this place is more like a 3.5 out of 5 stars. this was our last meal in europe... sigh, i wish we were still on our vacation, but alas, we must return back to reality. during our last night in madrid we were on the hunt for paella. There were plenty of places to pick from in downtown madrid, but some restaurants were closed, and others were not offering it that early for dinner. sidenote: i find it weird that spanish people eat dinner so late!!!! anyways, we started the meal off with a meat and cheese plate and got the seafood paella. they also gave us bread along with tomato paste. honestly the tomato paste was very very simple and reminded me of salsa...lol. the food portions are huge! make sure you come here with a very hungry stomach or multiple people. paella actually comes with 4 different options: seafood, chicken, mixed or something else. and for 10 bucks, you really cant go wrong with whatever you choose. The one thing i would comment on the paella is that it wasn't as flavorful as i imagined... but really can't complain for the price i paid. the service is very quick, and the person who was taking my order spoke english and was really helpful. read more

Nice tapas spot amongst many other spots. Service was very inattentive, not a huge deal for us but we had to flag down the waiter for rounds of drinks and to pay. Croquettes and the patatas with 2 sauces were great, calamari was very rubbery and chewy though and we only ate two pieces. Giving 4 stars because the plates were HUGE and could def feed a lot of people for cheap, so if you're not in a rush it's a good place to stop and grab some food for cheap (just avoid the calamari). read more

Ducked into this little gem for some drinks and time to enjoy the outdoor area. The service was great as were the tapas that came out with the more than reasonably priced establishment. This area that the place is located in is just off the main drag. As soon as you step into this area you see the prices drop significantly. I recommend the Ramon Bilbao wine here. I had some sliced cured meat as well as some other good stuff.They have the type of tapas where it's a small slice of break and then slices of cured meat, smoked salmon, or other stuff on it. Steer clear of the bustling crowds and the tourist traps stuffed full of gullible travelers thinking they're getting some real Spanish culture and typical food. Wander further down, take that cobble stone alley less traveled and pull up to a sidewalk table for a really fine meal and some local wines (under €3!). Wow, we really liked it here. Close enough to lots of hotels, scenic plazas and those crowds of people, this spot really delivered. Our waitress (from Romania who spoke great English) gave us English menus and some advice. Don't order as much food as you think you'll want. The servings here are huge. How about pork and Brie? Fabulous. An appetizer? Many to choose from. And she was right. We were stuffed. La Descubierta was a lifesaver for this hungry tourist in Madrid. I was walking around downtown Madrid, when I got the sudden urge for Spanish food and Sangria. Luckily, I had service and fired up my trusty Yelp app to find this restaurant. Nestled in a quiet side-street near La Puerta de Sol, it's the perfect spot to take a break from touring, sit down, have something to eat and enjoy a drink. I originally sat inside, but it was pretty empty and it was a nice day out, so they let me change my table to one of the outdoor seats. It was a really cute view of all of the old Spanish architecture and all of the hustle and bustle of the surrounding restaurants. The menu was completely in Spanish, so I wasn't sure what *everything* said, so I asked the server for her recommendations. I got 2 tostas (with meat and sauces for 5.50 each), which are not tapas - they're much larger and 1 is really suitable for 1 person. They were incredible and I finished them both, don't judge me. They also gave me 2 tapas on the house after I initially ordered, which was really cool. I also ordered 2 vasos of sangria (just a cup) for 2.80 each. As if I hadn't gorged myself enough, I then ordered tarte de chocolate (chocolate cake), which was U N R E A L. I think my server was terrified by me by the end of my meal, because of how much and quickly I ate. #NoRagrets All in all, all of this food was like 19 euros, which was a steal in my eyes, especially if you're on vacation and don't have a problem splurging. La Descubierta was one of my favorite tapas places I ate at on my trip to Spain. The food was delicious, the servers were helpful, and the environment was very fun! We ordered a variety of tapas to share and enjoy with the table. They offer all of your classic tapas, plus some unique and interesting options. With a round of drinks they bring out a complimentary tapa as well! My favorite thing we ordered was the tosta with solomillo iberico, quest brie, and pimientos. The flavor was out of this world! I wanted it all to myself. Highly recommend! We also had the patatas con dos salsas (Bravas and aioli), the calamari, mussels (Galician), pork, and Descubierta Salad. The calamari was lightly fried and very fresh. I think probably my favorite fried calamari I had! We ordered the mussels Galician style. The broth was slightly spicy, and very delicious! My dad was obsessed, and soaked it all up with bread when we were done. Both the sauces on the patatas were very flavorful and the potatoes were nice and crispy outside, but soft on the inside. The Descubierta salad came with avocado and a ceviche like mix of fish. Very yummy! The pork was cooked perfectly and came covered with a delicious sauce. It also came with fries. We loved this place, but its hard to find if you don't have Google Maps. Not a tourist trap --- prices are down to earth. Roast Chicken 7 euros, Paella 8 euros. We found La Descubierta on Yelp and it looked like a solid place with the current 4.5 star review when we were there, which has dropped to a 4 star now. I probably liked it better than my wife and mother in law so the three stars is an average of the group. We thought the service was very short and wasn't very frliendly. This could be an off night or a rarity compared to the rest of the servers. It definitely wasn't a highlight of the meal. We had the patatas dos salsas and the sauce reminded my wife of Campbell's Tomato soup. We also had the espaguetis with shrimps which was very simple pasta with tiny shrimp. I ordered the Mejillones a la Gallega and the Pimientos de Padrón, which I was a little bit worried about because I'm wary of ordering things that are spicy. They also give really big portions, so know that going in The ambiance is homey and warm, with rich colors on the walls and and terrace as well, however it gets 4 stars because the tables, chairs, and cutlery etc. left a lot to be desired. Nice to know about this local, unpretentious spot. I started with a cold beer and salted-cod and marinated red pepper tapa. I followed with the Tosta de Solomillo Iberico, Queso Brie y Pimientos, or Spanish sirloin with brie and peppers on toast. I was not as blown away as previous patrons with this dish but it definitely does the job. The staff are quite friendly however and even with the popularity of this place, it is easy enough to walk in, at least to the bar. read more

Sure I barely ate much of what we got but what I did try was tasty. I mostly focused on the potatoes and the pork loin tapas. They were delicious as was the wine. We had a spanish speaker with us so we got by just fine and even still she understood us when we were speaking English for our orders (to our translator hahah). Either way, this was probably the worst meal we had in Madrid. I'd give this place two stars only because the service was good and the portions were large for the price. The portions in my opinion were actually too large; we weren't able to try multiple tapas since the server stopped us at three dishes. Had dinner here on a Monday night around 8pm, and it was pretty packed towards the end of our dinner. We weren't seated promptly and felt a little lost, but service was fine after that. We received a complementary toast with tomato and manchego which was great to start the night. Then we had the jamon iberico, and the Galician mussels (delicious, no sand which is a huge pro). Their tomate spread is fresh and so yummy on the bread. Got the patatas bravas as well which were not my favorite but the portion was HUGE. Mussels were a large portion too.
