't for the quest to visit all of them before we left town. The only negative to the whole thing was that 2 of the 16 breweries are about 20 miles away so you'll have to do some driving whether you want to or not. Since they're not in Bend, I'm not sure why they're included on the trail. Bridge 99 would have been a better choice to be included on the trail. The bottle opener and Silipint that you get from the Bend visitor's center for completing your passport are actually pretty neat and not throw away trinkets. The memories will certainly last a lifetime but it's always nice to get a little bit of schwag as well.

Overall, the company was spot on: easy booking, great communication (clear guidance on what to wear, where to be, and what to expect), and friendly, professional staff. Everything ran smoothly. That said, the experience itself felt a bit underwhelming for some of us -- particularly those with prior rafting experience. The three main rapids were billed as Class 3, but they felt pretty tame. I never really needed the foot holds while paddling, and the adrenaline just wasn't there. Additionally, the actual time on the water was only about 40 minutes, which felt short. While Sun Country's website does state "Trip Distance: 3 River Miles - Approx. 1.25 Hours," it seems that includes the 15-minute bus ride each way. With five boats in our group, perhaps our group moved faster than typical -- but either way, it would help if Sun Country clarified this more explicitly to set realistic expectations. On the bright side, our guide Dillon was perfect -- upbeat, skilled, and made the trip as fun as possible. He was a total pro and truly enhanced the experience. Jumping in the water always feels amazing and unless you're really concerned about not being able to get pulled back in the boat, you should show off your best back flip or bomb off the side of the boat and enjoy the refreshing dip. In summary: This is a fun, family-friendly rafting trip, especially for first-timers or younger kids. But if you've rafted before and are looking for something more thrilling or substantial, I'd suggest considering one of Sun Country's full-day or multi-day adventures instead. For the $79 per person (plus tip) price tag, it might also be worth weighing other fun options in Bend -- like a round of golf or a great meal.

Interestingly, our friends had tried to sign up the next morning but were told that "they'd see what they could do" because apparently Outriders only runs a limited number of 4x4's per trip. But, we found out later that day that they'd added one vehicle to the run and we were all good to go. Launch point was about a 15 minute drive from our friends in S. Bend. Just a turnoff on a forest trail off of the road, we spotted our guide and vehicles and got situated. Helmets were fitted, and we were given a clean set of instructions from Jason, our guide. And off we went. We'd signed up for the two-hour run and honestly, about 15 minutes in, I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy it. It was a bit of a ride, even given the soft suspension of the 4x4's. However, it's hard to deny the beauty of the surroundings and the smiles on our faces. We got up to the top of a bluff whose same I don't recall - Sugar Bluff, maybe? - and stopped for a bit. Jason gave us a status check and a bit of history and geography info. He's very informative, and easy to talk to, very willing to answer questions. From there we headed through the forest to our next stop, some lava fields. Again, a bit of history, very informational about the age of the rocks, and some interesting facts about plant growth in relating to the lava rocks age. All in all, this was a heck of a ride. Up and down, bouncing all around, noisy, only a bit of dust (we were lucky that day so be forewarned if you do this during a dry spell). There are other options available, we're seriously considering one of them for our next trip to Bend. Don't forget to tip your guide!

We were on the 10-4 tour and though we arrived at 9:45 no one directed us to have our kids take the bike test to see if they could go and nobody got fitted for bikes until everyone in the booking had arrived. Then, the large 10 am group was split into two smaller groups and if you were in the second group, you had to stand around for 20 minutes killing time to give the first group a head start. Why not just stagger the starts and have a 10 am and a 10:30? From a customer perspective this sort of sucked. This was billed as a Mountain bike ride with waterfalls and slides, but it was more like, walking/hiking to see 3 waterfalls and then a very mellow 3 mile single track ride to finish. It would have been nice to sort people by skill or interest (shorter vs longer rides) as we definitely had some gung ho dudes in our group and some newbies like me. Two of the waterfalls (at least) were accessible via McKay campground, which was a little disappointing. I thought we would be off the beaten path, checking out a little known spot, etc. Overall, our young kids, 8 and 10 enjoyed it and had fun. It was their first time mountain biking. I'd rate the ride and scenery 4 stars but the administration and organization only 2 stars (I'm a fan of efficiency and customer service) , hence my 3 star rating.

Was excited to go. Day of the trip for our group smoke was heavy. Hazardous in fact. His terms and…read moreconditions explain that you must show up no matter what the conditions. From there the group will vote and you must conform to the group decision. We were the only ones who showed up. The owner, Todd, decided after getting various voice messages the day before and the morning of, but he would cancel the event. Great! No pick up the phone and call your customers to make sure they don't waste their time and come all the way out to the top of a mountain only to find your experience was canceled. He claimed to have sent a text in the early morning hours. But I didn't get it until after the fact. Oh well, not great but not terrible. Did waste a lot of our time driving out there on a horrific weather day for smoke. Talked to Todd personally later, and he said "no problem I'll give your money back." Refund it all of it except our deposit, then wouldn't answer the phone or return multiple calls. In my final message I reminded him of his neglect as a business owner and a conscientious honest human. Told him repeatedly he needed to refund my deposit, as there were no terms or discussion of anything other than a full refund. Really annoying to deal with business owners who aren't conscientious. Really detracts from your credibility. So here's the review I promise to leave you if you went another two weeks without returning my calls again. Gave you four chances Todd.

We did the 4 hour, 4 brewery tour and it was just as educational and interesting as it was fun and delicious. Our guide, Jared, was very informative and made the day relaxing and interesting. He was helpfully conversational on many topics beyond just beer, but other questions about Bend and activities we were interested in. The brewery guides at each stop were gracious to have us and loved sharing their beers, which was nice to feel welcomed around the brewery scene. I highly recommend the Brewery Bus as a fun activity if you're in Bend looking to check out the awesome brewery scene. Beyond all that, you get to try a lot of great beer!
