If you know me and if you know my dining habits, then you're likely very surprised that I find…read moremyself a fan of Yats. I don't have a particularly adventurous palate. My body's digestive system isn't the greatest. I tend to go for familiar staples rather than risk-taking cuisine. I have weird texture issues and don't really love my flavors all smooshed together. So, why do I love Yats and why did I insist on finally visiting this Avon location as I wind down my time working on my father's Putnam County estate (one county west)? It starts with the service. It's not what I'd call gregarious. It's calm yet friendly, hospitable yet not smothering. As someone who is introverted yet social, I feel comfortable here. It then goes to the atmosphere. Every Yats I've been to has a stylish, warm vibe that combines culture with art and just the right amount of humanity. Then, there are the prices. There are only a couple price points for Yats (unless you do add-ons like beer). Pricing is simple, consistent, and you know you can get a good meal for a fair price. I guess I should also mention the food. I don't know. I hate smooshed foods. I hate odd textures. I love Yats. I was introduced to Yats with the Italiano, a concoction I don't see often on their chalkboard-written rotating menu that always lets people know which dishes are began, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc. My other "go to" option is the drunken chicken. Both have unique textures and smooshed flavors - yet, I love them. Every location I've been to is pretty darn accessible. Employees will assist if needed, though they won't assume (which I appreciate). This location is accessible, beautifully decorated, and as soon as you enter you can't help but feel like you've entered a cajun world smack dab in the middle of Avon. Yats, a mini-chain now in Indiana and Ohio, was started here (right on College Avenue). You used to see the owner pretty regularly - a little less common now with 14 locations, however, the New Orleans vibe is present at every location. Good food. Fairly priced. Pleasant atmosphere. Yep. I love Yats.

It's a real compact lineup consisting of a few items. I bought the drunken chicken and a toffee cookie. I wish to return for another experience. I think this is a local franchise

It's familiar, family friendly and the broccoli cheddar casserole is like comfort food to me. The last time I was there I had an upset stomach after lunch but you never know for sure what the cause is unless you haven't eaten at all before hand. So we decided to give them another chance. Those honey butter croissants are quite enticing after all. Unfortunately, the Bourbon Glazed Salmon I usually order was undercooked and I couldn't eat it. I hate wasting food but I had to send it back. The service seems to get worse each time I've been there over the years. Not sure what is going on with the management but it seems to be lacking the leadership and skills required to run a successful restaurant. It makes me sad that I can't go back there anymore. I just won't risk getting sick and need more consistent service.

I was fortunate enough to make a last minute reservation on open table (yay!) and we had an excellent table on the patio overlooking the water! It had been a couple of years since my last visit, and was sad to see some of my usual favorites no longer on the menu (I'm looking at you chicken cordon bleu fingers!!!). The vibes were incredible! Unfortunately our cocktails and food were average and honestly lacked a lot of flavor, but I will keep returning for the patio! I will say, parking can also be a nightmare depending on the time of day. They do have a rather big lot, so you may just be driving around for a while. If you happen to park further out, I appreciate they have a golf cart shuttle to the main entrance!

The service was great, and our server did everything he could to make our experience enjoyable. Unfortunately, I was heartbroken to learn that a new chef has taken over, completely revamped the menu, and STOPPED SERVING THE BEST APPETIZER IN ALL OF INDIANA: the Chicken Cordon Bleu Fingers. I genuinely have no idea why they would make this decision. These have been on the menu for well over a decade, have a cult following, and are one of the main reasons many people visit Rick's in the first place. Thankfully, our server went above and beyond and found a way to make it happen since they still prepare them for banquets and special events. That alone should tell you how beloved they are. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal didn't fare as well. The risotto was a major disappointment. It was bland, overcooked, and lacked the rich flavor it used to have. The gumbo was also underwhelming, tasting overly tomato-heavy and missing the depth and seasoning you'd expect. Overall, the food quality has noticeably declined. Between the menu changes and the disappointing execution, it's no longer worth the drive or the price point for me. It's disappointing to see a restaurant I once loved move in this direction.

We ordered the fried green tomatoes, and they were delicious! We also had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and jalapeño mac and cheese--everything was incredibly tasty. For dessert, we tried the honey lavender cake with blackberry, and oh my--it was absolutely delicious. Prices were very reasonable overall. I 100% recommend this place!

ONLY IN INDIANA. I've heard about Hoosier Roots since they opened. It's about an hour from my house (thank all things holy!) and it's TOTALLY WORTH THE TRIP. (8 minutes outside Brownsburg) We kept it simple- 1 order of chicken (8 pieces, yep, 1 whole chicken) 1 small jalapeño mac & cheese, and because they had house made fried pickles, what the hell- add those, too. Walked out with 2 containers of left overs, all for the grand total of $37. Hoosier Roots ain't bougie. This is a jeans & t-shirt place. But, dang- the chicken is better than my grandma's out of the cast iron skillet. I would absolutely take my fancy friends from out of state to get a REAL taste of Indiana. Trust me- they'll be talking about it for ages. We better be careful, it might become the next ironically hip place that the likes of me can't get in to.
