Our family had a fantastic experience with Deep Canyon. We were looking for a place where our "budding" fishermen could learn about fly fishing. Not knowing much about fly fishing, I called the shop at least 3 times before booking to ask questions which were always patiently answered. The booking process was smooth and Tye (owner) called me back to confirm and make sure everything was clear about the meeting place, fishing licenses, gear, etc. Our guide also called and texted the day before to see if we had any questions and to reconfirm the meeting place. We had 3 children (10, 10 & 8) in our group and our guide Dylan was amazing. He was super patient with the kids and got them very interested in fishing. I was expecting them to stop after an hour but the kids loved it so much, they fished for the entire 4 hours. Floated the Lower Deschutes with two different guides (Joe, Isaac) over the past several days and had a great time on both trips. While the river itself has some pretty arcane rules (e.g., no fishing from the drift boat, bank fishing from only one side of the river during the first stretch of the trip), it nevertheless makes for a fine trip: stunningly beautiful countryside, good to great fishing, not particularly difficult wading (though bring a staff if you're wading-challenged), good company, and a fine grill-cooked lunch by the river. The biggest surprise was that I actually quite liked the format of using the drift boat as a shuttle between wading stops (which I know some friends of mine don't like); while I'd surely have caught more fish if we were allowed to fish from the boat, standing in a drift boat all day is hard on the back and doesn't provide any exercise -- so getting out, wading a bit, hiking along the bank, and such keeps you moving. Wear waders, wear an SPF hoodie, bring a wading staff, a dry bag with sunscreen and an extra layer and rainshell, and leave the rest to them. read more

I have never fly fished, hubby has. We just spent 3 fantastic days fishing, camping and eating-OMG, meals like in a 4 star restaurant, including yummy desserts too. We visited Bend for the first time this summer and we were not disappointed. We booked two half day trips. The fist day was on the Fall River with Landon and my kids learned a lot about river fishing, Landon was very patient and a great teacher. The second trip we were upgraded to a half day boat trip with Jared, he was a wealth of knowledge about the entire area and put us on some beautiful fish at East lake. We were so impressed with the guides and DCO that we are planning a trip in June of 2019 with DCO again! Well you definitely don't want Jared... Unless you're hoping to catch a ton of fish, have a fantastic time, and learn a lot!!! I've fly fished a couple times in my life, all without success, and I improved 1000% in my time with him. Went out on a Father's Day trip with him. He found us great places to fish, showed us technique, cooked some great food, and was an all around great time and nice guy. We caught double digits between the myself and dad, and we normally end up skunked. Learned a lot more than I ever had. And had at least 3x the opportunity to hook fish that I failed. (I'm not sure how to blame him for that...) He had 1 cast that day. He got a great fish... Please don't hire him if you're looking for a bad experience. He won't give it to you. My son and I just did a Lower Deschutes float (can't fish from the boat in the section we were in so "stopped and hopped" at different spots) with Dylan yesterday and had a great time. The river is awesome, the weather was great, and Dylan was just a pleasure in all regards. We are middling fishermen at best, and Dylan was patient, positive and a great teacher. He put us on fish and we each landed 6-7 beautiful rainbows - and probably each missed an equal amount! Fantastic day out with Joe and Taylor -- our group of 7 (four adults, 3 kids) all caught multiple fish and really learned a ton about fly fishing. Jon took my father-in-law and I on on The Crooked River and showed us a great time. Jon is very patient, doesn't 'over-guide' and is just a pleasure to be around. I've been fly-fishing my whole life, and even I learned a thing or two. Most importantly, he worked with my father-in-law to help him understand the casting, mending, reading the water, ect. We booked a three day trip with these guys for our Fly club, Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club in San Francisco. There were ten of us plus 5 guides and 2 gear/cooks. A large group to say the least. First the guides were great. They had rods and flies and if they didn't have the right set up they were quick to rig one up. Caught trout and white fish. Fished all day for steelhead but like the say "the fish of a thousand casts" and I only got in 999, next year maybe. Two things after a hard day of fishing arrived at camp, the tents were set up, we slept on cots with nice thick mattress pads. Tents were big you could stand up in them! Breakfast, lunch and dinners all expertly prepared. Found out that one of the guys that started the company owns a catering company and gives the cooks all the meals already prepped. Food was good and I am talking BBQ'ed Try-Tip. fresh Brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes, peach cobbler for dessert. Outstanding. Hot breakfast, and hot lunch. They spoiled us. Secondly the Guides were all great, they knew the river, knew the history of the place really made the whole trip fun. All of us had a great time. Three years ago had a great experience with Deep Canyon Outfitters fishing on the Upper Deschutes. This time fished the Lower Deschutes and had an equally great time. Jordan was a terrific guide. Very knowledgeable on the ecology of the river, trout habits and habitats and fly fishing techniques. A great teacher as well. Really helped improve my technique (Remember kids, always set the hook downstream :-). Got on some really big fish. Bonus points for being a great river bank cook - burgers seared in cast iron. Me and my 3 buddies had Katie as our guide for the day and had the best time. Not only was Katie super cool and easy going but also was a total pro and knew her stuff, not to mention, between me and my 3 friends, we caught 11 fish!!! My uncle, brother, father-in-law, and myself went on a half day fly fishing trip in October. It was a good day, but there were some drawbacks. I wasn't going to write this review if the gentleman at the Confluence Fly Shop responded to my dissatisfaction, but I told him what happened and that was that. No apology or discount was given. For $400.00 for a half day and another $130.00 for the licenses and flies I was expecting something. Anyhow, I just received a "How are we doing?" email the other day from Deep Canyon Outfitters, so I thought I better YELP about it. The brochure and the guys in the shop I talked to said that transportation, drinks (water and sodas), and snacks would be provided. The morning of the trip, our guide suggested that it might be better to take our own vehicle(s) instead of cramming into his truck (I was expecting a van or something, not a crew cab pickup). Four big dudes in this guy's truck wasn't happening, so my brother offered to drive us, but we had walked from our hotels to the shop, so we had to walk back and get my brothers truck and rendezvous with our guide at a gas station. Once we were out fishing and enjoying the scenery, I forgot all about the vehicle thing... and then we started getting hungry. Guess what? No snacks. And of course we didn't bring any because the brochure and guys at the shop said they would be provided. Hungry and upset that we had to drive ourselves ended up taking away from an otherwise great day. Our guide was good. The weather was great. The scenery was amazing. The equipment worked. Did I get everything I paid for? No. Unfortunately, I did not. read more

Damien, Roger, and the rest of Deep Canyon Outfitters deserves every bit of this 5-star rating. My friend is getting married in a few weeks and wasn't into the typical girls/dancing/booze scene for his bachelor party. Instead I wanted to get the seven of us out into the wilderness for a 'man's weekend' before he ties the knot. Of the seven of us, only 2 had hunted before, and only 4 of them had never shot a gun. We were a group of rookies. Damien and Roger were patient, polite, and professional over the course of the half-day hunt. They gave my newbie friends an overview of guns/hunting, let us do some target practice at 'The Gallows' and then took us out in two groups. Damien was our guide... and it was honestly like walking around with a close friend, shooting Pheasant... very relaxing and pleasurable. He had several dogs and cycled through them to maintain fresh legs/noses. The other group had nothing but praise for Roger as well. I think that group (a little livelier) fit Roger's style better, so it was a good fit. I really think this was the highlight of the weekend... and definitely above expectations. Two of us are planning on putting together trips for our fathers/brothers. Their Lodge was immaculate and I hear the food is excellent (they use their own steers for beef)... we may try staying here next time we come. If you're looking for a hunt in Oregon and you don't want to rough it over by the eastern border... this is your place. Also, for the credential snobs... these guys are backed by Orvis as an official outlet of hunting/fishing/etc. Seriously, look no further than these guys. Thanks DC! read more

Great day fishing on the river with a guide. We wanted to go fly-fishing during our visit to Bend. We contacted Deep Canton Outfitters; our guide, Michael Divita, met us and we talked about our expectations for the day. We had several options including fishing from a boat, but we opted to fish on the river. Deep Canyon Outfitters provided all the gear and we asked them to arrange for our fishing license. Michael provided top quality comfortable gear - rods, waders, boots, flies. It was my first time flyfishing and Michael was a great teacher - he explained a little, got us out on the river and then taught us and corrected us as we fished. We learned a lot in terms of flyfishing technique and caught fish! This day made me want to fish more and I would go with Deep Canyon Outfitters again. read more

I found Deep Canyon completely by accident, and luck was on my side. I had a ball fishing the Upper Deschutes River with Deep Canyon guide, Katie. The river was beautiful and full of fat rainbows and brook trout which I never would have caught without Katie's help. She really knew the river, and how to fish it. We pulled some big, beautiful trout from that water. I've been fishing for years, but I also learned a few new tricks from Katie that have upped my game. Deep Canyon runs a superb preserve. Now, I would rather hunt wild birds, but that takes a serious amount of time and travel. Not ideal when you are trying to get a young dog on birds to help develop his bird drive. I tried other preserves in our area before coming to D.C., but now that I've hunted with D.C. they will be my go to preserve. They put a lot of work into their ranch to provide good and interesting bird cover and the views are amazing. It's a great setting and everyone their is very knowledgeable and helpful. If you are looking for a preserve hunt in Central Oregon, this is the one. I also have heard very good things about their fly fishing trips. read more

Damien Nurre and his boys at Deep Canyon Outfitters are top notch, whether you are fly fishing the Deschutes River with them, or knocking down birds with your Over and Under on their bird hunting preserve ranch. I have done them all, the excitement of flushing pheasants, hooking monster Steelhead on 3 and 4 day float trips, to day trips fishing for Rainbows. The fishing guides are al, experiences and helpful, and the guys relocating your gear every day, and setting up camp do an awesome job. And if you have never done a multi day float trip, this is the one to do, because the food is a s good as any 4 star restaurant. I went on two different multi-day trips, trout and steelhead, with the same guides this past year. Both guides, Branden and Jeremiah, would insanely helpful through each trip - always willing to take time to teach/instruct each angler on the trip. They were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and always happy to answer questions. Additionally, they collectively showed a genuine interest in providing whatever experience each angler was hoping to have. Whether providing helpful pointers, entertaining stories, and the ability to understand when/how to avoid crowding or overwhelming their clients--they were true professionals in every possible way. The entire experience, from scheduling, preparing, while on the trip or the days following, was awesome. I couldn't provide a higher recommendation for the guides and overall experience.
