We did A LOT of walking on this vacation exploring various cities and small towns, taking walking tours, and just generally meandering around seeing all the little shops and investigating potential places to eat. The problem with searching for places to eat in an unfamiliar town, esp a high tourist traffic town, is it's hard to tell which places are worth hitting up. Cervantes was one of those places. We pretty much scouted 3 or 4 places to have lunch and this one seemed like it had the most locals eating in it, the place was packed and full of smiling faces from satisfied customers. Luckily we were seated quickly and something that I appreciated was the menus have english descriptions for us limited spanish speaking people (some places we ate at did not.) We ordered emanadas, ham croquettes, garlic shrimp, and some sheep's cheese in olive oil. Sounds like a nice small lunch but I can assure the portions were sizeable and super filling. We couldn't finish all of it even though everything was delicious. I think my favorite were the ham croquettes as well as the empanadas. One thing about the empanadas is I was thinking they'd be like the latin american-filled pastry-hand pie type, but they were actually pie-pie type...like a slice of double crusted pie filled with savory tuna goodness. We each ordered one but could've just gotten one to share since they were pretty huge. Overall this place was great. Friendly service, good food, and a welcoming atmosphere. Tonight it was terrible so my advise is If you don't speak Spanish do not eat here We ordered potato salad with red pepper and tuna. There was no tuna on the plate. Slightly out of the way if you're in the touristy areas. However, it's an excellent and straightforward cervecería with good food. The bartenders and crew are very friendly, they'll take care of you. Mahou Clasica and Maestra were the go to options. Cheese, chorizo and other tapas were outstanding too. I visited multiple times throughout a stay in Madrid. This restaurant was part of a tapas food tour. We enjoyed the experience and stopped by the next day for lunch. I selected Pulpo - we have enjoyed this dish all over Spain, and while this was a bit expensive, it was delicious. My husband ordered Tripe and a side of garlicky potatoes. Again, both were very good. Service was good. I would have rated it great if we had received our beverages more quickly. After trekking around the city we were pretty darn thirsty! The menu does offer an English translation and our server knew a little English so the ordering process was a breeze. With two beers and two house wines, our bill was about 55 euros. Be sure to ask for the house wine or you might get something more expensive. Again, our meal was more expensive than we have normally paid but it is certainly a locals hangout. read more

Very delicious restaurant steps away from our hotel. The decor is beautiful and reminds me of a costal restaurant. Our guide stated the bright colors represented the south of Spain. This was the last stop on our food tour with our local guide. This restaurant is known for their seafood, so we followed the recommendation and ordered seafood. We sat down in the back room and there was ample seating. My favorite thing was the garlic shrimp that was sizzling when it came to the table. It was so flavor filled. We had these peppers that reminded me of shishito peppers but some were spicy and some sweet. Then we had the octopus with a seasoning I think was similar to paprika. This place is totally wonderful. The best dishes are the seafood ones, and the wines are pretty decent also. Oscar is their server, who is friendly and efficient. He doesn't speak much English, but if you try to practice your Spanish on him, he bends over backwards to accommodate you. The calamari dish is delicious: some of the best we've had. The shrimp fritters and salpacon de mariscos are also very good. The vino Blanco is pretty decent, without being too sweet or dry, but they also serve some decent rioja. My 1st tapas experience in Spain & it was quite delightful! Just a short walk from our hotel; the line at the Prado was v long, so we decided to have some tapas 1st - glad we did. A look in the window, the fried pork belly caught our eyes! Perusing the menu, we found the dish (thank goodness the menu is in 3 languages-we actually found the dish by it's French name 1st: Lardons/Bacon rashers/torreznos de soria). We added a pincho/pinxto of tortilla española. For drinks a bottle of Coke & water. With the drinks came 2 large servings of Manchego cheese with the most delish 'crackers' (gratis with any drinks ordered as we didn't order it nor did it show up on the bill). The tortilla arrived next and it was so yummy, even though it was probably made earlier in the day; who knew eggs, potatoes & salt (& lots of olive oil, I'm sure) could be so tasty. Finally, the torreznos arrived - along with a mound of 'chips/fries', garnished with a dozen or so padron peppers. My goodness, what a generous portion of food & all tasty! We had a good laugh that we were basically having breakfast (bacon, eggs, & potatoes) tapas. Locals & non-locals filled the place. Service was efficient, with 1 pretty friendly server. Great spot for an assortment of seafood tapas. Came in and got the gambas al ajillos ( shrimps with garlic) percebes (gooseneck barnacles) pulpo a la Gallega (Galician octopus). Everything was delicious! The smokey sliced octopus was fragrant and tender. It's served over a bed of potatoes sprinkled with olive oil and paprika. The goose barnacles looked like monster claws. They were extremely soft and tender with texture like cooked down beef tendons except has the tasted of the ocean. It's definitely an acquired taste. While on vacation, we checked this place out after the Prado Museum. Yes, the place has a great draft beer list, good wine list, and can do any sort of well drink but that's where my positives end. We split patatas alioli (5 euro), gambas al ajillo (15 euro), and ensalada for two (14 euro). The potatoes were decent though not what I was expecting as it's potatoes in a mayo like sauce. The shrimp were over grilled, over sauced, and a small portion for that price. The ensalada was big enough but just overall bland. Food came out very slowly and they didn't dare off a bread refill. My issue w/this place was that they seemed to charge you and give you whatever they felt like. They gave us bottled water even we specifically asked for tap water in Spanish. Then when we asked for another glass of water, we were again given bottled water. Then comes the bill, the first 2 bottled waters were 1.50 euro, the third was 2.60 euro. When we questioned the waiter, he then changed the price of the third bottled water. All in all - they seemed determined to RIP OFF TOURISTS at this place.
