I stopped in to ask if they carried any fly fishing books written by local authors because I wanted to learn more about the area before fishing. I was also planning to ask about booking multiple days of guided trips, so I was looking forward to meeting the staff. Unfortunately, my question was met with what felt like a dismissive attitude, and the interaction came across as unwelcoming. It wasn't the kind of customer service I expected from a local fly shop, especially one that also offers guide services. Because of the experience, I decided to leave without making any purchases or asking about guided trips. I hope this was just an off day, and that they work on creating a warmer, more welcoming environment for future customers. Great customer service is one of the most important parts of a successful guide business, and I hope they recognize the impact those first impressions. read more

If we could give this a six star we would! My dad and I booked a half day fly fishing trip with Bridget as our guide. From the moment we meet her we knew it was going to be a great day! She was so knowledgeable and personable! She made sure to check in and find out what our goal was for the day. For us, it wasn't about how many fish we caught but just learning a bit more to add to the knowledge we already had about the sport. The weather was perfect, we caught a few fish and she gave us tons of tips and tricks along the way. It was exactly what we had hoped for. We absolutely plan to bring my son back to fish with us next time so we have all three generations present. We will, without a doubt, be asking for Bridget again. read more

A great time! Mr. Fisher our guide was awesome! So patient and helpful with a couple of rookie. We had a great time!

I setup a half day lake trip for myself and son-in-law who doesn't fly fish. Our guide was Howard, who gave me a choice of East Lake for Kokanee or Crane Prairie Res for some larger trout. We chose the latter. Howard has been fishing the Lake for 30+ yrs and well versed in it's makeup. I trusted his expertise and we moved a lot and it paid off. It wasn't a hopping day but we caught a few. No one else was doing much. But what topped it off for me was my son-in-law hooking a 25" hog Rainbow. Howard was great coaching him how to cast and land the fish. He really wanted us to catch some fish and he worked hard to make it happen. Thanks Howard for a nice day on the lake. What a great place! Super knowledgeable staff, and a great selection of trout flies and other accessories for pro and rookie fly fisherman like myself. Josh was a terrific help on the first day, then my buddy Russ was a great help on day two. Day three I finally landed my first rainbow trout in Oregons beautiful rivers. This little guy's name is Eddie and he was a very good boy who was carefully released back to fall river. Booked what turned out to be an epic day on the Crooked River with my 12 yr old son and our guide Cade. While we fish regularly this was our first fly fishing experience. So much fun. I appreciate the fact that all the staff we talked to before and during our trip helped us both learn about fly fishing and helped us land some great memories and quite a few fish. I visited the shop a couple of times and they are great at answering questions and helpful. I booked a full day trip for 2 of us for mid September. We met our guide at the shop early in the morning and Bryon was great. Once we got out to the river he was extremely patient and very good at instruction. My daughter had never fly fished before and I think she hooked up in about 15 minutes. We spent the day having him show us all there little holes (sorry, not going to pass those on) and caught so many fish. All in all one of the best days fishing I have had in a very long time. This is a review for the location in Sunriver, NOT Bend. I am assuming it's the same company. Nice shop but not thrilled by service. Visited shop three times in June 2013. A couple employees were nice/ helpful, but others a bit of attitude. Employees should be eager to help and be enthusiastic about customers coming in for advice, etc. I felt like a couple of the gentlemen working there were annoyed by my presence. Not all of us are experienced hardcore anglers, so yes we may ask the same dumb questions, get used to it. Another employee, a college age guy, sat behind the counter eating a burger while I asked questions. What business in this day and age allows employees to eat while talking to customers? All in all, not a bad experience, but with Sunriver Fly shop just a couple minutes away, I have no reason to stay loyal to the Hook. read more

If I could give them six stars I would. Our guides Tommy and Hunter worked incredibly hard to put our group where the fish were biting. Fantastic guides for a group that had little to no fly fishing experience. Everyone caught a fish (or multiple fish). Fantastic memories all around. My husband and I did a full day of fly fishing with Brian at Crooked River. I have never fly fished before but he was a patient teacher and I caught close to a dozen fish (this is strictly catch and release). Brian gave my husband and I personal coaching and knew all the holes that had fish and how to fish them. I left feeling confident that I could fly fish on my own. Lunch and water was provided along with equipment and gear. I highly recommend this guided trip with Brian, though there are other guides who I am sure are great as well. I suggest getting there on a day before your trip to fill out paperwork and order lunch. That way, the morning of you pick out shoes and waders and your off! read more

I live in California and visit this shop four times a year when on vacation. They are always helpful and polite. A number of times they've even sent me flies on order, and one time I sent them a picture of a live stonefly and they were able to match it perfectly and send it to me. Not very professional to go through a no wake zone on crane prairie past 4 fly fisherman in float tubes, kicking up a wake. Dangerous and doesn't represent you well. Then they got to the ramp and damaged the tailgate of the truck because they forgot to put it up when loading the boat. Not safe all around. read more

Sorry about the other reviewers' experiences, but my many experiences with The Hook is a polar opposite. I have shopped in the store on many occasions, and I have called them for advice on fishing the Cascade lakes many more times than that. They offer excellent flies. The staff has always been available and apparently very willing to offer tips on flies and fishing. I have dealt with the owner recently, who was very accommodating in arranging a purchase. If you plan to fish near Bend and avoid The Hook, you are not taking advantage of a real resource. read more

These guys are the best. They have an okay selection of fly tying stuff, a huge selection of flies (many of which are specialized ties for the local waters that you won't find elsewhere), and great people. They're also the only place to buy fishing licenses if you're in the Sunriver area. I live about 4 miles from the shop. There are two other fly shops within a mile or so, one of which is really a warehouse for an internet operation and the other is staffed and owned by an unpredictable individual and I just don't like going in there. These guys have and share the straight scoop on when, where and everything you need to be successful. I don't get the complaint about the employees being annoyed. The owners are great. They hire additional help during the tourist season (most of whom return every year) and everyone that I have spoken with has been knowledgeable, courteous and helpful. In a resort destination like this they have to serve people of all skill levels, from complete noobs to people who are professional fly fishers and authors. I have never seen anyone treated rudely, although I have seen a bit of rudeness from customers as you might expect in any retail business. And, my God, give the kid with the hamburger a break. Sunriver is a busy place during tourist season and they probably needed all hands on deck. He may have been sacrificing his lunch hour to serve customers. read more
