My 200th review and of course this Jew is using it on a Long Beach diner. I wouldn't have it any other way. Laurel is the way a diner should be. A large menu of fairly inexpensive fare to satisfy your every craving no matter what hour of the day. I visited on two separate occasions because I couldn't just settle on one amazing breakfast choice so I had to come back. The nutella stuffed french toast was incredible and so filling. I also had an apple waffle that was to die for. They also have home-made muffins including orange cranberry that were incredibly moist and delicious which I wasn't expecting. Being Long Beach residents, we tend to stay away during the summer months..can't get near the place! 01/17. We love Gus! Only complaint..you need a much larger space! The Laurel as it's known as is a LB classic old school diner that's been around since the 30's. The food here is that of a classic diner with the usual fare. Eggs, pancakes, burgers and salads. The service is quick and prices are normal. Although this should be a staple everywhere they serve you coffee in a nice thermal carafe that keeps the coffee nice and warm and eliminates any wait for that second cup to come around. The Laurel is a throwback to the 60's luncheonette of yore. Not being an Oceanside native, I find the experience of a Long Island diner to be as much an experience as a meal. The food at the Laurel is solid, a good mix of greasy spoon items, with breakfast making up the brunt. If i had to pick I'd say the omelets looked best, although my brisket sandwich with curly fries hit the spot. On the downside, probably not the cleanest place I'v ever seen, and the service leaves something to be desired: but hey, its a diner. read more

First visit back since the reopening. Slight higher prices, slightly smaller portions and slightly poorer service. The chicken gyro was much smaller then in the past. The chicken was very thinly sliced and pressed pieces which was very salty. Not the gtilled chicken pieces as in the past. No glasses of water brought to the table, no coffee refilles or iced tea refills offered, had to hail down a bus boy. Had to ask twice for a to go container to be brought to the table. Disappointed. I ordered delivery and ended up throwing most of it away. My chef salad had a 1 piece of meat each & about a pound of American cheese. There is a reason why a cheese salad is not on any diner menu. After throwing away the cheese I had a tiny 14.00 salad. The $3 muffin I ordered was burnt black & got thrown away too. Diners on the Island have stepped up their game since the competition became fierce..the sushi joints...fusions...boutiques etc etc. Diners began to wane the past decade or so and pretty much as a collective revamped there service across the board recently. It always takes me a long time to write reviews for local places that I frequent so often. It's so hard to sum up something that you have grown to love like an old blanket in one review and really explain what such a place - kind of like explaining why you love your dog to someone that has never had a pet. Anyway, I love laurel and I have frequented the spot often solely due to the closeness to my home...until now. Now I actually go because I love it. They were recently renovated (the spot has a great history which can be seen in the black and whites on the walls) and along with the physical renovation came a newly renovated menu. They were always known for their award winning pancakes (yes, they are superb) and their extremely long brunch line on sunday mornings (definitely worth it, but if you want there is an always empty diner directly across the street). I could rave about this place forever but I'll just say that the pancakes are amazing, eggs benedict perfect, omelettes are my favorite and customizable, the portions are extremely generous and the service both in diner and delivery wise are quick and efficient. The lunch items are very good - especially the greek, santorini and prasini salads as are the staple items such as chicken fingers, sandwiches and fries. One of the last old diners around and there's a reason that it's so packed. Nice lunch counter and decor is fun and clean. Highly recommended. Great staff, salads, breakfasts and everything in between at a reasonable price with fast service. read more

This use to be my favorite diner in long beach up until they did the renovation. The food somehow changed a bit and I don't enjoy dining in anymore because it is so loud. I do enjoy the new interior design and the staff is always nice. I gave two stars because the pancakes and gyro platters are pretty good (have had better but no complaints here). My review is on my past 3 experiences which left me annoyed and wanting to return my food. I ordered the turkey burger and I am not sure what ingredients are used but the turkey burger tasted super gamey and something was just off about it. The other day I ordered an egg omelet with cheddar and spinach and asked them to hold off on the potatoes and toast. Being that the potatoes and toast came with the omelet I asked them to substitute the bread for a vegetable or extra spinach and was told this was not an option. I ended up just getting an omelet with spinach and cheddar and my total was $16! The eggs were just okay but the spinach was not even cooked through and the cheddar cheese wasn't even fully melted. For $16 I think that I should have had organic eggs and a breakfast done right (I can buy 8 cartons of a dozen eggs for this price). On another occasion I ordered the Waldorf salad and the lettuce tasted like pure dirt. The mixed greens had black gunk in it and the salad was clearly not freshly served. For the prices that they charge, they need to pay better attention to what they are serving. I wish management would review the menu and adjust accordingly. A $15 rotten/dirty salad and $16 for 3 eggs with spinach and cheese just doesn't cut it. ** In response to the comment below I appreciate the time taken to acknowledge my review. I gave two stars for the good experiences however I was not a yelper pre-renovation which explains why I wasn't around to comment back then. I understand that the pricing at chipotle is higher for a burrito however chipotle is not in the same lane as the diner and I did not order a burrito. If compared to Diner by the Sea then I would understand but even there I can get an omelet with spinach and cheese cooked properly and for less than $16. I understand paying the staff and having fresh eggs decides the pricing but that pricing included potatoes and bread which I opted not to get. I understand that this was my decision but which ever way this is viewed, 3 eggs, cheese and spinach was nearly $20 and not cooked through. I appreciate that the lettuce is triple washed and from working in the restaurant industry I am also aware of its packaging. My issue was paying the price for food to eat only to receive a salad that was not edible. Pricing is an issue on the salad because I purchased it and the leaves we black with gunk, I expected to pay and eat not pay and throw away. This is a quality issue and from my past few experiences I have came to the conclusion that there is a lack when it comes to attention to detail. I did not write my review based off of one item that I didn't like but instead I wrote my review on 3 items that I fell short from (my opinion) being acceptable. Thanks for your time. read more

This is a family favorite! Lively atmosphere, attentive, friendly wait staff and good homestyle cooking. Clean and tastefully remodeled. Banana pancakes are delish! I usually go for the Santorini Salad and add salmon. It's a huge salad (enough for 2 people) with organic greens, feta, walnuts, dries cranberries and a balsamic vinaigrette. I came into the Laurel and I was greeted immediately. I sat down and there was someone to take my order right away. Overall pretty fast service. I had a strawberry milkshake so no comment on the food but the milkshake was excellent. They had music playing witch added to the atmosphere. It's pretty everything you expect from a dinner. The staff is nice, the service is quick and my milkshake was outstanding. Only thin I would change is that it was pretty cold in there but other than that I love the place and will most likely be returning. read more

their blueberry muffins, OMG!! Big, bountiful in the blueberry distribution, and buttery! They cut it in half and give it an extra layer of crispy toasty-ness before serving, and it is just divine. The friendly neighborhood diner feel of this place is very endearing. The wait wasn't too bad, the decor has some old-time charm. I liked the tall coat/scarf racks at each booth, that was a nice touch. Lots of breakfast/brunch options here, you can't go wrong. Portions are big, be warned! I hate leaving food to go to waste, so I took my leftovers in a to-go box and enjoyed a wonderfully filling breakfast the next day, lol! I tried Laurel's version of Eggs Benedict (although eggs benedict was also on the menu), which were poached eggs on top of an english muffin with bacon and cheese. I go less often because of the lines. a 20-30 minute wait for eggs is a bit much. the steak and eggs are exceptional. if you like steak, this borders on ridiculous, and you should try it. the specials are really good too for lunch or dinner. I do wish they would just raise the prices, say 20% so less price shoppers would come, and keep the quality high. keep raising price until the line is 10 mins long. even though it's the best, I don't like going and standing packed so tightly for 20 mins or more for breakfast. I think the bottom line is, it is pretty hard to make anything _that_ good. but it's the best in long beach, and it's just the best executed diner for about 30 minutes driving time. it's a five star diner, I dropped a star for the long lines. how about making an app for the wait list? Update: 2/23/19 Well, prices raised, portion sizes have shrunk. Lines on weekend out the door. So much for my theory. The quality of the skirt steak served on the steak and eggs seems to have declined --and/or the cook it on a frying surface instead of a real grill. Not sure but quality and taste has fallen since their big re-opening. Lack of competition may have something to do with it. Still a good diner, and very busy, but not as good as it used to be. As far as diners go, this one is great. The staff is amazingly nice and the food is really good. I recently went with three other people. Each one of us got the same exact thing (salmon burger) and everyone said it was the best they ever had. The spinach pie we had to start with was great, as was the matzoh ball soup (but you do have to add a bit of salt). Decor: this is your typical diner, nothing fancy. My wife and I made our regular Wednesday visit to the Laurel today which happened to be our anniversary. We visit at least once a week and are always pleased with the good and service. Tonight I feasted on paella. The dish was excellent, with plentiful seafood, perfectly done. The chorizo was pleasantly spicy and the rice moist and flavorful. It was well presented in a large pan, garnering ooh's and aah's from all assembled. I have dined on paella in many times in many restaurants and this was one of the best I have ever eaten. The rest of the meal, from my wife's steak tidbits, Ro & Ellen's Cobb salad and Doug's chicken Caesar wrap were all excellent. And those waffle fries were to die for. This place is a must! read more

Consistently good food. Service friendly and prompt, decent portion sizes, very well priced for what you get. Can never complain, been here at 1 am, and weekend lunchtimes in the summer, had to wait during peak times but never waited whilst looking at empty tables. And always worth the wait if you are hungry. Can't quite class myself as a regular here but will happily be one. The specials I have had a couple of times, today being the Cobb salad with turkey, salad you say? Believe me you get enough meat, bacon, and avocado to not think of the huge plateful as just a salad. The best diner ever. Service and food is top notch. It's all fresh and your coffee cup is always filled. Professional waiters and waitresses throughout. I used to go to JoJo apples in point lookout but that place is off my list due to terrible service and moldy toast. Yes, the prices can be high but the quantity and quality are worth it. That being said I can get 2 eggs, hash browns, and toast, all fresh and delivered to my table in 5 minutes, all for $9 out the door with tip. A great value for great good. This is a great diner and my new regular spot. The dinner fare was good, the food is fresh, portions are quite generous, and prices are reasonable. It's easy to see why they're always busy. My burger was awesome- they have lots of great toppings selections and the (large) burger patty was cooked well. French fries are so good here too! Not overly fried or soggy but taste really crisp and freshly made. Sweet potato fries look good too, will try those next time. Service is pretty great- servers are nice and attentive. read more

I selected this diner based on the yelp reviews since I had two choices Long Beach Diner and Laurel. The reviews were spot on for Laurel. The food was delicious, my Reuben sandwich was huge and popping with freshness. The server was a 35-45 y.o. male and he was spot on it. Never had to ask for my drink to be filled, he automatically took care of it. He checked frequently to see if anything was needed but not so many times to be annyoing. This is the last time I'll get delivery from this place. When you go there it's great, but the waiters are there to make sure your food looks good and the way it should by the time it gets to the table. However for to-go orders, the cooks will just slop it into the tin container without a care. Between that and the delivery driver caring even less how he man-handles your bag, by the time you open it up, your food it looks like it went through the spin cycle in your washing machine...just paid $25 for a sandwich and it looked like total crap. They should have someone overseeing the food and doing quality control between the cook and the delivery guy. And I don't just mean the person putting the food in the bag, it should be really looked over like someone cared how it was prepared. The only reason this happens is because the place is so busy and they don't need the business but that's still not right. *My reply to below; Then you should chalk this one up as an oversight because I had to put the entire sandwich back together. And do you really think I wanted to wait ANOTHER 45 minutes to get my food! I like these little diners, sometimes you find a diamond in the rough. In the case of the Laurel Diner, I did not. I tried the place a couple times and I will say this, the service is impeccable, to the point of almost being over the top. As for the food, it's average, which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for the prices. I understand it's a prime location and the rent must be a fortune, but if I'm going to spend that kind of money at a diner, the food had better be more than just average. read more

Whoa!!!! I usually have a great meal at the Laurel,but this morning? I ordered a chorizo and cheddar omelette and it was one of, if not the worst, omelettes I've ever had. It was dry, flavorless and had an oily taste to it. The fries were over cooked and flavorless as well. Has the laurel fallen victim to the battalions of geriatric customers that can only tolerate bland, un-seasoned faire? I ordered chorizo because I wanted a spicy kick to my meal, something of a pick me up to further enhance a morning that was off to a great start. Until........... The meal landed in the pit of my stomach with a resounding THUD, a complete and utter disappointment from an otherwise decent eatery. The fries were an insult to all things potato and had more in common with a birds nesting materials than something found on a human beings breakfast plate. Come on guys!!!! Maybe this place is friendly for locals, but when we went here they looked at us like we were speaking chinese, instead of good ole Kentucky. Service was grudging at best, and downright rude most of the time. Got nickel and dimed on our breakfasts when we added something. Menu showed $2 extra for turkey bacon which is fine - when bill arrived they added $5 each for "turkey slice" - no mention of that on the menu. No idea why this place is so busy - went across the street to the Long Beach Diner the next day. Much cleaner, bigger menu, reasonable prices and the folks there are friendly. The place is always buzzing with locals. Breakfast specials are priced within reason. We are fortunate to have at least three local diners in town, all which are acceptable. In short, ditto on much of what Ethan said. Food is standard yummy, greasy diner fare, which is good if you're looking to set your diet back a few pounds. The decor could use a face lift to make it look cleaner and more appealing, and the wait staff is often slow and inattentive though cheerful and friendly. Since the East Bay Diner in Oceanside closed, this is the place we've "settled for" in my family, but it sort of falls short (though it's probably the best in the area). read more

This place seems like your run of the mill diner and I was ready to keep walking until I read a few reviews on Yelp and gave it a try. The staff are professional and friendly. The menu is pretty basic stuff. I ordered the rodeo burger (guac, raw onion slices and cheddar cheese). It was moist and delicious. Totally melt in your mouth good. I've been coming to the Laurel for over 15 years. As a matter of fact, there were different owners the first few years i started coming here, and it was with great trepidation we all viewed the change. But the Loucas family took a great place and made it even better. Food is always fresh and delicious, staff is friendly and helpful, and the owners make you feel like family. I've brought my own family to the Laurel because i know they'll enjoy it and be treated well. My friends and i even have our birthday meals here because it's got the right vibe for a warm celebration! Menu gets updated every so often with new items, but the standards are flawless.
