Nice tapas spot amongst many other spots. Service was very inattentive, not a huge deal for us but we had to flag down the waiter for rounds of drinks and to pay. Croquettes and the patatas with 2 sauces were great, calamari was very rubbery and chewy though and we only ate two pieces. Giving 4 stars because the plates were HUGE and could def feed a lot of people for cheap, so if you're not in a rush it's a good place to stop and grab some food for cheap (just avoid the calamari).

    OMG, the portions are ridiculous.

Good restaurant with lots of small plates you can sample. I had some sliced cured meat as well as some other good stuff. They have the type of tapas where it's a small slice of break and then slices of cured meat, smoked salmon, or other stuff on it. Overall, a good experience. It was very crowded though, on a weekend night. Service was fairly efficient and tolerated my lack of Spanish reasonably well. Bathrooms: Decent.

La Descubierta was a lifesaver for this hungry tourist in Madrid. I was walking around downtown Madrid, when I got the sudden urge for Spanish food and Sangria. Luckily, I had service and fired up my trusty Yelp app to find this restaurant. Nestled in a quiet side-street near La Puerta de Sol, it's the perfect spot to take a break from touring, sit down, have something to eat and enjoy a drink. I originally sat inside, but it was pretty empty and it was a nice day out, so they let me change my table to one of the outdoor seats. It was a really cute view of all of the old Spanish architecture and all of the hustle and bustle of the surrounding restaurants. The menu was completely in Spanish, so I wasn't sure what *everything* said, so I asked the server for her recommendations. I got 2 tostas (with meat and sauces for 5.50 each), which are not tapas - they're much larger and 1 is really suitable for 1 person. They were incredible and I finished them both, don't judge me. They also gave me 2 tapas on the house after I initially ordered, which was really cool. I also ordered 2 vasos of sangria (just a cup) for 2.80 each. As if I hadn't gorged myself enough, I then ordered tarte de chocolate (chocolate cake), which was U N R E A L. I think my server was terrified by me by the end of my meal, because of how much and quickly I ate. #NoRagrets All in all, all of this food was like 19 euros, which was a steal in my eyes, especially if you're on vacation and don't have a problem splurging. I would still say this restaurant is affordable though, so definitely check it out if you're in Madrid.

La Descubierta was one of my favorite tapas places I ate at on my trip to Spain. The food was delicious, the servers were helpful, and the environment was very fun! We ordered a variety of tapas to share and enjoy with the table. They offer all of your classic tapas, plus some unique and interesting options. With a round of drinks they bring out a complimentary tapa as well! My favorite thing we ordered was the tosta with solomillo iberico, quest brie, and pimientos. The flavor was out of this world! I wanted it all to myself. Highly recommend! We also had the patatas con dos salsas (Bravas and aioli), the calamari, mussels (Galician), pork, and Descubierta Salad. The calamari was lightly fried and very fresh. I think probably my favorite fried calamari I had! We ordered the mussels Galician style. The broth was slightly spicy, and very delicious! My dad was obsessed, and soaked it all up with bread when we were done. Both the sauces on the patatas were very flavorful and the potatoes were nice and crispy outside, but soft on the inside. The Descubierta salad came with avocado and a ceviche like mix of fish. Very yummy! The pork was cooked perfectly and came covered with a delicious sauce. It also came with fries. Overall amazing tapas in Madrid! Definitely get over there, and if there is a wait...wait.

Sangria and a croqueta. Love the napkin!

We spent an afternoon/evening in Madrid, and this little spot was great. Their sangria is tasty and their portions are very generous. The patatas bravas are delicious!!! The service was the best I've had in quite some time. Our waitress was so sweet, patient, and happy. I realized what a difference it makes when the person taking care of you has a great attitude. It's a different experience. Definitely recommend!!

My sister and I came here and were not disappointed. Their plates of affordable tapas were huge! We were so excited by this find. The service was fast and friendly. Their patatas bravas, chorizo, and croquetas made for an amazing and fast late dinner.

Very good restaurant for tapas!! We waited a little bit before having a seat. But The place was full Of people and there was a very good ambiance. It was noisy (as all spahish restaurants), so in order to Speak With your friends, do not hesitate to speak loud too! We ordered chorizo tapas, patatas bravas con 2 salsas, pimientos de padron (Amazing) y croquetas de jamon !! Without forgetting glasses Of sangría!! All these for 2 people for 30 euros ! (We ordered too much, we had difficulties to finish the plates)

    Christina R.

Best tapas we had in Spain. You cannot beat the service and friendliness of the staff, they were very helpful in getting us seated and recommendations. The guy with frosted tips went hard. Get the 1.5 L sangria and enjoy!

How is this even tapas? ham with cheese, tomatoes and bread.

The food is good. Not great. It had good coquetas, but the bread was very stale. It was mostly other Americans eating there.

The restaurant is located in the heart of Madrid on a very cute street, and it is easy to find and walk there if you stay in the city center. The place is not very big - both times I went there for lunch, there were no tables available, so I had to sit at the bar; once I even had to wait about 7 minutes until one bar spot became free. The restaurant's design is simple, but pretty and lovely. Overall, the restaurant is in very good condition and was perfectly clean both times I visited. The only small downside is that the place is quite noisy, but it did not bother me. One of the best things about this place is the people who work there - both a guy and a lady at the bar were extremely nice and friendly to me; plus, both spoke very good English. They gave me recommendations on what to try, and I followed their advice. The restaurant's menu is not big, but it has all the most popular traditional Spanish dishes. Both times I ordered Rabo de Toro (a traditional Spanish stew), Fardos (squid rolls with bacon and squid ink mousse); and once I also tried croquetas de jamón (ham croquettes). The croquettes were tasty - I loved their flavor and soft texture. One portion includes 6 pieces, and they are quite big and filling. It was my first time trying Fardos (I ordered a 1/3 portion), and it was a great experience - the dish turned very delicious after the bartender mixed it for me. The squid was cooked very nicely, and combined with the fresh bacon and ink mousse, it tasted fantastic. Rabo de Toro (I ordered a 1/2 portion) was also my first time trying this dish, and I loved it - the stew was perfectly cooked, very soft and moist, with rich flavors, and it melted in my mouth. The restaurant also offers a wide variety of drinks, especially wines. I do not drink alcohol, so I was recommended to try grape juice - Mosto, which was extremely flavorful and tasted like fresh pressed grape juice, even though it came from a glass bottle. I loved that drink! Price-wise, all items on the menu seemed reasonable. I paid €8 for 6 ham croquettes, €12 for a half portion of Rabo de Toro, €8 for a 1/3 portion of Fardos, and €3 for one glass of grape juice. It is possible to have a nice full lunch here for around €22, which is reasonable for a restaurant in the heart of Madrid. The place accepts all major credit cards and Apple Pay, which is a big plus. If you visit this restaurant, I strongly recommend trying 1/3 or 2/3 portion of Fardos, a half portion of Rabo de Toro, and their grape juice Mosto - it's enough food to feel full and experience traditional Spanish flavors.

I ordered the Oxtail (Rabo de Toro) and wooooow... easily one of the most tender and delicate pieces of meat I've EVER had. They serve it boneless, but I'm pretty sure if they would have provided a bone, it would've fallen right off. The whole place gives cozy tavern vibes with a rustic interior that feels perfectly Madrid. NOTE: the portions are a bit heavier than most spots. I hate to waste food, especially when it's as immaculate as the Oxtail, but if you're a party of one, you got to do what you go to do.

The quality of the food has remained consistent for the 10 years I've been visiting! Tucked away just off Sol, Malaespina is the epitome of a classic Madrid taverna. The inviting, unpretentious atmosphere, the cozy charm, the prices, the energy -- it's hard to capture it all in words. There's a certain magic at Malaespina. The tavern has been around for hundreds of years, and I often wonder what it was like a century ago. I'm always amazed that such a gem exists in the heart of Madrid, a city center filled with tourist traps. Malaespina draws both locals and tourists -- and for good reason. The food quality to price ratio is unbeatable. On our most recent visit, we had huevos estrellados, tortilla tapas, sangria, and espressos, and spent about $20 for the two of us. You really can't beat that! Here's hoping they stick around for many more years to come.

When we first sat down they gave us a welcome bruschetta and bread for free which were pretty decent portions. We then ordered our food and it was pretty good as well. We ordered their half chicken (pollo asado con patatas), sirloin steak, and Malaspina tosta. The portions were huge and we definitely over ordered. We thought they were more the size of tapas but each dish was a huge portion itself which definitely isn't a bad thing. The food tasted pretty good but I think it just lacked flavor occasionally. All the meat was cooked well and was very juicy, just could use a little more flavor. Otherwise everything was good. Solid 4 stars

We were seated by the table near the window and ordered right away since we knew what we wanted. My friend and I split the mixed paella which comes with shrimp, calamari, crawfish, chicken and sausage. We also ordered two big glasses of the sangria. The paella took about 45 mins to make since all the paellas are made to order. While we were waiting we were sipping on our sangrias which were delicious! The only thing was that it was a bit too sweet for me and I could taste the grains of sugar at the bottom of my glass. The paella finally came and it was a beautiful site to see ! So colorful with the different elements in the dish. The rice was cooked perfectly and everything was seasoned well. It was a bit oily though when you scrape the bottom of the pan to get all the rice but it was delicious!!! During out meal the owner and our waiter has a disagreement about something and were yelling at each other across the restaurant.
