We weren't sure where to eat on our recent trip downtown. After friends deciding against Pho we walked a bit more and saw this place. Well at first we weren't sure if it was a restaurant the signage on the awning was not maintained with the wind that had blown. The windows had some weird decorations being January. Still having a weird Santa thing on wall and Christmasy lights/greenery. A large pig type statue sat on the floor to the right as we enter really had no place. The dining room while on one side it had nice bench seating the other side had no back to the benches. The lighting was this lazily hung wiring with bulbs no fixtures rather disappointed about the decor. I usually tuck tail and run when I see this kind of heartless dining room. I began to get some hope after our waiter approaches, he was one of the few highlights, he was engaged and very helpful. There were only 4-5 diners as we were there.
Lets start now with the food we ordered the cheese dip and opted to add black beans to it for the $1 more. What came out was some black been water and not sure where the cheese was in the dip? It was absolutely flavorless and ghastly. I later asked what cheese it was made of he let me know it was a mixture of american and cheddar, I know my cheese this was NO WHERE near any type of cheese. It had almost separated.
I see that they have a spicy jalapeno limeade, that sounded amazing and asked for one while we waited for our mains. The thing was absolutely delicious and perfect. This drink got 1 star added by itself.
I ordered the al pastor rice bowl. I know my al pastor this was merely chunks of pork and chunks of canned pineapple. Inside the rice bowl was pickled carrots which actually worked with the dish. But I also found green beans, peas and pretentious herb that offered no contrast. Al Pastor should come from a spit with layers of meat and pineapple alternating or at least pineapple roasted down the meat. This was merely a pork and pineapple rice bowl change the name asap.
My other guests tried chicken dishes one a taco salad which was attempting to stick with the asian/latin fusion and was made with a huge wonton wrapper instead of the traditional tortilla shell. Both dishes were served with bland, dry chicken. And just really underwhelming on the actual flavor.
On our way out I watched as what I guess was an employee come in to get something to eat and overheard the new waiter tell him oh don't worry about paying for it. I watched and quickly the employee was served his food while a guest stood outside waiting for a taco, a wrap and a drink for over 13 minutes. I commented to my party that if that continues the place will be in big trouble.
After asking the waiter if the owners are also the chefs. He let us know that he runs the place and has the go of what he wants to do as they aren't worried about this place. One is an architect the other moved to New York and the other one as he described it is just lazy. After questioning him why he isn't using traditional queso fresco or maybe even a paneer if they want to do the fusion thing he said he has plans of changing it, but hasn't got to it.
My final verdict: TL:DR
If you can't be bothered to make a nice cheese dip, can't marinade or brine your chicken and can't season your food. Things are going to be real bad. Allow your staff to take things from restaurant, things are going to get REAL REAL BAD. Allow your staff to make poor decisions lock the doors save your money.
I can mark another place off my do not visit list in Cincy. read more
