    Orange wine and cheesecake

We stumbled upon this gem on our first night in Madrid. It was a Monday and we arrived right when they opened at 20:15. The place filled up and came alive immediately. The house vermouth was well recommended. All of the tapas was great- specifically the house special meatballs, the mussels, and the beef cheeks. The service was quick and friendly. Cheesecake for dessert was very good and we got little glasses of orange wine complimentary at the end. All in all, a wonderful experience. Just bear in mind that this place is small and popular and you'll probably be packed like sardines.

This is a cozy spot with cute decor. Portions were bigger than expected. Service was polite but not warm. The food was fine but not noteworthy. Overall a pleasant experience but with all the excellent food in the area, I wasn't eager to return.

    Meat empanada appetizer. Very good.

Date of Visit: (11/2/2019) La Perejila is a small tapas restaurant located on Cava Baja. We arrived on a Saturday a little after 1. We didn't have to wait for a table when we arrived but over the course of our visit more and more people crowded the restaurant and bar area. It's clearly a popular spot. The tables are small and close together. At one point we had people standing over and around us but we had finished our meal by that point so it wasn't bothersome. It's definitely something to keep in mind though if you're looking for a place that's quieter/more intimate. Service was slow but I think the server was tending the bar and waiting tables. It took a while for our food to come out and it took a while for us to get our check (30+ minutes) but overall I enjoyed the food. We each got a meat empanada as an appetizer which was really good. For my main course I got the sliced toast tapa with smoked cod, Spanish paprika, and fresh tomatoes. It was generously sized, the cod was fresh, and the bread was nicely toasted. If you're in the area and looking for a place to eat, I'd give them a try but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.

La Perejila is a traditional Spanish restaurant in Madrid's La Latina neighborhood. They serve classic dishes common in Spanish households. The items we ordered were chorizo bites in white wine, callos (tripe and sausage), and calamares en su tinta (squid in its ink). Each plate was very filling, we ordered three items for three people and it was too much food! Great option if you're looking for something traditional and filling, especially good during winter.

Fun restaurant with a unique interior. Centrally located on Cava Baja. Friendly staff. The menu is not very large but the items are not small and two pick will be enough. You will enjoy the food and the time you spend here.

The bartender was so friendly and spoke to us in English! She humored when I attempted with broken Spanish. We loved the empanadas and especially how the bar filled with Spanish speakers. Definitely will be back!

La Perejila is a unique restaurant. The decorations are over-the-top and kitchy, but in a sort of comfortable homey way. It's like grandma's house. The space is a little tight, but there's plenty of seating. The food is very good. The house specialty meatballs are excellent and come in a unique sauce that is great soaked up by bread. Speaking of bread, the tapa dish with anchovies over toast is also very good. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list and good vermouth (Spanish style of course). The food is a bit pricey for the serving size but I am still giving 5 stars because I believe the quality is up to par with charging a little extra. This still isn't an expensive place to eat and I'd highly recommend it!

This could possibly be one of my favorite tapas places in Madrid. The food is awesome, good wine selection, and sitting in the bar watching the concoctions emerge from the kitchen. The atmosphere of the restaurant only gets better the more you drink. Ask for the english menu. Makes english speaking peoples' lives easier.

The ham was so delicious here. But the killer possibly the best thing I ate all day was the black pudding on toast. Amazing.

I truly have to highlight Pepe, Franco, and Grace for taking the time to speak to us and get to know us. The food was FANTASTIC. Everything was fantastic, but the Sangria was spectacular, (probably one of the best sangrias I've ever had). At the end of our meal, Pepe brought us two liquor de Limon shots, which made our whole night!! Definitely recommend this place in the La Latina neighborhood. You won't regret it!

It is a great place to stop in for a drink and a quick bite, especially if you want something authentic and lively. When we visited, it was packed to the point where you were shoulder to shoulder with other guests and close enough to easily hear the party next to you. It adds to the charm if you enjoy that classic crowded European dining atmosphere, but it is something to keep in mind if you prefer more space.

The restaurant is located in the heart of Madrid on a very cute street, and it is easy to find and walk there if you stay in the city center. The place is not very big - both times I went there for lunch, there were no tables available, so I had to sit at the bar; once I even had to wait about 7 minutes until one bar spot became free. The restaurant's design is simple, but pretty and lovely. Overall, the restaurant is in very good condition and was perfectly clean both times I visited. The only small downside is that the place is quite noisy, but it did not bother me. One of the best things about this place is the people who work there - both a guy and a lady at the bar were extremely nice and friendly to me; plus, both spoke very good English. They gave me recommendations on what to try, and I followed their advice. The restaurant's menu is not big, but it has all the most popular traditional Spanish dishes. Both times I ordered Rabo de Toro (a traditional Spanish stew), Fardos (squid rolls with bacon and squid ink mousse); and once I also tried croquetas de jamón (ham croquettes). The croquettes were tasty - I loved their flavor and soft texture. One portion includes 6 pieces, and they are quite big and filling. It was my first time trying Fardos (I ordered a 1/3 portion), and it was a great experience - the dish turned very delicious after the bartender mixed it for me. The squid was cooked very nicely, and combined with the fresh bacon and ink mousse, it tasted fantastic. Rabo de Toro (I ordered a 1/2 portion) was also my first time trying this dish, and I loved it - the stew was perfectly cooked, very soft and moist, with rich flavors, and it melted in my mouth. The restaurant also offers a wide variety of drinks, especially wines. I do not drink alcohol, so I was recommended to try grape juice - Mosto, which was extremely flavorful and tasted like fresh pressed grape juice, even though it came from a glass bottle. I loved that drink! Price-wise, all items on the menu seemed reasonable. I paid €8 for 6 ham croquettes, €12 for a half portion of Rabo de Toro, €8 for a 1/3 portion of Fardos, and €3 for one glass of grape juice. It is possible to have a nice full lunch here for around €22, which is reasonable for a restaurant in the heart of Madrid. The place accepts all major credit cards and Apple Pay, which is a big plus. If you visit this restaurant, I strongly recommend trying 1/3 or 2/3 portion of Fardos, a half portion of Rabo de Toro, and their grape juice Mosto - it's enough food to feel full and experience traditional Spanish flavors.

I ordered the Oxtail (Rabo de Toro) and wooooow... easily one of the most tender and delicate pieces of meat I've EVER had. They serve it boneless, but I'm pretty sure if they would have provided a bone, it would've fallen right off. The whole place gives cozy tavern vibes with a rustic interior that feels perfectly Madrid. NOTE: the portions are a bit heavier than most spots. I hate to waste food, especially when it's as immaculate as the Oxtail, but if you're a party of one, you got to do what you go to do.

The quality of the food has remained consistent for the 10 years I've been visiting! Tucked away just off Sol, Malaespina is the epitome of a classic Madrid taverna. The inviting, unpretentious atmosphere, the cozy charm, the prices, the energy -- it's hard to capture it all in words. There's a certain magic at Malaespina. The tavern has been around for hundreds of years, and I often wonder what it was like a century ago. I'm always amazed that such a gem exists in the heart of Madrid, a city center filled with tourist traps. Malaespina draws both locals and tourists -- and for good reason. The food quality to price ratio is unbeatable. On our most recent visit, we had huevos estrellados, tortilla tapas, sangria, and espressos, and spent about $20 for the two of us. We thought they were more the size of tapas but each dish was a huge portion itself which definitely isn't a bad thing. The food tasted pretty good but I think it just lacked flavor occasionally.
