Finally made it to Laut several weeks ago for a bday dinner! Laut serves a blend of Malaysian, Singaporean, and Thai food and has several vegetarian options with clear labeling. It's been around for over 15 years, but still attracts a healthy crowd...we went on a Monday and had to wait at least 30 min for a table for two, so def try to make a reservation! We ordered: Roti Canai - I usually love roti, but this was a little too sweet, and the curry was really liquidy/watery. I still enjoyed it, but I wouldn't order it again. Crunchy Okra - I was on the fence about ordering this, but I'm so glad we did. It has the perfect amount of spice and the dip it came with was the perfect complement. Ultimate Curry Laksa (w/tofu and no fish ball) - This was delicious and huge! I took at least half of it home and it was just as good the next day. Mango sticky rice - This came out a bit melted, but I love anything with mango and this was no exception. Also, I tried to be sneaky and asked them if I could order a dessert (the mango sticky rice) to bring out as a birthday surprise for my friend without realizing that birthdays are a BIG DEAL at Laut. They turned off all the lights inside and came over singing with a candle and complementary drink. It was really sweet, even if a little awkward to have so much unexpected attention on us. This restaurant is not a great value and EXPENSIVE!!Great service and a little rushed. Nicely renovated restaurant, which I believe was a Thai restaurant pre- COVID. The food ranged from excellent to mediocre- our party of 2 ordered a combo of 3 appetizers and 2 or 3 small entrees throughout the meal. The portions were generally small and well presented. With 2 diet cokes- bill was close to $130 before tip. The tip machine was based on the after- tax amount not the traditional pre-tax, so adjust tip accordingly!Having lived in NYC, this is EXPENSIVE. Came here for dinner on a Friday night and loved it! We booked a reservation 2 days in advance and saw that their availability for Friday was pretty much wide open, so it didn't seem as hard to get a table as others have said. In terms of food, we got the chicken satay, the roti canai, the soft-shell chili crab, and the masak asam pedas. The chicken satay was hands down my favorite dish, but everything was extremely flavorful and delicious. Service was excellent as well - all the staff were courteous and friendly, and I appreciated how frequently they cleared empty plates and refilled waters. After having been introduced to Southeast Asian cuisine on a recent trip to Australia, we were excited to seek it out in the food capital of the world, NYC! We snagged a reservation for lunch which was the right move since the place was packed with quite a few groups. Inside, the walls have boldly painted designs and hanging signs that make you feel like you're in some food alley in Asia - super fun. For the food, we basically tried everything we had in Australia - roti canai, mamak mee goreng noodles, and seafood laksa. Also tried the chicken satay and pad see ew, which I find to be universally hard to mess up. First, to be fair, everything was tasty. The roti tore apart gently but still had crispy bits. The satays were tender and juicy. The pad see ew was its reliable salty balanced with that slight umami. We were very hopeful for the mee goreng which turned out to be just kind of ok. Flavorful but not the strong taste that we experienced in the past. Similarly for the laksa, we were preparing for a bold flavor that makes your forehead start beading up with sweat. But it was surprisingly mild. We were so surprised and still wanting some heat we ordered the tom yum soup. Again, it was tasty but lacked a certain kick. Maybe we could have customized the heat level and if we return, we definitely will. The service was efficient and friendly. Stopped by for a late lunch on a weekend. There weren't too many people, so we got a table immediately. I haven't had a roti canai that I've disliked, and that streak isn't stopping any time soon. The roti was thin and crispy. The curry was just the right mix of spices. Sambal belacan was okay. The noodles were a but too overcooked though. The coconut rice from the nasi lemak was super fragrant and delicious. It helped to balanced the salty components of the dish. Everything was slightly sweet, which would've been okay if we got one dish. However, the sweetness just made me want something purely salty to contrast it. Laut has plenty of options to order from its Malaysian, Singaporean and Thai cuisine menu. On my recent visit to New York, my friend brought me here for a lunch. We made the reservation the morning of the same day and got seated pretty quickly when we arrived. I ordered their signature dish - nasi lemak (chicken curry and rice). It's served in the metal plate and comes with shrimp, chicken curry, rice, peanuts, pickles, cucumbers, and some sauce. I had shrimp removed from my dish just coz I'm allergic to it. But the chicken was tender and tasted decent. The flavors were very coconut-ty. I'd rate it as 3.5/5 as it wasn't something I will come back for. My friend ordered Spicy night market fried rice. Again it was good but not something I felt wow after eating. Overall food is decent. But Since it's NYC having crazy innumerable options, I'd rather visit other places. The service was also sub par, nothing amazing. The ambiance was quite where you can go for casual meet up. Great dinner with good company, but I was expecting more. Considering the food was tasty, I rate 4/5, but I was close to giving 3/5. My party made a reservation for 7:30. Before entering the restaurant, we could tell it was tight space, considering the line out the door (merely because there was no room in the front of the restaurant for people to stand if they want to put their name down or check in). We were escorted to our table, and it was a pretty tight squeeze, and felt like a small-ish table for the 5 of us. I liked the decor - there was cool wall artwork! It is dim lighting inside, which can be fun for date night/ night out vibes. (I personally don't love the dim lighting as much because I cant see the intricacies of the food well!!). There were also no physical menus offered, just the one QR code in the middle of the table. Given we didn't have much space on the table, it was probably for the best, but I do prefer physical menus. We tried a lot!!! Roti Canai - 5/5 This was a good appetizer! Char Kway Teow - 5/5 One of my favorite entrees of the night. Very flavorful. (Was it more special than other char away teows I've had? No, but it was good). Laksa - 5/5 Another favorite entree. I really loved the curry broth. The noodles were cooked well, and not mushy. The fish balls and shrimp were good too. Spicy Night Market Fried Rice - 1/5 This was underwhelming. It was not spicy to me, and in fact lacked flavor in general, and was dry. My friends also reported it could be saltier. The cabbage in the dish didn't add anything to the rice. Chili Crab - 2/5 For the price we were expecting better. It was not much crab in the dish. The sauce itself was good, on the sweeter side, but I don't think it justified the price. If you do go for this, get the steamed bao! Beef Rendang - 4/5 Worth getting this dish! Very tasty. It's served in a small bowl but there was enough to share amongst the 5 of us (although i wish there had been more!!) Food here was good and tasty overall. There were times where there was barely any room on the table, but the service did a good job in serving the dishes in "courses", so not everything was served at once. Some dishes like the chili crab didn't seem that worth it to me for the price. I was a bit surprised at how many awards seemed to be featured on the menu for things that didn't stand out to me too much, but I could be biased. There is this amazing Malaysian restaurant in northern Virginia that had such good prices for incredible food and maybe I'm comparing heavily to that (Malaysian Kopitiam for anyone interested!). read more

Delicious Malaysian food in the city! We were able to get a table despite not having a reservation; however, this place can get really popular in the evenings so I highly recommend making one if you can. We got the rendang curry, chicken satay, and sambal belachan. The rendang curry was so savory and full of flavor. It's the one dish that they are well known for and my favorite. Absolutely loved the chicken satay. The chicken was juicy and the peanut sauce added the perfect amount of sweetness to the savory chicken. The sambal belachan was surprisingly more mild than I expected but also pretty solid. The only downside is that this place is a little on the pricey side and their portion size is small; however, would highly recommend if you are craving malaysian food on the area. They deleted my Google review! Very rude host :( we arrived at around 7pm last Thursday without a reservation. White male host with a beard said two bar seats are opening up soon and asked us to wait outside and he"ll come grab us. Great, we were excited. Not even 5 minutes later, we saw the two promised bar seats handed to another couple who arrived after us. We went back to the host and asked what happened. He sounded rude and tried to deflect: claiming the OTHER two bar seats are also wrapping up soon and those will be ours. That didn't sound right. We pressed again and he admitted that the other two bar seats are only in the middle of their entree so it wouldn't be ready for another 30 mins. wtf. We asked why did you give our seats to people who arrived afterwards? now he starts bullshitting and said they mixed up a reservation and was a "misunderstanding". Yea sure, great excuse bro. Zero customer service and no apology. Host was non chalant the entire time. I stopped by with a friend who really likes this place. We ordered Roti Canai, Night Market Fried Rice, and Ultimate Curry Laksa. The service was fast and servers are polite. My fav of all was the Night Market Fried Rice. It was spicy enough to get a kick as well as rich with tofu and side of lettuce. I'll surely recommend this to anyone. I ordered Roti Canai because it was one of the most recommended dish at this place, but I thought it was average. Portions of roti were nice and soft, portions were flaky. So I liked it from variety of textures perspective. Finally, I thought the laksa curry noodle soup was just ok. It had very generous portions of tofu in it but in my opinion the chef should probably dice tofu is smaller chunks so they are tasteful and absorb some flavor from the curry after they are dipped. Right now they are so huge that you might have to bite two times because of which you may experience the taste of raw tofu. That was a bit of turn off for me. I was really excited to try Laut as I absolutely ADORE Malaysian! It could have just been what I ordered - I got mixed veggies, but I didn't realize they were just steamed and did not come with any protein option included. I got a drink that was really cute and placed in a to-go takeout box, but the amount you get inside was minimal in order for the concept to work, and it was pretty weak. (Overall: 86% | B) - Laut is a southeast asian restaurant that previously held a michelin star. I found the overall vibe of the restaurant to be quite cute and aesthetic, but a little cramped. The food was very fulfilling, but for some reason our food came out disproportionately slow compared to the surrounding tables. The servers were quite attentive though, so overall the experience was pleasing. (Pad Thai: 95% | A) - The proportion is really impressive as it is quite a large portion of noodles for a fair price; further, the chicken is surprisingly tender and the noodles were nicely textures to be soft and have a bite with classic ingredients to create that iconic sweet, salty, sour flavor. The presentation could be improved to make it look even more impressive though. (Roti Canal: 82.5% | B) - The roti is presented nicely and is very well made with luscious texture. Came back here as a group of 5 with a reservation: Roti Canai again: better this time when it stayed warm longer vs eating outside my first time. Roti Telur: this was thicker and had a filling similar to the texture of scallion pancake or jeon, but the roti canai was better. Nesi Lamak: this was a compilation of different dishes if you want to try different things; the vegetables (pickled?) were refreshing in this one Singapore Crispy Soft-Shell Crab: you got to choose the accompaniment, and we chose the fried bao. It comes out hot and a bit too oily, but I thought that it paired well with the dishes to dip in. The entree itself was a bit too sweet for me, and I didn't like that the crab was soggy since half of it is dunked in the sauce. Famouse Rendang Curry: we got this with shrimp and coconut rice (which we didn't realize was an upcharge). Very flavorful and maybe the favorite of the group. Really good lunch! We tried to have dinner here one midweek evening a few weeks ago but it was packed and we didn't have reservations. So when we found ourselves in the neighborhood one Thursday afternoon, we went to try again - and had no problem, there were plenty of open tables! Lots of options for lunch, from the regular menu or their lunch specials. We chose the lunch specials. Hubs had veg/tofu pad see ew. This was a generous portion of vegetables with noodles, in a lightly spiced sauce. Came with a wee cup of light green salad. I chose the veg/tofu sambal, a well spiced sauce. I got tons of fresh stir-fried veggies and tofu, an inverted cone of perfectly cooked brown rice (you can choose white or brown) and also the little cup of crunchy light green lettuce salad. Service is friendly, they offer drink specials at lunch though we generally don't have alcohol with lunch. We'll make reservations for dinner another time, but at least we can say we tried the place and we were quite pleased! read more

I am sooooooo glad, that I chose to experience Laut. The staff is super friendly and willing to help with all of their selections. Everything that we ordered was DELICIOUS, flavorful, and cooked/prepared to perfection. We started with something that I have never tasted and now...I am a HUGE FAN....Roti Canai (thin, flaky Indian pancake, accompanied with a spicy curry sauce). The steamed vegetable dumplings were  delightful. The sweet dipping chili soy sauce pleasantly elevated the enjoyment. The Papaya Salad and Vegetable Pad Thai were amazing. I appreciated how our server asked for the level of spiciness, for the salad. For my beverage, I ordered the Hot White Coffee in iced coffee form. This is made from beans roasted in margarine, ground, brewed, and served with condensed milk. I was in heaven. If you are into Malaysian food, please add Laut to your list. Stumbled upon this place while finding a good dinner spot to catch up with my friend. It turned out to be a great choice - would definitely recommend for a cute date or just catching up with old friends! Loved the Malaysian food here - and apparently it was one of the first Malaysian restaurants to receive a Michelin Star in NY! We went on a weekday night, and it was still pretty full so definitely recommend a reservation! Food-wise, we ordered the Asam Laksa (as-it) noodle soup, which according to the menu was Anthony Bourdain's favorite dish. I think it's definitely an authentic dish - personally I thought it had very interesting flavors, but want to warn folks who do not like strong flavors - especially with the fish sauce and raw onions. We also ordered the Ultimate Curry Laksa noodle soup - with seafood, strongly recommend this!! Flavorful and thick noodle soup - so very fulfilling comfort food. The appetizer we ordered is Roti Telur, which is Indian pancake with egg, hot pepper, and onion, and is served with spicy curry dip. We enjoyed this too - fluffy pancake texture and spicy dip. Service is pretty fast, but can be tricky when it gets busy. The menu seems to contain a lot of other authentic dishes that I haven't had a chance to try yet - will definitely go back to try more! Laut does not disappoint. The ambiance is great and even when it's busy they are able to accommodate quite quickly. Service here is great and the food is even better. Got the duck curry which is phenomenal. The coconut flavor helps cut the richness of the duck. The curry laksa broth is always a safe but delicious choice as well. Decided to get it with tofu and veggies. It warms the soul, truly. Finally the Hakka Crispy Chili was good but nothing special, I would skip this next time. Was looking for some good Malaysian food near work and stumbled upon this chain. I first went to the other location and was told only this one at 17th Street had lunch. So here I was. I ordered the Nasi Lemak, Char Kway Teow w/beef, and Hainanese Chicken. The nasi lemak was good. The coconut rice was flavorful, but I wish it had more curry chicken. The Char kway teow was good! On point. So why the 3 stars? I would even say 2.5. The hainanese chicken isn't cooked the right way. It's not the tendered poach chicken with the sesame rubbed skin. This one is roasted and super, super dry. When I opened this, I thought someone gave me the wrong order, possibly someone's left over lunch. It was pretty bad. The only savior in that was the rice. That wasn't messed up. Overall, skip the hainanese chicken at all cost! Plus, it was $24 worth of fail. read more

Fantastic food. There are not that many Malaysian restaurants around the area and their roti canai is amazing. So are their incredible lunch offerings. I have been there more than once and every time as far as food goes, they knock it out of the park. But service is always so spotty. It is like they forgot they seated you and then they forget that they fed you. I even got up and got my own water since they didn't care to bring me some! Maybe it is a labor shortage but I usually don't find these shortages in ethnic places (jk jk). The food is so good that I keep going back. This is by far the best Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant that we have tried in the US. When I say best, it's Michelin star level best. I was skeptical at first but my Singaporean raised husband pushed me to try this. The laksa curry was mind blowing. I have never had anything like that before in my life. An alright restaurant. I heard a lot of praise that the food here is very authentically made. While it doesn't taste bad by any means, I feel like some dishes don't taste the way that I am used to. The basil fried rice in particular didn't have that strong basil flavor that I usually get. I also had the roti (delicious), chicken satay, char kway teow, curry laksa, basil fried rice, and chicken rendang. The entrees in particular didnt strike me as anything super exciting. Roti Canai - nothing special on the Roti but the current dip was amazing Soft Shell Crab - had high expectations for this one but was slightly disappointed as the soft shell crab wasn't crispy and the sauce was very sour. I did not taste the authentic chili crab taste at all. Massaman Curry - 100% recommend and the highlight of our dinner! The curry was packed with flavor and the chicken was really soft juicy.
