Oregon is supposed to be trout fishing heaven so I wanted to expose my kids (8 & 9) to it and Fly and Field had a great guided package for 4 of us. We went a day early to the shop (the shop is beautiful) to get outfitted and the next morning when we met Braden at the shop we were ready to go. We followed him for about 45 minutes to the Crooked River and he had all the gear set up for us. We changed into our waders, grabbed the poles and headed down to the river. Wish fishing was always this easy! Braden was a great teacher. He explained the river and its contours, the fish and what they eat and how to effectively cast. Even my girls got it pretty quickly with his help. We only took one break for lunch and Braden had some great sandwiches and snacks for us but I really wanted to get back on the river. He saw that and let me know that I could take my time and that we would get a full day on the water no matter how long we took for lunch. I got 3 trout and a couple of white fish, my wife got 2 trout and my girls got 1. I could have stayed out there forever but the temp was dropping and the family went into the car so I reluctantly left before getting yelled at. Definitely a first class operation fun by people who really know their stuff. Hopefully next time I can do a Deschutes drift fishing trip next time!

Just got done with an incredible day on the Deschutes river with our guide, Adam! It was my friend's first time fly fishing and Adam made sure she not only had fun but caught a few fish as well! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great outdoor experience when visiting Bend. Big kudos to Adam for being super friendly and making this the highlight of our trip so far. He was very knowledgeable about the area (has been fishing up there his whole life) and definitely helped with untangling the many lines we crossed :) We will definitely be back!

My husband with one of the many fish we caught.

My husband and I recently traveled to Central Oregon to stay at the Brasada Ranch and received a recommendation from them for a fly fishing guide from Fly & Field Outfitters. We ended up booking a half-day excursion with one of their guides. We met our guide, Adam Sather, at a campground area about 20 minutes from the resort and walked down to a beautiful river. Adam was an excellent guide and taught us a ton about fly fishing and the flora, fauna, and other wildlife around the river area. He was picking up rocks and showing us the different "creatures" in the river that acted as food for fish. We went up, down, and across the river and caught tons of fish. Along the way, Adam entertained us with his vast knowledge. Last but not least, I had a physical disability from a recent illness, and Adam gave me the extra assistance and encouragement I needed to have a great day on the river. I highly recommend Fly & Field Outfitters for their excellent and easy service to set up and book an outing, especially Adam Sather, a top-notch guide.

    Rainbow!

Called kind of last minute and booked a half day for my son and I. We met our guide Eddie at a spot near Big Bend campground. Eddie has been a guide with the Company a long time and had a lot of local knowledge. I had been fly fishing once but my son had not. He was super patient and also moved us around on different parts of the river trying different casting techniques. The guide makes or breaks these adventures and Eddie was awesome!

My wife and I are both huge noobs when it comes to fly fishing. Prior to this expedition, my wife had never held a rod and I had only been fly fishing twice. We were visiting from out of state so I ended up choosing Fly and Field strictly based on their website and Yelp reviews. We settled on a half day and Glenn took us out. We met with Dave in the shop day-of and he got us squared away with waders etc. We then followed Glenn to the Crooked River where we had a great time. I caught 6 rainbow ranging from 4-8" and my wife caught a rainbow and a whitefish. Beautiful scenery and a great learning experience with Glenn. It wasn't a problem for us, but I have read other reviews in which individuals would get dropped off at the shop and not have a car to follow their guide to the fishing site. I don't recall and communication with Fly and Field regarding bringing a vehicle that will be able to go off road a bit. Again, didn't impact our day at all, as we have an SUV. But I think it would be worth noting for future clients so that they can be prepared. Not enough of an issue to demote to 4 stars though because we really had such a great time and would definitely make the same choice again! Thanks Glenn, Dave and Fly and Field

Went fishing with Griff yesterday...a float trip on the lower Deschutes. Griff was a great guide and helped us catch the cool/unique red banded trout. I am a beginner fly fisherman and my wife is intermediate to advanced. Griff was able to work with both of us, switching with ease between the two skill levels we had. The all day trip was productive for fishing and the scenery of the high desert was grand. We also stopped by the shop the day before to get some gear and local fishing advice. The store staff was super helpful and routed us to a couple nearby fishing spots.

    Crooked River fishing

We had a great day on the Crooked River guided by Eli. What a great adventure! Our group had one expert and three beginners (including myself). Eli got us all set up, led us to a great spot and gave beginners great instruction to get us up and running. The site was so beautiful and we all caught fish. I highly recommend Eli and Fly& Field. Everyone there was super friendly and knowledgeable.

Braden took my two young teenage sons and I out in the Crooked and patiently taught and worked with all three of us. Super time, super guy and breathtaking scenery. As we were leaving my youngest turned to me and said "Can we do this again soon?" Absolutely!!

    Josh holds my 19-incher

Fly and Field guide Josh Keown has fished and guided the Deschutes his entire life. The big fish cannot escape him! With his easy-to-understand instruction on casting for and landing a whopper trout, I brought in six hard-fighting Redbands in the Lower Deschutes. 10 - 19 inches! Josh is also a great conversationalist and a source on local wildlife, plants and geography.

Beautiful day on Crane Prairie! 24 fish caught and released!

Interestingly, our friends had tried to sign up the next morning but were told that "they'd see what they could do" because apparently Outriders only runs a limited number of 4x4's per trip. But, we found out later that day that they'd added one vehicle to the run and we were all good to go. Launch point was about a 15 minute drive from our friends in S. Bend. Just a turnoff on a forest trail off of the road, we spotted our guide and vehicles and got situated. Helmets were fitted, and we were given a clean set of instructions from Jason, our guide. And off we went. We'd signed up for the two-hour run and honestly, about 15 minutes in, I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy it. It was a bit of a ride, even given the soft suspension of the 4x4's. However, it's hard to deny the beauty of the surroundings and the smiles on our faces. We got up to the top of a bluff whose same I don't recall - Sugar Bluff, maybe? - and stopped for a bit. Jason gave us a status check and a bit of history and geography info. He's very informative, and easy to talk to, very willing to answer questions. From there we headed through the forest to our next stop, some lava fields. Again, a bit of history, very informational about the age of the rocks, and some interesting facts about plant growth in relating to the lava rocks age. All in all, this was a heck of a ride. Up and down, bouncing all around, noisy, only a bit of dust (we were lucky that day so be forewarned if you do this during a dry spell). There are other options available, we're seriously considering one of them for our next trip to Bend. Don't forget to tip your guide!

Overall, the company was spot on: easy booking, great communication (clear guidance on what to wear, where to be, and what to expect), and friendly, professional staff. Everything ran smoothly. That said, the experience itself felt a bit underwhelming for some of us -- particularly those with prior rafting experience. The three main rapids were billed as Class 3, but they felt pretty tame. I never really needed the foot holds while paddling, and the adrenaline just wasn't there. Additionally, the actual time on the water was only about 40 minutes, which felt short. While Sun Country's website does state "Trip Distance: 3 River Miles - Approx. 1.25 Hours," it seems that includes the 15-minute bus ride each way. With five boats in our group, perhaps our group moved faster than typical -- but either way, it would help if Sun Country clarified this more explicitly to set realistic expectations. On the bright side, our guide Dillon was perfect -- upbeat, skilled, and made the trip as fun as possible. He was a total pro and truly enhanced the experience. Jumping in the water always feels amazing and unless you're really concerned about not being able to get pulled back in the boat, you should show off your best back flip or bomb off the side of the boat and enjoy the refreshing dip. In summary: This is a fun, family-friendly rafting trip, especially for first-timers or younger kids. But if you've rafted before and are looking for something more thrilling or substantial, I'd suggest considering one of Sun Country's full-day or multi-day adventures instead. For the $79 per person (plus tip) price tag, it might also be worth weighing other fun options in Bend -- like a round of golf or a great meal.

At the mid-point we got out of the river for lunch and Ouzel set us up with a cooked meal from a local hotel in Maupin. Rylan had some fleeces for us to warm up and put us by a fire. We stopped at a few places along the river and at the last point got in the water. After getting the boat out of the water Rylan had some drinks for us and Ouzel had our car waiting for us after they shuttled it down.
