We were recommended this spot when visiting, and came for dinner on our first night out. They have all the classic tapas, and we got quite a few to share along with a pitcher of sangria. The sangria was a little watery for our taste, but not bad. The food came out quickly and we had quite a large spread - jamon, pan con tomate, patatas bravas, pork cheeks, spanish omelette, and calamari. Most of them were good, with my favorites being the pork cheeks, potatoes, and jamon. I would skip the spanish omelette next time as it wasn't quite up to what I was hoping for. This was one of the recommendations from my friend who's lived in Madrid for the the last 10+ years. For a chain restaurant, I think it's is close to as good as it gets. They don't take reservations so you have to wait in line, and depending on the time of night, it could take up to an hour wait. We came here on our first night in Madrid - it happened to be just around the corner from our hotel which was super convenient. We had a super late and big lunch that day, so we didn't go until around 11pm. It was a Friday night and we waited about 25min to get a table. It was quite cramped in there, with tables basically on top of each other, though that's typical in Europe. We started with a bottle of red and some small plates including octopus, ceviché, pork with caramelized onions, beef nigiri, etc. In fact, we actually ordered multiple orders of some of them cause they were so delicious! We were so incredibly full with the small plates we didn't get to order many of the other items from their extensive menu. I never thought I'd have room for dessert but when the server said they had hazelnut gelato I knew I had to get it. Well, let's just say we did not waste any of it! Even my husband who's normally not a sweets person ate his fair share cause it was so good! We had a great time there, and the prices were extremely reasonable. We liked it so much that we decided to come back 4 days later for lunch before heading to our next destination - Barcelona! read more

Great location but it is always busy. Suggest to make reservations or have a good group with you when having to wait 30 minutes or more. Everything on their menu is so good! This place was recommended to me by another yelper (thanks Briony) and it proved to be a great place to get some Tapas. Firstly it was tricky to find at first, hidden in a corner, but it is worth it so keep looking. By the looks of it there were very few tourists there and it seemed to be more locals which is always a good sign. We sat outside and they have the coolest sprinkler system that blasts you with water vapour every 20 seconds to keep you cool. It was just the ticket in that hot sunshine. Food was great . I LOVED the sirloin with cream cheese and the salmon with Brie was very good to. The Spanish omelette was fine, although if you asked Trudie M she would probably tell you it was awesome. It's a more upscale restaurant than most other tapa joints I've been to in Madrid, but yummy nonetheless. They do have an English menu and they have outdoor seating. It was a bit hot when I went (August) so we sat inside with the airconditioning :) We got the appetizer sampling, which included the Lateral appetizer, sirloin with caramelized onions, goat cheese with sweet red pepper, brie with salmon, ham croquette and prawn croquette. Everything was delicious except I didn't care much for the lateral appetizer (ironically). I really liked the croquettes! they were just oozing with flavor. The sirloin was also exceptionally good! We also got the avocado tartar with shrimps. I would suggest passing on this. Although the avocado was quite fresh, it wasn't anything particularly special. Wow, wow, wow! When I left here, I did nothing but think of which day I'd return to try more of their delicious foods. Trendy & upscale, but more like hipster clientele restaurant with a lovely outdoor patio for dining al fresco. I wish I could say there was something I ordered that wasn't as good as expected but there wasn't. Waitstaff was polite and professional, didn't forget a thing despite me thinking that they forgot my octopus leg but that came out too before I had a chance to inquire about it. I've learned that in Spain, more so than Italy, they don't rush you when you sit down to a meal. My daughter and I were there about 1 hour, 30 minutes which is a lifetime in any NYC restaurant. I won't boar you with too many details of the meal, but it's worth saying that everything we ordered was perfect! From the drizzle of truffle oil on the burrata and tomato salad, to the "fall off the bone" meat of the bull tail to the sweet grilled onions on the hamburger, everything was incredible. Highly recommend if you're in Madrid, but they seem to have restaurants in Malaga, Monaco & Barcelona as well. The mojitos are awesome. They have multiple variations, some on the sweet side, so be careful, because they go down easily. Everything is tapas and raciones, so it's good to go with people and share. You must try the goat cheese (queso de cabra), lettuce, and roasted red pepper on toast (super good). The artichokes are ok, but there's a TON of fried ham on top, and it would have been better to leave it freshly sliced. Skip the albondigas -- they're dry and the Saudi is kind if salty. Nice decor and a good-size patio. It's on a busy walking street, so expect big crowds and lots of tourists. read more

Nestled in a cute corner next to Starbucks on Fuencarral, this place lived up to all expectations and damned any negative review that could exist. We had the opportunity to get a terrace seat at 830/9 pm (right before they got hella busy). Everything was amazing. Let's start with the coco y banana mojito...amazing. Inspired is to get two more...the fruta de los bascos, and the watermelon. All great, but the coco takes the cake. Amazing. Get it. You won't regret it. The tapas were amazing as well. Great place for tapas and a drink. Perfect location to enjoy Madrid at night on their patio. The place is popular and you should be ready for a 20 minutes wait most nights, but you can have a drink inside at the bar while waiting, you won't regret it. Above average tapas for a reasonable price in a swanky atmosphere. We walked away feeling overall pleased with the food (4.5 stars), but the service was a bit strange (2.5 stars). Once we were seated, the server handed us menus in Spanish but didn't offer English menus. Most people were sitting outside, but we were inside, and even though she walked by us half a dozen times, I couldn't manage to catch her eye to ask if she had an English-language menu. I got tired of waiting and just walked up to the hostess stand and grabbed an English menu, which I was grateful they had. We then had to wait about 10 minutes for our waitress to re-acknowledge our existence, and even though I tried being polite and using some Spanish to order, she didn't say a word to us from that point on. Even when I would ask for water, or order say, "Gracias," I would get nothing in return. It was just bizarre. When one of the things we ordered was obviously misunderstood, because we got something else, I didn't bother to say anything, because it just didn't seem worth it. OK, enough complaining. The food: - Melted Brie with caramelized pepper - Creamy and well-prepared pepper. - Tempura of vegetables with tzaziki - veggies julienned and fried with yogurt sauce. Quite good. - Potatoes with spicy sauce (Las Bravas) - your standard patatas las bravas, nicely fried, actually. - I ordered the Meatball appetizer, which I really wanted, but got Goat cheese with red pepper preserves, which was pretty darn good. So, I'd order it again. We also ordered a bottle of the house red, which was decent, but slightly misleading, as the bottles were only 0.5 liters (1/3 less than a normal bottle). I love Lateral! I have been to every location and they are always stylish and spacious, buzzy and fun, and the tapas and drinks are well-priced. I usually get the fried eggplant with salmorejo, the solomillo toast with carmelized onions, the croquetas, the pan cristal with jamon, the spinach salad with goat cheese and oh, those amazing mini hamburgers! The food is always consistent and the house wine is lovely and a steal at 12 euros. One thing, it can get very very crowded. Since I work for myself, I get around this by going to eat outside the Spanish dining times of 2-4 and 9-11. Drop in in a weekday around 13:30 and enjoy! read more

Ordered food, forgot beer, ordered beer, forgot beer, ordered beer finally got beer, food was good that we did get, forgot cheese quesadilla, ordered it again still no quesadilla. Got someone else involved he finally got our quesadilla. Our first waiter finally comes back to check if we want dessert I declined he proceeds to make us wait another 25 minutes to pay, as we wait I watch the table next to us going through the same as us the also get frustrated and decided to go somewhere else for dessert. Not one time does management stop by to apologize for the horrible service, when the manager finally stopped by he says nothing just runs my credit card with not even an acknowledgement. Everytime I go, it doesn't disappoint me. I've gone to Lateral more than once not just for dinner or lunch but also to enjoy a drink with friends. It is, for sure, one of the best places to meet up with friends and enjoy some food and drinks. I personally like better the one located in plaza de Santa Ana, although you have to be careful about your personal stuff if you decide to sit outside. If i were you, I would give it a try. As others have said it's a great place for a light meal when you have not quite transitioned to the Spanish way of eating your evening meal at 10pm. A little pricy by spain small plates standards but the plates are more interesting than usual tapas fare. We had a ceviche, meatballs and a deep fried eggplant with dips, and a black rice with calamari and associated wines. It is quite popular so on a nice night it's hopping and crowded but people move through quickly. I guess I would say if you were looking for the traditional Spanish tapas experience this isn't it.
