With the exception of myself (I had gone once 4 years earlier in Utah) we were first time fly fisher-women. We followed Steve out to the Crooked River, got geared up and were ready to go! Wear some warm /wool socks because although you will stay completely dry, your toes may get cold. It was 100 degrees the day we went and it felt nice and cool in the water. Steve was patient, calm and adapted to each of our needs. He dropped tidbits of knowledge every time he came around to give us 1:1 instruction. We were hooking, netting and releasing fish on our own in no time. He taught us the competition technique, which I found much easier than the traditional method. When I fly fished in Utah I only caught a couple fish. Between the 3 of us, we must have caught at least 30 fish. We highly recommend fly fishing with Steve and Buried Hook Fly Fishing! Bonus: his little dog Lemont (Monty) tags along the whole way, trekking across the river with you, and is adorable. You will remember your time on the river for years to come.

We went a day early to the shop (the shop is beautiful) to get outfitted and the next morning when we met Braden at the shop we were ready to go. We followed him for about 45 minutes to the Crooked River and he had all the gear set up for us. We changed into our waders, grabbed the poles and headed down to the river. Wish fishing was always this easy! Braden was a great teacher. He explained the river and its contours, the fish and what they eat and how to effectively cast. Even my girls got it pretty quickly with his help. We only took one break for lunch and Braden had some great sandwiches and snacks for us but I really wanted to get back on the river. He saw that and let me know that I could take my time and that we would get a full day on the water no matter how long we took for lunch. I got 3 trout and a couple of white fish, my wife got 2 trout and my girls got 1. I could have stayed out there forever but the temp was dropping and the family went into the car so I reluctantly left before getting yelled at. Definitely a first class operation fun by people who really know their stuff. Hopefully next time I can do a Deschutes drift fishing trip next time!

He is a highly skilled yet personable and patient guide that will make your fishing experience one to remember. Our trip involved taking my 14 yo son out in his first fly fishing outing and he managed not only to keep this 24x7 video gamer interested but excited and enthusiastic about our day-long outing. He also somehow managed to spend several minutes to show me some new casting techniques while quickly moving back and forth dealing with snags, tangles and the many fish unhooking and picture duties. Our trip was along the Crooked River, a local hot spot which hosts both native rainbow trout and whitefish. They must do something special to these fish who fight like ones many times their actual size. These entertaining fish are plentiful but smart, so knowing the proper flies and techniques will save you many hours of trial and error here. This is a truly special area that is both spectacularly beautiful and highly productive for the skilled fly fisherman. I've been in several guided outings but few have rivaled the completely satsifying trip we did with Rivers Bend. If you plan to fly fish in the Bend area, you will regret not spending your day with Rivers Bend.
