We had no clue what we were doing and would never do that again as each of us got cut up pretty good on brush and rocks. Both of the lakes in the Paulina Crater have hot springs, and I have been to both. I would recommend checking out the Paulina Lake Hot Springs if you have to choose as there are about 10ish pools over there that are more pronounced. Though the springs at East Lake are more secluded and less busy. I really enjoy the springs at these lakes as there seems to be little to no nudity here. This makes me feel like less of a creep when I am trying to get some good nature shots. The springs at the east lake can be small and need a bit of digging out as they typically get washed out from what I hear. This combined with the fact that there seems to be some sulfur coming out making them a four-star location for me. Though it is a good reminder that this is no spa and mother nature is in charge when traveling to these natural springs. The view from the springs is amazing as you are located right on the rim of the lake. This makes temperature control pretty easy as you can allow some lake water to cool down the springs. Overall I would go back and would definitely recommend these hot springs when Paulina Lake Springs get too crowded. If you are on a boat on East Lake, you should check them out for sure!

The kitchen staff were also friendly and fun, and it truly felt like a full vacation in three days. Friday morning, we reserved a pontoon boat. The lake was glassy and calm until about 11 a.m., and we had a wonderful time swimming and fishing. Later, when the wind picked up and we struggled to dock the pontoon boat, Bruce saw us and immediately came over to help. He was calm and reassuring and helped us dock without any trouble. Friday evening there was live music outside while guests ate, drank and called out song requests, and kite surfers flew across the lake in the background. The homemade chicken corn chowder was especially good. It had the perfect amount of spice, and I honestly could have eaten three bowls. One of the servers suggested that we check out the quiet day-use area behind the resort. It has picnic tables, a picturesque creek, and a nearby hiking trail. We spent time stargazing, sitting by the dock, and playing cards inside at night. At times, it felt like we had the whole lodge to ourselves. The owners, Bruce and Candace Silvey, have created a genuinely welcoming place where it is easy to relax. We had an unforgettable trip and look forward to returning.

They offered to move our campsite away from the noise - reminder no one really wants to hear your music in the outdoors/nature and not at an ear splitting volume at 930p (or anytime of day really). We had a lake front site so the noise from the lake and the afternoon breeze was delightful. 10/10 would recommend and Bruce and Liz easily make it a 12/10!!

This region is characterized by extensive lava flows, including the 7,000-year-old flow from Lava Butte, a prominent cinder cone. How I like to see as much as possible is by mountain bike. From Lava Lands parking lot pick up the 4 mile fast flow furious fun single track for 4 miles curving through Ponderosa Pines following lava fields. Ride through the lava rock featuring panoramic views of snow capped mountains. At the end of Black Rock single track connect with the Deschutes River and ride along at least a mile to Benham Falls - so magnificent! Continue riding 5-10-XX more miles filling up your passion bucket in the natural wonders following and flowing with the Deschutes River. I fulled up my bucket for 20 miles - at time rivers flows with power and times as still as a lake. Let's go! Wherever the powerful river flows! Wherever the peaceful river goes! Many feel the pace only the river knows - as I did flow along by mountain bike!

It was a great time, as although some things aren't opened yet, most areas were and we were nearly alone at each stop. Paulina Falls is fabulous...it has height and a unique split stream that falls from separate sides. The surrounding forest is serene, and there's a decent amount of parking and a handful of picnic tables. There's a great trail back and forth to the lake, and a short zig zag trail down to the bottom for another great perspective. We really enjoyed the monument, and Paulina Falls was definitely a highlight!

When in Newbury Volcanic National Forest., you definitely want to check this one out. From the parking lot, the upper falls viewing area is only .25 miles away. Of course you can continue walking upstream or downstream to see more! In mid May the stream of water coming down was impressive: so beautiful! We drove around until we found Riverview RV park this is a very clean wonderful RV park lots of grass, well maintained and very quiet. Unlike the larger adjacent Lava Lake, Little Lava Lake is motor-free, so it's a good kayaking spot…read more - The campground, which is popular and can be crowded, offers very convenient sites very close to the lake. - No facilities other than primitive toilets (which seem well-maintained) - Good boat (kayak) launch ramp - Views of Mt Bachelor, Broken Top, South Sister - Little Lava Lake is the head-water of the Deschutes River, which for those who live here is kinda cool. - You'll find hiking trails all around the area, some marked, most not. One goes over to Lava Lake and branches off into the forest towards Mt Bachelor. There are also maintained trails nearby across the highway, such as Lucky Lake and Six Lakes (a bit further north up the road). The road to Lava Lake & Little Lava Lake - Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway, Hwy 46 - is closed during winter due to snow. The affected portions and timing vary with snowfall and melt. Access to LL & LLL from the north past Elk Lake stays closed longer, while the road from the south opens earlier.
