First night in Madrid and hunger crept up on us after a long nap. The magic of Spain is that the food scene is just as vibrant if not more at night. We found Más al sur near our hotel and so glad we did. Our server was kind and helpful and the food was sooo good! The bacalao particularly. The restaurant is modern but very cozy, definitely a must return.
As a tourist, you can take my review with a grain of salt, but these were the best tapas we had in Madrid. Didn't feel touristy to us, although there were other tourists dining in. It's located in the quaint Lavapiés neighborhood. We dined in on a Monday evening around 8PM, with no reservation. As we were leaving, it started getting busier. We split half an order of the ropa vieja, half an order of the croquetas, half an order of the boletus (mushroom) risotto, the Lomo bajo ternera, and the pastel de zanahoria (carrot cake). Our total was €74 with 2 beers (4,90 each) and a mojito (8,50). I LOVED the boletus in the risotto and croquetas- such a rich and flavorful taste. We enjoyed the fresh chips accompanying the ropa vieja for some textural crunch. The accompanying sauce and Pimientos de Padrón were great with the rare steak. I love carrot cake, and was surprised to see it on so many Spanish menus. The main difference is they use a whipped cream frosting in comparison to American cream cheese, so it is lighter and less sweet- but not any less good than American carrot cake. Would definitely come back!
My friends and I were excited to try this Spanish restaurant with great reviews. There was a wait however the line moved extremely fast, and it was one of the restaurants that opened late. The restaurant was cozy and had many locals dining in. We ordered the garlic shrimp and the Seafood Paella which we were most excited to try. Our waiter was a little passive-aggressive when we wanted to change to a table with a little more room. The small-sized garlic shrimp (4 pieces) came out first and before the rest of the food came out, my friend had already finished her shrimp because the waiter forgot to add the side of rice to our order. The shrimp was warm and flavorful. I was disappointed with the paella because it was dry on the outside and mushy in random parts of the rice. The salmon was extremely dry and the rice tasted better with lemon. It seemed like a busy day because it was difficult to get the bill and it seemed like there was a delay in the kitchen.
Came here for dinner. The place is cozy but we managed to get a table right away. Our server was very nice and funny. We ordered the cheese plate, croquettas, grilled scallops, ropa vieja, grilled vegetables, and sangria. The cheese plate was a delightful mix of different items served with jam and nuts. The croquetas were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and gooey inside. The grilled scallops were tasty and fresh. Ropa vieja was tender with generous amounts of sauce served on chips. The grilled vegetables were packed with flavor and had a nice char. The sangria was sweet and refreshing. They even gave us complimentary digestives after! Such a wonderful place for a meal in Madrid.
Food here was to die for! Had huevos rotos ( fried eggs over fried crispy potatoes and Spanish ham ), fried crispy eggplant with a sweet honey sauce (crujientes de berenjena) garlicky shrimp (gambones al ajillo ) and mushroom croquettes (croquetas de boletus) . We rather have the ham croquettes but they had ran out of them.The place has such a nice atmosphere. We had a reservation, came for breakfast/brunch around 11:00 am and the place was pretty empty . Not sure exactly what they gave us but they gave us some sort of juice shot. It was a delicious treat to end up brunch.Service was good.

The empanada, with its flaky crust and savory filling, was also a highlight. the risotto was rich and creamy, with a perfect balance of flavors. What truly sets Mas al Sur apart is its impeccable staff. The team was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make the dining experience memorable. Overall, Mas al Sur exceeded my expectations. The combination of delicious food, cosy atmosphere, and outstanding service makes it a must-visit restaurant in Madrid. Más Al Sur is a small restaurant that many locals seem to frequent. It has a bar-esque interior with darker bricks and enough space to just walk in and get a table. Emiliano was our server, and he was very attentive and friendly. He even gave me and my friend free shots and took one with us! The prices here are lower than usual, as well, when looking at comparable restaurants. It is very central and was walkable from our hotel in the city. We ordered the seafood paella, grilled vegetables, and Asian-inspired noodles. The Asian noodles were around a 2.5/5. They had a distinct Asian flavor but were also very sweet. There seems to be a lot of sugar in this dish which was off putting. The seafood paella was alright at a 3/5. Not bad and not memorable. It wasn't too fishy, which was nice, but only came with one shrimp and a couple clams. There were lots of squid pieces, though. The grilled vegetables were a 4/5 and tasted as expected. The goat cheese it came with was nice and not too goaty. Friendly service and easy to get a table. Prices were accurate according to what was given. Emiliano is awesome!

After spending several hours at the Reina Sofia, Jamie W and I were feeling quite peckish and rather indecisive about where to have lunch. We guessed many options around the Prado area might be tourist traps. Fortunately, this didn't appear to be one of them as it's a taberna that attracts local regulars as well as tourists like us. The manager/owner looked to know quite a few customers. It was pretty busy, so we were seated at a hi-top table in the bar area next to other non-Spanish, English-speaking customers. There were many small-to-medium tapa plates to consider in their menu. We weren't looking to stuff ourselves, so we ordered the 6,9€ half-order of Chiporones à la Plancha, which was grilled baby squids nestled on a mixed salad drizzled with balsamic (Photo 10). Our second dish was the 6,1€ half-order of Parrillada Verdu. It was a simple but satisfying grilled vegetable platter of sliced tomato,, onion, and root veggies (Photo 9). The last dish we ordered was an unexpected taste of home, the 9,9€ Ensalada Cesar. The reason for the higher price point was the addition of chicken and bacon to the lettuce, tomato, cheese, croutons, and Caesar dressing (Photo 8). The combination was pretty hearty and familiar-tasting. Even though we probably ate enough for a mid-afternoon meal, I couldn't help but inquire about the availability of grilled octopus (pulpo) because we saw it look quite tempting on a neighboring table. It was just as well that they were out because we didn't have room in our bellies for that. Our tapas selection was just fine all on its own. Just mas please!!! Best sangria we have ever had! Outstanding seafood. So fresh and ample fruit, great amount and flavor. Ample inside dining and some outdoor patio dining. About 15 minutes to Atocha station. Helpful service. Pluses A. Best sangria we have had 1. Scallops on the shell were amazing so light and fresh 2. Grilled cuttlefish were nicely charred 3. Octopus was large amount and with potato / he loved it, I thought it was too spicy for me. 4. Grilled shrimp with the heads so juicy in the head 5. Caramel dessert was good 6. We got free shots, twice and yes very good 7. Great value food Areas to improve 1. Bathrooms Highly recommended for sangria and seafood!! Happy faces on the diners. read more

This is the very first stop we did in Madrid. And it could not have been more perfect. It was a few blocks from our hotel, and it's a very small and cozy tapas place. The first thing we ordered of course was the sangria and it was the best one we had in the whole trip. Both in presentation and taste by far. We also got the grilled octopus, tuna tartare, and a couple of all the things and everything was amazing. Service was good. People in Spain are not friendly, chatty and smiley when they serve you. They just take your order and bring it to you and get the job done. This is not a lack of Customer Service it's just the way things are. Decor is very eclectic, it has a wood cabin vibe. The outside has only a couple of tables. The place is small but it gets quite crowded, you need reservations for dinner. I believe there's a bigger dining room in the back, but I didn't see it. It was an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend just for the sangria and the octopus alone! read more

By far the best dining experience I've had. From the US here on vacation, food was absolutely immaculate; quality ingredients and phenomenal presentation. The service is beyond the textbook, finished our dinner with a shot for dessert and a shot with the bill. Overall, ambiance and look of our drinks along with the rest of the restaurant might be the best I've experienced. If you want QUALITY food and PHENOMENAL service, as a tourist, come to Más Al Sur. They will treat you like family!! read more
Mas Al Sur is a small, unpretentious little restaurant with great food and drinks, and good efficient service. We had a great grilled octopus and potatoes; a great Tuna Tartare; and Salmon in Cheese. For drinks we started with sangrias, which were refreshing and had great presentation. We followed the sangria with several glasses of wine. Everything was to our liking and we would recommend if you ate in the area. read more
One night during our trip, we were looking around for the best paella and chanced upon this restaurant. We were immediately greeted and seated by the friendly waiter. The food and drinks here was very good, accompanied by the amazing local crowd! There was a little band going around the restaurant taking song requests where the entire section of the restaurant would then sing-a-long. Despite only knowing two songs, it was so fun to watch everyone else sing their hearts out. We also met a local gentleman that was an architect and he educated us on the jamon iberico and also the hummus. It was a pleasure to chat with some local folks to learn more about the culture in Madrid. In the end, he even gifted me a portrait of myself that he drew on the spot! They were closing the bar and ran out of the strawberry daiquiri, but the bar tender gave us a little sampler that was excess from the last drink. It was really nice of him! Overall would definitely come back if I'm ever in Madrid again. read more

Absolutely delicious and great value! The pulpo was Excellent and the Paella was delish, I have had better paellas, but I have had the Best and we are in Madrid far away from fresh seafood. But their paella is Good! But I would return for some meat choices. The service was excellent and desert also YUMMY!! Super recommended! read more
Really excellent place! Glad we found it on Yelp. The jamón was some of the best I've ever had in Spain and I've lived here. The crujiente de berenjena was absolutely delicious. I have no words for the risotto and pulpo because they were both just spectacular. Nice atmosphere, great service, excellent tasty and freshly cooked meal. Can't beat this place! It will be hard not to come here again the next time we are in town. read more

The risotto with jamón Was so good and Rich and a little bit mind blowing. The shrimps were also amazing, but got less good as it got colder. Scallops were also very good. read more

Boo Boo and I came here for dinner. Our airbnb host suggest this place. We came here around 8:30pm and it was almost a full house. I got the Roja vieja and Boo Boo ordered the seafood paella and we shared the Mediterranean salad. The seafood paella complemented well with the white wine I got. There was a good mix of locals and others when we were there. I liked that we could order half servings so you can try other dishes if needed. English was understandable but stick to Espanol. read more
