NEVER order pumpkin pancakes from this place or you are guaranteed to get a plate of mush. They use way too much canned pumpkin or whatever they do to make them so wet. It was like this last year and I thought it was a fluke so I tried them again yesterday..nope not a fluke, came out the same way. Apparently it's just their way of making them. Also ordered an egg cream that was fiat and too sweet so I asked for another. Lo and behold it came out the same way. I was too annoyed to send it back and wasn't bothering to complain about the pancakes after I already did about the egg cream. After spending $30 bucks for a plate wet mushy pancakes and a flat egg cream I'm just chalking this one up as a loss. I would say overall the place is cool looking but the vibe from the staff is not a warm one. Maybe because they've gotten too comfortable after being here forever and have plenty of business so they don't need yours. It felt like they're doing you a favor by allowing you to eat at their coffee shop. Fellow diners who expect a little more, you've been warned. read more

The Laurel is a diner so it doesn't have any ambiance, but it is pleasant. The food is tasty, well prepared and looks appealing on the plate. The portions are plentiful, depending on what you order, many meals are shareable. They prepare greek, American, Italian and Mexican dishes. It's a great place for a decent meal! read more

Great, reliable, kid-friendly brunch spot that tends to get very busy. They're the only place in Long Beach that offered crayons/coloring for my 2-year-old, so that was already a plus. And she loved the eggs and ate some of the silver dollar pancakes, leaving full and happy. I enjoyed custom omelette a with cheddar cheese and either broccoli or mushrooms. The toast (wheat and rye) was over-buttered but delicious. The coffee wasn't the best in Long Beach- a bit heavy and dark for my taste, but it was all right. Overall, it was a good experience and we will definitely be back. read more

It is not exactly a diner - quite expensive and beside basics has a lots of fancy food, but that's fine. Some dishes are really excellent and the food is usually good, even diner fare. But when you order often they get it wrong - why? Maybe they should repeat the order to the customer before leaving the table to place the order. I think they type it on a device, so maybe they get that part wrong. As I said, expensive for a diner. Also diners elsewhere stay open late, like 11 pm. I think this place closes either 9:30 or 10, which is their choice, but don't assume it's open late. Long Beach/Oceanside used to have a real diner years ago, but for now this is the only game in town. Some of the wait staff is nice, some have an attitude (again, why?) I get the feeling those individuals would rather be working at a different job. I don't live in LB, but am there quite a bit. My hometown diner is more like Cheers - everyone knows your name, and the waitstaff is great and the prices are reasonable. So, I am comparing here. The decor at this place, by the way, is very cute -- like an art deco drive-in movie theatre. Usually like this place - it is a consistent decent meal with great variety. this particular day - another party of two that arrived after us, were seated first. I politely inquired about it and she was not only unapologetic, she was defensive and quite rude. I was very disappointed. We left went to billies instead - always a great option in long beach! After my disappointment wanes the Laurel will likely go back into be in my Long Beach dining routine, but not for a while, much less often and will be much lower on the totem pole. This is the heartbeat of Long Beach, but they stopped caring. The people are wonderful but the food is regular diner fare, even sub-par. When they had their revival it was unbelievably delicious. It didn't stay that way for long. They got people waiting out the door to get in and it was worth the wait. The chef got lazy and went back to frozen, sometimes stale food. The fries and onion rings are old and often burnt and served to you. You can see the fries are put on your plate that were laying on the bottom of the tray and they are burnt, tiny pieces. The bacon is inedible, not cooked fresh and you never smell it cooking, as you should if it's fresh. If they (Chef) (owner) could raise their standards a little, I would go more often. As it is I go pretty frequently but never, ever leave there satisfied. I guess people are ok with crappy food because they are still rocking a crowd. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for 50 years. I've seen it go up I seem to go down I see they go to a couple remodeling. The food was always good however, the past year I'm seeing the food start to go downhill. I've been there a couple of times and ordered the French dip or just a plain roast beef sandwich only to be extremely disappointed That the roast beef was tough I could not sure I want to leave in half the sandwich this past weekend. I went there and ordered a hamburger and french fries. The hamburger was like eating shoe leather. The bun was stale. It really is a shame to see what's going on with this restaurant. While soup was not spectacular, the broiled pork loin with mashed potatoes and green beans was excellent and I could only manage to eat half of what they served me! Even a few onion rings on top. She had a massive plate of broiled chicken with broccoli, also very good. So all told, the menu is not huge but the portions are, and the food quality, taste, and freshness very good, service is good and prices are more than reasonable. From the pancakes and French toast to the penne ala vodka and skirt steak... literally nothing sucks!! The food is truly flavorful and always cooked to your specification... but the staff... PHENOMENAL!! I go often enough and alway, ALWAYS ask to be seated in Athos section because he's so sweet and helpful and always has such a great attitude. Best diner in the area! We love the Laurel and stop by as often as we can (probably more than we should!). There tends to be a line out the door, but they do their best to get you in and seated as soon as possible They have a nice big menu with lots of options for everyone. I am pretty partial to the Greek salad myself, but have been known to order a side of fries as a starter (potato is a vegetable right?). Service is great and we have never been disappointed. Ordered in from here last night with my friend because it was chilly and we didn't want to get off the couch. I ordered the Veganista in a WW wrap with added feta and my friend ordered Pete's Panini. We both received pickles, extra sauces, and coleslaw with our meals, along with a side of our choosing. I went for a beautifully baked sweet potato for a few extra bucks and my friend got the fries (which was an extremely generous serving). The food tasted very fresh, the portions were perfect, and it was delivered in a timely manner. It was so effortless and yummy I almost want to order in from them again tonight! I imagine going to the Laurel in 1965 was much like it is now and I'm glad! The place looks like time stopped, but the great service and food didn't. Moderately priced diner food, with a few extras that you don't normally find. I strongly recommend the eggs Halifax if you're into smoked salmon. It's like eggs Benedict however they use fresh smoked salmon instead of Canadian bacon. You can expect to find long lines on weekend mornings, but it's worth it!!! read more

Returned again this Sunday early morning. The place was not too crowded at around 8am. We ordered the ham steak and eggs and a waffle with coffee. Waitress was very friendly and did not take long for our order. When she put my plate down on table, I was a bit shocked at the size of the ham steak. maybe 3/4 of an inch thick maybe about 8 inches in length. eggs, home fries and toast. Everything was good. I had to take half of the ham home because I was too full to finish. After about 9am the place started getting crowded and we were getting ready to leave. this restaurant doesn't care about enforcing mask policy. managers, waiters and delivery personnel either wear no mask or wear it below the nose claiming the masks are too loose. nor do the require patrons indoors to wear masks, they are served regardless! when i told the counter waiter he needs to wear mask above his nose, his response was we follow cdc guidelines. cdc doesn't say to wear below nose. delivery man came in and out 3 times, no mask inside. a customer right near the register was not wearing a mask and your cashier shrugged. so your doing something right but not nearly enough. read more
