Super awesome stop on the way from bend back to Salem. On the river there is a cute little store and you can rent row boats and kayaks. The half day rental for a row boat is only $17.50! There was about 10 other people on the water, but the water and area remained so calm and smooth. You'll see scuba divers. So many ducks. Some fishes in the water. You can ride by the shore and see all the lava rocks. The water is CRYSTAL clear. You can see right to the bottom. I've never seen anything like it. Definitely worth a stop or a plan to come to see this lake!

I've gone scuba diving here a few times and love it! The lake is situated about 20 miles west of Sisters, Oregon and is spectacularly clear as the name would suggest. They stock this lake with trout and the last time I was there, fishermen/women were limiting out, so they must have just stocked it recently. There are plenty of hiking trails around the lake, so it's a must see and experience kind of place if you're an outdoorsy person. Camping here is great as well. You can book a cabin or do it up rustic and pitch a tent. Cabins are booked in advance up to a year, so if you can plan that far ahead, I'd suggest you do so. There are 4 modern cabins that have full kitchens and bathrooms and showers in them and go quickly. The other cabins have a burner in them so you can cook meals, but do not contain restroom facilities, so you'll have to rough it with the other campers. The lake is quite cold, so if you're a scuba diver, then I highly recommend being Dry Suit Certified. The water temp ranges from 34 degrees to a balmy 43 in the summer :-)... Access down is pretty easy, but if you're towing a boat or have a larger vehicle, the turns can be quite tight. No motors are allowed, so be aware of that if you have a boat. The prices are reasonable as well and during peak summer season, the cabins range from $64.00 -$99.00 per night (pending on the cabin style). Boat rentals are $15.00/hour or $30.00/day. Overall Rating: 95% Price: 5/5 Access: 4/5 Hiking: 5/5 Scuba Diving: 5/5

Unlike the reviews posted, we did not camp nor rent any equipment here. Lol Visited the lake after we hiked both Sahalie and Koosah Falls. We just parked and hung around the lake for a good hour or two. We saw a bunch of mountain bikers and family who planned on camping at this one little cottage that seems to be available for everyone. It seems like it's first-come, first-serve. The lake itself is breathtaking! The color is so blue and we even saw someone canoeing. Even if you guys are not camping or renting a boat, check the lake out! It's quite breathtaking!

Cabin # 7, propane cook top, propane heater which has a thermostat. Ladder to the loft.

So whenever we enjoy views of the river or Sahalie Falls, we think of this area as well.

The Deschutes National Forest is one of the twelve national forests in Oregon (Oregon is in a three…read moreway tie for second place with the most national forests in the US & Puerto Rico) and covers over a million and a half acres. They are all beautiful, but Deschutes is special. It spans the area between the McKenzie River area to the high desert in eastern Oregon. You start in the warm(er) area and by the time you hit the summit there's snow on the ground. And as you're reaching higher elevation, you find yourself passing through the lava beds. One of the volcanos in the forest was used by the Apollo astronauts in the 60s. It's a really peaceful drive, and a breathtaking one. Suttle Lake is near Sisters, and it's really beautiful. There are several pull-out areas along the highway to take in the view. Bend is the big town in the area, and Sisters is a popular tourist stop as well.

But National Forests really hadn't registered with me until lately - they've just been large undeveloped places with lots of trees that I drove through to get to a park. Not anymore. I love Deschutes National Forest. What with the Cascade Volcanoes, the river, the creeks, the lakes, the many hiking trails, the dirt roads for my 4WD, this forest is like a huge national park. And so close to Bend. You literally are in the forest as you drive out of town. It will take many years to explore even a small fraction of the forest, but I'm up for the challenge.

Most roads feel brand new with well marked lines and signs. Parking/trailhead: Signs clearly marked parking area for Blue Pool. Long road leading up to trailhead is unpaved and parking is only allowed on one side. Luckily we were early so got a spot not too far down. Two restrooms, pretty stinky but what can you expect? Trail: Pretty easy hike. Mostly even paths I think overall theres about 300 feet gain on it. Some parts were very muddy, a big portion is rocky with lots of lava rock. Some parts have tree roots sticking up. CAUTION: Parts of trail have a really high cliff that drops off into the river with no markings so be careful especially with dogs or kids. Pool: Of course amazing views once you get to the pool. The side you arrive on is on a cliff with the view of the pool below. You can hike down to the pool by hiking around the edge but some parts are really close to the edge. Descending and ascending is difficult and is not for the weak. Over all we had an amazing time. The hike was a little longer than I thought but nothing too crazy even for a novice hiker. I would suggest bringing water and snacks, we didn't and regretted it. If you get down to the water at least dip your feet in. We did and it felt amazing and we actually felt reguvenated for our hike back.

The drive to the trailhead took 2.5 hours from my home in Portland, so we left by 6. If you arrive after 9 or 10 you have to deal with the crowds. Sahalie Falls was first and can be accessed very easily from the parking lot - no hike required. Keep this one in mind if you have mobility limitations. If you're up for it, hit the trail here. A short distance along the Mckenzie Creek will take you to Koosah Falls. Gorgeous, with falling turquoise water. Want a scare? Look up the fools who cliff jump from here. Incredible. After that you pass by the reservoir, then have a nice hike along a soft pine needle path down to Tomalitch Blue Pool. Again with the cliff jumping. Don't do it! So dangerous. But do carefully follow the pink ribbons over the rock ledge and down to the shore. You can swim if you dare in the 38 degree water. At least dunk your feet. The hike back to where you parked at Sahalie is 5 miles. Pack a lunch, a lot of water (I finished my 3 liters), and enjoy the day.
