Ken worked patiently with us on refining the layout and designs. He always paid early and close attention to important and critical details. Landscape Dynamics and Ken Wexner is one of the best kept secrets of the trivalley. He gets business almost entirely on word of mouth and through neighbors and friends. We found him through my in-laws referral and he has subsequently gone through almost their entire street with neighbors seeing how nice their yard is (he did the landscaping a year ago). We needed a fix on our drainage as we were getting pooling water in the front and back yards during the rainy season, we ended up needing to grade the entire thing, rerouting drains from the back, and that meant tearing up our pathway, putting in pavers, and then changing shape and size of lawn, putting in new plants, landscape lighting and new irrigation. We started working with Ken in the spring on ideas and design after we obtained quotes from several other companies. Ken's was by far the best, and the most comprehensive in details and the best priced. I encourage anyone to work with Ken, be forewarned that he is very popular so tends to be booked quite far in advance, but I have I'll say he is true to his word, unlike other companies, if he says 8 weeks to start the job, he means 8 weeks. I'd rather have expectations set appropriately then have someone changing or playing at delay tactics any day. Ken oversees everything and was at our house daily while the work was being done but his crew is great and really work hard the entirety of the job, they are wonderful to have around, very trustworthy and kind. They made sure the front was accessible and safe for my toddler while we had concrete torn up in the front and were very careful with our house and plants/trees that were retained. They were courteous to our small court of neighbors and the garbage men, by moving the cans during pickup day to ensure the trucks could move around their parked equipment. Ken also is a certified horticulturist and made recommendations on plants and design very throughly, and even warned me against some of my choices for area/weather we have. It's really nice to have this service so you don't end up making the wrong choices based on assumptions or inaccurate internet information! After our yard was completed, our neighbors decided to go with Ken for their work as well. He continues (even after the work is completed) to check that everything is working well, gives us tips on ensuring the lawns and plants stay nice, and noticed one of the plants didn't make it so replaced it without my saying anything. Ken Wexner did a great job on our neighbor's yard, driveway, and paving work, so we asked him if he would do just a driveway for us. He sent me to view similar work that he had done nearby, which I really liked. He and my husband worked on the design and together we picked out the exact type of brickwork we desired that would match with our paved walkway. This was a complex triple wide driveway on a slope, and he and his crew did a great job. We have had many many compliments! We hired Landscape Dynamics (owned and operated by Ken Wexner), to convert our front and back yards from sod lawn to drought resistant plants. Ken was very professional, courteous, and provided expertise in recommending what would work best for our situation. He made the initial design and planning stage very interactive. He gave my wife and I several options for plants, trees, and other materials and spent quite a bit of time with us explaining the pros and cons of each as well as optimal placement. We liked that Ken listened to our opinions and feedback, which he then incorporated into the final plan. Ken was always on time every day and provided direct oversight of his crew. He always communicated status at the beginning and end of each day and what items were left to do. The scope of our project included the following: demolition and hauling of existing turf, plants and dirt, building new drainage system, planting new drought-resistant flowers, shrubs, and trees, replacing sprinklers with drip, installing mulch and crushed granite, concrete work, and installing a new 16-zone smart WiFi irrigation controller (RainMachine HD-16). His careful planning of my project allowed us to get 2 large rebates from both EBMUD and the State of California (this was quite challenging as they both have very stringent criteria). Several years ago we decided we no longer wanted a lawn. Ken designed and installed a dry creek bed landscape with drought resistant plants and trees. He installed wiring for a future fountain that we had him install last year. He re-did our entire backyard, replacing the lawn with raised vegetable beds and our old dilapidated charcoal brick bbq, with a gas grill. He took care of all the city permits, since we needed both natural gas line and electrical line to it. Not having to deal with the City was wonderful. He is very professional and experienced. We hired Landscape Dynamics, led by Ken Wexner, in August of 2016, for a sizeable job completely re-landscaping our front yard, replacing the driveway and adding a new set of concrete steps leading to our front door. We are delighted in all respects: with the results, with the way the work was done and the way the agreement and finances turned out. We heartily recommend Landscape Dynamics. We bought our house 22 years ago, and have been upgrading it steadily over that time. We demand and know quality, and hold our contractors to a high standard How we Found Landscape Dynamics We often walk the neighborhood and see too many jobs that are poorly executed. The concrete work is sloppy. The design is poor. Materials are obviously Home-Depot derived. Within a year or two, the work goes quickly downhill. But a few jobs looked markedly different, and one had a sign with Landscape Dynamics' contact information. We called Ken. He came over one evening, but we didn't have a clear vision of what we wanted. He told us that we weren't ready for him, and that we needed to snap pictures of what we saw out there that we liked, and that he didn't want to start spending our money drawing up designs when he wasn't sure he understood what we wanted. I respect that. It took us a few months, but we did what he suggested, and he returned for a second visit (still no cost). We retained him to draw up a design (refundable if we hired him to do the work). With a few tweaks, the design was excellent, and we negotiated and signed an agreement. It was fairly detailed, but called out some possible upcharges. Executing the Work We had to wait about six weeks for him to begin--a shorter wait than we had expected, as he tends to be pretty booked up. He began the job on time, and finished on time, about four weeks later. His team was working our job every day. The team of three (Ernesto, Manuel and Martine) were gentlemen--friendly and hardworking, and fully bilingual (Spanish and English). They were happy to explain what they were doing and why, and cleaned up every day. As the work unfolded, we saw them do many things that weren't called out for in the contract, but that they do as part of a quality job. For example, they went to great lengths to remove pervasive roots from a big tree we had recently removed. Of course, Ken was there nearly every day. He's hands on, making decisions, driving the big equipment, checking the work. His hands are usually dirty. Neighbor Talk We live in a cul-de-sac with a majority of the neighbors being recently retired. In other words, they watched the work more than I could (I am still working). They were impressed with the diligence, the steady progress, the hard work, and ultimately, with the gorgeous design. Every neighbor has told us that they love looking out at our front yard. (Of course, it took us 20 years to do this, and old front yard wasn't anything special--I have to wonder what they'd been saying about us in the past...). One neighbor wanted the porta-potty moved - and Landscape Dynamics did so. Another neighbor pointed out a "mess" near where their truck had been parked. It was a tree mess---not from Landscape Dynamics--but they swept it up anyway. Another neighbor said, "You know these guys are serious because they own their own heavy equipment." Ken had a Bobcat loader on site for a few weeks, along with a Kubota tractor. That, plus thousands of dollars of other equipment on the side of my house. He's made a big investment in his business. Landscape as Art Having been in the art business for over 20 years, I understand aesthetics. Ken is a landscape artist. He creates mini-parks, and truly cares about, and insists on great design. He worries about balance and perspective. He sees and understands texture and color. While he accepted input from us and created the vision we asked for, he would stop us if we asked for something that ultimately wouldn't look good, or wouldn't last. There were some details in the stairs he built, and the rock placements that surprised us--yet they looked awesome, and fulfilled our vision. Money His contract spells out clearly a payment plan, where we pay as the work is completed. I paid without waiting for him to ask as work was completed, wanting to telegraph my sense of fair play. There were some upcharges, some anticipated (out of control tree roots) and others not anticipated (leaking water main). But there were also cost reductions (couldn't do a rock wall in one section due to buried utility boxes discovered after work begun). He was fair, and we calculated the adjustments at the end of the job. Ken is one of the good guys. He does great work, and is passionate about his profession. Ken did a fabulous job on our xeriscape! He and his team removed our lawns, changed sprinklers to a drip system, established electricity lines and put in lights, plumbed for a water feature, laid a flagstone path, put in plants, laid a small patch of sod, repaired the fence, and fixed two frustrating gates that used to stick. Ken helped me choose drought-tolerant plants, and he made several calls to EBMUD to clarify their requirements to get the saving-water rebate. Ken answered my request for an estimate immediately, was on time for every appointment and a pleasure to work with.
