Had the best time tonight at LATHA! In addition to the fantastic food, the entire experience was unique and wholesome. Everyone was so kind and we were "guided" through the menu. We even got to meet the owner, which was great! After a delicious meal, we checked out their store where they have only locally sourced or sourced from Africa items, so cool. We went for dinner here last night during Restaurant Week. We were told that there was no grouper on the Price Fixe but that salmon was available. We ordered salmon and pork chops on the price fixe. Then we were told that the pork chop was not available so that was switched to mushroom entry. Then we were told that the mushrooms were not available and we switched to chicken. After a patron at the next table was informed that the salmon was not available, we then inquired with our waiter who confirmed that. Since we were now 1-1/2 hours into the affair, we cancelled our entrees and left. The owner manager stopped by several times to check on us and then apologize but failed to offer complimentary drinks or appetizers. Instead she suggested that we check with her the next time we visited for a full dining experience, presumably at our own expense. The ambiance, appetizers, drinks, and vibe were great but the service was abysmal. I can understand that a restaurant can run out of a particular item. But the turnaround time on these discoveries was 20-25 minutes and were sequential. Although the restaurant had 4.5 stars, we looked at the 1-2 star reviews after we returned home. They were similar to ours in terms of the food shortage. The restaurant has a lot of potential but truly needs to get its act together. This would be a perfect entry for Chef Ramsey to critique and rebuild. read more

We went here before a show at Celebrity Theater and it was absolutely delicious. We loved every bite of what we had. I tried the shrimp with broccolini and rice and a chimichurri. For added spice, the brought me a small vessel of berbere to pinch into my food. YUM! We also ordered the fried fish and it was flaky, moist and incredibly flavorful. Try the fava bean hummus to start. I can't stop thinking of how I can recreate that flavor in my own home! Service was impeccable and we had a nice visit from the owner. The restaurant is a celebration of pan-African foods and the staff employed represent black excellence. It was a lovely and warm experience to eat at Latha and we are itching to come back and try more foods on the menu with friends! Pro-tip: Recommend a reservation as it fills up fast on the weekends! The bar dining experience absolutely fabulous. Hands down 5 stars. The bar staff is up beat, vibrant, and tenative. The store/shop - is a scammed. $55 for a skirt no problem. $65 for pants no problem. No price given for a scarf but surely it could not be more than the skirt and pants. total $185. The math was not mathing. Maybe she thought she had drunk customers. Clearly she needed more than me. I supposed. I left my review of this experience to never patronize the store again. The food here is amazing, the service is phenomenal, and the staff is truly sincere in their interactions with you - they truly hit the ball out of the park! I like to sit at the bar, enjoy a few freshly curated cocktails from the extremely knowledgeable mixologists, and work my way to and through a delicious meal. During my last visit, I shared the Mahi, the Shrimp, and a few side dishes with my mom and aunt who were visiting from NYC, and they said this experience was the highlight of their overnight stop in PHX to see me for my birthday. We enjoyed two delicious dinners at Latha during a work conference in Phoenix. First, the ambiance is so terrific - the welcoming hostess, servers, bartenders plus live music on weekends and the cutest shop inside - all first rate. Next, the food ... simply divine. We enjoyed almost all of the menu - the appetizers salads main dishes and desserts - over the course of two nights. First rate. Standouts are the whipped goat cheese, chicken wings, coconut sourdough rolls, mozqueca, that pound cake dessert. Lastly, the drinks paired well with the food. I will say that drinks were pricey...the cocktails were about $15/each which was steep. However that would not stop me from recommending Latha to anyone and everyone visiting downtown Phoenix. read more

Tried out Latha for the first time. I've never had African food before and the manager and staff were very hospitable. Our guide provided us with an overall review of the food and we were pleasantly treated with tasty drinks and meals. The service was slightly slower but overall we did love the taste of the food. This place is a vibe!! The food, drinks, live music and friendly staff made my birthday night extra special. We started with the piri piri wings which had so much flavor. I ordered the drunken elephant which was delicious - like a chocolate espresso martini. We ordered the honey and apple salad which not only looks beautiful but was so fresh and flavorful. Awaze shrimp had a creamy Mac and cheese with a charred shrimp but my favorite was the oxtails! Super tender, fall off the bone texture, absolutely amazing! The food here is great but the service is terrible. Both times I visited they were out of stock of more than one entree. My boyfriend called from Scottsdale on my birthday and tried to call in an order. He was told to wait until later in the day and was encouraged to wait for 4 to place my order. He did only to be told 35 minutes later that they had no chicken! He tried to order another entree so he didn't come home empty handed but he was told they didn't have ingredients for that dish either. It turned my birthday from a celebration to a catastrophe. It is incredibly frustrating to have a strong desire to support a business that is not concerned with meeting the demand with a sufficient amount of supply. They were out of the wings appetizer when we ordered them, so they gave us the last 1/2 order of wings they had complimentary and threw in a couple of the jollof fried rice balls with spicy Mayo which were very good. This was super thoughtful because other restaurants normally wouldn't do this so we appreciated it. Also gave us a complimentary alcoholic beverage to try in the beginning of the meal that was similar to a spiked eggnog which was good as well. Live singer at the from which is always nice and pleasant to hear. Food was good. Ordered the yogurt chicken and awaze strip steak. Portions were generous and food was tasty. Only thing is the menu online was different than the menu when we got there- not too different and not a big deal but just to keep in mind. No soda either but plenty of cocktails, juices, and n/a beverages as well. Overall pleasant experience and worth a try! read more

I've been wanting to try this restaurant since it opened. Loved the fun vibe with the decor. Our server was friendly and gave good recommendations. The drinks were unique and tasty and beautiful in appearance. The whipped goat cheese was the best thing we ate. It was so flavorful and delicious. The homemade bread was warm and oh so good. My main was disappointing. The chicken was moist and flavorful but the pasta it came on was cold and even though the menu stated that it came with forged mushrooms and spinach I didn't see either in the dish. It looked like there was some type of green beans instead. The charred broccolini was raw and ice cold. We did let our server and the manager know when they asked how the meal was about the food challenges. Maybe it was just a challenging night in the kitchen. I can't say I've ever seen nor visited a pan-African restaurant. That changed last night as we were looking for a place to have a drink or two and some appetizers before heading to the pizza place across the way (1.5 hour wait). We were greeted by the owner, Evelia Davis, and it felt like she was welcoming us into her home. She seated us at a table in a private room and told us a bit about the restaurant and the food. She suggested a few appetizers and drinks and we ordered. The Piri Piri chicken wings and the Whipped Goat Cheese and black pepper garlic sauce were so delicious we had at least 3 orders of each. She knew she had us hooked so suggested some entrees to share. We had the Dayboat Moqueca (fish), the Tumeric & Cumin Chicken Tajine, and Awaze Shrimp. They were all incredible, but the shrimp was the best I've had. Seriously. The next time in Phoenix I won't both getting on the waiting list for the famous pizza place...after an amazing 2-hour meal with Evelia, we still hadn't been called to the table at the other place. This beautiful restaurant lives up to its name in every way! The location and building have so much character and charm. The dining room is intimate and offers the perfect setting for a special night out. The bar is inviting and the inside shop smells amazing. I wish I had time to explore there a little more. Next trip. I have been spoiled with great African and Caribbean cuisine so I was excited to try the Hypha Mushroom Criollo. The seasoning was bold, unique, and delicious. This vegan dish had so much flavor. I tried my friends sea bass... it was buttery and perfectly cooked. I can't wait to come back and try the Jerk Pork Chop. The service brought the whole dining experience together. The staff was attentive and made sure that we had an enjoyable experience from the moment we walked onto the steps. I couldn't stop eating the Whipped goat cheese and Shrimp Aguachile, which had the perfect amount of spice. Big shout out to the bar tender Will, who made a Spicy Tamarind Margarita (tamarind infused mezcal, turmeric orange, lime, serrano simple, lime salt rim) Mezcal forward with a lot of spice and not sweet, bar far the best spin off of a margarita I have ever had. Our group of seven dined at Latha last night 10/16/25, all for the first time. It was a beautiful evening so we sat outside. The waitstaff and hostess are so friendly and checked often on our status as we had tickets for a program at a nearby theater. There is an appetizer and entree on the menu for people with a variety of palates. We order several appetizers to share including the whipped goat cheese, onion hummus, chicken wings, shrimp to name a few. Some of us got a chicken entree, I ordered a vegetarian dish and someone else ordered the fish. There are more entrees on the menu than included in the website. The beverage program is also very good with a variety of wines (several from South Africa), beer and cocktails. We all thoroughly enjoyed every appetizer, entree and drink. Our entrees were all severed at the same time, as were the appetizers. I cannot say enough good things about this new find. We all said we look forward to dining at Latha again, when we are downtown. read more

The vibe here....OUTSTANDING!!! Our reservation was for 7pm on a Saturday. As soon as we walked up the stairs we could hear a beautiful voice singing over the speakers. We walked through the door and a beautiful woman was singing soulful RnB at the door. We were greeted by the staff and the singer upon arrival and they were so positive! We started with the Upendo and the Praca Velha for drinks. The Upendo was delicious! I love Sorrel and tequila so this was great. If it were made with Mezcal.....it would have PERFECT for me! The Praca Velha was actually very flavorful as well! As an appetizer we had the Piri Piri wings which were a good flavor but I would have preferred a little more spice to it. If you're not big on spice these would be perfect for you! We also had the Pimento Cheese as an app and it was really good as well and the bread that it came with was not too hard or too soft. As for our main dishes, we had the Harissa Salmon and the Jerk Pork Chop. My husband LOVED his pork chops! He said that it was packed with flavor and the butternut squash rundown was a perfect pairing. The salmon had this amazing sauce mojito that paired PERFECTLY!! You MUST try this place!! All of the staff and the owner were amazing to spend the early evening with. We sat in the bar area, which was classy and cozy. The whole restaurant is fashioned in a old gentrified house and there's even a shop featuring artists from around the world of African descent. The chef is world class. The pimento cheese was creamy and adorned with beautiful crunchy watermelon radishes that did not deter from the cheese at all. The wings had a very unique and delicious flavor. My goodness, was this a fun and unique brunch treat. We had the whipped goat cheese dip: SO delicious, but I wish they served an appropriate amount bread to dip (we got like one piece for a good amount of dip). The chicken and waffles: the chicken was so flavorful and juicy, the waffle was a little dry but the flavor was so unique, it married well with the chicken. The salmon and grits: that sauce was divine and the salmon was flavorful, cooked well but the grits were too lumpy for my liking (but I might just be team smooth-grits, lol). The owner had been sitting on the front porch (which was such a cute space, by the way) and greeted us with genuine enthusiasm and thanks. The host was also immediately welcoming. We sat inside, which had beautiful African décor, but we were able to enjoy the DJ who was playing on the porch, which is a fun touch. We will definitely be returning! read more

We arrived for our 6:45 reservation on a Friday. One of our parties was a few minutes behind due to valet having a long line so we waited for her outside. We were offered water so we accepted not knowing we would be charged for it later. The porch outside is so cute and relaxing. Inside it is a bit cramped but that is expected. It is nice and the decor is cute. The little shop in the back is lively and smells amazing from all of the products. The staff is nice and down to earth. The owner even came by a few times to check in. She is so sweet! We were there for my friend's birthday and they do a special thing for birthdays that is cute and thoughtful. I won't ruin the surprise though. The food and drinks were tasty. We got the whipped goat cheese appetizer as well as the crab cornbread dressing. My critique for these would be that only one piece of bread is served with the goat cheese but 2 would be better due to the amount of spread that is given. If you want another piece of bread, there is a charge. The dressing was AMAZING but there was a thinly sliced something (not sure if it was the onions, greens, or an herb) that easily got caught in our throats. I actually choked a little so I would just rethink whatever that ingredient is. For drinks we got the sangria and passion fruit mojito which were both great, filled to the brim, and tasty. For our main dishes we got the salmon, shrimp moqueca, and sea bass dishes. All were SO GOOD and flavorful. The shrimp moqueca had some herb stems in it too that should have been removed, but it was good nonetheless. We were sadly too full for dessert so will have to come back and try it because they all sound yummy. It was a nice chill vibe and the music was great. Overall, it was a great experience minus the 2 things I mentioned regarding the herbs and being charged for water twice. Had we known there would be a charge for the water that we got on the porch while we waited AND the water at the table after we were seated, we would have just carried the water inside with us. I could rave about LATHA for days. It is a 10/10! From the moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty. The impeccably dressed host noticed my friend, and I were wearing heels and gracefully assisted us up the stairs. As Evelia showed us around, it became clear this place was special. The welcoming bar featured friendly and talented mixologists, and the beautifully curated shop immediately captivated my friend, who found a must-have dress in under three seconds. The dining areas felt like the coziest home, filled with delectable aromas wafting from the kitchen. Even before we sat down for our meal, I knew I would be coming back, a rarity for me as I always seek new dining experiences. Our group ordered a few rounds of craft cocktails, several appetizers, and a few main dishes to share. Each cocktail was thoughtfully crafted, and the flavors reflected the care put into them. The dishes were incredible, with highlights including the whipped goat cheese, the watermelon and avocado salad, the turmeric and cumin chicken, and a fish dish with crispy rice (whose name escapes me). What I love most about LATHA is the evident passion and excellence of everyone there. It didnt stop at exceptional food and service. Because it was three of our birthdays, they presented us with bracelets bearing our African names based on our birth day. It was a fun to learn my name is YAA!
