We needed to replace our raised wooden deck and were looking for a replacement and adjacent landscaping that would address critical drainage issues. We met with Lund landscaper Taylor Hawkins to discuss options. He came back with a really great preliminary design that matched all our wants and needs. We suggested a small change and he finalized a really great design. Since we already had a stone terrace and wanted to optimize the budget, we chose to match our existing look and Taylor's design addressed all our needs: Most important to us, improved drainage and gravel instead of grass; a continuous paved patio where the raised deck once stood, giving us a more useable, flat surface all the way to the terrace steps, and finally, plantings that enhanced our existing landscape, an upgrade to the sprinkler system and bonuses like a seat wall to expand the use of the patio for guests. Lund even took existing pavers that were removed from the old build and used them to create a circular patio in an area that had been useless before. Lund's talented team were on time, every day, all day. We had one or two weather delays, but if it wasn't pouring, they were there working. If one part couldn't be done due to rain, they moved to something else they could do under shelter. It was like that with every part of the project. Taylor provided guidance, Raphael was an amazing craftsman who installed the pavers with the most amazingly accurate drainage (including additional drainage and water for our potted patio roses), new circular patio and retaining wall. Likewise, Martine built the most beautiful steps for us and finished up the seat wall, Manuel handled the dig out, drainage and gravel work, Angel ordered the plant material and marshalled the guys who planted everything (they were fantastic), and he and Rodrigo also handled the sprinkler system to all the existing plantings and left extra nodes available for future plants. If anyone was left out, please forgive, because the entire workforce were all professional, understanding, and always ready to assist and make a change if necessary. You can't do a project where you dig up your yard and not find the unexpected. Lund was very responsive and immediately addressed any issue, found a resolution, and it was done, usually within a day or two at most. We received everything we paid for, and more. We are currently enjoying the fruits of their labor! We would definitely use Lund Landscaping again and, in fact, we have already received a future quote for some changes we are contemplating on our fountain. Dana Lund did a complete renovation of our backyard in 2023/2024. We're extremely happy with the finished project. We especially liked the fact that they did both the design work and the installation work. The design was a collaborative effort...we had a few ideas ahead of time but it was a group effort to come up with the final design. They then tore out the pre-existing backyard down to the dirt. The new backyard now includes 2 pergolas, 1 pavilion, a fire pit, grass area, pavers, flagstone, barbeque/bar seating area with quartzite, custom redwood planter boxes for vegetables/herbs, outdoor lighting, and lots of plants and flowers throughout. There are now excellent drainage and sprinklers/drip systems in place. They also did a great job of maximizing the space as our backyard is relatively small. We used Dana Lund Landscaping for the Landscape portion of our new pool and outdoor kitchen. They also did the hardscape portion of the pool project that was under Hawkins Pools. We are really happy with the work Dana Lund did. Frans spent time with us to understand our preferences then put together an initial plan and followed that up by talking with us about various plant options, pros and cons of each then took us to the nursery to actually look at the different types of plants and make the final selections. Rodrigo and his crew did a great job on the porcelain tile decking. He was on site often and was always available by phone if we had any questions or any issues came up. He was very knowledgeable and had good suggestions when there were a couple ways things could be done. We had both the front and back yard completely changed with a focus on reducing our lawn area and increasing our planting areas. The design process was very collaborative and creative. The scope included both soft scaping for plants and hard scaping for walkways and patio area. Frans was our principle contact and he has a fantastic knowledge of plants and helped select the right plants to place according to our liking and appropriate to the sun, soil, and environmental conditions. I called Dana Lund Landscaping for a front yard landscape redo. Ryan called me back and we set an appointment 1.5 weeks later(late June) for him to visit our house in Danville to look at the project. After spending 45 minutes with him, he agreed to quote the project. 2 weeks later, I followed up as I hadn't heard from him, and he said he'd have a quote by the following week. we're now a month since that email comm, no contact, no quote, nothing. I'm not changing the rating as I have no basis for doing so. They did a great job for us in 2008. However I recently learned that the the same person who replaced Hawkins, original owner of Hawkins Pool Services, has also taken over Dana Lund Landscaping and Dana is no longer involved. I bring this up as we had a poor experience with this new iteration of Hawkins Pools (see my review of them). I was looking to have some concrete work and contacted Dana Lund, but declined to move forward when I learned of the common ownership. My experience with Dana Lund was disappointing at best. We had originally called them because of such great experiences my sister-in-law and neighbor had with them. We had someone come out to talk to us. We went around the yard explaining where we needed help and what we were looking to do. After going through all of that, she said she wasn't the plant/landscaper designer and would have someone contact us about a plan. That was months ago. While most of Dana Lund design and installation services are terrific, their irrigation plans tend to be overly simplified and one-size-fits-all. While Frans is wonderful to work with on planting design, Angel is unreceptive to the owner's wishes regarding installation of specific valves for irrigation of patio pots or trees, and to accommodate future plantings. In my case, drip installation for new trees was inadequate, given dryer winters, hotter summers, and the season in which plants were installed. I lost a major tree because of this. It makes no sense to have patio pots, trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses all on the same valve for 10 minutes per day, no matter how many drippers are put on a 24-48" tree or how few on pots. Nor does it make any sense to max-out a valve's capacity at installation so that later plantings require a system re-design. Irrigation plans should be better coordinated with the planting designs, and should reflect the owner's input regarding future needs. Not all homeowners are gardeners, and not all gardeners and gardens are the same. read more

About 1 year ago, we contracted Dana Lund to replace the sod and landscape bordering our driveway. We also had them install stone paver's and mow strip (we supplied the stone) set in concrete base. Due to a gopher and vole problem, we also specified installation of "gopher wire" under the lawn which the rodents cannot chew through to create burrows. In addition, we added some new plants to accent the fence border. We worked with Sal the estimator and Frans who helped us with the design and plant selection. The project did take a long time to get underway and then Covid hit, so it took months before we were able to start. Once the supervisor and crews began; however, the job went quickly and seamlessly. The nice thing about this company is the specialization of the people who work there - estimators, arborists, crew supervisors, schedulers, paving, etc. so you know you have knowledgeable people on your team. We had our backyard landscaped by Dana Lund Landscaping back in 2017 when the company was still owned by Dana, and we were thrilled with the result, so naturally when it came time to redo our front yard, we contacted the company again. (We did not realize it had changed ownership and is now owned by Hawkins Pools). The bottom line is, we ended up with a wonderful remodel ONLY thanks to Frans and his original Dana Lund team, who were fantastic. Unfortunately we had a very poor experience with the frontline salesperson, who was not responsive to our initial call, often did not show up when planned, and did not listen to our ideas or what our vision was for the front yard. We would have appreciated contact from the owner at this point, given the issues we were facing, but did not hear from him at all, which was disappointing. Because we had a great history with Frans (who does wonderful design has a great knowledge of plants), we did not cancel our contract and look elsewhere, but worked solely with him to secure the design and install. I can't speak highly enough of Frans - he is the workhorse of the company, and goes above and beyond for his clients. After we got past the disappointing initial contact with the new management, we ended up with a wonderful result that we are very proud of. read more

Dana Lund Landscaping (DLL) just completed a major project in our backyard. We have a high end home located in Norris Canyon Estates and we needed a backyard that befit the property. We used DLL on our last home and wanted to go with them again because we had such a great experience with them the first time. I can't give them enough stars. This time our project was extensive and it took some time. We also engaged a pool contractor and DLL worked with them and around them as required. Their people are fantastic, very professional. They showed up every day over 2 and a half months putting in retaining walls, pergolas (3 ea), pavers, built-in barbecue, concrete to include a staircase and of course landscaping. Our HOA can be a bit of a pain in the butt and DLL dealt with them as well. With a project this size things are bound to go wrong. This is where Dana shines. When issues inevitably come up he and his team will respond to resolve them to your satisfaction expeditiously. Moreover, they will resolve issues that you didn't even know you had without peppering you with a thousand questions. They can do this because they've been doing it for such a long time. Experience goes a long way and these guys have it. Dealing with contractors of any type isn't always fun but dealing with DLL is a pleasure. If you want your yard done right then Dana Lund Landscaping should be your first choice. read more

What a disappointment from a company that had come highly recommended by several Danville friends and a local high profile realtor. The recent backyard re-do was the 2nd time we have worked with Dana Lund Landscape over the course of 15 yrs. They are on time, on budget and delivered a very high quality service with custom touches and style that are beloved by our family. The first job included a beautifully designed fire pit, bbq area and arbor. The fire pit is the perfect design for the area with the correct dimensions for optimum heat. The most recent job included a bocce ball court and a total re-do of drainage for our lawn and new landscape. They were very patient in the design choices and options presented and executed the work with a high degree of craftsmanship and care. Again, on time and on budget. They tell you what they are going to do and then do what they say they are going to do - a rarity in this world. They are not the least expensive but by no means are they the most expensive. Dana just finished our yard and we are blown away. It's beautiful! A few years ago we hired a contractor to do our back yard and he cut every corner in the book. It was awful. He didn't really know what he was doing and didn't care. After our sprinklers gave out and our lawn was completely dead, we knew we wanted to redo it, but wasn't sure who to call. Dana had just completed our friend's yard and did a terrific job. We called him immediately and I have to say, from start to finish it was thoroughly done and well thought out. We wanted to incorporate a fire place and arbor without obstructing the main view of the yard when you walk in the door and they came up with a great plan right out of the gate. His team was very professional and really took the time to do it right. We chose flagstone for the patio and it's beautiful. I was very specific with how I wanted everything to look and Dana was so collaborative to work with on incorporating my ideas into the yard. I've seen other yards that he's completed and they're beautifully done. We had an issue with sap dropping from our recently cut trees onto the stone. Even though Dana's team had finished, they came out and tried different methods of getting the sap out (and the tree guy - a separate contractor that we hired didn't offer to help get it out). It was so nice of Dana's team to do, especially since they had finished our yard. We're looking forward to having them design a new front yard for us. read more

We got our entire backyard and front redone. Dana Lund did the hardscape and landscape in the front, and the landscape in the back. The expertise and professionalism showed right from the first meeting. He came up with a good design and worked with us on the modifications/iterations in a methodical fashion, His crew was just amazing considering the time of the year this project started. They did not cut corners, fixed any minor issues immediately and for most part they were on schedule. The quality of work is great! He knows his plants. His attention to drainage is probably mentioned in every review. In terms of pricing you get what you pay for. Even though he seemed expensive the pricing was very competitive. We used Dana Lund for pavers around a new pool and other hardscapes on the sides of a new construction house. They also did all the irrigation, lighting and plants. We were very happy how they implemented the plans we had. They also did an excellent job helping us pick out the right plants for the right areas in our yard. The few concerns we had while they were working were addressed promptly and to our satisfacation. The owner came out a couple of times himself just to make sure we were happy with how things were going. After they were done with the job and we paid them, they stood by their work and came back out to address a couple of minor issues and to replace some plants that died. Dana Lund Landscaping is amazing. We had Hawkins Pool remodel our pool and they recommended Dana for the rest of the backyard in Moraga. They pretty much completely revamped our yard. The outcome is stunning they are top notch and not the cheapest company but we were looking for a quality outcome. The people who work for this company take pride in what they do and the majority have worked for them for years. Dana the owner personally made sure we were happy, Franz is their plant expert who chose gorgeous drought resistant flowering shrubs, trees etc, Sal gives the initial estimates and follows through with some of the coordinating, Marco oversees the project. The customer service is through the roof! I was amazed at the workmanship as we had two large areas of pavers installed and also a very large retaining wall replaced. They terraced our back hill and landscaped entire .25 acre yard, put drainage in, and also lit the backyard. Also installed a large rock fire pit and sitting area. The hill was cut into to enlarge our yard. As a realtor who sees a lot of homes I would say they are in the top 1% of quality. Don't be discouraged if you have to call them a few times they are super busy as all of the landscape companies are right now. Dana Lund and crew just completed the remodel of our front landscape and we couldn't be happier. It was a complete gut job. Every single shrub and blade of grass was removed and replaced with native CA plants on a drip system. We added a stacked stone wall and landscape lighting. It is beautiful. The work is professionally done by professionals who have worked for Dana for decades (not a typo). No sub contractors. The crew showed up everyday at 6:50am and were working by 7:00am. They cleaned up each day and the property was spotless when the job was completed. Dana stopped by multiple times to ensure we liked how things were going. When I asked to change out some of the landscaping lighting, it was done. No questions asked. After a sitting area was constructed and we changed our minds, it was removed without question and the sprinkler lines dug up and moved as a result. No corners were cut. We have lived in the same neighborhood for 20 years and watched as Dana Lund Landscaping performed the work as well as watched the landscape develop over all this time in 3 different neighbors yards. Not one of my neighbors had any complaints about the quality of his work, design, or professionalism of him or all his workers. My neighbors landscape, both hard scape and soft scape, has not weathered after 20 years and still looks absolutely beautiful. We hired Dana to 1) freshen up our backyard and create a hottub landscape design that did not include a deck. Dana and his team listened to our wishes and looked at our pictures from Houzz.com to describe ideas that we liked and came up with a beautiful, tranquile, inviting landscape design that flowed with our current design. After getting numerous quotes to build a retaining wall and new stone mailbox we decided to go with Dana Lund. They were one of the lower bids we got and I was told to be careful because sometimes there can be "hidden" costs. We have been extremely impressed with them! The masons were true artists. Everyone who has been to our house has been extremely skilled and polite. It turned out our deck wasn't very well supported and they reinforced it with rebar and concrete. They fixed an outside light that has not worked since we moved in. There were numerous unexpected things they did without a single increase in price. They went above and beyond.
