Although as loyal I am as a Logan Square resident, my childhood centered around my first home: Portage Park, home of the now defunct Patio Theater and new Club Euro...wtf!? Stay classy, Portage Park.
We went to Las Tablas in Portage Park on Saturday with family for lunch to celebrate my brother's graduation. Parking wasn't too bad - we opted for street parking instead of the big parking pay lot on Laporte Ave.
We had reservations for 9 and were seated promptly. The space wasn't too big which made me wonder how they pulled off live dancing Friday and Saturday nights. Décor was inviting - walls were painted mustard yellow, art of dancing fat people lined the walls, and plentiful wooden tables and chairs filled the dining room.
My brother had been there a couple of times and was armed with a handful of recommendations. We started off with a pitcher of Refajo which was basically a combination of light beer and Kola Champagne soda. It was like a Colombian version of a Blue Moon with an orange slice but less citrusy and much sweeter. It was very good and refreshing. 5 stars.
For appetizers, we went with the Empenada Combination Plate (Chicken, Beef and Cheese Empenadas and a side salad) and Aborrajado (Sweet Plantains with Guava Paste and Melted Cheese on top). The empenadas were good, even better with the Chimichurri sauce they put on your table. They were a bit greasy but the side salad with light dressing did well to hide that. The plantains were also done well - something to commend when trying to blend both sweet and salty ingredients (for perfect execution, try the Ropa Vieja at Carnivale). I give both items 4 stars.
For the main course, we went with the Piscada Colombiana - Entraña skirt steak (house specialty), rib-eye steak, pork loin, and chicken breast, homemade chorizo, pork ribs, arepa, crunchy green plantain, fried sweet plantain, yuca and potato. Phew! My brother warned it'd be huge so when the waiter set the tablet down on our table it felt like a farmer filling in a trough for his pigs. It is massive!!! They say it's for two people. Honestly, I think it'd be more adequate for 3 people without appetizers. Everything was delcious! The Entrana was as advertised. Chicken was delicious and still moist - a feat given how skinny the cut is. Even the potatoes were amazing. They were the size of cherry tomatoes and were cooked so the skin was crunchy while the inside remained soft. This was a definite 5 star.
For dessert, we opted for the Flan de Coco which again was very very good. Filipinos have our own version of Flan and as my mom sat to the side and refused to have some (what a hater!), I enjoyed every bite even more. 5 stars.
A note about service: It may have been because it was lunch on a Saturday, but we had no problems with service.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience. Everything I ate I enjoyed (maybe largely in part due to my brother's recommendations), service didn't disappoint and family is always good company. 4 stars overall only because I'm not as versed in Colombian cuisine as I'd like to be. read more
