Located a few blocks from the Prado museum, La Plateria offers some indoor seating and plenty of outdoor seating (with a premium on food for sitting outdoors). Food is very reasonably priced for the area. Our server brought out a menu board written in English, which was very helpful. The food - Grilled Aspargus - grilled tender and gently seasoned Stewed Pork Cheek with Rice - this is comfort food - stewed meat, gravy, and rice - not complicated, but soul warming Patatas Bravas - a reasonable version Feel like the menu got off the rails a bit here - Duck Confit with Apple - used to a more spiced version with a pan seared skin. Duck is ok, the apple is really soft with tough skin. Paella Mixta - a very chicken and bell pepper forward version of a paella Chocolate à la tazo - hot chocolate - a thinner, less chocolatey version than we had at other restaurants. Also, it was a broken emulsion. Green Salad with Sardine and Fresh Cheese - I thought this was a weird mixture of greens, carrots, tomatoes, olives, sardines, and mild/soft cheese. I really enjoyed eating here. One fun fact is they have an up charge if you want to sit outdoors, which is funny because it is winter and sooo cold outside, so we saved money by eating inside. I thought their dishes were all very flavorful and well seasoned. The duck confit was delicious. But the cooked fruit that it came paired with was a little odd. The paella rice flavor was good, but doesn't get served in a skillet like your other Spanish restaurants. There was no wait on a weekday evening at 7:30pm. I feel like I was meant to eat here. This is the area I walked to after my morning tour as part 2 of my tour was happening here. I was looking for a place to eat at, but the spot I found wasn't opening for another 20 mins. I circled this spot 3 times until I decided to just make myself go inside. I'm so glad I did. They ended up having great food options. I had enough time to kill and ended up killing 3 plates of food and 2 glasses of wine. By the time I finished it was time to start my second tour at the muse across the street. The food here was delicious. I loved the spicy sausage, salad and calamari that I ordered. Unlike most folks, I dig the mayo dip that went with the calamari. I kilt that serving. The staff were nice. I finished with just enough time to sober up outside while enjoying the sun before I had to meet with my guide to go inside the museum. This is a cute and tasty spot we stopped off at while walking to the Prado Museum. It is basically located right across the street from the museum. It wasn't too busy at the time but people continuously filtered in and out. The service was quick and the prices for what you ordered were good. My boyfriend and I were waiting to enter the Prado museum when it has free entrance times, and stopped here for a few drinks because it had nice outdoor seating. I was able to have both the sangria and tinto de verano. Probably, the worst sangria I had during my trip to Spain. It tasted super watery, not a fruit in sight, and it has a lot undissolved sugar the bottom like no one bothered to mix it. Tinto de verano was slightly better, but nothing to come back for. The food was pretty good, and the ambience was decent outdoors. However, when we tried to order food without nuts in it, we were met with skepticism and downright disrespect. Mind you, I speak Spanish, so the language being a barrier was not a problem. Our waiter promised us the pesto buratta would be without nuts, and we double-checked several times. However, upon the food arriving, our waiter announced "buratta without nuts" and walked away. The buratta was covered in almond shavings, and the plate was littered with macadamia nuts and walnuts. There was not a piece of the dish left untouched by nuts. We were shocked and disappointed, as my friend is terribly allergic, and buratta is her favorite food. Favorite tapas place in Madrid. Found this place from positive Yelp reviews and ended up coming here with my family 2 out of the 3 days we were in town. Over the two meals, we tried the choricitos (mini fried chorizos), rice with squid, ox tail, pimientos de padron (fried green peppers), fried squid, bacaloa portuguesa (Portuguese cod), mushroom rice, and duck confit. Highly recommend the choricitos, ox tail, peppers, duck confit. Ox tail and duck confit both had great flavor and were incredibly tender. For dessert, we tried tiramisu and cheesecake, both delicious. Don't recommend the cod. The rice with squid, fried squid, and mushroom rice were decent. A portion of their menu is set, while another part (tapas del dia) that they display on a standing chalkboard changes every day. We ordered ~5 racion size tapas each meal and plentiful beer, tinto de verano, coffee, and dessert, and the bill came out to about 50 euros, a great value for the quality and portion size. Sangria (1/5): worst sangria I've had in Spain, watered down and tasted like they added Sprite to it. Stewed Oxtail (3/5): lacked flavor, very average but the portion was good. The mushroom with fried egg (you mix them) was very flavourful and had a excellent variety mushrooms. The dish could have been elevated had it included some more textural elements or a burst of freshness. The second dish that we enjoyed was the fried Hake (it's a cod). Very tender, light batter, served simply with a lemon. The lemon gave an element of tartness and cut through some of the heaviness, but a part of me still wanted some tartar sauce :). Recommended. The other dishes were forgettable: mixed paella was good but otherwise not special. Fried chicken wings (what was I thinking?!) was a train wreck. Not seasoned properly - you can see the sea salt and pepper scattered on the plate with none of it actually sticking to the chicken. DRINKS: 3 stars. Nothing special. SERVICE: 2 stars. Extremely slow service. We were left at a table with no menu, water, cutlery/ acknowledgement of existence for over 10-12 minutes. Had to flag a server after two other tables who were seated after us were served. Asked to order with two servers both who acknowledged us, asked us what we wanted and left mid sentence. The main server was nice, but otherwise, do not expect to have a good service experience. My partner and I was just having the idea to try something Spanish and we were really close by this neighbourhood, So we looked it and found this place. We decided to check the restaurant out. La Platería was actually close to Plaza de Oriente, probably just couple minutes walk. So it wasn't so difficult to find. We actually came from the backside of the restaurant, but it wasn't a problem to find it either. When we were here, it was about noon. They place was already full of people. We had to wait a bit, after these couple days in Spain. I was already used to it. So we waited. After awhile, we found a table inside was free. So we just took that one. It would be nicer to sit outside in such beautiful weather, But it wasn't a bad either sitting inside to see this place. The restaurant has been here for years now. It was quite interesting. The food was amazing here! We ordered a fried squid and Paella. And of course some local beers. It was a great complanation. They also allowed that we share our food. I saw some restaurant they forbid it, regular it won't be probably, But it would be quite difficult for the curious souls. I love the Paella, it wasn't super fancy or what, But it tasted really fine. The fried squid tasted brilliant as well. The staff were really friendly here, we really enjoyed our time in the restaurant. They also speak English as well. Food was okay. I sat at the counter and ordered a beer. After a bit I tried to get the bartenders attention to order some tapas. He seemed offended, gave me a mean look, and said he had to attend to another "command". Okay cool. This is a great place with friendly service, especially if you don't know any Spanish. Pros: - Location is great. Right next to the Prado National Museum. Very easy walk from the Atocha train station. - Large patio area that is also covered in case of sunny days. Great view of the park and people watching. - Most, if not all, the staff spoke English - English menus and signs - Food is solid. May not be the best in town, but there's no downside to it. Cons: - Not much of a beer selection from what I remember. The waiter said they only have one type of beer on draft. - Paella is only tapas style. A must if you are in the museum area. Every time I visit Madrid I stop here for one dish. So far I have been here three times in two years and the dish does not disappoint. *this review is based solely on the service we received, not on the food. We stopped at La Plateria after visiting the Prado and were thoroughly disappointed. We spent an hour here and didn't even get looked at after the initial glass of wine. We were waited on shortly after arriving and then waited 45 minutes before finally calling it quits and asking for the bill. After asking we were met by flat out ignorance and disgruntled rudeness. After paying the bill the bar tender short-changed us and the original waitress, whom we hadn't heard from for 45 minutes, decided to stop by to roll her eyes and mutter rude words in Spanish under her breath. We understand that there is a more relaxed atmosphere and feel to dining in Spain, but when all the locals around us were being waited on attentively, it was a bit too much. For our third night in Madrid this was an absolutely terrible experience and we would never recommend La Plateria to any American or other tourist.
