Located just outside of Puerta de Sol. This is a great place to enjoy Espana tapas and a drink! The tapa portions are very large: the small size anchovies, contains two pieces of bread with 5 white anchovy fillets, diced onions, green olives, drizzled with olive oil. For a savory entree, I recommend the oxtail stew: 10 pieces of delectable oxtails in a brown gravy sauce. This tasted more like a beef pot roast, rather than a tomato style gravy. Had early dinner after arriving to Madrid by train. Didn't need a reservation, they had plenty of seating and it was comfortably spaced for groups. Very family kitchen feel with the tiles, wood, and decorations. Food was good with large portions, the service was quick and very friendly. We like the homey feel of the place and it really feels like this restaurant had been around for ages. Would say the paella to avoid, it wasn't as good as the ones we had gotten from Seville. Most of the tapas were more carb heavy than balanced we've experienced so far in our trip. Recommend here if you're looking to be fed at an affordable price and quickly seated, but it isn't a place to go out of your way for. read more

HORRIBLE!!! We ordered the "Churrasco" thinking it was a typical skirt steak. Nope. It was a very cheap cut of meat with bones throughout. It was so tough that I gave up trying to chew it. This spot was the one for our first Tapas dinner for this Madrid visit. Roomy inside with some outdoor seating. Empty as we were early for dinner around 7 so we took a table outside. They do have a Sister location next door -difference is less Tapas and Paella is on the menu. We started with Sangria and the Alhambra house brew. The Beer was billed as an IPA but tasted more like an Ale-very good. The Sangria was a bit sweet and refreshing. Complimentary Manchego cheese was a nice touch. Our Server warned us that their Tapas are larger than the typical size and she wasn't kidding-more like Tapas on steroids. We started with the Goat Cheese with onion and blueberry sauce. I don't think I've had fried Goat cheese and this was delicious. Blueberry sauce takes it over the top. Tortilla Omelette (Spanish Omelette) was filled with eggs/onions-very good. Last Tapa was the Cured Iberian Loin. Again, big portion. The surprise was the flat chicken breast and peppers under the Loin. This one was ok. Decided to share the Rice with 1/2 Lobster. Sauce was tasty mixed with the Rice as well Lobster. Not much Lobster though. Service was excellent with our Server patiently answering all of our questions. They've been around for almost 100 years. The prawn ~ it was steamed but it smelled that it came from trash can. It was smelliest shrimps ever. Alhambra definitely did not disappoint for out early evening snacking. All of our dishes (tortilla, meatballs, and beef tripe) were great. Even folks at the table who normally do not like callos/beef tripe really enjoyed it...especially the sauce/stew. We wanted to order a couple more items, but our waitress informed us that the portion sizes were very large. Boy, was she right. In terms of bang for your buck (I mean bang for your Euro), this place is great. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor options, and I highly recommend eating outdoors if the weather is nice. Since the place is somewhat popular, I would recommend making reservations if they accept them. We lucked out with outdoor seating because a table was finishing their meal when we arrived. Ordered the parillada for 2 and was about to order the grilled vegetables but the waiter warned us that the order was very large and with the aide of salad or potatoes it would be too much food. -service: the first waitress split a setup for 6, moving a small table in the middle of the passing route. Thankfully another server told her she should simply seat us in the table for 4 that was available and out of the way. I asked for tap water and it was not brought. Another waitress then asked what we wanted to drink and I told her I had asked for tap water but it wasn't brought- she returned with one cup of water despite us having a party of 2. -parillada for 2: for $33 it was a very good amount of meat. One large sausage, 4 small paprika sausages and 2 large pieces each of chicken and 2 cuts of beef (total 6 large pieces of meat). The chicken was simply flavored but had a nice grill taste. The meat was very chewy and I had a difficult time chewing it. I also asked for it to be well dine when we ordered because I am prego but for one of the cuts of beef, it was pink/bloody in the center and even after asking them to cook it more it still came back pink. read more

A great place to eat that is close to Sol, and not too touristy. Many of the restaurants in the area promise authentic food only for it to be middle of the pack at best and overpriced since they know tourists are around. A great tapas place in the heart of Madrid! I've been traveling around Spain for over a week now and have had many different meals from different restaurants, but this place is still on the very top of my favorites list. The staff is very quick and friendly, and that added to why I like this place, being the first restaurant that I ate at when I landed. My party of 3 ordered the goat cheese with jam, ham croquette, paella, prawns, and a jug of sangria. It was more than enough for us! My favorites were the ham croquette, prawns, and sangria. The croquettes came with shoestring fries that very delicious. The ham croquette wasn't over fried; the crispiness of the bread crumbing was just right! In addition, the fries were amazing even though they were just fries! The prawns came out boiling still in a ceramic plate. It was filled with an olive oil/butter sauce that was soo good. The sangria was the best I had in Spain so far! Not too sweet and a good amount of alcohol mixed in. However, I didn't really like goat cheese and paella. The cheese was huge! I like my cheeses in moderation, but these blocks were too big and therefore, too cheesy. The jam included slightly offsets the cheesiness but not enough for me. The paella rice texture seemed a bit undercooked, so I didn't fully enjoy that dish. Overall, a place worth visiting if you're in Madrid! Had seafood paella here. It seemed like pre-cooked as it got served just in 5 minutes... It was an OK paella that had standard taste, but lacked of the flavour of saffron and rosemary. It might be a good place for tapas but not for authentic paella. In fact, most restaurants in this area may serve pre-cooked paella as they don't have time. So I was satisfied anyway. So she already lost points with us while the table behind us filled with loud men were getting what seemed like unlimited alcohol refills. This place sounded like a tourist trap but there were tons of locals! We decided to come because they had some awesome pictures of oxtail. We ordered it along with prawns. The oxtail was delicious! Definitely worth getting. The shrimps were cooked whole so they were not all purged. They were tasty but not clean- so this is a personal preference for me, and I wouldn't eat it again. Stop. First thing you need to do is make sure you are in the right restaurant. Do Not go into #7 Barrilla Alhambra. That is not the correct restaurant. Go into number 9. Barrilla Alhambra is a cheap copy cat, with weak food and poor service. Maybe they are owned by the same company. Maybe Barrilla Alhambra is for overflow customers. We should have known better and all felt stupid for making that mistake. If you want a drink in a diver place, Barrilla is fine. But if you want a highly rated meal, or you expect a well cooked meal, avoid #7 and make sure you choose #9. If the owners are purposely trying to deceive ignorant tourists (like us), you should avoid both and go to one of the hundreds tapas restaurants within a square mile from Alhambra. Just don't fall into the trap or make the same mistake we made. read more

I came here for lunch because I was destined to find a non touristy and authentic spot, despite all the fakes amongst Puerto el Sol. I was NOT disappointed!! For 13 euros, I received el menu del dia, which is two servings of food, bread, and your choice of a dessert or coffee. My first serving was a fresh salmon and tomato salad. Very tasty and light. My next serving was the hamburger recommended by the server. I thought, damn I'm fake, here I am in Spain getting a burger. But this burger was HUGE!!! And it had a fried egg in it and I think a pork patty. I was floored. It tasted soooo good. I think I died as I ate it. RIP I finished off my meal with a coffee con leche instead of a dessert to be able to continue hiking around Madrid. This place is authentic, friendly, and fills up fast during lunch. A decent, but not great Spanish meal. Stopped in here for dinner before our Flamenco show. The tinto de Verano was refreshing, but not as bubbly as I would have expected or as others I've tasted. A tapa plate of jamon and crackers was served complimentary to the table which everyone enjoyed...the ham in Spain is just fantastic! For a main dish I tried their oxtail. It was fairly fatty and not as tender as I'd hoped. The gravy flavor was rich, but lacked depth. 5 stars for the house salad and the grilled prawns. Forget about the other dishes and get these two! What is so special about the salad? A salad is a salad, right? Wrong! At 6 euros, it can feed 3 people easily, and is packed with lettuce, carrots, tuna, asparagus, corn, beets and onions. The dressing on it is light and delicious. Especially at the end of our travels, this wholesome salad was a very welcome refreshing meal. Now, let's talk about those grilled prawns. Have you seen those picture perfect, gigantic red prawns on social media that made you want to go to Spain? These are like that, and just as delicious as you imagine in your mind's eye. It is juicy and salty and plump with a great char that you can even snack on the skin. I will forever remember this dish. Oh, and the beers are the size of your face at 3 euros. We also sampled the oxtail stew and tripe stew (both ok - nothing to rave about. I actually only ate the broth of the tripe stew and ordered the prawns thereafter). The fried goat cheese was fun, but definitely a lot of food for 2 people! read more

Talberna La Alhambra is one of many restaurants located close to Puerta del Sol. It has an artful entrance that's easy to spot, and was packed when we went in for dinner. We ordered the seafood paella and prawns that came in large in portions. The paella was tasty with plenty of shellfish to our pleasant surprise but they were dry from being cooked in rice. Our separate plate of prawns was more succulent and well salted. This tavern also served Callos Madrilenos, the local beef tripe dish. However, the dish was very disappointing as the beef was not tender or well-prepared and the stew was overly fatty. I usually try not to waste food but couldn't eat much of this. Great place for tapas at a reasonable price! It looks like the restaurant spans 3 buildings, so it's quite a large location. It also seems pretty touristy, but don't let that fool you! The food was delicious as well as the drinks. I was craving paella on our last night in Spain, and Alhambra popped up on Yelp. Their portion is REALLY big, so we shared one so we could tapas hop at other restaurants. I saw one couple got 1 paella each, so it was more like a full meal. The seafood is abundant as well. I love that they give you a free small tapa at the start of your meal! We got small pieces of jamon and chorizo, and I saw other tables get baby sausages. One of our last stops in Madrid. Alhambra's beautiful tiled facade beckoned is in - the boys wanted vermouth and JT wanted wine (Kelly as always was the voice of reason and stuck to water). We didn't eat here but we definitely enjoyed our beverages standing at the bar. And, we got a proper free tapa too - some very tasty croquetas. So, I guess we did eat a little? A wonderful place located right in the center. I heard many great things about Alhambra and decided to take my bf here while he was in Madrid. Wow, we were in for a treat! = WHAT WE GOT = + Goat cheese with blueberry Jam: i didn't realize these were fried so that was an Interesting surprise. Highly recommend and I will make sure that if i come here with my friends that we will get this dish! 5/5 + Garlic Prawns; maybe it was just a bad batch but it didn't taste that flavorful to me. I think it needed a bit more salt but since we were given bread as well it was delicious dipping the bread in the garlic sauce .... but unfortunately I do think the sauce needed more garlic. Would I get it again? Yes, cause for the price it was a great deal but i don't think it's anything to write home about. 3/5 + Beef Entrecot: The waiter recommended this fish or the oxtail stew. I felt like it was a big letdown... the meat was grilled to perfection but severely lacking flavor ! I think it needed more spices. I wouldn't recommend unless you're able to ask for some sauce on the side - 2/5. = SERVICE = Wonderful service with attentive employees.
